The Last of Us Demo (GoW:A Exclusive) Discussion Thread

Man reading this thread is painful, hopefully they make a PS4 port someday. The game sounds perfect... how often do you see legit survival games with limited resources and intense encounters with just 1-2 enemiess with big budgets made from one of the best devs in the industry. I can't even think of one. The attention to detail is somethin' else. Quite a swan song for this gen.

I Am Alive would've been that before its budget was slashed to a downloadable game.

Hopefully this game proves a huge success for Naughty Dog, so that more devs work towards making the enemies smarter (not the enemies in this demo, but the human AI) and tougher to deal with instead of just throwing bigger and bigger numbers of enemies at the player.

Luckily it’s not always dark.

wow.

If you said that was playing on a PS4 I would probably believe you.

We're getting the best survival horror since RE4 (the Last of Us) and a brand-new survival horror game directed by Shinji Mikami, the director of RE4 (the Evil Within) within like six months of eachother, right? It's like the universe is apologizing to survival horror fans for the last five years. Truly a great time to be alive and have expendable income.

What!

I played the demo to many times last night. Looks like I will be playing again this morning!

Its the first one. After Tess distracts it the first time, grab a bottle and lure it close to you while you hide behind one of those low shelves. When its back is turned, grab a brick, run up and melee the shit out of it. The third whack takes its face clean off. I mustve restarted that section half a dozen times last night because it was so much fun.

Satisfaction OUT THE ASS.

I love how item placement and actual item specificity is completely different in Hard than it is in Normal. Has anyone managed to put together an upgraded spiked 2x4 or pipe? I can find enough binding, but not enough sharp objects.

on a small gif anything looks amazing, the game does look great but is very jagged and to an extent that does bother me a little, i would have prefer ND to keep using the AA that was implemented on uncharted 2 but this game seems to be using the same as U3, i rather scale back a little on some details and get rid of the jaggies

@the dude mulling around in the demo files: anything suggesting that the cutscene at the beginning of the demo was pre-rendered? I know there's often a big fidelity gap between real-time cutscenes and gameplay, but I've never seen a gap THIS big. It doesn't really matter in a practical sense (the main issue with pre-rendered cutscenes is that they hurt ""immersion"" when the cutscenes look like they take place in a whole different world than the gameplay (see: Final Fantasy X) but as long as you keep them in the same ballpark (see: Metal Gear Rising) it doesn't matter) and I know a lot of games have to pre-render a few cutscenes anyways (like the volta river scene in MGS4) but in this case it would almost feel deceitful because of how it was assumed that all the footage we've seen thus-far was being rendered on a PS3 or equivalent.

Unfortunately have Naughty Dog's cutscenes on the PS3 always been pre-rendered. They do it in the game's engine so it usually isn't very noticeable.

btw. little surprised that there isn't some account sharing going on, Gaf has usually been my best source for exclusive demos.

Shit read that the game has a grain filter in the last page. Can somebody confirm this? Hate the dame thing.
i mentioned this on page 26 but no one pay attention to it, in some scenes it makes the game look like sub HD, i fucking hate those filters, it makes the IQ to soft

So can anyone confirm that the contrast quality is poor when indoors, especially in the dark rooms? I'm pretty sure it wasn't my TV (I have a plasma w/ decent darks), it was pretty bad. Like the darks were 70% grey.

I thoguht it was weird too, I also have a plasma.

Hehe, if you guys liked the encounter in the demo then you're in for a real treat in the next section. Way more intense.

The PAX demo was glorious I was kinda bummed that this wasn't just an updated build.

Game's only 2 weeks away though so no worries.

First thanks to WelfareBurger for the hook up, I've got an open slot on a dummy account. First to quote me gets it.

As for the demo: I can't wait to play the full game now, the attention to detail is amazing. The delay between input and having the flashlight point where you're pointing is a great device for tension. Every corner you turn is a surprise as you wait for that split second for light to catch up. Controls feel great and everything plays very smoothly. I'm really excited about facing off against some human AI to really get a feel for things.

2 weeks!

oh beaten...damn

Managed to upgrade the 2x4 to a 2x4 with a shiv in it. :D There is only just enough loot in the demo to craft it. I guess it does more damage% or whatever. Can't wait to see what else you can craft in the full game.

Yeah, it's hard to resist using a shiv to open a door to see what's behind it but next time you encounter a clicker you might be in trouble.
I love when a game does this.
It's like choosing between using a bandage to create a medkit or a molotov cocktail, having to manage limited resources like that definitely takes the overall experience to another level. It's not just about making every bullet count, it's so much more than that.

This game is exactly what I've been wanting someone to make since this gen started, the gameplay, the setting, everything. The fact that it's ND doing it makes it even better.

played the demo last night, was absolutely floored by the visuals in this game. didn't think it would top uc3 but it did. albeit short, it was a very tense sample of what to expect from the full game. got my blood flowing that's for sure. also btw, MY FIRST POST BABY HELL YEA!

YAY my internet is back!

When I get home from work, I'll make a dummy account. Can someone who is able and willing to get me the demo, later today, PM me? :D Many thank yous.

Thanks man! As soon as I get home!

I just wish this game wasn't coming out on a friday, as shipping is usually next day from futureshop, meaning I'll have to wait till monday to play.

If this happens to me I'm buying an extra copy and returning the FS one when it arrives. No way I'm waiting a full weekend extra to play this.

This is not even close to next gen. Maybe some of the animation will hold up to next gen games, probably for some time to come, but this is a very good current gen game.

If this game was on next gen, then things like the buildings and landscape in the distance would be blowing your mind (as in KZ:SF) but here, it's like... okay, pretty cool but yeah.

It's pretty astounding for current gen, though, imo... especially when you take all the elements together. They have a limited resource budget, and they are spending it masterfully. AI costs. As you can see in Dark Souls Blighttown where AI path-finding brought that section of the game to its knees. Animation costs. As you can see in ME3 where Shepard can no longer holster a weapon due to lack of memory. Joel's amazing flashlight costs. Trish and Ellie's animated hair, costs. Look at the hit games take that try to do hair... Tomb Raider cut many people's fps in half. Now, TLoU isn't doing that kind of simulation, but it's still doing something - some compromise that will get decent results without crippling anything else. When you consider all the factors (many more than I have mentioned) and the balancing act ND is doing to maintain a consistent tone/feel... and btw... rock solid framerate, its pretty damn impressive. Even if you don't necessarily like the game, would be difficult to deny it's impressive.

I would like to tone expectations here a little. Some of the water spray effects and locations in the demo definitely look like they're from current gen.

Yeah gifs will do that. But I was impressed by UC3's water in one of the jungle levels where Drake and Sully were heading to some old abandoned building. The water there was so good.

Wow this has to be the most difficult game Naughty Dog has made so far.

I died like 15 times in that last area.

*Its not easy to fool the zombie AI, you have to time the bottle and the brick throws
*The AI will still change direction, so you have to approach them quickly to take them out
*The graphics are bad! Wish it were on PS4.
*Low ammo count, difficult to AIM (you have to take a drug ala MGS2 to stabilize your hand)
*This is NOT an Uncharted clone, it has noting in common with Uncharted.

I beat the demo after 15 tries (damn that last area) on hard with most of the stuff disabled. I think I will play the full game on Normal. I don't recommend hard difficulty for n00b gamers.

As far as my tastes are concerned, I value a strong cohesive story and characters over gameplay. But only by a slim margin, because gameplay has to be the central focus for any developer. This is why I loved Uncharted series and I'm disappointed at ND for dropping the ball during the last 1/3rd of the game. The story turned into complete nonsense, despite having the strongest plot of all the 3 games. Anyways, I'm looking forward to the world of TLoU more than anything else and the demo really made me look forward to it more. Joel really looks like the grizzled vet of the TLoU world and knows where to draw lines, but how far is he willing to go in this particular mission. I love the premise, and I want to hug the person at ND that came up with the idea. Also I am so happy that there's a twist on the typical zombie world, and it has more to do with a fatal fungal disease rather than braindead zombies out for brains. Makes it highly more believable if you ask me.

I appreciated the demo for its quality, but it also reminded me why I've always hated survival horror games, so I will be passing on this one. Its not a genre for me.

Don't want to browse 34 pages but I'm wondering...did anyone make a seperate GAF only demo account? ;D

The thing is now things can only be shared between two consoles from one account. So there isn't one account everyone is sharing. Basically gotta be lucky and find someone who is offering.

I don't think I'm gonna have such luck so I'll probably have to rent GoW:A to try it.

I'm huge on graphics but I'm surprised by some of the hate this game is getting graphically. I guess you can't please them all. Also, I'm not a horror genre fan but in Naughty Dog I trust :)
