What? That sounds more like it would be detrimental to a show. Wouldn't the writers already have their plot/show planned for 13 episodes? Suddenly, they'd have to tack on another 9 episodes?

Or am I misunderstanding your comment?

Nope, that's essentially how American TV has functioned for well, ever.

And the show is basically a lock for a full season.

Remember that really good season of 24 the one with the evil president? They wrote that by the seat of their pants. They had the benefit of knowing before hand exactly how long the season will be but that is also a monumental task of making that shit up as they go along.

Most of the time writers don't have all of the scripts necessary to complete a season by the time they start filming. Some times they don't even know where the season is going to end.

They plan for whole season, but also aim to have a semi resolution for episode 13, so it works somewhat if they don't get picked up for more episodes.

- THR: Grant Gustin on 'The Flash': "My Favorite Character That I'll Ever Get to Play"
Felicity's (Emily Bett Rickards) drop-by in episode four "does complicate things for Barry," he hints. "We left their relationship on a weird note [on Arrow], but she's also in a weird predicament with Oliver where she clearly loves him. Barry and Felicity clearly have a lot in common but I don't know that any of those relationships are going to work out. At the same time, it's not something he can worry himself with too much right now."

i liked barry/felicity a lot more than any of the olicity teases. the chemistry worked a lot more imo.

i wouldn't mind felicity moving shows, but then that's just too much hotness for the flash between her and iris.

green arrow always gotta get down with black canary anyways. (sara lance, hell no to laurel)

Hell...no. we need Felicity in Arrow. She's the main source of humor there. Oliver can be very funny, but it's very very dark type of humor :D

I don't think a single show can contain the mouse-ish-ness of both Felicity and Barry.

going through Arrow S1 on ep 18, better than i thought. I know its a spinoff but do i need to watch S2 to not miss any crossover info for Flash?

It would be helpful to watch a good chunk of S2 before watching The Flash. I'm sure they'll make it clear enough what you missed, but I can say I am glad to have watched Arrow S2 (especially a couple eps in particular in the first half) before The Flash.

hopefully they do spinoffs correctly tvd/the originals do it so wrong.

Nina Dobrev playing 1 of the many dopplegangers is not a crossover

Apparently, Booster Gold might be in this too.

In other character news, it sounds as if Booster Gold may end up joining The Arrow and The Flash in this world, as Johns noted: "There’s no rights issues and quite honestly Andrew and Greg have a great Booster Gold script, and Booster Gold’s a beloved character, so I would say chances are good [he will appear]."

Ummm, holy shit! Cannot wait for this.

Definitely a character as different from the Arrow as Flash is. Arrow is the brooding avenger, Flash is the flashy superhero, while Booster would be the douchebag-turned-true hero.

But I think if they do another spin-off we should get a female lead (unless they want to fold The Avenger into the Arrowverse) or a team show (SUICIDE SQUAD LED BY MANU).

Hopefully he's better than the Smallville Booster Gold... Actually I don't remember much from how they used him.

I have plenty of faith that they will since being "comicbooky" isn't treated like a bad thing like it was with much of that show

- TV: The Flash Is Out to Make Superheroes Fun Again: EP Andrew Kreisberg Teases Arrow's Zippier Cousin.
How quickly will we find out what happened to Barry's mother?

The mystery of what happened to Barry's mother and everything that happened that night will be answered over the course of the first season. We don't believe in stringing people along for too much. There's a very clear mystery and a very clear plot and a very clear Big Bad who will emerge, and we have all that worked out. At the end of this year, you will feel like you got the satisfactory answers to your long mystery [as well as the launch of] new mysteries.
Will The Flash maintain a case-of-the-week format, with Barry going up against different meta-humans?

The destruction of the S.T.A.R. Labs and the creation of the meta-humans is the great engine for the series, but we have Captain Cold coming up and we have Heatwave and we have the Pied Piper, who are all human villains with superior technology. It's not going to be monster-of-the-week. Sometimes it's villains who have technology. We already have some villains who are going to be recurring throughout the course of the season, and I think, like on Arrow, there's always the case-of-the-week to drive it, but [there are also] the ongoing mysteries and relationships. And the mysteries that come up in subsequent episodes, that haven't even been alluded to in the pilot, that we will pick up. Certainly we have the mystery of Firestorm, Robbie Amell's character, and what happened to him the night the accelerator exploded.

Firestorm? The Ronnie Raymond Firestorm? So he's gonna be having conversations with himself? Nice to see Robbie Amell back after The Tomorrow People got canceled. I want to see more Cara.

One of the best things about Arrow and thankful that will continue with The Flash. None of that five or whatever seasons to get answers or to see what you've been waiting for since the first episode shit with these guys well at least for the most part.

I'm glad they're going the classic tech route with Captain Cold and Heatwave, makes them cheaper to do VFX for too I imagine. Though I wonder if somewhere down the line they'll end up inline with the current comic versions with being meta humans. I still like the idea of using both eventually and their tech evolve to where it makes their abilities stronger if it ever comes to that, assuming it'd be something for like season three or whatever.

I wonder how they're gonna roll with Ted Kord. I honestly loved Jaime Reyes in young justice. Listening to the scarab make Psychotic suggestions while Jaime shoots them down was so good.

Series premiere today:
Season 1: episode 1 "City of Heroes"

Nine months after the Star Labs explosion, Barry awakens to find a lot has changed while he was in a coma. With his new friends and powers Barry must try to right the wrongs of his new Mentor and Owner of Star Labs.

The show is full of possibilities. I'd guess S1 will be an origin of sorts for The Rogues (go from criminals to supervillain criminals with costumes) as well. And can't wait for the bad puns/foreshadowing when Caitlin hears about Captain Cold.

CR: Guy gives me the chills.
CF: I think it's cool.
CR: I get a bad vibe.
CF: Chill out.

Oh man, and Booster being awful and letting slip about people's futures. I am beyoned giddy...

- Sepinwall's review
I like "The Flash" at this stage a lot more than I did "Arrow" after its solid but unremarkable pilot episode. It helps that many of the key creative people worked together on the previous show and have learned some lessons about what does and doesn't work in a superhero TV show. But the lighter and more optimistic tone is unexplored territory that could be tough to navigate at any speed. For the first hour, anyway, "The Flash" makes it look easy.

NPR review
I like Gustin, I like Martin, I like Shipp, and I'm crazy about Cavanagh. The character of Iris needs work, as in the pilot she mostly exists to pick the wrong boyfriend and ignore the right one, but on the whole? Pretty good. And for a pilot, particularly this season, "pretty good" is pretty good.

Okay this is hilarious
It totally is XD

The speed force is utterly ludicrous. He's basically God.

Well played.

Brilliant XD

Everyone knows red cars go faster.
Red things go at least three times faster.

Huh, had bailed on Smallville around S6 or so, never knew this happened :O

Very interesting, makes me more excited for this :D

Woooooooooo today's the day! I hadn't watched the leaked pilot, so I'm amped.
Heh, same!
Although tomorrow for me :(

“If you saw the pilot illegally, you have to still watch,” executive producer Greg Berlanti pleads with a hearty laugh. “[There are] three extra minutes!”

All jokes aside, The CW’s new super series picks up months after Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) was in a freak accident that turned him into the fastest man alive during last season’s Arrow. “Even though it is a spin-off, you don’t need to have watched a minute of Arrow to enjoy the Flash pilot,” executive producer Andrew Kreisberg says.

“Or have ever watched a superhero show period,” adds DC Comics chief Geoff Johns. “It really gets you in through the characters. It’s a character drama that happens to be a superhero show. The best superhero stories are metaphors for other emotional journeys that just put this glitz and glamor on top of it to make it fun.”

But for those who are comic-book fans, the show embraces superhero lore, so the pilot alone is chock-full of Easter eggs and nods to the rest of the DC universe. (Check back after the premiere to get some answers in that regard.) “We were saying on the set, it’s the most DC DC thing ever,” Kreisberg jokes.

Honestly don't know much about The Flash from comics lore, but like Arrow, and how awesome it is im more than willing to be educated.

GOT HYPE.

If this even has a fraction of the awesomeness that made Arrow so immensely enjoyable it'll be fantastic. Think it's so cool to have two (hopefully) good superhero shows now with both Arrow's continued excellence and now the genesis of The Flash.

Evaded the leaked pilot so tonight's episode will be completely new for me. Pumped.
