Yeah, I think the wood and stone matches unlock doors in your castle that then allow you to purchase upgrades using XP gained.

Yup, although a number of the doors also have upgrades purchased via gold.

Here are the doors:

Top left: Sword/primary weapon upgrades - costs gold
Top right: Passive upgrades (time bonuses on certain matches, increased gold/XP, etc) - costs XP
Middle left: Armor upgrades - costs gold
Middle Center: Shield upgrades - costs gold
Middle right: Wand/magic weapon upgrades - costs gold
Bottom left: Potions (can activate individual potions that have pros and cons, unlock with further ranks)

I've really been enjoying Slash'EM, a free roguelike
http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/slashem/id353352719?mt=8

The controls are quite nice, especially compared with some other nethack style games I tried

You can also turn on graphics rather than using ascii characters

Solitaire Blitz is coming to iOS later this year. Mentioned how much I enjoyed it when people were talking about PopCap a few pages back, and it really is wonderful, but I wonder if it'll translate well to iPhone. It's a game that needs a lot of real estate.

Picked up 1000000 just now. It's pretty fun. I'm still not used to the puzzle controls (sliding whole column/rows) but it's definitely addictive. The metagame outside the quick adventure runs works well.

Just unlocked the blacksmith and spent all my gold upgrading the crappy starter weapon...

Hey guys stupid question time:

if a game is $5 and it drops down to FREE for 24 hours and I get it during that time - after the "free" time passes I still own it? A full featured game that is now listed again for $5? There is nothing in the game that acknowledges I bought it on a sale thus making parts of it inobtainable with a IAP paywall?

Right, it's all yours! Sometimes developers will make a previously premium game into a freemium game though, sometimes it works out alright (Jetpack Joyride, Temple Run).

Haven't played it that much yet but from what I've played, I get the impression that AXL is a really great futuristic hover-racer. Muuuuuch better than anything else on the app store.

Visuals, although simplistic, look much better in motion and framerate is also great.

I'm not sure what I'm more surprised about with 10000000 - its quality or its difficulty.

No kidding.

I always think I have a few spare seconds left to scramble through blocks - wish there were a bit more of a pause before the screen wiped or a more noticeable chance to save it. Also, it's not like the environment's forcing the situation on him - the only thing that puts a time limit on his success is his need to sprint through the dungeons. :p

To add to the previous response: your download history actually makes no distinction between things you downloaded for free or paid for. However this doesn't stop the publisher from, say, delisting the older version of the game from the app store and making a brand new listing to force everyone to pay again if they want to redownload. EA is especially guilty of doing this.

10 million is kicking my ass I cant seem to get the correct shit on screen to make a pair of 3 and by the time I do I am way behind the time limit.

So what else is hot this week? That diablo like game any good?

Yes, Orc: Vengeance is quite good. It's a very polished hack n' slash, and although it has IAPs (in the form of gold currency), they are merely there to powerlevel your character.

Highly recommended for any hack n' slash/ARPG fans.

Great stuff, I love that game and the support has been excellent.
You probably get asked this a lot but do you have any plans for Game Center support?

(I like the new logo better!)

Hey! Great to hear you like the new logo, but I guess you're gonna have to fight with Smiley90 on that one. XD

I think we will add support Game Center achievements eventually. No promises as to when, though, because implementation of Game Center will require an overhaul of game logic for something we don't feel provides a lot of meaningful return to our players, compared to proper campaign DLC at least.

When we get around to the asynchronous multiplayer edition/sequel of Ravenmark, though, I'm sure we'll have Game Center baked in from the get go. :)

Stop shitting on my team. Start shitting on my finger.

He's wrong, end of the discussion. :p :D I can't wait to see multiplayer, but i understand that it'll take a while, it's quite a process/project.

What's this time limit thing about 10000000 ?
I like when a puzzler like that lets me play at my own pace, like the near perfect Dungeon Raid.

I want a futuristic racer for my phone. Tilt seems to work better with floaty things than with grounded, wheely things.

I did buy one a LONG time ago (when I first bought my 3GS, it was the first app I ever had) that a GAFfer made where you fly through gates, but I can't remember what it was and it never seemed to get the full-game features I had the impression were coming :(

Wizorb on a touch screen is going to be great. Definitely grabbing that one.

You get hit every so often while your opponents are alive, but you can match shields to boost defense to help prevent your death. Eventually (or maybe more like 60 seconds later) you meet your match, collect the gold/wood/etc you earned in the dungeon, spend it on upgrades, then try again for the new goals and to get closer to the cumulative 10M points for freedom.

Just checked, and its not universal, and no ipad version. Who releases iphone only games these days?

As I read your post I was literally lifing my iPad up to buy the game and then I put it back down again in one fluid motion. iPad or bust.

Same :(. Looks so good too.

on a different topic, i know there are emulators for iOS, but which are good? i just got an icade, and i'd like to try it out with some classic games, particularly n64 games which i think would work well (1 stick, 6 face buttons + start, Z and R, vs the icade's 1 stick and 8 face buttons). also, what sources do i need?

From the looks of it N64 emulation is still super janky: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzT_FDsQpnk

I use Zsnes on my iPad for playing RPGs though and it works great, perfect emulation. The vpad is a bit shit for action games but apparently it's playable with a wiimote and classic controller. I'm fairly sure it supports icade too, although I don't think I'd like to control snes games with that stick. You need to be jailbroken for all the emulators.

Here's the TA Plays video, which does a much better job of explaining how the different icons work:

Video here!

It's not the regular match-3 time of tile swapping -- you instead shift entire rows, like Chuzzle or Yoshi's Cookie.

It's kind of overwhelming at first, but there's a fair amount of strategy once you understand the basics of how things work. Like, ranged enemies are more vulnerable to physical attacks (sword matches and axe items), but other armored enemies are weaker to magic attacks (orb items and staff matches). If you keep an eye on what's coming up in the top screen, you can try to think ahead for what match-ups will help you out best. And in your downtime, when traveling between battles or chests, it's a good time to clean up the board by matching shields, backpacks (giving you items), wood or stone. It's pretty awesome; the more I play, the more I like it.

Having never played Dungeon Raid (only have iPad, I'm stingy), this game looks awesome. Sold!

No. Dungeon raid is perhaps the best game on the iPhone.

I like Dungeon Raid, but I can never play it because while the core gameplay is amazing, I just can't be bothered to deal with all the crap around it. Every time I put it on I just want to play the game and I have to try and work out what about 2million different things mean.

So I don't really know where to ask this but, is there any way to stop my iPad from logging me out of GAF all the time? I have it set to save username so it shouldn't keep doing that but it does :(

Well, I bought that 1000000000000000000 game everyone's been talking about. I really need to unsubscribe from this thread because I keep buying stuff when I really don't even play on my phone.

Is that 10000 game like Dungeon Raid?

At first, I couldn't get into Dungeon Raid and had no idea why it had so much praise. Even IGN rated it among the best ios games.

I forced myself to play it and got hooked! The visuals fool you at first but the game is addictive. It's real fun.

My favorite dungeon puzzlers:

1. Castlevania Puzzle
2. Puzzle Quest 2
3. Dungeon Raid
4. Sword and Poker 2

Slydris, the latest from Radian Games (Inferno+, Ballistic SE, Fireball SE, Super Crossfire), came out this week for iPad only and has quickly become one of my favorite iOS games. It's a puzzle game similar to Tetris, so it's a bit of a change from the shooters they usually put out, but they're clearly adept at this type of game as well.

It's turn based, with the game waiting for you to pick any block on screen and slide it left or right to a new position. Once you do, more blocks fall in. You need to make lines to clear blocks before the screen fills up. It can be very brutal if you're not playing well, going from a clear playfield to a game over in just a minute or two. But you have all the time you need to consider your moves and playing carefully is the way to win.

I found out a way to 'cheat' in 10000000. If you need some extra time to examine the board more closely, simply double tap the home button to bring up the multitasking bar. The game will freeze, allowing you to study the board without fear of getting pushed out.
