I guarantee you won't get arrested for lining up your goodwill with their own. When you're pulling homeless away from established help centers and shelters into parks where upkeep on a good day isn't cheap - you're just making it hard on every other taxpayer in the area. Money is basically wasted in every direction. You want to help someone, donate to a shelter.

I barely ever carry cash on me in the first place, but yeah, it's unbelievable how bad it's gotten here. We actually have signs put up on major highways near streetlights talking about how you don't have to give money to people holding up signs on the streets and cops are just about constantly frequenting an area downtown where they're always around. I just don't know how they'd actually fix it, because the panhandlers will generally just scatter and regroup in different parts of the highway if cops ever do come around.

One of the guys on my football team in college panhandled on weekends. That kid was never hungry.

What made me stop giving out money directly was this guy who was begging my friend and I for a dollar outside of this McD drive-thru. We said no at first, then felt bad so we ordered him a burger and pulled back around to hook him up. "Fuck I'm gonna do with a burger nigga? I can't drink this shit" and threw it at us. I was content to drive off but my friend got out the car, picked up the burger, and slapped the old bastard in the face with a patty. I nodded in approval, then drove off.

That quote isn't even wrong. The wording is crap and it could be a lot less inflammatory but by pulling people away from government programs for the homeless, which all tie together to make sure that they get some medical treatment (could be a lot better but that's a different topic), get fed, have any immediate issues handled appropriately, and get on the road to landing a job by having daily open buffets in a park X miles away that was never intended for such a use is simply not good.

You want to feed people - get on the same page with the people that are already doing it.

There's a story right now in South Florida with this 90 year old man who has been going out every day to the Fort Lauderdale beaches to feed the homeless. The city has been giving him fines/threatening him with jail time and the media has made a circus out of it because "Oh how dare you threaten this 90 year old man who is just trying to help people". Like DY said, it's not about stopping the act of kindness, it's about being organized/safe and helping address the real issues keeping them on the street like drug addictions.

Remember that guy with the "Golden Voice" from a while back? Media jumped onto his story a few years ago and made a whole heart warming story out of it, gave him a job/free money. A few years later what happened? Dude ended up back on the street cause he didn't deal with his real problems.

This is similar to my first experience with a homeless person when I was little. I was on my first trip to DC and my Dad and I were touring the city. We ran into a homeless man next to a liquor store begging for change so he could get something to eat. I asked my dad if we could give him money, but my dad was like "He smells like alchohol, he is only going to use the money for a drink. So instead, let's go to that Burger King next door and get him something to eat." We went to the Burger King, got a burger, and brought it to the man. The man took the burger and threw it on the ground. My dad told him off and was like "See, he never wanted food". I've never attempted to give a homeless person money because of that.

The sad thing is that DY & Kreed's stories aren't even the first time I've heard of that type of thing happening when people try to help out random homeless. My cousin even had his change thrown on the ground because the guy "saw the bills" he put back in his pocket. I know everyone isn't like this, and little random acts of kindness aren't a bad thing but in general I discourage people from donating on the street. Just a mixed bag in general and I would always rather donate my time or money to a soup kitchen or local halfway house. There are a lot of really great programs especially this time of year that help out whole families with meals and Christmas.

I gave a dozen donuts to a homeless dude once because I had them in my car, and I got the "I don't want your fuckin donuts" so fuck that guy.

regarding the homeless. I've been a victim of a person taking advantage of my kindness. Two incidents in the past 5 years.

1. First moved to Greensboro NC Wendy's on Dave Lyle Blvd gave a dude 5 dollars heading into Wendy's on lunch. come out from lunch see said guy across the street at motel 6 buying a drug of some sort. Witnessed the exchange and all.

2. 2nd in Raleigh NC - i540 creedmoor rd exit headed to Jiffy lube to get a oil change around 8am. Witness lady park her truck off the exit and position it like it was left over night. She get's out of said truck with a piece of cardboard and a sharpie. Writes her sign and walks across the street with said sign and a lawn chair to prep for a long hard day of panhandling.

Haven't given anything since.


Side note - Being from South Carolina I have many a crackhead cousin who do this and mooch off my grandmother on a daily basis. It's unfortunate these people make it hard for truly homeless people looking for a 2nd chance.

I only give food, never money..and I'm not as giving as I was before. Have had the cursing, food thrown back, told they wanted bills. I've also had folks thanks me plenty..even one cat tried to give me back $2 for a sammy I bought him weeks prior. It's a crapshoot..

had a similar experience. in high school i would always pack large lunches because friends would often go without. i would often see a homeless dude under the freeway underpass in the mornings asking for money for food. i saw him for about two weeks asking for money, and felt bad and figured id make him a sandwich the next day. the next day comes and i give him a sandwich, and it isnt some whack bologna sandwich either. i hand him the bag, and the fucker looks me right in the eye, stares me down, and throws it in the trash. i was so pissed, but i told the fucker he might want to keep the sandwich. that shit makes you bitter as hell.

It makes me sad seeing other black people feel like they have to be a certain way or else white people will hate us. I mean, where do they get this stuff? If a white person wants to hate you, they will no matter what you or how you behave.

And more importantly, black people aren't a hivemind. Even our own people who believe such are ridiculous.

I mean, it's really silly when you think about it. Black culture is American culture. We eat the same foods, share clothing stores, share music now too, etc.

If someone wants to be into gaming, they are just as likely to get the same responses in school from other kids (aka nerds, etc). I really don't understand this view. We lost most of our culture when we were brought here on slave ships. So, what's all this about black culture being so different?

the different label comes from the white culture a large, imo. We're just who we are. To them we're the other type of human that exists in addition to themselves.


Black culture IS American culture, because without us, they would still be sleeping in the woods, hiding from wolf howls, eating each others' corpses, and shooting at anything that looks different from them.
