mclaren did very a good set of pit stops during the last race.
In this season they are just too slow. Also, if they worked as fast as RBR guys, Lewis would probably won in Barcelona. But they are getting faster.

Comparing to last year: Hamilton closing in
Posted: Tuesday May 24th 2011, 18:18 GMT
The Red Bull team have done some great work in the first five races of the 2011 championship. The team scored 72 points more compared to last year. Before the last race that was 75 points. Sebastian Vettel is still the driver with the biggest gain. The German scored 58 points more after the first races. Also up is Lewis Hamilton. Before the Barcelona race he 'only' performed 10 points better than last year, but because of his second place finish he now has 28 points more than he had this time last year. He is also up four places after these first five races.

Ferrari and Mercedes GP are on the other side of things. The Italians have scored a massive 41 points less. Despite the good show of Alonso they are worse off after Barcelona. Before that race they were only 25 points behind. Things aren't going great for Mercedes GP either. The team had good results the last few races but are also performing below last year's level: they are down 32 points. Rosberg has scored a full 24 points less in comparison to last year.

López: Kubica won't be able to race this year

Gerard López, head of Renault team owners Genii Capital, is adamant that Robert Kubica will not be able to return to racing in 2011. The Pole is continuing to receive physiotherapy following his near-fatal rallying accident in February.

"We could probably get Robert into a Friday test drive this year, but it's almost certainly not going to be possible to manage a return to racing this season," López explained to Spanish radio station Onda Cero, with the Skoda which Kubica drove in an Italian rally having been impaled by a metal roadside barrier.

"Robert has survived an unbelievable accident and now just recovering from it will be very hard. Nobody yet knows just how well he will recuperate - neither us nor the doctors can predict that at the moment."

Renault now heads to Monte-Carlo, where Kubica picked up the second of three podium finishes for the team last year. In 2011, Vitaly Petrov and Nick Heidfeld have so far managed respective rostrum placings in Australia and Malaysia.

FIA agrees to Monaco tunnel DRS ban

Formula 1 drivers will be banned from using the DRS in the tunnel at this weekend's Monaco Grand Prix after the FIA reacted to drivers' concerns on Monday, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

On the back of continued fears from drivers that it could be too dangerous to use the DRS through the tunnel in practice and qualifying, FIA race director Charlie Whiting wrote to the Grand Prix Drivers' Association members on Monday to tell them he agreed with their stance.

To prevent the possibility of drivers being forced to take risks through the tricky right-hander in the tunnel by trying out DRS for a speed boost, Whiting told drivers that he was stamping out the possibility.

The FIA will lay down a ban on DRS between two points on the Monaco circuit - distance markers 1350m and 2020m - which is the area around the tunnel.

DRS use will be free elsewhere and the overtaking zone will be laid out on the start-finish straight - because the more obvious tunnel area was too dangerous.

Whiting had said last weekend that he did not believe that safety matters relating to Monaco were enough to justify banning DRS totally at Monaco.

However, not all drivers agreed with the decision and had continued to lobby him for a unique DRS ban in the tunnel.

"I would love the people at the top to sit in the car and try to do the tunnel with the DRS open," Rubens Barrichello said in Spain.

"In my opinion, they are waiting for something bad to happen. And when it happens, they will just say, 'oh, next year we will not have it for Monaco.'"

Awesome video, but I'll be buggered if that is not the most pretentious track name I have ever seen.

Supersofts at Monaco.
Paul Hembery: “Monaco is a fantastic race that makes no sense on the one hand as it’s so different from everywhere else, but it’s still the jewel in the crown of the calendar on the other.

We’re very excited to see our PZero Red supersoft tyres making their debut around the twisty streets this weekend, although this type of circuit will obviously be a completely new experience as we’ve only tested on permanent tracks. The supersoft rubber is designed to provide outstanding performance over a short period of time but this comes at the price of durability, so all the teams will have to consider their strategies carefully.

Getting it right will make the difference between winning and losing. For longer runs, the PZero Yellow has already proven itself to be a reliable and popular product so far this year, contributing to extremely close racing while providing the drivers with all the confidence they need to push to the maximum. We said from the start that we wanted to give racing back to the racers, and we’re hoping very much that Monaco will be a classic example of this.”

*Waits for Ferrari tyre complaints*

I'm so excited!

Sucks I'll miss first practice because of an IT exam though.

I do remember the Michelin super soft turning to complete shit in 2005, provided fantastic entertainment. Hopefully the Pirelli becomes undrivable too.

48 laps on softs... yeah. lol

6 stop race it is then!
the super softs could actually be the less popular choice this weekend. pitstop strategy and traffic management is gonna be crucial

6 stops would be too much.

I like the tyres are making people do strategies on the fly and making races eventful, but honestly if you pit more than 5 times it gets really hard to track what's going on. I can just about manage it with 4, which I think is the sweet spot.

Less than 10 laps with a heavy fuelled car on the super softs?
Could we see the teams do Q3 qualifying on regular softs leaving super softs for end of race.

Seeing as Monaco track is so narrow and overtaking difficult, it could work as a strategy.

Also speed difference between both compounds will be much closer than medium/super hard

Free practices will be very interesting

not seeing it happen for the top4 (probably RBR/McL) but for anybody else down the grid it's probably a viable option

It makes the most sense placing it there, that way it wont get screwed up when the guys are going through Rascasse.

But it shouldn't, since it is done on time, not distance right? Seems they should just have it right before the activation point on all tracks to me.

Brakes are on hard test in Monaco, fuel consumption is very low on this track.
Tyre wear will be important.

Does anyone else think that the detection zone is too far from the activation zone?

dunno, if you put the drs detection at corner 18 you could cheat yourself into the detection distance i think by taking corner 18 wide and brake late, you will be screwed for 19 but at least you got drs

Ah of course.

In that case, I guess it stops the drivers from getting really ballsy going into Rascasse just to get the DRS.

While I admit that 5+ pitstops during a race is excessive, I'd rather see Pirelli work on making tires that produced less clag.

I realize that both issues are related to each other, but I'm annoyed that these tires break apart so easily.

And this man knows about bumps on T1 in Monaco.
Or what happens when you try to take it with a certain Welshman near you...

Edit: On topic, Monaco should be interesting. Of course DRS wont really do much other than make Barrichello crash in the tunnel, but it should negate RBR's massive downforce lead, if only for this race.
