The Division - Review Thread

Jim's on point, as usual.

It's a solid meh. If you like looter-shooters, you'll have some fun. Otherwise don't bother.

I would probably go 7.0 after around 20 hours with the game. That is a what I consider to be 'good' as well. But I just think that the rewards suck and the loot is too generic.

Man, seeing a shift on this page after people are playing for several days. Went from 90+ get hype, you got learnt Destiny...

To the very same Destiny complaints of blandness, and people saying it is a solid 7.5 game.

Just as Destiny, (or other looter games), you either love it, or ho-hum.

I actually think Destiny is a much better game. I just like the loot and gameplay better. Impressions tend to settle after enough time with a game.

The main thing I agree with Jim on is that the loot is generic just higher powered. It's not generic because the higher end loot has perks, but I am guessing Jim didn't play for long enough to get to appreciate any of that. Although the loot is generic because there are no really "unique" and different fun end game weapons. The end game gear just seems to be more powerful and have OP perks. But look and feel is the same.

I feel like Jim could make his basic generic argument about any genre though. "If you like platformers, then you'll have some fun with Mario. Otherwise don't bother."

I can attest to that; the wrecked city/lockdown look has been incredibly generic so far.

As a New Yorker this game is 10/10 when it comes to setting. Going to the Times Square train station and being an exact replica to the point that I can stand on a flight of stairs where me and an ex broke up. That shit is crazy lol. It really makes you say wow.

I wish other things like Central Park and BK were in it though.

Yeah it's great, I just bought it yesterday after all the great impressions >_>

As far as "looter shooters" go, I'm enjoying this less than I thought I would. Once you've fired an assult rifle, you've fired them all. There's nothing really special about weapons with a higher rarity.

That's why I think I'd prefer looter shooters with a sci fi twist like Destiny and Borderlands. There's room to make the loot more varied. I don't know about Destiny, but in Borderlands there's a huge variety to the weapon types which makes the looting aspect a lot more interesting. You can also jump in those games....

Kinda agree with that Sterling excerpt, I have to take a break after about an hour of play or else it becomes tedious. Playing Mostly solo and matchmaking the story missions.

Enjoying the game but for a game so based on looting there are only so many times I care to loot a pair of generic jeans and beanies.
They really need exotic stuff but as far as the real world goes they gave away the most unique stuff in the game(R6, military, police and firefighter)

I'm just going to quote myself again after getter so much flack for my initial comments.
I'm very sure that this game won't have a 90 metacritic once most of the reviews from reputable sites are out. This game reminds me of Destiny in that it's going to take some time for people to come to the realization that it's not a good game. It's technically competent but it is probably one of the most generic boring games released to date. It truly doesn't shine in any category.

Loving it, didn't expect to but I am.

Best game of 2016 for me, and the biggest surprise thus far.

I fully expect the review aggregate to settle in around high 70s low 80s

It really is a polarizing set of games (Destiny/Division). I absolutely love The Division but if you're not into min/max and loot chase it's going to be a solid experience for the story/solo play but that's about it.

Either you can't get enough or it's not for you.

One thing that pissed me off that I've yet to see picked up by reviewers, there are no melee weapons!

You're in a quarantined city, basically apocalyptic scenario, and everybody's running armed to the teeth with machine guns and unlimited bullets.

I'd love some epic melee gear to bash people's head in

It's a good game. Didn't grab me off the bat like Destiny did. Not nearly as compelling. Still good though and will finish the story. I'm level 9 now so I'm sure I'll get more jackets & beanies to look forward to that no one will notice.

At least it will differentiate from nearly everyone having the same face.

I'm 30 hours in and I love it. It'll be a GOTY contender for me. I still haven't ventured into the right side of the map yet.

Also, why is no one driving a car? Did the virus also kill all the car engines?

This is something that does bug me, JTF has all those humvees but don't drive around?
get a motorcycle as some super duper ulta drop( maybe when DLC opens the other half of Manhattan)
Cleaners have garbage trucks but we never see them moving.

Knives, baseball bats(which enemies have) police nightstick?

Driving in NYC is already a nightmare before the prospects of A) having no gas, B) navigating through a sea of abandoned cars blocking the streets, and C) intentional ambushes and roadblocks by bandits.

I am honestly wanting to go back to Primal. Much more enjoyable game for me.

Funny that you say that. I chose this over primal because much as I love far cry, this was something different. I played it all day yesterday with a friend for the first time and it's ok... I am going to play it again today with that same friend and if I still don't like it I think I will trade it in for primal. Primal is on sale for $50 next week at best buy, which is $40 with gcu, so it should be close to a straight up trade if I trade it today and buy it next week.

This is one of those rare instances where the setting of a game is so off-putting that I've more or less decided to not give it a go despite being otherwise interested in the gameplay and mechanics it seems to offer.

The setup is just dumb. Well beyond the point of being able to suspend disbelief.

Thanks for the heads up.

I have not played a Far Cry game since the very first one on PC. So Primal is going to feel VERY fresh to me.

Anyone who follows Jim on YT probably saw that coming. He had impressions up for the beta and for day one, and in both his opinions were solid "meh"s.

From all the early press and impressions I've seen, I've pretty much decided to hold off on picking it up. I don't have any of my friends playing yet, I think a drop to $40 should do it for me.

I'm still very interested in seeing how well the game pans out to stuff like Year Two content.
