The E3 '08 Sony Prediction and Discussion Thread

Final Fantasy VII remake, announced tomorrow and 100% exclusive to PlayStation 3, or Sony leaves E3 with all kinds of egg on its face.

Not that that really matters, their lineup is still rad, but they are going to look like shit if they don't have something big tomorrow to cushion the blow of the loss of FFXIII as an exclusive. Time to do something awesome, Sony.

We're on most nights, sometimes we play Rfom, sometimes we play GTAIV.

So that's what was going on. I couldn't figure it out. It seemed every time I was on at night to see if the team was still going, Queeg would be playing GTAIV. So I kind of just assumed everyone moved on. I'll hop back on sometime this week, hopefully. :D

I just don't understand why Sony spends so much time and money on Warhawk, Heavenly Sword, Lair and Haze when they can moneyhat the obvious franchise that has made their console popular. If the new IP is as promising as Siren or Little Big Planet then yeah, it's understandable but those titles don't sound promising even on paper.

And yeah, PS3 seriously lacking JRPGs.

Siren and Warhawk aren't new IPs, they're both sequels/remakes, and don't lump them in with the terrible trio. =/

If you're gonna judge Sony's conference based on a FF7R level gigaton bomb, then I really wouldn't get my hopes up.

They'll have some solid titles to show, but I'd be really shocked if they had anything big to counter the loss of FF13 exclusivity.

Infamous looks hot. But ew, it's shooting but without a gun :/ hope there's autoaim.

and holy shit R2 trailer. The giant ship behind the houses O.O

You're lobbing giant electric balls at your enemies that explode and shooting a thick giant beam of electricity from your hand, I'm sure manual aiming should be fine in terms of being able to hit them somehow.

kind of agree....although now that I think about it, even though Im quite a big jrpg fan, Im not really bothered about that much beyond ff...

Come on new PS3 Wild ARMs, Ape Escape, FFVII remake, more platformers and RPGs, etc.

Im just really looking forward to the conference later.

of what? lol im so dumb. like they're making a new shooting game that has that in online matches?

MAG Massive Action Game- Man, I can't believe they kept this under wraps. 256 online players, 8 man squads, Squads lead by leaders based on rank and game play. Killer trailer. visualize COD4 x10

From earlier in the thread.

Read first. I wasn't including Siren and Little Big Planet in the list of failures. I was referring to the other titles. You can argue about Warhawk but that's not my cup of tea or my idea of a big hit game.

And I think PS3 is doing fine in other genres but RPGs. It's RPGs that they are seriously lacking. I have Uncharted , MGS4, DMC4 for my adventure fix and Siren for my horror fix but none for RPGs.

Of course I am going to. Everyone should. MS dropped one yesterday, so dropping bombs is not out of the question. If Sony can't drop bombs, they walk out of E3 with bombs dropped on them.

Which, like I said before, isn't super important since their lineup is still great, but they still look like crap as far as E3 is concerned if they can't bring something huge to the table, especially after something huge was brought to someone else's.

Glad you guys likey the trailer. :-)

Watch tomorrow for the press conference content, and later this week or early next you should get a look at the behind closed door stuff... :D

No EA @ Microsoft... I'll bet you Sony moneyhatted EA for exclusive games...

YOU MONEY HATTED THE WRONG COMPANY SONY.

Unless this means that Madden this year and every other year is exclusive to PS3, then the tide will definitely turn, and turn quickly. :lol

And Rock Band 2 was at MS' conference, but then again that's MTV Games and Harmonix, EA just distributes it for them.

I love all of you at Insomniac. Not only is Ratchet the most fun I've had on my PS3 so far, but I almost wet myself at the SF scene in the trailer. I've lived in the Bay Area my entire life and that part made me say "holy fucking shit" out loud. I cannot wait to play.

I know right!!! How grim was that scene, it was eerie seeing the city get annihilated like that.

I'd guess that tomorrow would be okay if you are not looking for RPGs in Sony lineup but otherwise you'd (read: me) will be disappointed. I do hope that Sony uses the time between this to TGS to fix their lack of RPGs problem.

Please don't lump Warhawk in that category because 1) Incog is owned by Sony and 2) it's actually a great game, and 3) Incog is a great developer.

You never know a game is going to bomb hard when you first sign a developer to a project, Factor 5 has been a reputable developer until Lair, the tech looked great, so how would Sony know they would make a dud? Heavenly Sword actually had a lot of promise, the team has amazing tech, but the gameplay just wasn't implemented well. Both teams needed people who can actually do game design, that's not something that Sony can do anything about since they don't own those two teams. Could the money have been better spent? Probably, which is why it's unlikely that we'll see a sequel to either of those games. Why spend money on something new? Because you never know if the next new first-party IP you work on will become a huge hit and drive your hardware while it's an IP that you actually own instead of having to coax a third-party publisher to give you exclusivity.

For the kind of money MS loaned R* for the DLC, they could have made TWO games like Uncharted and Resistance, so they're basically weighing between spending money on a first-party IP that they can OWN and continue to develop as well as profit from, and spending money to secure ONE chapter of a third-party IP that can potentially go to the competitor later on in the form of a sequel.

The PS3 is lacking in JRPGs because Sony Japan hasn't published any JRPG outside of Folklore, IPs like Arc The Lad and Wild Arms are both just sitting there without a PS3 incarnation, and whose fault is this? Sony Japan, but who is ultimately responsible for the fuck-up? Phil.

Thank you for making Ratchet, I had a blast with the game. (The ps3 one was my first ratchet game, and it surprised me in a very good way.)

OK it was worded a bit awkwardly.

I somewhat agree, though do we really know if HAZE was moneyhatted at all?

Sometimes game development is a risk. You take the good with the bad. I suppose that's why Phil got canned. He made too many poor decisions early on in the PS3's lifespan. He also made some good ones (LBP). But that risk is always present that you may be funding a turd. No company is immune.

But look at it another way: I honestly do not care if the Xbox 360 gets Final Fantasy XIII as well. If it would have cost 40 million dollars or something like that to lock up exclusivity, I'd rather have that money devoted to new games. You know why? I still get FFXIII AND I get more potentially big titles to look forward to.
