The Division - Review Thread

If your character in Bloodborne looks bad, it's because you didn't tinker enough. I spent an hour and got this:

Meanwhile every face in The Division....ewwwww. I had to restart because female Asian Face 03 looks good in the menu but in-game, she looks like she's a Troll doll. Some of the most horseshit character models I've seen in a long time.
Please tell me you saved the presets for this face. Gib please.

I think the reason I just haven't been able to get into this game since I gave up on Destiny, is I just find the loot all to be generic guns which make sense in this world but don't provide any variety.

I'm also find the combat to be a bit clunky for a third person shooter. I wish they made the shooting have more impact and weight to the shots.

I mean this entire post could sum up another hugely popular game. Diablo 3. Weak story check, basic, repeating gameplay, check. It's all about the loot, playing with friends, and switching out perks/skills. These games are def not for everyone

C'mon now dude, a single Diablo character has more skill/spell variation than the entirety of the three ability wings in TD. It also doesn't help that a good portion of those abilities are just kinda boring.

"But I thought he was already a girl all this time."
"What do you mean the protagonist's name is not Zelda? Why would they put her name over the protagonist?"

It's a miracle From's doing this good a job honestly. They've rarely ever produced very good visuals and aren't the largest developer, I remember trying to customize a guy's skin in Demon's Souls and I could never recreate a properly natural tone for him again. Just had to stick with this sickly... blueish skin.

People probably give games like this more crap BECAUSE they're AAA games with astronomical budgets, rather than more mid-tier budget games that have a reasonably strong fan base.

But honestly the faces in Bloodbourne are almost insulting in the way they look. Just bad. Hire somebody better if they need to. It's just unacceptable for me at this point lol. anyways it's kinda gotten off topic now haha

Regardless of more variation in skills, the core mechanics and gameplay still revolve around the same base standards of killing countless enemies, getting loot, and know how to build your class to do maximum damage, etc.

But doesn't your clothing change as soon as you get some decent gear..... that what I remember, besides looting good clothes is more fun, you can't mess with my shemagh!
Truth be told I barely ever see my face in game so clothing options are much more important.
Knee pads, gloves, backpacks, gun holsters, and bullet proof vest are the only thing that change and they are very minimal gear you see on your character.

Awesome shots!

Can I ask what image capture software you used? Please don't tell me those are just printscreens lol mine have resulted in garbage resolution. :(

Thanks! I just used the built-in uPlay screenshot button: F12. I actually would suggest against it as it captures shots in a compressed JPEG format. Go with a program like FRAPS or something for nice high quality PNG captures. Or, if you're playing the Steam version, just use Steam for captures & make sure you have "save high quality screenshots" selected in the Steam settings. In these shots I was just too lazy to close my game & open FRAPS, haha.

Is it just me, or does that Gamespot review make no sense? For all the good things the reviewer focused on with little to nothing to say about drawbacks and how addicted he was to the game, I usually see a 9-9.5 score from a review like that. Pretty odd.

Sweet, thanks! I'll try with Steam. I just found the "save uncompressed copy" in the settings. I tried with MSI Afterburner too before. Saved as PNG with 100% quality but the image still looked off. lol

Yes.

Reviewers are for once taking their time with the game, experiencing it like the public with no special treatment. After Diablo 3's review uproar I'm glad they are taking this approach to loot RPG's.

Seems like they should do this with more games but I was definitely surprised. Will probably end up with some reviews complaining of repetitive missions then

? Enemies react when shot very well.

80 hours in, level 30 and dz level 21... I think I need to take a break.

Great game.

Just a few things
  • Batmen and axe men are too OP early on
  • There needs to be a way to see your teammates weapons and mods
  • Let me see how clothing looks before I buy them
  • A full explanation of the filter/contamination zone early on would be great
  • Needs more environment diversity: harbor, suburbs, wooded parks
  • Wish it had more robust character creation
  • Was disappointed you couldn't see other players/teams outside of safe houses in single player, that may decide to help you or not (similar to Destiny when encountering other players between missions)

Aside from these things, its amazing and man, dark zone can get intense!

Ha my mistake... Only 48+ hours (more than 5 hours everyday since release). My eyes and soul hurt, and I smell like gaming and shame. But it's soooo addictive :-o

I still vehemently disagree with his Vanquish review.

...and his 9.5 to Fallout 4

The only review that bothered me by Stirling was the dying light one and it definitely seemed like he didn't finish the game before making the review. There was a while discussion on it in that thread
I have nothing personal against the guy but after giving Vanquish a 5, and heck, Assassin's Creed II a 5, and then Fallout 4 a 9.5...it's difficult for me to genuinely take his views into account because they're so off base from my own personal tastes. He's certainly damn funny though.

I really like Jim, but i'll never forget that FFXIII review. It damn near broke my mind, but I don't believe his opinion should be discounted from metacritic; Even if I disagree with it at times (Fallout 4, Xeno X, FFXIII, etc).

It can be a real slow burn after awhile, but I keep having fun. Just running around cleaning up the side missions today is probably some of the most fun I have had. I also would like to recommend switching your setups and primary weapons especially to those hitting a wall or feeling a bit burned out.

Can someone explain to me how people are playing this game for over 50hrs already? I thought there were just over 10 story missions, or are people just playing a lot of dark zone? Thinking of picking it up, just a little confused (and happy) at how much people seen to be getting out of it :)

30 story missions (later ones taking up to an hour to complete), a gazillion side quests/encounters + DZ

This game has lived up to the hype. The PvE missions are way better than I expected I'm actually interested in the story. And the missions are really fun. Also wow the soundtrack is 10/10 easy soundtrack of the year.

And then there's the Dark Zone. Wow oh wow. It's not as fun as beta but when you have those PvP moments it's unlike anything else in gaming. Truly a treat.

I would give it a 8.5/10.

There's about 40 hours of sp content and then theirs the dark zone and replaying missions

I am in the same exact boat as you.

The game doesn't actually starving in content like Destiny like what have been mentioned by some people.

I've put 40 hours already and yet to reach the level cap and endgame content.

More reviews will be coming this week. I guess it'll be on low to mid 80s overall.

I think I have a similar pace with the reviewers. I'm about to reach the level cap soon and I guess I'll be ready to give my full impressions this Wednesday. It's not a GOTY material for me, and there are some jarring negative points that I found in this game. But overall, the positives outweigh the negatives, and I can't stop playing.

Cosmetics friend, my agent looks much better than my Bloodborne character, he's got a military hat, shemagh, shade, thermals, and some nice khaki's!

Well an 8/10 from Gamespot is labelled as a "great" score, so it's still consistent with a very favorable review. He talks about repetitive side missions, not liking the endgame grind, and a few other things so I can understand why he docked the score a bit.

This is probably a good example of why review scores are so meaningless (at least as far as individual reviews go, since the value of aggregate scores for Metacritic is a different discussion). Another reviewer could've written roughly the same text and assigned it a '9/10' and similarly someone else reading the same review can say 'this game sounds fantastic and everything I want, sounds like an easy 9.5/10'. Point is everyone has their own arbitrary view of what type of review merits an '8', '9', and so forth. As long as there's some sort of correlation between the score and the text (i.e. a generally favorable review in the text doesn't get labelled with a mediocre 5/10 score) I'm ok with it, and in this case an 8/10 from Gamespot is still considered a "great score". Personally I just try to read the review text on its own and just use that as my basis of whether the game sounds like it's worth picking up.

This was guaranteed to happen. I said 85 max a few days ago.

85 feels right to me, and is a great meta score.

The game can only improve as time goes on, Massive seem to be on the ball with updates so it seems to be heading in the right direction. Glad they released the year one preview early, alleviates fears of Destiny end game feelings a bit.

With only 12 reviews and already at a 86 I'm predicting this lands around 77

Have to disagree with you on that, I can't see it going below 80 meta with the trending it has. The game is divisive, but in my opinion: that's a good thing (I generally like divisive games the most for some reason).

I'm at level 22. Been playing mostly solo and it's not an amazing single player experience but it's pretty decent. Haven't payed attention to the soundtrack. Overall the game is solid with fun moments spread through out. End game looks to be mostly dark zone, challenges, and trophy/achievements.

I give it an 8/10.
