The Bureau: XCOM Declassified is not a standard TPS. You should be excited

Why? You've no doubt played "real" X-COM already, it's been out for quite some time. Why not be excited for another game in the same universe with similar mechanics? I played an absurd amount of Enemy Unknown and loved every second of it, but I'm far more interested in a tactical third person shooter the likes of which we haven't seen since GRAW.

I want more real XCOM not this, hat is all. Enemy Within for me please!

Also I have not been impressed by what they have show of this game. Scenario alone will not get me to buy it.

I wasn't that interested in this game before, but looking at this thread, Declassified is shaping up to be something of true quality.

game looks awesome! I'll probably get it. But I thought xcom was supposed to be made by a council and all countries/continents were a part of it, not just america..

this is a prequel to XCOM proper and it will show how the XCOM world council became founded.

It taking place in the 60s it will also touch on the civil liberties issues that were being worked out that time as well. Basically, think of this as a fusion of Mad Men and X-Files played out as a tactical third person shooter.

If you have a spare 5 minutes take a look at the "behind the scenes" video on 2k's youtube channel:

Waiting on the reviews. It does look interesting though. I like how the action doesn't stop when you are giving orders, it just goes into bullet time. It should help to keep the game feeling tense.

If it's decent this game is going to benefit so much from the praise the Firaxis version got. "Hey, a shooter version of that awesome strategy game -- why not?" Things have pretty much done a 180 since the announcement and it's mostly thanks to that. Works for me!

It does look pretty good. It's like they took a lot of ideas of Mass Effect but actually balanced the game around those mechanics.

I'm not getting it day one because I'm broke from Summer Sale and some additional games, but it's on my wishlist. August is pretty damn sick.

You can get it for ~$30 here, btw: http://www.nuuvem.com.br/produto/1294-the-bureau-xcom-declassified

EDIT: You also get a DLC, Spec Ops: The Line, and if they get enough preorders you'll also get X-COM collection, including Enemy Unkwnon. Pretty good deal.

Well I thought this was just an FPS set in the 50s, I definitely learnt something today from reading the OP.

I'm giving this a try Day 1. I hope it does enough for me to keep it from then on.

I'll probably pick it up on the Steam winter sale for like $15. I didn't pick up Enemy Unknown until Greenmangaming had it for around that price.

I've been looking forward to it, but I have heard so little over the last few months that it made me wonder if they had no faith and were sending it to die. (I know the dev cycle was a nightmare on it, but still, I expected at least a bit of a push.)

So I guess I have to wait and see what the reviews will be like before making my decision. Any idea when they might be going up?

That's a great deal. I'll probably buy it from these guys.

I still really dont like the map designs as its just random chest high objects scattered everywhere, which basically scream GO HERE.

Do wish that developers / designers would move past that sorta bullcrap and figure out ways to get things that look like they actually belong / make sense in the world they are crafting.

From what I've seen of the game it doesn't look like that at all, and it's only an issue if you perceive it as one. The real world has a lot of chest high objects. Not only this, but did you not play Enemy Unknown? You think that it's completely fine for that game to lay out a symmetrical grid for every level but a covered based tactical third person shooter isn't allowed to provide cover for the player?

It sure as hell looks like it from every single bit of gameplay footage Ive seen. Esp the ones that are long play through sessions.

Enemy Unknown is the exact same thing, but thats not the game we are discussing here obviously.

I dont know why people are so upset about this "being X-Com". I mean if it was the only game we get we all should have been upset but we got a good strategy one anyway. This one is like an extra. Whats so bad about it?

I'm actually more interested in this game than Enemy Unknown. I played Enemy Unknown for like 3-4 hours, but it was taking too long for the game to get difficult so I eventually lost interest. The active role in combat plus the the level of control from Enemy Unknown sounds like a winning combination to me.

So you played on impossible difficulty with iron man mode on?

I was just wondering if there was going to be an OT for this game.

I'm looking forward to it. Wish it didn't come out on the same day as Saints Row IV, but I'll have to just make time for both.

Deserves a bump to let GAF know this game releases on the 20th!!. I'll be picking it up.

Unfortunate timing I suppose with Gamescom though. It';s going to sink under the weight of PS4 / XBOX release threads and general news.

Not sure how I feel about it. Working on the review. But I don't think it would have been great being JUST an FPS.

These are a couple of the newest previews and developer diaries for those interested to learn a bit more about the game:

Also, for Enemy Unknown Fans, there will be an announcement on the 21st at Gamescom. It has been called Xcom Within, not sure yet if an Expansion or just another DLC alla Sling Shot.

*I was a bit skeptical about Bureau departing from the Xcom Formula; however lately I have seen enough to grant me a copy next week.

Eh, I'm guessing 77-85 on metacritic for this one. The controversy surrounding the initial reveal will probably keep anyone from handing it a 9+ review, even if it deserves it, sadly enough.

Personally I'm really excited for it after watching some of the gameplay videos. It seems like Mass Effect 2/3's gameplay on steroids and not anchored down by that hamfisted, poorly written shlock that Bioware called a story, and after the great BioShock 2 (that was, especially when talking about mechanics, much better than the first...and infinite for that matter ;P) these guys have my money easily.

Game looks good. I can't believe it. It's like 2 years of re-dos and actually watching the fanbase and crafting things makes a difference!

May actually buy, when I used to shit on this thing daily, from large height.

I would've purchased this game day one if they had kept the original artstyle. Now I'm just going to wait for a sale. If the developers and 2K management didn't believe in the original design and buckled to internet hysteria (People were always getting the "real" XCOM, both were announced at the same time) so I have no reason to believe in the game.

The artstyle was a big reason I took interest in this XCOM in the first place. It also seemed more like a detective game, which I appreciated.

So should I be preordering this?

I can get it for like 34 bucks on GMG, which is good for Australia.

If I'm being brutally honest that GB quicklook is not selling the gameplay to me, at all.

I'm in two hearts about it as well. It's such a risky game, with it being in development for so long. I can get it for £20 on GMG, and its tempting. I just hope reviews don't force prices up.
