The Burnout Revenge/Legends thread

Lovin' Burnout Revenge so far. The sense of speed awes once again, and the gritty and whole industrialized look of the game puts it above Burnout 3's visuals.

But why did Criterion have to mess with the Crash challenges? Setting up your start-off speed and taking into account wind speed and direction? Why make things more complicated?

And why mess with the camera system? The camera focuses more on your car wreck (even though you can pan it around) than the bigger picture of chaos and disaster of traffic (which Burnout 3 easily did since the traffic camera cuts were panoramic and moved much faster without waiting for the score tally all the time).

Other than those peeves, Burnout Revenge is awesome to the max. Max me love. ^_^

Is anyone else having trouble switching between Revenge and Legends? I end up totally disregarding traffic in Legends because of the traffic checking in Revenge. :(

I prefer the crash mode in this one. The wind is the only thing I don't care for, but the initial speed burst is a great idea. Lack of mulitpliers is cool and the target cars is as well. I also find that the crashes are layed-out better so it's slighty more chanlleging to figure out how to do them well.

otherwise all my gripes with this game relate to crash mode. whatever dev said that this crash mode was the type they were aiming to do with part 2 is out of thier goddamn mind. YOU GOT IT RIGHT IN 2, STOP FUCKING WITH IT.

and to answer my own questions...

no custom soundtrack in crash mode

no initials for high scores in crash mode (well, with no single race option this is a gimme)

NO SAVING SOUND SETTINGS, FUCK YOU EA TRAX! DIE!

Damn it, the lack of initials and high scores was my biggest complaint about the Crash Mode in 3! I'm sorry to hear that it's the same this time around. This pisses me off to no end. There was nothing more fun than playing four-player crash mode in Burnout 2 and trying to break each others high record. I guess my friends and I will have to keep on playing Burnout 2 for Crash Mode until they get it right.

Eh, the camera in Crash mode this year is considerably worse than BO2 or 3.
Really? I'm actually quite fond of the ability to rotate the camera this year. I don't recall being able to do that in the previous games (which pissed me off, as it often chose bad angles). Now I can at least rotate it to face in the direction I want.

Exactly. I've never liked crash mode the best, but the set ups seem so much more interesing this time with the jumps and such. I don't know, I'm incredibly happy with the game because the tracks are so much better. I played it for 5-6 hours straight last night.

Oh short note...I didn't play for long on LIVE but some of my other friends did mostly that. It's great. It was nothing like last year...smooth, better set ups and ranking system, etc. Really cool.

Hard to find good (accurate) comparison shots, but you can really see the difference in blur between the two versions (can't judge image quality here, as shots were captured differently). Also notice the light on the road in front of the cars. This actually applies to all surfaces. On PS2, lights "blooms" from the sunlight on all different surfaces. On XBOX, it doesn't stand out in the same way.

I was going to buy Revenge today, but the reloading of track if you fail bothers me a little... Has anyone tested if the game works from Hdloader, and if it does, how much of an improvement it gives?

I wonder...

The retry issue is the ONLY major problem I have.

What was it like in BO3? I can't even remember at this point, but I know I wasn't bothered by it...

I believe in BO3 you had to load to retry too... but I'm at work... and my BO3 is at home... :(

BTW, I don't have the ps2 online kit but i have a pstwo.. how can i get online?

Your PStwo should have come with a disc that installs the online software onto a memory card. Check your box for the manual. Find the manual, you should find the disc.

BO3 required reload for retry

Thing is it was only a second or two. This is like 10 seconds full load.

PS. I REALLY hope that the single race is in here somewhere. If anybody is at the 11th level, can they confirm whether it is unlocked....

Hey, would you mind timing the XBOX loadtimes for me? I didn't really pay attention to this when I was testing them both out, unfortunately. According to my watch, the PS2 version takes 10 seconds to load a race. How does the XBOX version compare?

Xbox loading is around 3-5 seconds on average dark.

Also using HDLoader with the PS2 version cuts loading to something nearly on par with the Xbox game.

3-5 seconds? That is a lot faster...

It works with HD Loader, though? Wish I had a copy of it now. I have an HDD ready to go, but not the actual software... :\

Yea, comparing the two directly the Xbox gets you into the action a good deal faster.

Also the blur, lighting, and sparks are definately more prevalent on PS2. Regardless, I'm loving the game on the 'Box. XBL support is amazingly fluid this year, and Team Road Rage is bloody brilliant!

Mode 3, right? Every EA game I know of works in Mode 3. I plan on getting it tonight.

GAF is the biggest bunch of nit-pickers ever. Since when is a little extra load time the deciding factor in whether one should buy a game or not? Is it that crucial that it would truly ruin the rest of the game for you? If so, I really feel sorry for you.

Well, while it's not necessarily a deal breaker for me in and of itself, I can see how excessive load times can be irritating. I know that I've given up on games before that I've somewhat liked, but the overly long loads put me over the edge on them.

Not to mention that it does seem odd that just restarting a race takes the same amount of time to load as starting the race from the menu.

Well, the excessive times of Tiger Woods PSP did make me hate that game, lol. But in Butnout, there are no long load times.

I played the HELL out of Revenge today online. I played for like 5 hours. Race is sooooo fun. Man, I haven't had this much fun since....BO3!!!!

Do you have any way of running homebrew software? Getting the latest version of HDLoader on your memory card isn't too difficult.

Picked up Revenge last night.

Pros:
- The presentation is AWESOME, much better than BO3.
- DJ Stryker is gone
- The game looks like it moves even FASTER than BO3
- Sound effects are fantastic, and control is spot-on

Cons:
- I HATE traffic checking, it takes 50% of the suspense out of the race, now you just slam thru cars on the right.
- Doesn't remeber custom soundtrack settings
- Still only 6 player online! Should be 8.
- Still loads after EVERYTHING. I especially like how it picks a different EATRAX song after each loading session, just to rub some salt in it.

I really REALLY dislike traffic checking though. Obvisouly I will give it more time, I mean the rest of the game is great. But I really did NOT care for the sight of my little sports car slamming into a U-Haul, and sending it flying off into the stratosphere. If they at least crashed more realistically, or traffic checking slowed you down or something, that would be better. I think if they really wanted to change how traffic was handled, they just should have made hitting same-way traffic SURVIVIABLE (with slowdown/damage) instead of instant death.

Sounds good! I already got the game though, but it's nice to know it'll load nice and fast from the HDD.

I'll hook you up with the HDL software, if you have a way to copy some files to your PS2 memory stick. The best way to do it is if you have a PSP with USB cable (or any USB dongle) and a copy of Action Replay Max.

Really? I like the traffice checking, you might like it more as time goes on. Once you start getting the hang of it and using it to knock out a competitor ahead of you, you might change your mind about it. I know that was the case for me.

The Xbox version looks great, controls great thanks to s-controller and sounds great thanks to my own soundtracks! The game is total bliss so far.

That is false. I just stopwatched it, and it was 9.4 seconds on aveage for races (the exact same for retries), 8.7 on aveage for crashes, and 4.5 to get back to the menu from the races.

Couple thoughts on Legends:

1) Addictive as hell. I literally played until my battery died.

2) Kinda missing a party mode crash multiplayer mode where you can use one PSP. That's how we play the pther Burnouts when friends are over.

3) It desperately needed a User Soundtrack feature. The music doesn't make me gag, but it could be much better.

Overall - the best racing game on PSP. Hell if I wasn't a Tetsuya Mitzuguchi stalker, it would be the best game.

im playing some crash level in revenge and one of the cars you have to use is called "Mobile Diner" with a Carl's Jr/Hardees ad plastered all over it

wtf, sell out total

I saw that. It isn't a Carl's Jr. ad though. If you read it, it says "Burger Joint". Kind of like they tried to get a deal and it fell through. But there are billboards all over the game that are ads. Not as obvious as the Tiger and AXE ads last year, but they are there.

Both Revenge and Legends are great. I tried legends first, and was very impressed on how well it played for a handheld game. It's the best handheld racer i've played hands down.

Then I played revenge, and it's in a completely different league. It's about twice as fast as legends at the start, and has an incredible presentation. I had a blast playing it. It's a great improvement over 3, which was already an incredible game.

Then the loading of the PS2 version could be even more than that when played from the disc.

With HDloader, it takes approx 6 seconds, but I counted, didn't use stopwatch. Visibly faster than from the disc, though.

Also, the manual for the game is probably thinnest ever!

Yep, even though I have my dissapointments from some trivial things, Legends and Revenge are both utterly fantastic. EA and Criterion hit both games completely out of the park. Everybody needs to try both these games before they pass any kind of judgement.

Revenge rocks! Racing bliss at it's finest! The game compells you to get all Perfect rankings and Gold medals in every event and stage. Fun, fun!

So far at I'm at 15% total completion rating with 30+ gold medals in my stats. :)

8 hours, 18 minutes

60 / 169 events unlocked

44 / 169 golds

Insane rank

30% complete.

Damn this game is freaking huge.

Thus far ranks 1, 2, and 3 are 100% perfect.

christ, i think i'm speeding through this game

i dont know the exact stats, but i played less the 4-5 hours and i'm aready at around 35%

ranked 8

I've played several races mutliple times for fun. Eternal City Long Race is freaking godlike. I also LOVE white mountain and have played the time trail lap like 10 times.

The games tracks might be the most perfect tracks ever created.

That being said, I also don't think I have seen a better lens flare effect then on White Mountain forward 2/3 of the way through. Fantastic.

Amazing tracks, no doubt, and incredibly addictive game overall. Best Burnout game for sure, possibly the best racer ever.

Does anyone have the names of all the tracks in the game? I'm wondering if there are any that I haven't seen yet.

This game is so much fun! Played for hours last night on LIVE. It was utterly fantastic. Smooth as silk and we had no hitches of any kind. Must buy.

Same here, played a few hours last night and hit Rank 8. Perfected the first 4 tiers with max stars no problem, almost done the same with tier 5. Just cruising.

i have the distinct feeling this game is going to kill my xbox dvd drive. i can hear the damn thing accessing quite a bit, and quite loudly.

i guess the old thompson drive is finally getting ready to die.

Hows the Xbox Live for Revenge, good as it was for BO3?

Far, far better in my experience as BO3 always had issues for me. It has more small features and no lag, no dumping out of the game, etc.

my stats

play time: 5 hours 37 mins
events unlocked: 74/169
gold medals: 54/169
rank: maniac
% complete: 38
