No. It has huge viewer numbers, but it is so much of a vehicle for paid advertisements for things like far east gaas games that it is unenjoyable and irrelevant.

As some one working in the industry my not at all important opinion is that I couldn't give two flying fucks about it.

As far as significant announcements from Companies, absolutely. The closest thing we still have to E3-like Hype. Can't wait for Resident Evil 9 personally, which is most likely being announced at the Game Awards

Anyone saying NO must have forgotten that Control basically bombed until it got like 7 nominations (including GOTY) at the TGAs and people started asking "is that a good game" and its second year sales went through the roof.
I could probably mention many many more games that got exposure specifically cuz they got nominations at the TGAs so people noticed them.

So yeah, Spike Video Game Awards was the biggest award show because consumers actually watched, Spike stopped the VGAs and Geoff has taken up that mantle.

Alot of other awards shows id say are more respected (DICE, GDC...).....but more actual consumers watch the TGAs so that makes them super important..

P.S If you are old enough to remember the VGAs having a red carpet full of celebs and having said celebs host and present awards.....good for you.
I honestly dont know if I miss that era or not, there were so many times a celeb would be presenting a trailer or something and me and my buddies would be like "she has no idea what the fuck shes talking about" but shes a trained performer so she does it with umpfff and shes got great tits so we'd allow it.

TGA is basically a long commercial. It shouldn't be called "awards" when the event is about trailers, game announcements, and celebrity moments. Also, having so many categories that it seems like you just want to get the awards done and rush through them is ridiculous when the awards should be the focus.

I only watch for the trailers and reveals.

Occasionally you get moments like "Fuck the Oscars!" which are also great.

It’s at least important in the minds of the publishers. If they wouldn’t think so, they wouldn’t show their games or pay insane prices for ads.

It's not an award show like the Oscars, Bafta or Golden Globes, it's a 3 Hour commercial that gives out 10 or so awards while leaving seemingly "boring awards" like Best RPG, Best Multiplayer, Best Sports Game ect. out of the spotlight and all they get is a PowerPoint sheet insert to inform us who won those awards inbetween 2 trailers.

Who's paying who? Geoff is the one who wants them to come, not the other way around.
We know fhe prices for ads (or at least the ones to SGF, and there are a lot of them, so publishers are willing to pay them.

And even if Geoff asks, they could just say no.

It’s tough to say. I voted No.

There’s a significant number of games I bet wouldn’t exist if not for the Game Awards and the second degree consequences therein. Those games, however, aren’t relevant to the wider market other than clogging up store space and wasting dev resources.

Then there’s the small advertising economy Keighley has monopolized between TGA and SGF. Again, not a good thing, but it has an impact.

But I do think that the AAA game sector is becoming less and less attached to this shit, and that’s what matters. The incoming lineup of nominees is going to be pitiful, and will not reflect the opinions of gamers, the wider market, or even games journalists who don’t seem satisfied with the current state of the market. It’s not that we haven’t had down years before, but compare this to 2014; at least that year, all of the games were actually new.

The games that are getting ad space there are less and less deserving, and you can tell that most publishers don’t feel the need to show up with anything serious.

No it's just a phoney awards ceremony where devs and purple haired sissy's get to sniff each other's farts until they pass out.

Nearly always the wrong games that get the awards and the obnoxious crowd screaming and yelling from every corner reeks of desperation.

I won't be watching it.

I don't care about it at all and never have. The only show I ever made a point to watch was MS and Sony E3 events because that's where any real surprises happened. Even then, I prefer to just watch the highlights later.

If it helps people in the industry by means of bringing advertising money in, cool I guess.

Every year I watch, it’s gotten progressively more woke, or at least the ads have. So no, it’s not important. I do enjoy announcements though.

No. Like all 'award' shows, it's a four hour advertisement. I cannot imagine the mind rot you would need to suffer from to actually want to watch a bunch of strangers 'winning awards'. Fuck me. Imagine being on your death bed and saying 'I wish I'd spent more time seeing CDPR winning best script'.

It's an ad. And a fucking boring one. And Dorito Pope is such an arse licking little sycophant, I'm amazed that he hasn't yet given Hideo Kojima an actual blowjob on camera yet.

I am a pretty avid gamer and I am only vaguely aware of its existence. So, I would say that’s it nice that it is a thing, but I’m not sure what would change if it disappeared.

I think it's important to devs as their work gets recognized and celebrated.
But to most players, it's just an event for possible cool announcements.

Not really. While it does get the views, it's all for the wrong reasons. Sorry to burst any bubbles, but gaming will never match the glamour of Hollywood.

I feel like Geoff tries very hard to get things rolling. I don’t wish any bad vibes with that side. Bonus points if we see another From Software announcement.

Not really, lets compare them to another award show which is less relevant but does have more influence (The Oscars).

TGA is clearly modeled after it and hopes to replicate it's mixture of commercial and artistic influence, but in this case I don't think it works. In movies playing for the highest box office is usually counter to getting showered with awards (at least since the early 2000s). With a few caveats, this isn't true for gaming. If we exclude mobile games and F2P, the incentives of a well funded game dev (usually the only stuff which is considered) is going to shape their game to get the highest review scores possible, as there's a very undeniable correlation between critical acclaim and sales. This was the case BEFORE TGA and remains the case after. If we look at the "standard" award nominee, they're usually big budget, single player games (can have multiplayer elements as well). Having won a "GOY" award will probably help with tail end sales, but it'll never help with week one sales, where most studios hope to recoup their investments. If you look @ the Oscars, you'll find all the movies nowadays land in the "arthouse" style move, but usually with a solid budget and peppered with big names. What you won't find are Marvel movies and other popcorn flicks that don't excite the NYtimes reviewers, but do sell well and generally get all around positive reviews. I'd argue most nominees for GOY are much closer to a marvel movie production than say a "Parasite" production.

Also perhaps they can copy more of the Oscars and cram just a little less ads in it. I used to watch it live but not anymore -> highlights only is much better.

It's becoming like the Grammy's or Emmy's, the highest bidder gets the award. Then they have to sprinkle in some dumb indie games from lgbtbbq developers with AAA games for awards just so that community doesnt get their feelings hurt.

Listen E3 was a nice time every year for gaming regardless of the cringe. Sadly that died. Game Awards is a nice way to celebrate the cool games that did release this year. Felt like every single release this year had a bitch-fest prior to release.

I'll take a marketing event to see some new trailers and watch performances of my favourite music from games I played this year.

For me, it’s mainly a show to discover new trailers and gaming announcements.
The game award part is linking everything and create a background story to follow instead of just having a bunch of trailers.

Yeah, I'd say it's important. I don't really care about the Game Awards part, but the announcements and big event is worth it for me to keep up with it annually. I've tuned in every year all the way back since it was on TV/associated with Spike, so it's had its ups and downs but it would be a shame if it disappeared.

Companies have shown they clearly care enough to hold back their announcements and they're good at preventing leaks so there's genuine surprise or disappointment

A big No from me. Generally the biggest sellers of the year often get ignored.

Top sellers this year that won't get into GOTY nominations.

COD BLOPS 6 - 30m
FIFA 25 - 20m
Black Myth Wukong - 25m
DBZ Sparking Zero - 10m
Mario Party Jamboree - 15m
Hell Divers 2 - 18m
Palworld - 30m

While these weak sellers will be nominated instead
Metaphor - 1.5m
Astrobot - 2m
FF7 Rebirth - 3m

I hear where you're coming from but a game that sells more copies doesn't necessarily mean it's a higher quality game.
