The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

What do you guys think of the main character, Joel? (And Ellie)

Rememberable? How do you like him compared to Nathan Drake?

I really like Joel. Great to have an older character who seems like an average dude, with an awesome beard. His old-man manliness with his wrinkles, concerned expression, father role, and wicked beard make me enjoy playing him...but this game's focus is so much on the genre, enemies, and Ellie. Seems like not many people are talking about the main character. I get the impression from the trailers that Joel's history plays a big part into the story.

I like the "big guy"... Troy Baker plays him extremely well. Not your average protagonist. It's an interesting character.

*The graphics are bad! Wish it were on PS4.

So I have this preordered, but my backlog is huge and I'm just not sure.

This is going to be a long, grim slog of a ride filled with danger, blood, and jangled nerves, right?

Not sure I can do that right now.

What are people's impressions? I've scanned the thread but found scarce few detailed opinions.

I appreciated the demo for its quality, but it also reminded me why I've always hated survival horror games, so I will be passing on this one. Its not a genre for me.

Hrm.

Phenomenal sound design and I am surprised to see how the game doesn't play like Uncharted at all. Many sites kept saying it plays a lot like uncharted, but it just doesn't imo.
The character Joel's third person camera is zoomed in a little bit to give it that classic survival feel, bullet physics feel different, Joel himself moves very different when compared to how Drake moved in the Uncharted franchise. Does anyone know where I could get the survival edition? Gamestop and Amazon doesn't seem to be taking any pre-orders.

Is it that hard on hard?

I died about 15 times. Those clickers are very dynamic, in the last area only 1 of them is blind, while the other 4 are only partially mutated. The partially mutated clickers can see you if you get too close from the sides.

I have played all the modern stealth games, but that was really hard IMO. The game isn't a walk in the park like MGS4 or that shitty Splinter Cell game.

Wow. I can't wait for this game to come out!

Sounds good to me, definitely playing it on Hard mode.

It's also hilarious watching different people playing through the last section, you can feel the panic from them haha

oh yea I forgot to mention one thing, if you alert them they all gang up on you and the chances of survival from there are very low. You can break free and run like hell, but you will need to find a brick or a bottle to throw them off really quickly after escaping.

ND has said this is not a survival horror game.

I didn't die at all on hard but I played through extremely slowly. It'll probably get rough when the game throws more at you.

It will be a nice change of pace to fight enemies who aren't 100% aggro.

It will feel much different. The infected patrol/rush and that's all there is to them. They don't coordinate or use weapons/cover/sneaky flank attacks. The humans should help the game not feel too samey, like you often get in stealth or survival horror games.

My brother told me about that. (I let him play the demo to give me some non spoiler impressions since I'm on a blackout.) He also said a bottle works better than the brick? Is that true or do they both work the same?

Rented GoW: Ascension and played the demo a couple of times.

I loved it. I like how it balances exploration and combat, and how you can find some collectibles.
I managed to survive the final fight meleeing. I still don't understand how i was able to do that.
Second playthrough i managed to stealth kill every runner on the last phase. And that's what i liked the most. I have the game preordered since day 1, and this demo will surely calm down my hype.
And i also have GoW: Ascension to play :)

ND has said this is not a survival horror game.

Well I won't argue with them, but my own personal definition of survival horror is when shit jumps out of you from nowhere, lots of darkness for ambient reasons, and a general feeling of spookiness and heightened sense of expecting something to jump out at you. Quite a bit of that in the demo I played.

Hey, did they get rid of the 'wall touching' thing that Drake did in Uncharted 3? I found that annoying to watch.

It's annoying when it's done out of context, if not it's great.

The solution should NOT be taking it out, it should be making it more context specific.

They still have it and it's a lot better. Same with melee attacks using nearby scenery.

Finally got my hands on it. Not much to go by but I enjoyed the demo. Hard to tell regarding the visuals since most of it was dark due to the night time setting.

I enjoyed the elements it offers and the combat felt great. I did screw up with the last Clicker which alerted 2 Runners that charge me but managed to beat them down with a pole.

Would anyone like me to upload a MP4 video so they can play it directly on their PS3?

Have Naughty Dog said anything about human enemies running away from you and hiding, especially if you've taken others out and left them isolated? Also, anything about being able to sneak past enemy encounters?

For the former yes, they've said that enemies will run away if you have a gun, or the last surviving one will too. They've even shown it occur too. Look for the second playthrough of the E3 human level. In the end, Joel ends up searching for the last enemy because the chickenshit keeps running away.

For the latter, some areas can be bypassed, other may not due to story reasons.

Edit: it's the pax prime 2012 playthrough of the same E3 level, but played differently to show the wide ranging ai behaviors.

Cheers. I'm gonna love this game so hard

Yes, you can see that happen in the extended E3 demo. The person demoing it ends up chasing after the guy and killing him. But there are a several factors in how enemies will react to you. Another one is the type of weapon that you have. They'll react differently depending on whether or not you're carrying a gun or a melee weapon.

Also, anything about being able to sneak past enemy encounters?

They've said that there are some sections where an encounter is unavoidable but there are others where you can sneak past all of the enemies in the area (the E3 demo was an example of this).

Yes, human AI is based on balance of power. What you're holding (or better, what they think you're holding) vs what they're holding. How many of them vs your strength. They will play hide and seek depending on the circumstances. This has been said, and demonstrated.

You can sneak by everyone sometimes. This isn't a stealth-first game. Sometimes you have to fight. Sometimes you don't.

Look up some interviews, they've talked about these topics extensively. And explained it much better than I can.

Naughty Dog, making high end PC gaming look obsolete since 1989.

God damn, games like this makes it seem this gen had a few more years left of juice before the next gen should have arrived.

To be fair, the gif hides a lot of the faults in that scene.

I've seen that area in direct feed and you notice a lot more of the low resolution textures.

Still beautiful though.

I don't hate them, I can't handle horror games well let alone ones that make you feel powerless and secluded but I'm willing to try and complete this game because the story and quality are definitely worth it.

Yeah well to be fair the gif is very small and doesn't show many of jaggies and textures, the demo everyone's playing now is not a good indicator either but there may be places where ND was able to focus more resources on making the game look pretty instead of the rain more believable.
