The Division - Review Thread

Yes! For some reason that i can not explain, i was feeling the same way sometimes.
I can only pray that Mass Effect 4 has co-op now.

It's not like it's hard to explain. There are obvious parallels. Both games are, at least during their combat, action RPG's that play as third person cover based shooters, with customization in terms of weapon choice, and neat skills on cooldowns.

ME3 had co-op, and I think we can take as given that ME4 will too. If you mean you want ME4's single player campaign to play like The Division, though, mother of god no. Let The Division be The Division. Mass Effect need take absolutely NO lessons from this. Even on those levels that the two games are similar, Mass Effect is the superior game. Better gunplay, better gun variance, more interesting abilities. Maybe they give it something in addition to a horde mode, but single player campaigns are usually made lesser in the attempt to make them facilitate group play.

Sorry for the tangent though.

More interesting abilities? Sure, though a lot of Mass Effects "varied" abilities are just variations of the same ones. You especially see this while playing the different classes in co-op.

But The Division has far better gunplay, a lot less clunkier cover based system, and the gun variance is about the same.

And I say this as someone who loves the Mass Effect series and can't wait for ME4.

Nooo, not that!! I want to play that solo.

If the solo didn't require online I would have sunk my teeth in it..
to the marrow..

all of the content is there, to basically "drm" that aspect of the game which I hear can be quite as fun and tense (rather than splitting it up as a worst case scenario a'la hitman) is hinting at an ugly future of gaming under the guise of "its mostly an mmo" that I can't support.

If you could play solo offline, cheaters could just upgrade their gear and weapons without playing before going into mp. To avoid it you'd had to separate sp and mp completely, but then you'd have a totally different game.

Yeah, this review confirmed my fear the game is boring in sp. Since I don't have a group to play with, I am going to pass on it.

For me, it's not so much that it's boring in SP, but that it feels almost unfairly difficult at times to play solo unless you are 2-3 or more levels above recommended. At least that was my experience. I hated the game the game until I started matchmaking, which for a guy like me with no friends to play with, works very well.

I agree. I was absolutely swarmed with purple energy bar enemies yesterday, all with perfect aim. Though I'm okay with playing with other people, so I did that.

It's.... ok. I've been playing solo exclusively and it's not TOO boring. But.... it does feel a bit lonely and empty sometimes.

Also, I went from DZ rank 12 to 17 last night and I can count on 1 hand the number of actual players I saw during that time. A ton of extractions where I was left to fight off the waves of arriving enemies all by myself. I died several times dropping 8 items on the ground, but was easily able to go back and get them without worry that someone would grab them first.

Maybe it's because I'm playing on PC? Dunno... the DZ just feels so empty when playing solo.

Low level DZ brackets are generally empty. Most people are rushing through level 30 then go to DZ.

It's certainly not as fun alone, but make no mistake - you don't need a dedicated group to play with. If you walk up to the mission start point and use he matchmaking feature, you can quickly throw together a 4 man squad and wind up having a great time clearing through. That's what I have been doing and it's been really enjoyable. You don't need some crack team with perfect coordination for most of the content, it's just as fun with random pick ups.

Just stopping by to say I'm loving the difficulty of the challenge modes. I'm not sure how difficulty will hold up once we're all in full 30+ HE gear but right now it's refreshing to play content that requires coordination of skills and crowd control.

This just makes me realize how much I miss burning crusade dungeons (before you could melt them with raid gear).

44 hours in and don't see myself slowing down anytime soon.

I love to fight cleaners. I just pick them off by shooting their tanks and watching them explode.

They run around like a headless chicken too <3

This is the review you should read if you're wondering about buying.

At its core it's just a typical Ubisoft open world game, with an even dumber plot than normal and huge amounts of 'typical videogame shit'.

However, multiplayer is really fun, even with random people from matchmaking. And the matchmaking is really simple for all the content, unlike Destiny's.
The RPG-elements work really well and it's lots of fun to test out different skills, especially in a group.

I don't think it'll be a GOTY winner, but I reckon it'll be at least an 'honourable mention'.
It's a lot of fun - if you like that kind of thing. But some people will think it's just a boring open world cover shooter with some MMORPG-elements bullshit sprinkled on top. Both opinions are valid.

I never played Destiny (how in the world is that game not on PC?), but to me The Division is a great template for Mass Effect 4. More RPG than a shooter, open world, loot heavy.

Been playing with my old Destiny group and we're having a blast. This game has its issues but its become our new social shooter (at least for now). A bunch of us have hit 30 and are over 100k dps and are now working on challenge missions and DZ06.

This game solo is pretty damn boring tho, so I can see where others would not enjoy it. We're still in the honeymoon phase but yeah after we all get full yellows, dunno what else there's left to do besides grind out to rank 50 DZ. Here's hoping those April and May updates are significant.

It's this game's Cabal headshots. So good.

Figures. I'm taking my time. I'm worried that there will be nothing to do at level 30 so I'm in no hurry.

Lol! I've only just reached Lvl 12 after 20hrs

Get on my level,Lvl 10 after 30hrs.
They said it's the recommended level to enter the dark zone, can't wait to go there when i get home.

For real, take your time.

The DZ is also split based on your player level: 1-15 in the first bracket, then 16-30 in the next (though a low level can join the high level bracket if a high level player invites them).

So a good idea for easily getting your DZ rank up is hitting 15, and then just spending a ton of time in the DZ. You'll be the most powerful in your bracket and can reach a high DZ rank without having to worry about bored level 30+ players attacking you.

Yup, I agree.

Until you try random matchmaking for the final mission of the game and get matched with 3 other people who don't bother to shoot the healing packs the enemy Medics are dropping and instead just keep shooting the enemies while they can heal faster than they're taking damage.

Had to vent, had that happen last night and didn't have a headset on to scream "SHOOT THE MEDKITS". We ended up not finishing the mission before server maintenance. :p

Hmmmm. For me the DZ brackets have been:

1-14
15-19
20-24
Not sure what they are beyond that, as I'm currently in the 20-24 bracket.

Can anyone help me with a simple question or two:

Thinking of getting in on this. Not played the beta, so no experience. I've played destiny but traded it in ages ago due to no matchmaking for raids. As I'm at work during the day, and have parenting duties, I don't have tons of free time and online 'friends' to play with on a regular basis.

So, want to be able to play this in my own time, but preferably with some sort of co-op (is this better than solo?). Does it support matchmaking for the campaign, strikes, raids etc?

Thanks

(or should I just get far cry primal? - yes, enjoyed 3 & 4)

Yes. This is pretty much the entire reason why I found Destiny incredibly disappointing and I'm enjoying The Division so much.

Far Cry Primal is pretty good, but easy to wait for a price drop on. The Division has the kind of matchmaking you're looking for.

Absolutely not. I like loot shooters, but that is not what Mass Effect should become and it sure as Hell better not have co-op in the campaign. No one paYs attention story in co-op games like this and you can't really do branching choices either.

Ah, I think you're right, my mistake!

I think I'm rank 24...maybe I should chill in my bracket for a bit.

The next one is 25-29, and the final one is 30.

My recommendation, as someone who did this, would be not to worry about holding back your level to stay in a DZ bracket. Your gear is outclassed so quickly anyways and you're just fine at the lower end of a bracket - there's always stuff you can do in the DZ.

Why not 7/10? That's a good score too, no?

Trying to assign a number to someone's opinion is kind of asinine.
Because they converted 8/10 to Recomended from the reviews I remember the score... 9/10 and 10/10 to Essential.

They just ate using words instead numbers but the review scale is the same yet.

People complaining about low scores need to understand that Division is a fantastic game but is deeply flawed in terms of a lack of enemy variety versus other loot driven games (like Diablo) and loot driven shooters like borderlands 2 and Destiny.

As someone who plays single player only, thats a big problem for me with Division because there are only half a dozen enemy types and they are all human (no attack dogs, vehicles etc) and they cant go nuts with enemy design like Destiny does since its real world.

I dont play PVP (dark zone) or co-op so for me it made the game very boring and repetitive after 12 hours or so. If you play with friends and/or dark zone content then this lack of enemy types is likely far less of an issue.

The game itself is just amazing looking on PC, it plays great and unlike Destiny it has actual NPC's in the world itself and tons of lore items like echoes etc everywhere.

So based on this, I can totally understand scores in the 6-10 range and wouldnt disagree with them since the value of the game is influenced by what type of gameplay you are experiencing and what aspects you value.

I'm a solo player, but today I entered the Dark Zone, found a group of almost 10 people and had a blast raiding everything. It's really easy and fun to play with randoms in this game. Also, everybody was behaving and helping each other.

I'm only level 10 (rank 15 on DZ) but I'm loving the game.

I expected it to be bit more massive (team / map sizes), but OK.

How much bigger? I mean, if the 1:1 recreation of Manhattan thing is accurate, the map is roughly 23 square miles, pretty massive by most standards.

As it stands now, the game is clearly designed for no more than 4 player co-op, the incursions might change that though.
