yeah, not gunpla but high end figures like hot toys for display collecting. the well made ones always go up in price so it's important to get them during pre-order. (Destiny is sought after) you never know when if ever they will print these again.
I finished building the MG RX-78 Origin today. I have thoughts about that kit (mostly positive). Will probably wait until tomorrow when I can get some photos to really post them, though. As a small teaser, since I love the RX-78 Origin so much and the pilot is very visible in the cockpit, I decided to paint Amuro up.
I forgot how satisfying painting 1/100 pilots was. He's not perfect, but he looks darn good from anywhere but super up close. Could have mixed a slightly lighter blue and brown, but I think what's there works. Super proud of that one.
As the resident WoL super fan, something about those aren't doing it for me. I guess it's partly because I don't super dig the MB Destiny. I get it and I think the changes it makes are conceptually cool, but I actually prefer the original or RG version that has fewer sharp edges.
The wings have a similar 'problem' for me. There's a bit too much going on there. I prefer a more simple beam effect like the MG V2 has gotten. Just personal preference, though. The original MG Destiny EB wings are definitely my favorite on that design. The rainbow sheen they have is perfection.

yeah i think it looks weird too, reason i skipped MB destiny till now. i was watching an interview/promo w/ the creator of MB and he said he was wanted to make destiny have an evil aura (like a demon)
he intentionally designed destiny w/ that pose with the wings up.
to contrast kira's hero strike freedom. forget where the link to that promo interview was.

You could try what this dude on Reddit did on his pilot figure, if you wanted. I personally only ever really bother painting them in 1/100 scale up, though.
I don't think Kira was too bad in Seed, though that change sounds dumb. It wasn't until Destiny when they decided to make him a static character that he became terrible. That being said, I think Kira may still be the worst Gundam protagonist. I would say Shin, but I really don't consider him the protagonist of Seed. I think they intended Athrun to be the main lead of that show.

Does that explain why Athrun got the most character growth? I think Shinn was intended to be Kamille 2.0, but then they fucked that up and just made the protagonists Kira and Athrun again. Even Kamille was never fully upstaged by Amuro or Char in his own show the way Shinn was.

They set Shin up as the protagonist, but he has zero character growth through the whole show. He's a Gundam pilot with zero self-awareness who gets used by the villains through the whole show. Anytime he starts to question whether or not he is fighting for the wrong side he fails to take the step forward and remains a pawn.

Cause Shinn was mentally weak. Even Judau couldn't be convinced to be used by Haman and Haman knew how to manipulate people, especially men. Kamille couldn't be used either. Titans tried once and then he happily climbed into a Gundam and proceeded to laugh sadistically as he tried to step on them.
Saw the new Freedom pic earlier this morning. Mixed feelings overall. I love the tall and lean look - Really fitting for a master grade kit imo. I like the detail on the shield but am not sure I like all the liberties they took on the design. The rifle is godawful. The top is miniature and the barrel is stretched to stupidity.
Edit: The more I think about it, I think I'll come down on the positive side of the shield because it looks cool, anime accuracy be damned. That rifle though... Bandai plz.
Edit2: I hadn't looked closely at the bottom pics before. It looks like Bandai changed the rifle stock, which improves the size issue a little bit. I have no idea what that separate, gray part behind the rifle is though, nor do I have a clue as to what they've done to the plasma cannons. The cannons are super different. It's tough to tell without more pics (and they don't look fully colored in, at least I hope they're not) but I don't like them at all.

I do not like that Barbatos. I love the first few versions of it, but this one just looks boring. I think it is the smooth white chest. It is very lackluster.

The heels and shoulders look really cool. I think it doesn't show the final colors since the knee markings are not there for example. Not sure how much color they can add with what's there but we'll see.
Still, mostly interested in just the HG Grimgerde.

Double Post but Thanks Gundam-GAF for the kit suggestions.
I was only getting the double x but I noticed my store had the wing gundam zero. Also ordered some supplies like masking tape, hobby knife, and matte top spray. Since I have the wing zero I might as well go ahead and pick up the sandrock later this year.
Not sure how to go about panel lining the wings though? any suggestions for the best look on that with markers?

What brand and type of top coat do you all use? I still need to pick up supplies to do the top coat on my GM Custom. Do you typically want a flat or matte finish?

Just use Gundam Marker GM02 (Fine Tip Grey) and fill in the lines like you would anywhere else. Did that for the wings on my RG Wing Zero and it turned out well.
Now that I'm home from work I have to say, I love how sleek that Freedom 2.0 looks.
Of course even if the design was ruined somehow I have no choice but to get it. My very first MG was Freedom. It's like poetry.
Flow ditch the markers and go for a panel wash, it will make your life easier and faster. If you already have paints you can make any single one of your paint colors you can for any panel line wash you want.

Depends on what kind of paint you use or if you don't paint. Flat and Matte is basically the same.
I generally have a bottle of Future as a clear gloss coat and I use Mr. Hobby/Color Flat Coat Base.
You generally want a lot more gloss coat than flat coat anyway since clear gloss coat is much more useful for panel lining, stickers, decals, painting and washing, etc.

At first I was worried about using this over the other suggestions but man was I blown away by the quality that came out of this can. plus it holds a lot. I used 4-5 layers on 3 kits and still have enough to do 2 more.
EDIT:TY guys for the panel suggestions as well
Shun-I swear I will switch to panel wash one day, but not this day lol

you could use the Mr. Hobby can or if you have an airbrush, get a flat coat base and thin it and airbrush it yourself. Mr. Hobby is my preferred one anyway since you don't need that much flat coat and it is finer and thinner than most alternatives. Using an airbrush is always better tho.
A panel wash is basically super thinning down paint to between a water and milk consistency. Slightly thinner than the consistency that you use to paint with an airbrush.
Then you would use a fine tip paint brush, or if you want more accurate like me, a medical syringe, to get the watered down paint and just dip it into the panel lines and details.
Since the paint is thin enough, it will seep through all the cracks by itself and cover a lot more places that you can't reach with a marker. It is cheaper too since you can just reuse paints you already have and use any color you want rather than waste money on keeping buying markers.
After you let it seep into the panel lines, let it dry then get thinner and clean up the mess with a cotton swab.
You do this on an unpainted kit, or if you paint, after a nice gloss coat.
It's basically the same technique as weathering just applied differently.
