The definitive PS2 experience?

If you want the definitive PS2 experience, you'll probably also need some bad early 2000s music and some Gogurt.

Experience it like we did.

Gran Turismo 4 is THE definitive PS2 experience.

1080i
5.1 DTS Dolby Digital Surround
900 Force Feedback wheels support
6 screen multi-screen
6 players LAN play
online play over KAi
4MP PhotoMode > USB export, direct printer printing
+400 hours single-player mode
+1000 hours "100.000 A-Spec points" Club ultimate-achievement hunt

But GAF and majority of players do not like driving games, so nevermind.

- Okami, action is better on PS2
- FF X, the last FF being really a FF, one of the best gameplay mechanics in any RPG
- Shadow Hearts 2: Covenant, possibly the most overlooked RPG of the last gen
- Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiniy, most enjoyable Capcom game I have ever played
- Jak 2, best in the series
- Devil May Cry, is worth for the design alone
- Klonoa 2, charming and very fluid gameplay
- Twisted Metal: Black, greatest game in the genre till now
- Megami Tensei games, no HD game in the series yet
- Soul Reaver 2, plays best with pad and on TV

Tried choosing games with no sequel or proper sequel coming out as well.

There's a lot of individual games that probably won't be remade, but sequels on current platforms mean you can still play something in the same vein that's also new and shiny.

Case in point: Ratchet&Clank, Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Solid etc etc.

(Somehow, even though MGS3's better.)

My personal favorites were Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant. Such great rpgs, great characters and story, and a nice mechanic on the battle system (judgement ring), would highly recommend.

When I saw the thread title.... the first thing came to my mind were ICO and SOTC.

of course there are so many games that deserve and earned to be the definitive PS2 experience too..... but Team ICO games are something really special .

These games defined the PS2 for me under your rules:

Final Fantasy X - Amazing classic style jrpg, some of the most memorable characters in the series, the presentation for its time was off the charts.

Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter - A different style of jrpg. A very unique and underrated game.

Dragonball Z Budokai 3 - The best Dragonball Z fighter on the system, and just a good fighting game in general.
Easy to learn, hard to master. Not the most balanced game in the world but tons of fun.

Onimusha 2 - Probably the only action game that I would consider tops DMC3. The sequel starts off with you playing as a brand new character.
Your choices affect who helps you in your journey. Resulting in many different story and level paths. Amazing replayability.

Fire Pro Wrestling Returns - The best 2D wrestling game ever made, and one of the best wrestling games ever. Period.
Stands shoulder to shoulder with No Mercy and Virtual Pro Wrestling 2. It even eclipses them in some aspects.

Champions Return to Arms - Who says Diablo won't work on a console? Snowblind Studios made a bunch of action rpgs on the PS2 and this was the best of them.
Tons of classes/races/loot/skills. The controls and graphics are great, the story is decent, the overall package is amazing.

Dark Cloud - What if Link stepped into Sim City and started messing up fools? That's Dark Cloud.
The actual combat was a bit boring, but the fact that you could manage your own city broke up the monotony of the combat and presented you with a fun, unique adventure.

Shadow Hearts is completely hilarious. I also quite liked Okage.

You honestly can't do too bad by just picking up a few $5-$10 games in a bin at Gamestop. Just google them or something first. My PS2 is my favorite system just because of the huge variety of awesome games.

(Oh, and I'll kick myself if I don't mention Gitaroo Man. I freaking love that game. The PSP version is worse IMO, and it's not an HD remake, so I'm leaving it here.)

This seems like a good thread to ask:

I made the same mistake the OP made and bought a PS2 last year to fill out on what I've missed on last gen's gaming goodness.

Already started on:
- FFX
- KH
- Ace Combat 4
- DMC1

Anyway, these are on my backlog and I was wondering if some are not worth the effort:
- Shadow Hearts 1/2
- Digital Devil Saga
- Nocturne
- FFXII
- Rogue Galaxy
- Odin Sphere/ that other Vanillaware strategy game
- Valkyrie Profile 1/2
- Persona 3/4

Are there any other notable RPGs or other awesome games I do not know of that are NOT getting an HD remake?

The Warriors, if you even remotely like beat-em-ups. Do not confuse this with the terrible XBLA game of the same name. The whole entire game is like one long love letter to the genre.

I kinda wish that Bully was more like the Warriors.

The Warriors was bad ass.

So far, what I've come up with is that most of the ps2's best is or has a remake coming for the ps360, so I have to go for the more niche titles. some of which are....

Mr. mosquito
Wild arms series
shadow hearts series
grandia 3
kingdom hearts series
legia dual saga
robot alchemic drive
Klonoa
okage
Final Fantasy series
valkerie profile
romancing saga

and a bunch of others. Yes it seems that I'm more geared to Jrpg's, and that is where my heart lies, but I can't full well go for the god of wars, and the metal gears, and ico and sotc knowing that a superior version is going to be on the ps3 soon, or is already.

Not to mention the other hundreds of greats that had a superior xbox version. Even if i end up with only a collection of 5 ps2 games, I want those to be games that only the ps2 has to offer, be it top tier or otherwise....

Thanks for the recommends everyone...

At this point I seriously doubt Level 5 will release a Dark Cloud game this generation, so you may as well get part 2.

It's great.

Silent hill 2. Yes it is getting a hd remake but fuck that collection, it's going to have new voice actors and motion capture because konami are too big assholes to pay the actors who did it in the first place again, even talks of new enviroments which they will no doubt mess up as they have with silent hill ever since the original team disbanded.
