I'd love a female Gundam lead. My understanding of Japanese culture, however, is that franchise tradition is, well, traditionally harder to break free from than what we see in the West (where it can still be difficult to do so). If I had to wager a guess as to why we've never seen it, it probably boils down to the fact that it's never happened before, ergo, it'll never happen.

But admittedly (and as I've said many times over, heh) my grasp of anime is limited relative to many of my peers on the net. Maybe I'm flat wrong.

Female lead sounds great.

That said I really dont want any of Sunrises Mecha teams doing it.

Their protrayl of lead women have no damn balance what so ever.

Hell the last quality female they had imo was Mai Tokiha.....12 years ago.

I remember some of Geass' women being pretty decent. Or was it just Kallen and CC?

No, I think you're pretty much right.

I know I've read that Loran crossdressing was an attempt for Tomino to get back at Sunrise not allowing him to have a female protagonist in Turn A, but I don't know if this was ever confirmed.

Also the fear that sales will go down as having a female lead will convince folks the toys are intended for girls, though this is one of those situations where it's probably self-fulfilling and strong, gender-equal marketing would probably be financially successful. Cartoon Network pulled Young Justice because it appealed to much to girls, and the fear was they don't buy as many toys---but like I said, self-fulfilling. They don't even attempt to connect with the female audience and just assume they won't buy the toys, when I bet a ton of girls would buy more action figures if you simply had them in commercials playing alongside the boys to show them it's okay to do so.

As a young guy I loved Beanie Babies and Little Pet Shop toys, which were primarily advertised at girls, because my grandma realized a young mind didn't care about stuff like that as long as they were fun to play with. I hope to pass that mindset on to my children regardless of gender, though one has to be careful to not make their children too materialistic and easily suckered in by marketing.

While playing DWG 3 I thought Loran was a woman, they should've just made Loran a woman. Loran was such a trap that Guin kept calling his ass Laura well after the expiration date on that joke.

Turn A actually goes out of its way to show you Loran is indeed a dude as he spends the majority of the first couple episodes running around naked.

Nah, it was just fan-theories. Concept art shows that he was always meant to be male, though originally he had a more traditional protag. look instead of the darker skinned effeminate one we know today.

I played DWG 3 at least 2 years before I watched Turn A Gundam.

For me it was the opposite, I bought DW3 because I was watching Turn A at the time.

I totally understand thinking he was a girl if you hadn't seen the show though. It's just funny that it almost seemed like Sunrise was worried people would think he was a girl if they didn't make it clear so ordered nude scenes.

I bought DWG 3 cause I'm an all around Gundam nut and I had never seen Turn A before so I was wondering who that woman was. There was also Jarrod from X, which I've still never seen, but he just annoyed me in that game.

When building a model sometimes there is a clear line where two pieces come together. You can see it on the right arm of my Ez8 below. It clearly isn't meant to be a panel detail. How do you all deal with this problem? Is it a problem with how I'm putting the pieces together? Can this only be fixed through painting? I currently only intend on doing top coats. It really isn't that big of a deal, but if I could reduce the visibility of these lines, I will.

Those are seamlines.

You can use some plastic cement and glue/fuse the pieces together and then sand it down.

You can try just sanding but it won't work as well. Painting or topcoat can reduce it but it will still be noticeable.

A female lead in Gundam would be interesting but it's a hard sell because of franchise tradition and demographics when it comes to who watches the shows in general. The closest we've gotten is having a female character that's very central to the plot and part of the flow of the story. Diana from Turn A, Tifa from Gundam X, and recently Kudelia from IBO. Aina from 08th MS would be pretty close but she starts as a villain and isn't exactly a protagonist for most of the show, lol.

I fucking hate Aina and Shiro. A couple of fucking cowardly deserters. 08th MS team is so good up until the end when it shits its pants.

Oh and FSS is Five Star Stories. It is sooooo good. There has only been one anime made, but the manga is ridiculous.

Model kit example.

Gundam Zeta destroyed me honestly.

There's that one sad BGM that plays whenever someone dies that I always think about now when something horrible happens to me.

The 1/100 kit comes with both Gusion and Gusion Rebake parts but only one frame to put it on. You can do a mix and match of Gusion and Rebake. It is just more expensive because of the number of extra you get.

I like Rebake Asura extra arms but the waist still bothers me.

We will see this new form soon in g tekketsu

This is so silly, why am I smiling so much lol

I'll probably get a Gusion Rebake. I've yet to get a Barbatos though. Or any IBO/Tekketsu kit.

Went to buy my first SD Gundam today (I made ~6 HG/MG, but never the small ones) and I got this one:
Also, a few pictures if anyone's interested how a Gundam floor in a big Japanese store is like (I think I posted some pictures in the past, not sure).
These photos are from Yamada Denki in Ikebukuro:

WE ARE GUNDAM.

Just thinking about it recently since Combiner Wars are a big thing in Transformers now, but it surprises me how little that concept was used across Gundam. It seemed like we were headed that direction with ZZ then V to some extent but still official examples are few and far between, like Trion 3.

How big is the demand for those old kits? I'm always surprised by how many are on sale.

If they were available at the local store here for a cheap price, I'd pick them up all the time just to experiment and try out new techniques. As it stands kits are relatively expensive and difficult to obtain, so I'm much less likely to experiment for fear of causing irreparable damage to something that I can't just walk to the corner store and pick up.

No idea, I guess it's something for collectors/oldschool gundam fans, because I can't imagine regular customers buying those.

The Combiner Gundams just remind how happy I was Transformers moved away from multiteir combiners.

Sadly no more building for a bit, knife slip amd deep gash in my thump. Gunna need a few days to heal.

Ouch. So what came first? Combiner Transformers? or Power Rangers?

Devastator was mid eighties, but Sentai was before that was it not?

I honestly couldnt tell you as I dont follow Ranger/Sentai after Tommy became the White Ranger and Ive never bothered with Sentai.

That happened to me a couple of weeks ago. It hurt so bad.

Yes, but robots only came in the late seventies, and combiners in the late eighties if I'm nto mistaken.
Hmm it would be close then.

Transformers had Devastator and Ultra Magnus in the 85 and several more over tge next few years.

Granted LeoKing, God Sigma and Getter Robo easily came before either so neither Transformers nor Sentai are the original Combiner.

That said its cool how close it seems to have been between them.

Getter Robo was a cheater though. I mean, it makes no sense how those ships combined!
Lol I cant say you're wrong.

That dmsaid I loved Getter Dragon's design so it just popped into my mind.

God Sigma though combines exactly like Sentai and tge Geshtals.

Oh, I love Getter Robo as well. In fact it might be my favorite suepr robot show and I have the toys to prove it! But despite being of the first if not the first combining robots I feel credit goes to whoever designed something after it that actually made sense.

I mean, combiners are a bit much for Gundam with the exception of the most bonkers of series. Like it works for BF, and would have for G. But even ZZ went a bit too far I think, which is why the definitive ZZ is the FAZZ.

Eh cant quite agree with this.

I love that the ZZ transformes so base ZZ in to the massive G Fortress so og ZZ is my fav, plus ZZ was nothing compared to some stuff that came later like Neo-Zeong.

Hell if we shrink the combination system from Transformers/Sentai we litterally have AGE and its docking mechanic that the limbs use when sent via the AGE Egg.

ZZ is pretty minor all things considered even when sticking to the rel robot shows.

Granted if you find Neo Zeong, DX+G Falcon, AGE and even the Docking from SEED to be spawns of my Mistress Satana and ZZ the absolute cut off then yeah I could see where your coming from.

Wow! that place looks awesome. i don't see any Metal Build section... (i'm sure they're around)

My Zeta impressions so far:

i'm up to episode 13 now... i gotta say, i agree with whoever posted that Seed Destiny is a total rip off Zeta bc as i'm watching Zeta i kept saying to myself: wow, i've seen this in Destiny. and Zeta is so much older. if i would've seen Zeta first, i would've had more distaste for Seed Destiny than i already have now.

anyways, i'm digging Zeta, the shock kill have dropped off a bit.
The art style reminds me of SDF-1 Macross. donno... maybe Kamille looks too much like Max Jenius and Fa looks a bit like Lynn Minmay, (maybe it's the black hair and red outfit) i like the art style.

the plot jumps a bit in places. like why did the AEUG acting captain just leave for the moon once Bright shows up. just felt so random...

one last comment, there's a lot of slapping going on =)

I had been up to episode 30 or so on my Zeta re-watch, but after just finishing the MSG TV BDs and the Z story arc in Battle Universe I really feel like starting over from episode 1 again. I'd like to get through Z again before the ZZ BDs drop later this year.
