The Last of Us 2 is the best piece of content that I’ve ever consumed (Today is its 5th Anniversary June 19th 2020)

No doubt one of the most disappointing games i've ever played.

They absolutely nailed the visuals, level design, voice acting, animations and gameplay, I don't think anyone can argue that.

But then comes the story, characters and pacing, all three are as bad as can be in a huge videogame. It's hard to believe something so poor can be officially written, the worst "revenge" story of all time.

The title of worst sequel of all time will never be taken from this turd

I agree. For me it's the best game ever made. Never played anything that even came close.

Also the best piece of media for me ever. I've never been as impressed by a single piece of media as this game made me.

Perfect game in every single regard. Beat it 5 times. Gets better each time.

Truly insane that the game with the best combat ever ALSO had the best graphics at the time AND the best story. That never happens. Truly a work of art.

Masterpiece.

The fact that it's also so polarizing is also what makes it fucking timeless. It will be talked about in every single console generation moving forward.

Since this game dropped, the mere mention of Neil Druckmann's name is enough to spark full-blown emotional breakdowns.

Certified masterpiece.

I'm curious. What did you realize that made you quit it?
Ugh, I just couldn't stand Abby. At first, I figured her section was going to be a short one-off, like a brief change of perspective. But the moment I saw the full upgrade tree and crafting system pop up, I knew we were in it for the long haul… and that really killed my momentum

To be fair, I already dislike it when games suddenly shift you into the shoes of a second character, especially one you're not emotionally invested in
It took me a while to realize that Abby's section wasn't just a brief detour

I think I actually stopped playing and uninstalled the game not long after that intense escape sequence, the one where you're cut down from being hanged. That whole section felt like a hard reset, and I just wasn't on board for it at the time

I was feeling the same way when I finally played it on PC, until I had to play as a terrible character for the entire second half

Instantly uninstalled as soon as I realized what they were going for
Bro.. I feel petty because I can't stand the Abby parts. I have this on ps5 and on PC and I have not beaten it on either platform.

For instance, I just started it on PC, and I just got to the part where you escape with Abby and Joel and I keep putting it down after the same few mins. lol.

I wish I knew.

But hey, you might end up liking it. There's actually a lot happening once the second half kicks off, it's visually stunning and packed with detail. It really is a feast for the eyes.

I'd say it's worth at least playing through the first few sections to see how it grabs you.

I'll give it another shot tonight.

Today marks the 5th anniversary of The Last of Us 2 release. When The Last of Us 2 released it totally blew me away in everyway. I had never played anything like it before, the graphics, sound, controls, motion matching animations, attention to detail etc. I have never been more immersed by something in my life. Maybe the story is polarizing, but you can't deny the other aspects, in my opinion the story is awesome.

Before The Last of Us 2 released there was a-lot of controversy surrounding it due to leaks, these leaks created negativity and trolls to form an alliance who would lead to a community of troll hivemind, review bombers and fake game reviews. The contrast between reviews and user reviews are way too stark to see as normal. The review bombings are evidenced by the death threats and childish slander that many of the cast and developers received. These same review bombings would eventually carry over to the TV series. None the less The Last of Us 2 was the most highly awarded game of all time before being surpassed by Elden Ring (a then multiplatform mainstream game) and the Last of Us 2 currently sits at the 2nd most awarded game in video game history.

From the eye rendering to the PBR materials and animation, the Last of Us 2 is still unmatched by most games and is still top 10 best looking games ever created. Details like Ellies idle face emotions or Dina squinting when the flashlight hits her eyes or Abbys nose cartilage reacting to the ground or her muscles flexing realistically when she fires her weapon, the attention to detail is insane.

The ambient sounds, sounds of the guns, firing animations, infected sounds and high quality motion blur add to the immersion. The high quality PBR materials and perfectly baked lighting coupled with high geometric density (especially in cutscenes) make certain parts look pre rendered. The animations that blend and transition perfectly to make the characters move convincingly. The incredible facial animation. Enemy A.I. thats convincing and smart. Controls that feel great in hand. This technical feat was all done on a PS4 in 2020.

Attention to detail is in every. single. nook and cranny of TLOU 2, this piece of content screams elite quality. The Last of Us 2 is a masterpiece regardless if you like the story or not, I have never played anything like it and nothing else comes close. I don't think anything will top TLOU 2 besides maybe TLOU 3.
I like the game a lot, but these awards are bullshit. Great games in years with few elite-tier competition will always get tons of awards by default. If I remember correctly it was competing with stuff like Doom Eternal and Ghost of Tsushima. Which is great games but not the sort of games to get GOTY.

Its far more impressive with something like Baulders Gate III winning so many awards when it competes with titans like Tears of the Kingdom.

The Last of Us 2 would get swamped in most other years.

Its also unfair because awards were not as numerous in the past, so superior games from just a few years earlier cant collect the same amount of awards.

What was so bad about the story?

What was so bad about the story?

The pacing is kinda bad, it's overly long, and I found it's messaging to be muddled. The ending falls flat simply because of how many people Ellie killed. The game tries to convey that she finally made peace with not having the chance to forgive Joel, which leads her to sparing Abby, therefore her journey to healing has begun. But that doesn't undo the 100+ people Ellie killed to get to Abby, including killing a pregnant woman. So the idea that Ellie will eventually find peace with all this is laughable. It's clearly too late for her, but Neil backed away from that. The story would've gone a lot harder if it actually committed to it's message about how destructive revenge is, by having Ellie kill Abby, and also kill Lev to tie up any loose ends. She completes her mission, but she loses everything in the process, and she is no longer the girl we knew from the first game. But instead Neil pussied out and gave us the sterile ending that we got. In fact, the original ending was supposed to have Ellie kill Abby. Neil should've gone with his initial instincts on that.

In my opinion stories like Vinland Saga and Clair Obsur have way more to say about revenge/grief than TLOU2 does. TLOU2 is a pretty straightforward revenge story, that does something rather interesting by having you play as the protagonists killer. So it gets credit for presenting a narrative that challenging. But I think when you get down to it's actual messaging, it's not as good as other stories like it.

For example when Vinland Saga wraps up it's revenge arc, it goes to great lengths afterward to actually show you why pacifism goes so hard, which makes for a much more fulfilling and inspiring story.

I genuinely do not understand people who think this game is woke. Yes it has LGBT characters but is where it ends.

Modern day wokies utterly despise a both sides kind of narrative. They view things as oppressed vs oppressor in a way that is as black and white as the most fanatical social conservative.

In their worldview there is no room for nuance so a story where 99% of people are various shades of Grey goes against everything they believe in.

The pacing is fine, TLOU 2 is long? So what? thats bang for your buck and quality. What was muddled about the messaging? I think the masses want the standard, cliche, story tropes and can't handle when something deviates from the normal and expected. In TLOU 2 it shows things from both Ellies and Abbys perspective and made you feel various emotions as you had to control Abby the person you absolutely hate for killing Joel. It makes you question your anger as you see things from Abbys perspective. In TLOU it makes you question morality. TLOU 2 took the divisive and brave choice of killing off a protagonist that you have grown to love, this shows how visceral the world is in TLOU 2. It all makes you question who the "good and bad guys" are. Killing Abby and Lev would have been cliche and cookie cutter. By the end of TLOU 2, Ellie, Lev and Abby are tired, weak, emotional and the ending was perfect to make you question "Is this worth it? Does any of this make sense? What does killing Ellie, Abby or anyone mean." Many of Abby friends and Ellie friends are gone and none of it was worth it. Ellie is tired and emotional and it shows her growth as a character.

Literally the only memory I have of this game is feeling like I spent 90% of my time running into every desk, counter, and corner mashing triangle to loot junk. It was a terrible experience.

TLOU won against GTA 5 in 2013.

TLOU 2 was so far and away the best game to come out in that timeframe (end of the gen) it would have cleaned up any year

Stories and games can sometimes overstay their welcome if they go on for too long. Your argument might make sense for an open world rpg like Elder Scrolls, but not something that's story driven. A narrative can be hurt if it goes on for too long, and I'm far from the only person who's criticized the length and structure of TLOU2.

What was muddled about the messaging? I think the masses want the standard, cliche, story tropes and can't handle when something deviates from the normal and expected.

The fact the Clair Obscur is widely praised and beloved, despite presenting multiple narrative challenges to the player, completely proves you wrong on this. That game arguably does things far more shocking than TLOU2.

In TLOU 2 it shows things from both Ellies and Abbys perspective and made you feel various emotions as you had to control Abby the person you absolutely hate for killing Joel. It makes you question your anger as you see things from Abbys perspective. In TLOU it makes you question morality. Killing Abby and Lev would not have been cliche and cookie cutter actually. Exactly what is cliche about seeing the protagonist fall completely to the dark side and lose everything? It would've been ballsy, and fit more with the game's themes. The people who grew to like Abby and Lev would've been disgusted by Ellie, and the people who wanted to kill Abby would've fallen into the same mindset that Ellie did, and perhaps upon reflection the player would eventually understand that.

I loved it when I played it, but for some reason, I just don't want to ever play it or maybe play with this cast ever again.

Like all TLOU threads, this started on a positive note. It's all downhill from here. Brace yourselves!

It's why I stopped arguing about the game in these threads. Folks who hate it, let them. They are entitled to their opinion just as much as I am. Fact of the matter is that this is one of the most divisive games ever. Nothing is really to be gained in arguing in something so incredibly subjective like this.

Definitely, TLOU 2 fanboys would have a tight competition with Zelda BOTW crowd about which are more annoying.

Don't get me wrong, the game is great overall, but considering this a trascending experience... lmao. Any side character in the TWD series has a better dramatic arc, it's like comparing adults writing to kids'.

And yes, the Abby shock scene is a terrible copy of Negan's introduction. Wake me up the day Neil Druckmann makes something original.

The Walking Dead? Like the TV show? The way this post was going, I thought you were going to say it pales in comparison to a Cormac McCarthy novel or something. But The Walking Dead?? That's a network television soap opera with zombies. TWD at its absolute best (season 1) was a B grade show that was fun to binge on a weekend. It declined very quickly afterwords as they ran out of hands to play and repeatedly wrote themselves into corners.

Part II easily clears it in terms of writing. A lot of games do actually.

Did you replay the Abby sex scene?
Is that your favorite part?

But honestly they could have replaced that stuff with something more interest. But sex sells. Everyone can relate because they want it and know about it. Why do you think it is in movies and music? Because it's super awesome?

LoU1: meh gameplay, great narrative
LoU2: great gameplay, meh narrative

Wonder which way Part III will swing.

Also, team Abby. It made sense to kill off Joel, but what they did to Ellie was even worse. But at least they didn't go as low as TV Ellie.

ND are ahead of their time when it comes to combat. We are finally starting so see some stuff coming up that can compare. ILL and that Netease game Blood Message. Maybe the new Onimusha. No other game holds a candle to TLOU2 so far that has released.

Only Spider-man 2 surpasses it in pure awfulness. Intergalactic is going to be pure woke druckmann trash. Naughty Dog and Insomniac have become the embodiment of everything wrong with Sony's single player games this gen. Not sure if Sucker Punch is gonna join them with Ghost of Yotei or not.
