After ditching cable tv, I haven't been able to watch F1 in a while until yesterday. I went o a Meetup group gathering in town to watch the China GP. WOW! What a race but what an experience to watch it with a room full of enthusiasts. The cheers, gasps, claps, all made it such a great time! I'm sold, that is the best way to watch, short of being there in person!

How did you find them? I'm looking to do the same thing. I just watched Senna last week and really, really, really want to get into F1 but don't know anyone who cares. I live in Raleigh, NC btw.

I know one guy that likes F1 but he hardly ever watches the races live so I make every attempt to watch the live BBC coverage so I can chat with F1 GAF at the same time. It really makes it fun for me. It would be amazing to have a watch party with 20+ people getting excited for the races but being in central Oklahoma, the chances of being able to get that going are pretty slim.

I just looked up F1 on Meetup.com and found one near me (Seattle, but they meet in Redmond at an English pub). If no Meetup groups are in your area, I'd check out English or European bars/restaurants since they do cater to people who like more global sports (F1, soccer, etc).

This isn't really how KERS works though, they don't suddenly have full KERS once they cross the Start/Finish line, that diagram is there just to simplify things. If they used all their KERS up before crossing the line, they won't have any more until after braking into turn 1.

I know what you mean, but their allowance to use it (the 6 seconds) does get "replenished" so to speak on the start/finish straight. Hamilton had enough KERS in his battery to get a boost out of the final turn and had still enough energy left to tap into on the pit straight after his allowance got replenished.

What an incredibly awesome race, but I have a question for you guys:

Which do you enjoy better Formula One racing or Indy Car racing?

I watched an Izod Indy car race a few weeks back at Long Beach here on ABC TV, and it didn't really seem all that exciting compared to what I witnessed last night. So which is more exciting to you, and which is more popular around the world?

I'd watch Indy races if we had decent transmissions, if the races were not sooooo long and if it had not oval circuits. :p

And BTW, F1 is waaaay more popular around the world. F1 is the top of the top.

Okay so it wasn't just me who noticed.

I watched Malaysia at a friend's house with another of their friends. Was a lot of fun, just like every hobby it's much more fun to share the experience.

Well, no one answered so....

I'm not sure posting in an f1 thread asking if the people there prefer indy car racing to f1 really warrants a reply, never mind being asked twice.

Indycar can be decent. Long Beach is a snoozer though. I actually prefer some of the oval tracks over the boring road courses they have (Texas being just kick ass to watch with all the sparks and the insane speed).

Rumours saying Ferrari are going to use Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne.
Ferrari upgraded their own wind tunnel from 50% to 60% scale over the winter and it looks like it's not right as they are suffering from front downforce issues.

There is a joke in here somewhere to do with Toyota copying Ferrari designs again..

I'm not mocking you, but I find asking the same question twice in a thread because you didn't get enough responses a bit....odd.

But whilst I'm here I will answer you - I watch the occasional IndyCar, but the problem is I don't care all too much because its the other side of the world and stays pretty much in the US alone. I find F1 more global and encompassing, plus has a larger UK interest so naturally my interest goes up.

Why not? No harm in it. I'm sure a sizeable portion of the people that post in here follow more than one motorsport.

They were already using the Toyota wind tunnel since before the season began, something to do with being able to spend more money if they outsource.

Was about to post this. IIRC Toyota's wind tunnel was the largest/best in F1 before they pulled out (Could be wrong...sure I read that somewhere though).

By using Toyota's wind tunnel, Ferrari can spend more of their budget on upgrade packages.

I figured this might the case. I understand now why it's so popular. What I saw on TV from Indy racing doesn't compare to what I saw Sunday morning. It was almost night and day. I know where my viewing will be focusing on from now on :)

Would you say F1 is more popular than Football(soccer)?

Football is huge, you can't compare the two in scope. There are dozens of high-level (national) football matches every week. Motorsport vs. football would be a better comparison, and I'm pretty sure football wins that too.

You can't compare motorsport and football. The logistics are totally different, hosting a football match each weekend is far easier than hosting a motorrace ever weekend (on the scale of F1).

Motorsport's pretty niche around the whole world I'm afraid, the various disciplines have hardcore followings but in terms of global popularity they all pale in significance to football and other sports. Shame really, there was a time when the WRC (group B era) and Le Mans (group C era) were up there with F1 in terms of popularity and in general.

Seriously and as a young fan of motorsport, I feel like I missed out on the prime time (born in the late 80's). I remember going to Sear's Point, now Infineon as a kid to see those old Jaguars and the like race. One of my earliest/fondest memories of motor racing. Glad that now that I'm getting back into it F1 is exciting again. Although 2009 was a bit boring, it has been interesting to see these new rules and developments come forth and evolve.

Definitely optimistic with the events of last race and young drivers coming in.

Certainly not! I think I might even re-watch the last 10 laps tonight, if Portal 2 hasn't come out that is.

Has anyone got any classic F1 images to share? I think it'll help pass the time between now and the Turkish GP.

This is brilliant, have you got a much larger version? EDIT: Found, but it's imageshack, so I can't link it?

Graham Hill is still the only driver in the world to hold the triple crown of motorsports.

EDIT: This is the Nurburgring btw ;)

Thanks for the awesome pics guys!

[edit] Oh damn at the big chart. I'm connected to an A0 colour printer too... grant me strength!

I was in shanghai for the weekend. here is my crappy iphone vid of the start.
http://www.megavideo.com/?v=7JU77ZPV

excellent spot, if you decide to go to the track, the B-stand section is the 'eau rouge' area of the track, you see the exit of a slow corner to the S/F straight, the brake zone of 1, the fiddly 2&3 and if you are high enough, some of 6.

the DRS zone was on the back straight, but t1 was the 'second overtake zone'. as we all saw, cars closed up at the hairpin allowing them to position into a tow on S/F straight and sealing the deal in T1.

shanghai as a location is interesting. its like a flash gordon set (the bund) build in a combination Dump/building site.

Singapore GP next!

Mclaren also planned 2 stopper in China, but they switched tactics during the race. They will bring numerous new updates in Turkey.

Ferrari is researching why their pace suddenly drops on harder tyres, but they will have to step it up, because their quoli pace is still way behind RBR and Mclaren (using more sets of tyres)

Several teams are still worried how will tyres behave in notorious turn 8 in Istanbul. Even harder compound will not be used.

Drivers I like because of their personality and driving:
Button, Webber, Vettel and Barrichello.

Drivers I like because of their driving:
Kobayashi, Hamilton and Rosberg.

Drivers I hate because they're cunts on and off the track:
Schumacher and Alonso.

The rest I'm fairly indifferent to. I'm warming to Petrov and I obviously loved Kubica.

Yet they are the two most successful drivers on the grid and have proven many times they can get results in a car that is not the quickest.

I never denied that they're good drivers. Still fucking hate them and would love to see them out of the sport, though.

Care to explain why? Ignoring Schumacher's Ferrari years, and Alonso's stint at McLaren, they're both pretty likeable guys now imo.

Schumacher sure can still be a dick at times on the track, but off the track it's like he has a whole different personality compared to 5 years ago. And I fail to see how Alonso is a cunt, especially off the track, IIRC he's never blamed the team.

But then of course, it could just be the standard F1 bandwagon hate ;)

Only conclusion, for anyone to say that Schumacher is a cunt of the track, there something wrong with you, and as for on the track, are you going to call senna a cunt too ?
