The Evil Within 2 |OT| "Something not quite right"

Only 20 minutes in but something was really off putting about the start, found out it's not the same voiceactor? Man I'll probably get used it but so far it's not the same sebastion.

I never get the sense that Bethesda cares for consistency in voice acting. They swapped some voice actors for DH2 coming from DH1.

Love the laser-sighted handgun and the zoom is a good blend of third-person meets first-person perspective. I don't really miss much with it.

If an enemy is in front of my aim reticle from charging me... then I retreat and put thier hitbox back to the end of my laser.

I also like maneuvering around an enemy while I pop shots into them I don't stand still and unload...since they stagger I use that moment to run to another spot aim and blast. I do this to the wandering witch enemy alot....or I stealth kill her twice.

Stealth kills are a bit more satisfying to me here. Nothing like clearing out a section using stealth, bottles, cover, and sprint.

It's sublime taking out 5 haunteds patrolling an area near each other....and stealth killing their ass undetected.

Haven't got the laser-gun yet but enjoying stealth as well. I do miss using the matches to take out multiple enemies at a time a bit, but I imagine more mechanics and weapons will open up as the game goes on. Enjoying Chapter 3 quite a bit so far (Nightmare).

There are obviously Last of Us influences here, but to say TEW takes them and outclasses it completely is a bit much.

I was thinking more in terms of the pacing of gameplay, EW2 seems much more gameplay-driven so far, I'd say 90% of my time has been actually playing the game vs. 10% watching cinematics. In TLOU I'd probably put that at closer to 50-50. I prefer EW2's structure.

In terms of pure mechanics, it's much closer. I really do wish the match system had come back, that would've tipped it without a doubt in EW2's favor. Not a fan of the stomps in comparison.

The laser zoom is great, it's just a shame that the handguns are terrible. For some reason the aiming seems really borked on them too, I always seemed to overstep the target. Might be because of the PS4 analogs. It's been a recurring problem though.

Hey guys, I don’t know if this is the right place to ask or if it should be a new thread, but I’m trying to join in on the game but I’m using the disc version of The Evil Within 2 on PS4 Pro and I get to about 6GB downloaded before the console stops reading the disc. Can anyone help me out or am I screwed??

Oh my god (chapter 3 spoilers)

the bit where you trip back to beacon and the black bars come in made me laugh so hard.

I love this fucking game.

I’m curious, for those of you that enjoyed the first game’s gore/splatter-horror approach, how do you feel about the decidedly more sterile and restrained aesthetic here?

It works for me entirely though I always thought that the first game overdid the gore in the environments to the point of it being comical so I’m curious how those who enjoyed that aesthetic feel now?

For me it works in the way I feel the first one trying to mimic a nightmare and from a derange killers mind. This one isn't the case and Sebastian knows what he is going into, a semi controlled enviroment. I did it and it gives the sequel just enough of a new taste along with refinements to make it stand out like a sequel and not a retread.

I can't decide if I hate the look because it's sterile or if I hate it because the lighting is just shit, to be completely honest.

What are some of the "MUST HAVE" upgrades asap in the early game?

For weapons I guess I'll pump up their damage levels but for Sebastian I'm not too sure.... I guess the corner stealth kill is a must have because I'm sick of enemies walking towards my cover and can do nothing about it...

...Speaking of things I can do nothing about... Is there a better way to deal with enemies pretending to be dead? Something like a stealth kill or... matches >_> Like, I can see you dude... You're of a different lighting...

I like it when sequels feel distinct. The first game generally had fantastic art direction though it got over bearing at times- I think I kind of tapped out on slimy, mudcaked dungeons around Chapter 7 or so.

TEW2 still manages to still feel surreal but in a manner quite distinct from the first. If there is a third game I hope they once again go for a different feeling.

Plus, I really, really dig the Resident Evil 2 vibes this time out.

What's up with ghost girl? I finished the game and there was no resolution there, not even a backstory beyond that crappy journal entry you find in chapter 3. Did I miss some final encounter? It feels like a wasted opportunity, she was way more interesting than any of the main antagonists

I preferred the first game's aesthetic so far. The gore/splatter was so over-the-top that it crossed the line twice and became creepy instead of corny. It was so in-your-face that it actually played well off of the psychological dread and turned into this bizarre cocktail of slasher film/mindfuck.

TEW2 so far is pretty tame, just looks like any random horror game. I'm hoping it gets crazier as it goes on.

Bottle Break will save your ass and isn't too expensive, I recommend it.

One question, do enemies respawn after you clear an area?

Sometimes more will appear if you trigger an event. When I went to the second safe house in ch 3 a few more spawned in a cleared area.

But in general you can be somewhat sure that areas you cleared out will be safe for awhile.

Played more today, the game is definitely fun to play and well designed gameplay wise.

However, In order to enjoy the game, I have to pretend that I am playing a new western IP instead of a sequel to The Evil Within. It is just too different, from the tone to the art direction, everything is completely different.

This is definitely a fun zombie & horror shooter, but not really a Evil Within game in my opinion, it's just too western. If you are one of those people who LOVED the first Evil Within like me, I think it is better for you to not expect a Evil Within 2 here, but a entirely new game instead.

I think I would still enjoy this game's gameplay, but at the same time I can't help but feel disappointed, this isn't a sequel to Evil Within, this is more like a western reimagination or reboot. Take it what you will.

I hope whatever Mikami is working on will impress me like the first Evil Within did, The Evil Within was truly something unique in my honest opinion, the more times I played it and the more I think about it, the more I love the game.

Alright solid. I appreciate the info.

I think it's a pretty good Psycho Break game ;)

Yeah, that part was great. I'm a sucker for when games
reference previous games. Also I know I'm crazy, but that kind of made me miss the black bars.

Oh boy, Chapter 10 spoilers, but just got to TEW2's
Resident Evil 4 Cabin
-esque moment. That was a bit tough on Nightmare.

I don't know. I think the writing (plot and dialogue, scenario design), mocap, cutscene direction, and a lot of the art direction are extremely Japanese. Probably because Japanese people wrote it and it was worked on in Tokyo. I can't really think of it as a Western game. On top of that, the gameplay is basically lifted from the first, outside of the open areas. Aside from the open area design, the only parts that really feel western are the game engine and the sensibilities it has in terms of presenting the plot to the player -- which is far more straightforward. Oh, and the voice direction.

The setting itself is "Americana" for reasons to be revealed. I don't know if that helps color your impression.

Played 2-3 hours of chapter 3 and I'm not really enjoying it. Because of the slow way I play sandbox games exploring every building and grabbing every item and doing every sidequest the progression just feels really really slow and unexciting. I'm not even at the first main quest orange marker. The first area with just level 1 zombies should not be this long and drawn out. It'd been a while so I'd forgotten the first game a ton but playing this brings back memories and I really liked the creepy wtf level design progression of the original. Was sort of dark and magical and you never knew what was going on. Chapter 3 feels kinda boring in comparison. This sandbox style chapter feels more like The Last of Us than The Evil Within 1.

Gonna push through the chapter and finish exploring it out and hope the next chapter hooks me back on again because if every chapter was like this I could see myself getting bored to the point of just shelving the game :|

I’m at this Tredwell Trucking place and I’m not sure how to get to this one area behind a locked door
. I turned on some switch that turned on the lower so that I can go inside the place, then some guy walked by all bloody and died. Then I knocked down a red canister expecting a fight but there’s nothing but a locked door that can only be opened from the other side. How do I get there?

Continue the main story.
Asking again since new page, but at what point in the game do you receive the preorder dlc stuff?
As soon as you get to the open world.

Is it just me or is it pretty easy to fill out the skill tree early?

If you go by total chapter count, I'm less than halfway through the game, but I pretty much have every skill/upgrade I need. I guess I'll just dump the rest into Health/Stamina boosts?

I was considering saving up for the 75k ability, but it sounds like it might break any difficulty in half. And the game so far has already been a lot easier than the first on Survival.

It feels pretty dull to me. After seeing how great the art direction was in the DLC for the first game I had thought they were really going to nail it in the sequel, but everything feels so flat, static and sterile. I can only assume it was a constraint of creating these large open areas which kept them from being able to focus on making more detailed environments. It also feels as if they toned down the horror aesthetic to focus on the more psychedelic elements, but even those still feel restricted.

It says in the difficulty selection that Nightmare is intended for players who enjoyed the difficulty in the first game. Survival is easier than in the original. In Nightmare I've felt pretty limited on what upgrades I can get because I have to avoid enemies a lot more since resources are very scarce.

I asked this before but no one answered. Any place where I can read the plot summary of the DLC from the first game?

YouTube man. Don't have the direct link but I remember watching it a few months ago.

I'm about 3-4 hours in....this game is legit! Huge improvement over the first.

Is this game supposed to be played by using stealth most of the time? I can't see this as an action game. Bullets are really sparse as with most ammo. So far I've maxed out my inventory for bullets in most categories and I'm afraid of using it because I don't want to be caught with my pants down when I will most need it. How are you all playing this?

Whats with these complaints about the pistol? It's great and thank god its not another crappy revolver like the first game. Now the bullets actually go where the crosshair is. It was good to begin with but after upgrading crit chance on headshots it's a murder machine. I also love how the different pistols will share upgrades so you don't have to commit to one.

Honestly if you are complaining about the enemies being too fast then you need to just practice and learn to sprint dodge them to reposition yourself. The enemy behaviors and animations are one of the best and most challenging parts of the game. They aren't going to slowly shamble toward you while you take all day to aim at the head. The introductory cutscene showing the first enemy taking two headshots is a good way to teach the player that this isn't the same old zombie head pop. The crazy and frantic movements they do keeps their head moving and you really do have to think carefully about whether to go for the headshot or try to slow them down with some body or leg shots so you can precisely aim.

So far the weapons feel is S++ in this game.
