The Division - Review Thread

Matchmaking is pretty quick with randoms, and they're usually pretty decent at the game, especially at the higher difficulties.

Thank you, that's good to know.

as someone whose gaming time is going to be cut to around same as yours, what type of games do you usually play if you don't mind me asking

Diablo 3 pretty much exclusively right now.. probably the easiest game ever to drop in and drop out of, single or multiplayer. My runs are as short as 1-2 minutes, and usually 10-12 minutes for longer ones.

I'll back this up. I've had nothing but pleasant experiences with randoms

Hell, I had an enjoyable couple of hours in the Dark Zone with three match-made randoms, without any of us using a mic

It reminded me of Dark Souls in a way

I always end up teaming with someone easily in the Dark Zones and having a blast.

Missions also have super fast MM and I've never had an issue with a bad team. Underlevelled compared to me at times but never enough to completely block progress.

The only issue is that, if you leave all the side missions to do after you've done the story, you'll be in for A LOT of repetition and it's hard to find randoms who would want to help you clean up the minimap, something that's necessary to go from lvl 29 to 30.

That actually sounds a lot more intriguing.

I honestly just hope that the "expansions" as they call them adds also something little more substantial than just maybe 1 or 2 gameplay tweaks like this. While turning the entire city into a Dark Zone sounds great, I do hope they also will add more enemy types and classes, weapons, abilities etc. Things that add more verticality to the gameplay than just more content horizontally (like more maps).
I really hope they add missions in at some point. Seems pretty daft to have all that space with nothing to do other than just shooting AI enemies or other human players.

I think about mid-80s Meta is the highest any typical Ubisoft formula game can get at, at this point. Reviewers are burnt out out as fuck on it and who could possibly blame them?

People say Syndicate is one of the best ACs in the series and it's still mid-70s, just barely above Unity. Far Cry Primal went over really well with players, but reviewed an average of 10 points lower than FC4, even.

Far Cry 3 is sitting at a 90, with Primal at 76. The games really aren't that far apart in quality, reviewers are just burnt out. It takes something like Mordor's Nemesis System to get them excited about this genre, again.

Where does PC Gamer get that 8 hour figure from? My friends and I must be playing the game wrong. Send help.

(Stats pulled from UPlay.com)
Me: Level 17 - 13.6 hrs
Friend1: Level 16 - 22 hrs
Friend2: Level 23 - 25.2 hrs

How much bigger? I mean, if the 1:1 recreation of Manhattan thing is accurate, the map is roughly 23 square miles, pretty massive by most standards.

As it stands now, the game is clearly designed for no more than 4 player co-op, the incursions might change that though.

I had players in mind, 23 square miles would be enough for hundreds. I know now it might end as some kind of small scale MMO, at best.

I guess I was misled by some sites labeling it wrongly earlier.

Looks like more longer waiting the reviews = lower score.

Yeah there's a hype bias or whatever you want to call it when something is brand new and fresh. When reviews for anything come later I bet that in general they're going to be lower. There's time to actually play it, see other reviews/opinions, find faults, and so on.

I feel bad for the Division, I feel like it deserves around 80+ average. The end game isn't good at all but I'm hoping next month's update with Incursions will change that.

What the hell is up with that Kill Screen review ?

The Perverse Ideology of The Division

One of the weirdest reviews I ever read.

Are you not familiar with KS's writing? Their critiques tend to go beyond the strict "buyer's guide" video game elements and attempt to analyse the cultural merit of the selected piece of media being reviewed.

I love the game as a video game, but I really find myself agreeing with a lot of the critiques being made in the KS review.
It's OK to like something and find fault with it at the same time.

Wow... That's... That's a very surprising score. I certainly wouldn't have given it anything below an 8. Maybe people are being more critical after the mess that was Destiny's launch?

Destiny's launch wasn't a mess. It's the same shit with any mmo style game, once you reach end game or play longer, people are likely to go from this is awesome to eh.. grind grind grind, bullshit RNG, sponge enemies...

Watched IGN talking about it on their podcast last week, not surprised. Honestly, a lot of the stuff they were saying on it was flat out wrong, and the guy reviewing it was pretty down on it for some ridiculous reasons at the time.

Destiny had an amazing raid. Strikes and pvp.. divisions end game is a mess.

I agree with ign to be honest. Game has big issues can he is right about the weapons...lvl 2 or 30 they are all the same except damage. A loot game needs unique loot.

Oh, that's their shtick then. Didn't know about them, that explains a lot. Thanks.

Sites like Kill Screen give me cancer for their overt intellectualizing and outlandish/baseless point of views. Shit is really a joke tbh.

Yeap that is a issue they can learn with Destiny... weapon variety was great on Destiny... each one feels unique shooting.

That 50/100 review, what the actual fuck lmao I didn't know Metacritic was accepting parody user reviews now.

PCGamer - 68

The end game is vapid. Daily missions unlock at level 30, but they’re just campaign levels with difficulty modifiers that reward crafting material, which I’ve yet to find useful. There’s more powerful loot to find, but it all requires serious amounts of repetition to obtain. And afterwards, there’s nothing except the same levels and enemies to test it out on.

I pretty much figured that would be the end-game. Oh well :(

Yeah, this guy is clueless. Blueprints and crafting is the only way to get the absolute best of the best high-end gear in the game.

Even if the Incursion is of similarly high quality to the main missions, it's still only a single mission.

Will a single mission hold players attention for an entire month?

It seems to be a Raid-Lite, there's another Incursion in May so it should alleviate end game woes.

As a single player only guy, I'm really afraid to drop 60 bucks on this game. I don't wanna be disappointed.. still on the fence.

I wanna get it so badly.
I'm a single player guy mainly. I did enjoy Destiny though.

What I have enjoyed in my first couple hours has been the quick matchmaking for missions in The Divison. The hardest thing for me about MP stuff is my personal schedule and having no real life friends to play with.

I completely soloed the game. I felt that was worth my $60. I played in a group today and they got in a random argument about nothing XD.

Last missions are hard tho.

Right, forgot there's another dropping in May

Still, I worry about this games post-launch support. There's a great base here, but I don't know if Ubi/Massive are up to the task of supporting it wisely.

I mean, has there ever been worthwhile DLC released for any Ubisoft game at all?

I regret buying it to be honest. It's ok but pretty bland for the most part. Massive have a lot of work to do to keep the players playing. Right now there isn't much.

You and those reviewers must've never heard/seen of superior or high-end weapons... or just haven't reached the higher levels.

Low level weapons do not have talents and bonus stats.

Its a very good game. I am enjoying it but I can already see the light at the end of the tunnel.

To me, this is not an epic never ending MMO that will sink its hooks in me. When I am level 30 I think ill be tired and throw in the towel.

I said it from day one but everyone disagreed with me. The loot is horrible. There is NOTHING unique about it at all and I have no desire to hunt gear down. I understand the game has a realistic tone to it but if they simply made it slightly more futuristic where we are just on the cusp of creating weapons with new technologies rather than standard bullets they would have something great.

fair score /raisesflameshieldforgrindinglovers

I mean it's a fair score...assuming we actually use the /10 scale correctly.

The shooting suffers from bullet sponge fatigue
The loot lacks diversity
The missions are fairly mundane.

That being said

It's technically proficient
Graphically impressive
Controls well

So a 6.7 out of 10 would be slightly above average - which is fair. The game may not be for everyone (me included), but it's certainly not a horrible piece of software.

Too bad people/publishers are conditioned to only see games that average 8/10 to be worth playing/investing in.

what? the same gun and look can be had near the beginning of the game. to shoot the same looking enemies im killing at the end of the game

Your wrong... im max level and have yelliw gear.they still all look play and feel the same. Throwing a talent on a weapon does not solve the poor loot issue.

Off the top of my head, I can think of three I really enjoyed.

The jack the ripper one for Syndicate was great.

AC4 Freedom Cry was really good

The AC3 stuff was mostly better than the base game.

If you could consider Blood Dragon DLC it was phenomenal too.

ohh and about the 6.7 review....everyone is entitled to their own opinion but my opinion is they want clicks now that the game is "old" and reviews are already out. They are late to the game and want some attention. An 8-9 wouldn't have even gotten a read.
