The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC |OT| More Olivier Than Ever

Just finished chapter 5 with 45 hours lmao I have been playing more often recently though thankfully. But damn this game is long. Am I halfway through at least?

Yeah, pretty much around half way, although it could be more or less depending on your play style (one remaining chapter has a fairly short amount of story but a massive amount of side content).

My in-game completion time was 114 hours. Steam was about 130 (I died on quite a few bosses). Honestly don't know how I spent so long on it but my FC steam time (even though I'd already beat it on PSP a few years earlier) was 80 hours.

One I get lost in the world I just like to take my time and see everything.

The game could use a few options to shorten battle animations (namely, spells). The battle system is good, but is rather slow (some encounters can take a while). Hum, I ought to play Grandia again and make a few comparisons.
Anyhow, reached chapter 8.

Just finished Chapter 7. For some reason the dungeons in this chapter were really taxing my PC, on a least three occasions I suffered a strange crash: either the display cut out (and could not be restored without a hard boot) or the power simply died. I decided to take the opportunity to air out my system and reapply thermal paste in the off-chance heat build-up was an issue. Wasn't really needed but it made me feel better. Got through the rest okay, though I could hear (then and now) the fan working harder whenever I was inside the dungeons.

For the first time since release, SC broke 10k on Steamspy. Yay!

Well, this doesn't actually mean anything, since the number is still firmly in the sales region where Steamspy is about as reliable as rolling a dice, but it's still nice to see in an unreliable, meaningless sort of way. I guess.

I dont understand where this game fits or what I need to buy to enjoy it. I want it for my Vita but if I buy it on PSN is it only part of the story so far?

Also, i see a JP physical release for sale. Does that have English subs at all?

This is the second game in the series. The first was The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky. This is a direct story sequel beginning immediately after the cliffhanger from the end of the first game, so you'd want to play that first.

And no, the Japanese version has no English subs at all.

Ok, so theres:
Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky
And
Legend of Heroes Trails in the Sky SC
and the 2nd one isnt a sort of re-release of the first?

So go on PSN and I should see both listed seperately?

Yeah, they'll be listed separately. Note that SC will be listed as a bundle, but that's just because the game was on 2 UMDs originally in Japan, so it includes two different files. It doesn't include the first game.

The SC stands for Second Chapter, which I don't think XSEED has done enough of a job communicating recently, which has lead to this confusion.

Y'know, I think you're onto something there. Maybe tacking a 2 onto the title would have helped.

IN RELATED NEWS, I STILL LOVE THIS GAME AND EVERYONE AT XSEED FOR LOCALIZING IT

SC stands for "Second Chapter". It's not a rerelease, but a direct sequel that continues the story right from where the first game (also referred to as FC for "First Chapter") ended.

Writing it out as "Second Chapter" in the store listings would help a lot, I think.
Yeah, it'd probably do a ton. Even more if the first got "First Chapter" added to it, but perhaps that's going overboard. Still, not sure how many confused people I've seen as to what SC actually is.

Ok, thanks everyone! I think I'll be picking these up. Somebody on twitter was saying its the best jrpg in years, so I think I gotta move on that. :)

If you write out "The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky Second Chapter" most stores likely wouldn't be able to display the whole name anyway (before clicking on it). Whether you use SC or Second Chapter, the fact that it's a sequel fails to catch the eye.

I almost jumped when I heard that guitar strum during the first chapter, wasn't expecting him for a while! Especially not on a boat haha.

Yeah, everything about the marketing for these games has been pretty disappointing. For a set of games they've spent so much time on -- games that should appeal to anyone who loved RPGs on the SNES/PS1 -- I expected at least some basic PR. So many people have reached out to me after the article I published the other day saying they've just started FC and absolutely love it, can't believe they didn't know about it before, etc. Some people weren't even sure how to find it on PSN.

It's a bummer because I'd love to see XSEED be able to justify bringing over all the other Kiseki games, but it feels like TITS hasn't even come close to reaching the audience it should be able to reach.

They basically said they rely on word of mouth. Word of mouth is really powerful, but you have to have a base to start from. People need to know about the game to play it and spread word of mouth.

But yeah, the games themselves definitely have what it takes to be successful, it's just a matter of getting them there.

Yeah, for the trails games it's always been pretty bad when it comes to getting the word out. I mean, even sites that specialize in RPGs barely mention it, and that's a shame. Hell the week it came out, it didn't even get a mention on Axe of the Blood God, and you'd think a US Gamer podcast devoted to RPGs would talk about a US release of one of the most popular RPG series in Japan, but nope. I think getting out early review copies would help as well. These games take a LONG time to beat, and most places aren't going to post a review 2 weeks after the fact, assuming they care enough to do one in the first place.

They could also probably leverage Youtube personalities as well, but what are you gonna do?

Steam just dropped another patch, seems to have fixed the controller issue from earlier.

Starting Chapter 8, torn on
which way to go first, Ruan or Rolent? Does it make a difference?
I'm currently just running around the first area and checking up on everyone for now and completing quests. Was surprised to find
new monsters up on Amberl Tower's roof, the accessory they drop is pretty good. I assume the other towers will be the same?

But I did do an interview for it on Axe of the Blood God later on down the line! I also talk/post about it quite often. I'm not exactly company proper anymore, but I'm happy to bully more people into talking about it if you have any 'personalities' to suggest.

What an awesome game, one of the best I've played this year. If anything, I did have a couple of minor complaints about the final chapter:
The constant running back and forth to the ship was a bit boring due to the 'tram whizzing along' cut scene and the lifts required to the stations- it felt like unecessary padding, but only a few minutes worth.

The battles with the enforcers- watching the enemy escape when you've beaten them again and again was a bit annoying. Some of them could have died just for a bit of variety, rather than running away because they can't be bothered to stick around any more. It's such an annoying thing when enemies get trounced, and then your characters, despite having an array of ranged abilities, watch them monologue and then flee, or instantly forgive their freely-chosen murderous ways. The lack of wanting to let many of the supporting cast of enemies get some kind of comeuppance (or at least be arrested/KO'd) despite them throwing their lot in with a cult that is happy to watch people die just smacks of 'our enemies are too cool for your victory to mean anything!' I wonder if the actions of the enemy foot troops will be as freely forgiven and forgotten as their leaders?

Having said that, anything from murder to treachery or attempting to overthrow the ruling power to firing up ancient weapons of mass destruction all seem to be crimes of very minor consequence in Liberl as long as you have a very personal, unresolved reason to do it. :D

Did you fight
the enforcers with characters related to them? You than get special scenes.

I tried to: but was there a
clue given as to which one I should bring next? I kept guessing wrong, which was frustrating after the first two times, and I wasn't going to step out onto the platform, see who it was, reload a save, then go all the way back to the ship to bring a specific party member for the fight every single time, that kind of works against the urgency of it being a race against time at that point- in my mind Estelle and co wold have pressed on regardless. It would have been cool to have the option to change party just outside, as obviously those characters are meant to round off the arcs of your party members but I was just bored of heading back to the ship. I don't really see why my party let Walter escape just because Zane wasn't there- I would have happily shot down his little escape drone if given the choice. It reminds me of Tales of Hearts where it happened time and again. Just because the person they have some beef with didn't show, somehow means we have to let multiple dangerous criminals escape because they haven't had closure on their own personal issues! I had Kloe with me- what about her personal beef as the crown princess with those idiots for attacking her city, killing her men, trying to kidnap her, backing the previous rebellion, throwing the country into chaos, etc etc! Their personal issues just seem so small in comparison :)

Well if you
had seen Walter and Zane scene there's no way it could have played out without him :p. You fought the enforcers from first you met to last.

Ah, of course, thanks.

I'm just picking holes here, honestly I loved the whole game, but the other thing I thought about the final boss (heavy spoiler, obv.)
The whole 'evil genius fuses with ancient weapon to become techno-organic angelic megamonster' was a well-trod path even when SC was released. I kinda expected something a bit more original from TitS for the final battle.

Kevin's last scene made up for it though, and perhaps added the pragmatic approach to extreme villainy I thought was missing earlier.

Also, I would have appreciated knowing that once approaching
Grancel after delivering the final phone, I was locked into the final chapter- I never got a chance to explore Grancel and talk to everyone in chapter 8, I left it 'till last as 'the queen wants to see you, it's not urgent' doesn't sound like 'make sure you go shopping in the capital before fixing stuff'! That was obviously a mistake, but it would have been nice to have a prompt at the last guildhouse you fix like 'are you ready to go and see the queen? Y/N' before locking the player into the endgame without warning. I even thought I might get a chance to wander around after saving the royals, but nope. Ah well.

Still, all of these are minor points that I could have avoided with a guide, but I just prefer playing through without one first time around. It's easily one of the best games I've played in ages, and in particular I enjoyed seeing Agate, Olivier and Kloe develop over time.
Mueller's scrap with Joshua
was a nice touch too- what I like about Trails is that senior military/intelligence officers like Cid, Julia and Mueller, plus all of the other bracers and even the journalists and engineers aren't just helpless NPCs, they are shown to be extremely competent at what they do for a living. It really helps with the worldbuilding, I like it when the player party aren't the only effective people on the entire continent- sometimes rpgs leave me wondering what their society would do without adventurers ready to solve everything from global war down to missing cats (although that seems to be the official Bracer job description) :D

Like I said a couple of weeks ago, the early scenes of the bracers training under Kurt was a really good way of explaining how such a central organisation to the games works, I love seeing background stuff like that in games.

All in all, and minor quibbles aside, fantastic stuff. Can't wait for Cold Steel.

It doesn't matter in particular, going to Ruan first means you can take advantage of the casino to get some really powerful gear which'll help for the later regions since you'll be limited on who can use arts. Grancel has a new shop open where you can buy lots of sepith of any color you need for maxing out orbament slots so the extra cash from doing Ruan's and Zeiss's missions is nice. Just be warned once you fix the final phone going to grancel will lock you into the beginning of the finale

about chapter 8 quest:
is there anything at jenis royal academy? first time i went there it was locked. guild said i should check there again but i didn't want to go back .

oh shit are there a lot of hidden quests in Ch8?

I found hidden bosses at each of the Quadracyclic[?] towers and in the Kaldia Tunnel (and scored some awesome accessories).

They aren't really hidden- if the guild receptionist mentions checking in on somewhere, check it out.

I found these
three: Jenis Academy, the mine North of Rolent, and the Hot Springs.

I mentioned "rule of 4" before that it was "like every other game in the genre" and was uncharacteristicly both weak and stuck out like a sore thumb, same as with the too-long ending sequence (which if was condenced would show Weismann's leadership of their missions there shattering, painting his acts with extra desperation. Hell, even most of Ch. 7 could have been completely exised from the game.

Saw that last night! I've had a busy couple of weeks, so I was behind. My mistake on that one! Gonna listen to the interview today. As far as the rest, fan communication I don't think has ever been a problem for you all. In fact it's generally really good. I think where it is rougher is getting the word out to the greater gaming/rpg world.

Well, I'm afraid I'm stuck at the B+ Bracer rank, since I missed a few points in chapter 5 (in which I didn't get the bonus points - seriously, how are we supposed to guess we need to talk to a completly random NPC instead of completing the quest right away?!), and didn't get the chance to do
Grancel monsters
in chapter 8. And, well, I reached the Finale chapter now.

I like the game, but getting all the points is a big Guide Dang It moment. It is infuriating, really.

And I'd rather not talk about the very long fetch quest of chapter 8 either
(Elmo Spring hidden quest)
... That was a complete waste of time.

Will I be locked out of special scenes because of that? I know it was the case for the final boss in FC (no spoilers, a Yes/No will suffice please).

You can't actually have full BP by the time you fight FC's final boss, can you?

Anyway, no, there aren't any extra scenes.

In FC, you need to reach a BP threshold to be able to witness a special scene (you don't need to have full BP, no).
Anyhow, thank you very much for your answer.

Finally got to chapter 9. 61 hours on the game clock, 68 hours on the steam clock. Not sure why there's such a big difference for SC, but for FC it was pretty much the same. The story stuff at the end of ch8 was pretty great. I didn't manage to get to A-rank Bracer by the end though. Too bad! :(
