I feel like not.
Anyone can host an end of the year award show. Lots of companies send representatives to this one but it’s not like it’s “official” or has to happen. The industry would go on just fine if it stopped, just like when E3 stopped (and E3 was a much bigger deal than this).

In current form, not at all. Presently its prioritized in this order:
-Paid sponsors
-Paid trailers
-Kojima: to kiss his ass and have him promote his shit
-Actors: which are their to promote their shit and most don't having anything to do or understand gaming
-Music from fuck all artist, most who have nothing to do with the game
-Actual awards if time permits

I don't get why some people says it's not important. It's a show to gove awards to hard workers, and we also get some premiere here and there

You can argue about the execution and even the owner, but not the idea

I know a lot of people like to bash it but I find it fun. However, I do not think it is important to the industry.

No. I have never watched the show, nor do I care. I think the only thing the industry cares about is success.

Absolutely not. The panel who vote on GOTY is a joke and there are various more fair GOTY out there.

I only like it for the spectacle and reveals.
I would say it’s important because of the spectacle and reveals.

Granted I don’t exactly know what ‘important’ means here. But the show is unique among GOTY awards because of all the pomp and circumstance surrounding it. I don’t know how to quantify that but it definitely makes it unique. The award itself may not mean more than others (debatable, eyeballs matter) but I do think the overall show matters to the industry.

I do. It’s like a mini-E3, takes some time to celebrate the industry, has cool live music usually inspired by video games, and has several interesting reveals every year.

What’s not to like?
Yeah, ever since E3 died, it has become the platform for announcements of games that are not first party like the Nitendo Direct's or the Sony State of Play's. Its good for teasers as well.

I would agree with this.

Not really since most of the time they don't even select the best games anyway or give games that actually deserves the awards. I guess it's still a somewhat fun news just for those that are curious to see which game won what. But I never take those seriously anyway since whatever game I find the best will still be viewed as the best even if they don't pick them and games I see as shitty will still be viewed as shitty even if they picked them as winners.

I wish there was something else, but it is what it is, the awards themselves I have zero interest in but the game reveals can be pretty good (although it's waaaaay too long usually, 2 hours max instead of the usual 2.5+ hrs, didn't one go on for almost 3.5 hrs? Oh, and cut out the music acts, they aren't needed at all)

It would matter if professional games journalists actually had any integrity and credibility. You’re talking about the same retards who refused to even talk about one of the biggest games of last year (Hogwarts Legacy).

I’ll watch the trailers later. I seriously couldn’t care less what some panel of the useless gaming media thinks.

The type of hype machine and glorified ads, nothing wrong it exists. Not much different compares to other showcases/directs, it was only much longer, have celebrities and musical performances.

It's important because advertising is important. As long as consumer demand and advertising dollars exist, there will be a place for it, or whatever replaces it.

Depends on what you mean by important.
I do think it has become an important ad/marketing event for the industry. With E3 dead, aside from the usual Microsoft presentation in June there is now very little in terms of big CONSISTENT gaming showcases. It's not that the Nintendo and Sony ones aren't important, but we never really know if or when we'll be getting one. So TGA have managed to establish themselves as this big consistent gaming hype event in early to mid December.

As for the awards themselves, no. Not even the event takes them seriously so how can we or the industry at large?

No. The TGA presentation is cringe, but not as cringe as PC Gamer's Stream.
My time is valuable and I want the trailers with less of the filler.

Same goes for Sony state of Play and similar.

Nope, I generally dislike awards shows, but even ignoring that there's just too many things wrong with it for me to consider it meaningful. It pretty much ignores last 2 months of the year (and next year no one's going to remember about those games), many important categories are wrong or missing, some games are ignored on purpose (Hogwarts last year, likely Wukong this year) and obviously the whole thing feels like a celebration of paid ads, not the people who made the games and provided us with entertainment or touched important topics.

Geoff's TGA isn't about the awards. It's about selling airtime for trailers and ads. The awards themselves get pathetically little airtime. If it were to actually put the people who make games ahead of the advertising I think it would be way more valuable. I get that the money to produce the show has to come from somewhere, but he needs to find a better way to handle the awards part so that it doesn't seem like an afterthought.

I feel indifferent about it, still watch the show for the new upcoming games but don’t really care about the actual award show.

Exactly. This is just a big marketing scheme.

I avoid the Dorito Pope’s Advertisement Parade. I just watch the trailers on YouTube later that night and the next day. Like all awards shows, it’s a sham.
