The Formula 1 2011 Season of Vettel Fingering the Competition |OT|

I'm amazed no-one gif'd Hamiltons face when Vettel was talking in the press conference. It looked like he was imagining murdering someone. lol

Also... what must be going through Mark's head when he sees Vettel doing that with the same car. I'd be so crushed by this point.

The world desperately needs an advancement in battery technology. All our gadgets are being held back by them. So if F1 can push it along, I'm all for that.

Vettel only did that to get the achievement.

Fucking hell. Only know the results... what happened with Webber? Traffic or mistake or something?

I bet this is the race where he nails his start... when he's on the third row :/

OH yeah, i was watching F1 on Sky HD this morning.

IT WAS GLORIOUS. And it seemed smoother than SD coverage as well.

Bring on tomorrow!

Mark just knows that everyone finds it cooler that the front runners have to do some overtaking to win a race.

He's doing us a favour by holding back actually.

maybe that's the reason why his starts are soooooo bad.

Vettel could be in trouble if he is not 1st after the first chicane, so his opponents think. His 7th gear is very short.

Hopefully that short 7th ratio bites him in the ass tomorrow.

Quietly confident for the Mercedes tomorrow, hoping one of them could snatch 3rd, or at least come close.

Maybe you should watch it downstairs in HD rather than watch the SD version in your room?

I already have..

The 'SD' is a bazillion times better than last year's coverage, and I'm still convinced the Le Mans HD is better than FOM HD, so convenience > FOM HD.

I wouldn't be able to activate insta-Hamilton-GAF defence if I was downstairs too.

Just rubbish talk again. Vettel will finish on the podium regardless of what happens, even if the engine blows up he'll somehow make it onto the podium.

That's why you have a laptop or phone to browse F1-GAF or other GAFs while watching F1 in the living room. :D

Really looking forward to tomorrows race, the 2nd DRS zone will make for an interesting new dynamic on the way down to Ascari, from memory very few drivers have managed to make a pass stick there as positioning on entry to the Ascari curves is super critical, all a driver's had to do to foil a faster car is move towards the outside after the 2nd Lesmos leaving the door open on the inside as a tight entry into Ascari is always a slow exit leading to the overtaken car being able to snatch the position back on the run down to Parabolica. The only drivers I can think of that have made that pass stick over the last decade or so are Mika Hakkinen, Michael Schumacher and Jenson Button. (Jenson also being one of the few drivers to make a pass between the 1st and 2nd Lesmos stick too IIRC.)

Vettel going short on 7th gear is interesting too, faster acceleration at the cost of a slower top speed means his DRS isn't going to help him as much as the others, as nearly all of this seasons DRS-enabled passes have been at the mid-straight to end-straight position, however with his pole start and faster accel he's going to be hard to catch, but if he *is* caught, he's hosed IMO.

I know someone on here asked for pictures of the MP4/5B I'm working on. Keep in mind I'm no master model maker but I do put some effort into it.

Started with the engine. The cables will be painted black but they are bare metal for now since I cannibalized them from twist ties. The clear hose and connector will be redone to simulate a braided hose. I've still got more detail work to do so I'll post more pictures as I progress.

As before, if anyone has any reference pictures for the 1990 MP4/5B engine, cockpit or without the monocoque I'd be greatly appreciative. Now to work on the preview.

Vettel is what happens when you have a top driver in a top car at the height of his confidence. Magnificent performances.

Too bad most people can't appreciate that are are too busy wishing ill will instead.

Formula 1 comes to Italy where a sea of red in the stands will be yearning for a Ferrari victory. With the end of the season closing fast, drivers are desperate to get a result that will reign in Vettels lead. This may be the track to do it since this is a location that plays to the strengths of straight-line speeds with long, flat-out sections deep in the Italian forest.

2010 Race Summary

At the start of the race, Jenson Button had a fantastic start, jumping his McLaren from second past Fernando Alonso's Ferrari. Alonso, who was alongside with his team-mate Felipe Massa through the turn one chicane, just clipped the rear of Button's diffuser, but there was only light damage to the McLaren. As the pack headed down to the second chicane of turns three and four, Button's team-mate Lewis Hamilton, who was in fourth, tried to pull a move on Massa, but there was contact between the two. Although Lewis tried to carry on, the front track rod was broken and he pulled up at the next corner. Massa managed to carry on unscathed. Kamui Kobayashi did start the race but retired his BMW Sauber on the first lap with a gearbox failure.

Meanwhile, Mark Webber in the Red Bull was going backwards from his fourth place grid slot, and he was ninth at the end of the first lap. He soon re-passed Michael Schumacher's Mercedes at the second chicane on lap 6, with a calm and collected move on the seven times world champion. A hydraulic failure made Bruno Senna's HRT the race's third retirement on lap 11.

Alonso was harrying Button all the way, and drama occurred further back on lap 20 as Webber's team-mate Sebastian Vettel, who had also had a bad start, dropping from 6th to 7th and was harrying Nico Hülkenberg in the Williams to take the place back, complained of an engine issue in the Red Bull's Renault power unit. Webber sailed past and Vettel was just dropping back into the clutches of compatriot Schumacher when he suddenly regained power, and began to close in on Hülkenberg and Webber.

Button made his pit stop on lap 36, and by staying out for one lap longer Alonso was rejoin ahead of Button after his stop, although his team-mate Massa actually held 1st for two laps before his own pit-stop relegated him back to 3rd. It was very tight as Alonso exited the pits, but the Spaniard just managed to stay ahead by holding the racing line as the two were side-by-side through turns one and two. Jarno Trulli was the race's next retirement in the Lotus with a gearbox failure on lap 46.

After even more off track adventures for Hülkenberg, he was finally passed by Webber with just four laps to go, and the Aussie was visibly frustrated by then. On the same lap, Lucas di Grassi's Virgin suffered a suspension failure. After his phantom technical failure, the Red Bull mechanics had decided to leave Vettel's stop to the very last lap, which they did, and the gamble paid off handsomely as the German emerged from the pits still in fourth place, ahead of his team-mate.

Alonso crossed the line in first place to the delight of the Tifosi, with Button still less than three seconds in arrears. Massa was third to complete a fantastic double home podium for the Scuderia, while Vettel drove a brilliant recovery drive to bring the Red Bull home fourth, holding off a late challenge from Nico Rosberg, who had had a quiet race for Mercedes. Webber, Hülkenberg and Robert Kubica's Renault were all in close attendance, while Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello's Williams rounded out the points.

-The length of kerbing has been altered to prevent cars leaping across them. There are no other major changes.

GP Facts

-Monza has hosted Formula One in several different circuit configurations. The fastest – and most notorious – was the layout used four times between 1955 and 1961, featuring steeply banked concrete curves, into which cars were ‘compressed’ each lap, owing to the tremendous forces on their suspension. Growing safety concerns and a fatal accident to German Ferrari driver Wolfgang von Trips, on lap two of the 1961 race, after a collision on entry to a banked section, led to its use being discontinued for Formula One.

-Of 98 Italian drivers to have raced in Formula One, only 3 have won the Italian Grand Prix: Nino Farina in 1950; Alberto Ascari in 1951-52 and Ludovico Scarfiotti in 1966.

-Italian teams have, however, been rather more successful at Monza, taking a total of 22 wins since 1950. They are Ferrari (18); Maserati (2); Alfa Romeo (1); Toro Rosso (1). Alfa Romeo, in fact, won the very first Formula One Italian GP at Monza, with Nino Farina driving; last year’s race was won by Fernando Alonso for Ferrari.

-No Italian has won the Formula One World Championship since Alberto Ascari in 1953; the last Italian to win a Grand Prix was Giancarlo Fisichella, for Renault, in Malaysia, 2006.

-The main straight at Monza is the third longest in Formula One, at 1120m, just behind the back straight at Shanghai International Circuit (1170m) and Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina (1140m). The circuit’s high-speed nature means that 83 percent of the lap is spent at ‘full throttle’ – the most of any 2011 circuit.
