The Criterion Collection in 2012/13: Why haven't they released *insert title here*?

Are they on blu-ray? Also, the world needs more Ozu blus.

I just recently gave up on Criterion releasing Ozu blu-rays, and bought a region free blu-ray player. BFI has released tons of Ozu films on blu-ray, and they often contain a second Ozu film as an extra (including many unreleased by Criterion).

So these are the best films ever huh?
Generally-speaking: Criterion tries to offer definitive transfers/releases of classic films that have been deemed "important" by film critics, motion picture associations, and the Criterion staff in particular. Not everything they have in their catalog is going to be a good film. But the titles are usually there for a reason.

Don't forget they'll throw in a Michael Bay title every now and then to get that $$$

Damn straight they did. I think they've got enough presence these days to coast on non-mainstream releases, though. Just a few in-between.

Benjamin Button being a Criterion was apparently at the insistence of Paramount and Fincher. Fincher is a huuuuuuuuuuuuge fan of the Collection, and I don't doubt for a second that he'd want his more recent films on there if it wasn't for the fact that a lot of them are with Sony, one of the more notoriously prickly licensors out there.

I had a question for everyone who frequents this thread. Does anyone use my OP? I update it every month and was just wondering if anyone had ideas how it could be better or if it was missing anything?

I check it out every now and then. I didn't know you had links to Gaffers criterion profile/lists here is mine.

Absolutely pathetic part deux
I picked it up day one, it is challenging even by experimental film standards, but I love shit like this. If you like Frampton, I highly reccomend the Stan Brakhage and this Jeff Keen, the latter is getting quite expensive, but is still worth it.

I'm really curious about this, Flicker Alley is starting to release some seriously interesting BD's.

I already have that Stan Brakhage set (upgraded my DVD to the blu on the first day of the sale when it came out with the new addition being a nice bonus) and wished I jumped on that Jeff Keen set earlier.

Heaven's Gate being on the way isn't super-new news (it was explicitly listed in that "sneak peak" of Criterion's schedule for the next couple of years), but it's nice that it looks like that it will be coming out sooner rather than later. Let's hope for a Brazil-quality set that has the final word on everything related to a film that has already has so, so very much written about it.

Is there an easier way to create a "My Criterion" page than manually inputting every title, or clicking "Add to Collection" on the film's page? Something where I can click through everything in one swoop?

Does maths and stuff
I didn't realize B&N had the usual sale going on right now.

Gonna blind-buy Rushmore.

Anyone want to throw me a random recommendation or two?

If you like Wes Anderson's other films you'll probably like Rushmore. A personal favorite of mine that I see you don't have is Still Walking, but read the details of it before you buy it. I don't want to be held liable lol

sadly there is not, its really something they need to add

I don't think I'll finish adding my titles then. Way too much work to do them individually.

I did it at one point by just going through and added all the titles I knew I had, but since then I've yet to go back and add all my newer stuff. It's too much work trying to figure out what is already in there.

I keep all of my titles cataloged with DVDProfiler. As soon as I buy something, it gets input into that.

Unfortunately, that has no way (on the web side) to section off only the Criterions.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'
I just got Hulu plus...what are the best Ozu films to watch for someone who hasn't seen any yet (except Tokyo Story)?

I guess I'll post my collection, too. There are many more I would like to buy, but I have been kind of holding off for blu-ray releases.

Late Spring is a good one.

I second Late Spring. My first Ozu was Tokyo Story, and while I love it now, I don't think it was a good starting point. The music in Late Spring is so relaxing that I sometimes just leave my blu-ray on the title screen. Late Autumn is another good starting point. Some very good humor in that film.

I think I just hit the big time. I'm north of Austin, TX today, and I stopped by a Barnes & Noble with some great stuff inside.

-John Cassavetes DVD set
-Solaris BD
-Rossellini historical DVD set

In addition to the AK set I ordered back at the start of the sale, this stuff is pleasing.

sorry I keep asking for recommendations but today is my last haul for the sale and I cant decide between The Killing or Kiss Me Deadly. I actually havent seen many Noir films but both of these films look great and I love how black and white films look on blu

kiss me deadly is the better pick of those two, especially if you are looking to get into noir. the killing is more of a heist movie.

I agree with swoon, but I think both films are awesome, and if you buy The Killing, it also comes with Killer's Kiss as well, which is a nice little noir film itself. I'd say if you can afford it, try to grab both.

I picked up my last two items of the sale with The Samurai Trilogy and David Lean Directs Noel Coward. There were a few more I had my eye on like Down By Law, but I couldn't justify spending any more money. Over $200 is a pretty big haul for me, especially considering how many I already own. I guess the only blu-rays that are left that I'm interested in are just things I'm not sure about. It feels good to be caught up and only have to worry about future releases (I think? Looking at my shelf kind of scares the shit out of me). Also, can someone please buy the DVD version of Le Samourai and then swoon (har har) over it on here so they will inevitably release it on blu-ray this year so you will complain? Just saying.

RIP Chris Marker

"The great French director and writer, Chris Marker, died in Paris on Sunday at the age of 91. He is often credited as the godfather of the essay film, a blend of documentary and personal reflection. Many well-known directors such as, Jean-Luc Godard, Jean-Marie Straub and Michael Moore have based their work on Marker’s innovation."
