Can't tell you how happy I was when Alonso made that start and stayed 1st after a few laps, but I knew Ferrari were going to fuck up his strategy and in the end the best he could hope for was 5th. They really need sort their shit out.

It was an amazing start. One of THE best.

Thing is, with Ferrari's pace, they were never going to stay permanently in front of the Maccas and RBR - they were so slow he was always going to get beaten out of one of his 4 pit stops. It was only a matter of time.

Also, where the hell are the crashes? I'm seriously starting to crave some. If Monaco doesn't have at least a few big ones I'll be very sad.
I'm certainly not wishing harm towards anyone, but you're right, a crash or two wouldn't go amiss. That and I want unreliability back too, take the 18,000rpm limit off the engines please.

There was a really wicked crash in GP2 in Turkey.

Am I right in thinking that all of the top 5 finishers in Catalunya, except Button, used two sets of hard tyres? If so why was this?
He messed up his start very badly, so they switched his strategy to 3 stopper. Button is very good at nursing tyres so he could stay out longer and used only one set of hard tyres for last stint.

I think that Mclaren improved on tyre management. They seem quite light on tyres, better than RBR.

Sorry I didn't word it very well. My question was more did the other 4 drivers use 2 sets of hard tyres, and if so why? Did they run out of softs?

They used all softs, so they switched to hards for last two stints.

And we could see how important is keeping fresh rubber for the race. Alonso was dead in the water, when all around switched to fresh softs - at least for now, only RBR and Mclaren can save additional set for the race.

I really think that heads will roll in Maranello, if they will still be behind in Canada.

So is this correct?

Vettel: soft - soft - hard - hard
Hamilton: soft - soft - hard - hard
Button: soft - hard - hard
Webber: soft - soft - hard - hard
Alonso: soft - soft - hard - hard

It's on F1Fanatic.

I'm pretty sure Button went soft-soft-hard.

Alonso showed how completely handicapped the red bulls can be when in dirty air [on tracks like this] ... hopefully the other teams can take advantage of this in upcoming monaco, canada, and other smaller tracks

Son of a biiiitch. They should have at least had the replay or mentioned it.

The SPEED coverage did mention Massa pulling off and show it. They talked about whether or not the safety car would need to be deployed then they saw how far he was off the track. I didn't watch the BBC coverage at all and distinctly remember seeing Massa's Ferrari beached.

If you want crashing watch the GP2 races for sure. I bet Monaco will have its fair share of F1 and GP2 carnage.

I spent some time this weekend watching the Indy 500 qualifying and I was happy for Simona de Silvestro being able to make the field after this bad crash on Thursday in practice. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KpFwBbJoQFM

There was lots of drama during qualifying because of the weather. Next weekend is huge for Motorsport. Monaco GP, Indy 500, Coca-Cola 600, etc...

Well why wasn't I paying attention. What the fuck man?! :p

I have a feeling Monaco is going to be quite intense. Friend and I were wondering how they would have DRS, makes more sense if they remove it from the circuit like someone mentioned but having it through the tunnel would be crazy.

I think this session of qualifying is going to shake things up quite a bit so i'm so looking forward to that and Monaco.

Monaco will be fun, but I can't wait for Canada.

Can't wait to see if the tyres wear miles more than they have so far.

would be interesting to see this from Vettels perspective, did he had to lift throttle because of Webber starting slow and his block? Alsono blasts trough flatout

Alonso used ALL of his KERS. I'm not sure if everyone usually uses all their KERS on the run into turn 1, but I know for sure that Alonso did.

They use around 75% of all KERS on the start. It is better to have some for several next corners, because you can be unter attack and must defend with KERS.

Our F1 commentator just wrote that apparently there was quite heated meeting in Maranello and this could be last season for several key men in Ferrari's garage if their continue in this way.

Also, which tyre compounds will be in Canada? Medium and super hard?

Also, 88 overtakes in Barcelona, more than in previous 13 GPs combined

It's boring to watch if nobody crashes.
Crashes are a large appeal of Monaco, I agree, but I love watching the cars go around at ridiculous speeds, milimetres away from the barriers. It's the best test of a drivers skill IMO.

Agreed. Monaco is the fucking nuts, even if the races are usually just one long snake of cars. Button's lap in his Brawn was amazing to watch.

Also, Mansell is a jump starter :p

I hope that they will not forget to remove ventilators from sidepods, like they managed last year ( + TV remote inside of his cockpit)

Looks like my prediction was right.
Alberto Costa has resigned/been fired as technical director at Ferrari.
Looks like a big promotion for former McLaren employee, Pat Fry.

Ferrari's technical director Aldo Costa has relinquished his position as the team's technical director on the back of a disappointing start to the season, the Maranello squad announced on Tuesday.

Ferrari said Costa, who had been appointed technical director at the end of 2007, will "take on new responsibilities within the company".

The Italian squad also confirmed a new structure for the technical department, with Pat Fry becoming the director of the chassis side.

Production will be in the hands of Corrado Lanzone, while Luca Marmorini continues to be in charge of engine and electronics.

All of them will report directly to team principal Stefano Domenicali.

I'm also hearing about a lot of other staff changes within maranello, perhaps an all new senior management team will be in place

Wasn't he promoted after the shambles in Abu Dhabi?

Unlucky for him.

Massa the next to go!
Aerodynamic department is next....

If they fail at Monaco (let say Fernando DNF, Massa somewhere around 8 place) more heads are gonna roll and more TV sets will fly out of LDM villa. I think that Domenicali is next.

Get rid of the pit-stop crew

I have to say I'm surprised at how behind the Ferrari pit crew is.

The RBR pit crew has to be on steroids or unhealthy amounts of a specific energy drink, it's insane.

Pit crews:
RBR >> Mercedes >>>>>> Ferrari, Mclaren

And for Ferrari - I think that there are greater problems with team management and leadership. And it looks like their aggresive engine mapping from Turkey went MIA before last race.

i'm all for firing Domenacali but if there is not suitable replacement, why bother? Ross Brawn at Mercedes has shown there is no magic pill to fixing problems. A different decision in Abu Dhabi and he would have been set for a few more years. There is no point focusing on the 2012 car without knowing whats wrong with the F150, there need to be serious discussions within the design department

get rid of Massa at the end of the year, he is just embarassing at the moment and i am astounded that Alonso comitted to such a long term contract......

As i said, problems inside Ferrari are not easy to solve. It all began with their mess up with wind tunnel parameters. Car was great on winter testing, fans and media all hyped up.

Five races into season, best result is 3rd place from Turkey. They were optimistic before Barcelona, marvelous job from Fernando on Saturday, but failed in the race. Not just failed, getting lapped by RBR and Mclaren in ~40 laps, with 1 second deficit on softer and 3 second deficit on harder tyre. After great race in Turkey this is something uncommon. Fans and (italian) media demans answers.

It looks like that the easiest solution is to fire technical director, point finger at Pirelli for 'bad' tyres and reshuffle some staff and pray that Monaco will be better and upgrade package for Canada will work. But competition will not stay on the spot.
They will probably try to get 'the best' people in F1 for 2012, but even this does not guarantee success.

Sutil's handy work:

d11esp1806.jpg

Bernie Ecclestone had a clear-the-air chat with Adrian Sutil shortly before the start of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Force India's Sutil is engulfed in a scandal that endangers his Formula One career, with Renault team co-owner Eric Lux threatening to press criminal charges following an alleged clash in a Shanghai club after the Chinese Grand Prix.

Newspaper reports said Ecclestone summoned Sutil in Barcelona because he "wanted to hear from Adrian the truth about the nightclub incident".

Sutil was then photographed shaking 80-year-old Ecclestone's hand.

How does he do it? He's always in the right place. If only he didn't do watermarks ...
