The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Sequel delayed to Spring 2023

This is the first time ive seen this take, but it makes a lot of sense. I always thought Switch was more powerful despite the difference in tflops because it was on a new generation of GPU.

But I have always wondered why the game was downgraded from the initial reveal despite it releasing on new hardware that was supposedly more powerful.

The original Wii U Zelda demo looked stunning too. It was realtime and you could move the camera around. I get that it was an indoors demo compared to the open world BOTW but the difference is generational.

Lol at those gifs. We won't see a Zelda game like that until Switch 6.

Expected. Glad Nintendo came out this early to announce the delay and didn't drag it out.

But as others have said, only Starfield possibly stands in the way of Elden Ring winning GOTY. No way Starfield gets delayed, right?

Lol who did not see this coming, most likely a fall 23 game, really hope they added some real dungeons this time, dont know how nintendo gets away with releasing so few games, i guess as they make so much profit on hardware, they have no need to.
What do you mean few games, this year already has Pokemon legends, Kirby, rune factory 5 and triangle strategy.

Nintendo saw Elden Ring and got scared that their LoZ game cannot compete for GOTY.

Soulsbourne games are generally better than Zelda games mechanically anyways. The wide variety of weapons, combinations, arts, builds, etc, while Link has just a basic set.

The amount of expectations for this Zelda game will be high. At this point we should have the option to play as Zelda. I can already play as both a female and male character in Elden Ring.

Zelda team is going to copy souls games so hard with many hidden dungeons, bosses, and optional areas hidden behind very small entrances like ledges, hidden walls, and oddly specific requirements that takes the community of a subreddit to figure out.

Well GOTY is easy for this one, it goes to Elden Ring.

lol How does it take 6 years to make a direct sequel? It is not even a complete reboot like BOTW. IIRC, they mentioned how they would be reusing the same map as BOTW in addition to adding new areas.

So why has it taken a year longer than Horizon which itself took a 5 fucking years?

What is going on with these studios?

P.S Dont want to toot my own horn, but I brought this up in the Initiative thread. This is not a Microsoft problem. EVERYONE is struggling to put AAA games out. It's almost like they forgot to scale up from last gen.
Just let it go man

2 pages and you already complain about long development cycle, downgrade etc

Youre sucking the fun out of everyone here

They want that GOTY and it ain't happening because of Elden Ring bahahahahaha!!!

Jokes!

GOTY will be GOW :messenger_beaming:

Should come as a surprise to absolutely nobody. Oh well, take time, get it right.

Aonuma has had his hair shorn while Link has a longer, wild mane now, what does it mean? 🤔

At least it was kinda cool to see those extra 14 femptoseconds of footage, the zelda mega-fans will be happy to dissect that for a month or six (6):

Zelda nerd-o's: "IT LOOKS LIKE THE MASTER SWORD IS CORRUPPPPPPPTTTEDD, WHOAHAOAOHOA!" *crossed-eyed face with tongue out*

Lol how can someone say so much bs in one post, souls fans are really the worst of the worst.

Gentle reminder: God of War Ragnarok is next.

There was a graphical downgrade sure but I was referring more to the other things which were changed.

IE - removal of many gamepad features. You were supposed to control a lot more with the gamepad

"It wasn't a real email, but our back and forth with him followed a similar pattern," Fujibayashi said. Having to bring Breath of the Wild to Switch wasn't a huge surprise—"We knew about the hardware... We thought it's probably gonna come, oh and here it is."—but it was a big undertaking, and it meant that Nintendo had to scrap all of the ideas they had for the Wii U's GamePad controller, like a separate map and a different control scheme.

"When it was originally just for the Wii U, we had touch controls," said Fujibayashi. "But we had to remove them... Although it was not very flashy or exciting work, it was still time-consuming and difficult."

In Breath of the Wild, one of Link's main tools is the Sheikah Slate, a device that resembles the Wii U GamePad and allows Link to interact with the world. Originally, this Sheikah Slate was going to be far more connected to Wii U GamePad, to the point where Fujibayashi and the other developers had to overhaul parts of the story when they decided to bring Breath of the Wild to Switch as well.

"We felt that the way the Sheikah Slate is represented in the game and how we use the GamePad in real life synced really well," said Fujibayashi. "So when we had to remove it, I did feel like, 'Oh, it's too bad we had to do that.' And because it was so tied into the scenario, we did have to go back and redesign and rethink the scenario, which was a little bit [of] hard work."'

I dont care that they also wanted to release BOTW on the Switch. But to remove features which were developed just for the Wii U felt like a very low blow to the fans which actually bought a Wii U (the dozens of us). As a life long Nintendo fan I never really recovered from that.

Called it. I want to get hyped for this sequel, it's Zelda after all. But everything they've shown so far looks rather unexciting. Regardless, I have faith in the dev team and am waiting to see what they have come up with.

"So we've been playing elden ring for the last 3 weeks and yeah...we have to delay this game"

Jk

I don't think this is entirely wrong. The Zelda team most definitely played Elden Ring and looked at critic and audience reactions to the game. It definitely had an affect on their development and release schedule. 100%. It probably isn't the only factor, but I think it was one of them. Elden Ring blindsided the industry. You can't ignore a 96 MC game that is literally a direct competitor to yours.

I dont believe that this take is correct

The Switch version still has several drops. It was never a smooth 30 fps experience, even with this "downgrade".

So I dont think that they downgraded the game due to Wii U hardware.

Look at the shot at 00:38 seconds, with the goblins:

It looks the same as the original game in open fields

I hate the original BOTW, but I really hope they fix everything that I hated about the game

I don't see which mechanisms in Elden Ring could be directly lifted and imported to improve BOTW2, in fact. The original formula of a systemic sandboxy open-world was already pretty solid and clearly the dev team has a solid idea of what new gimmicks they want in the sequel.

We're gonna have another year of "Switch 2? Switch Pro? Any day now!" aren't we?

I don't think the Zelda team will take ideas from Elden Ring. It is a little too late for that. But what they can do is find what the unique things that BotW 2 has that Elden Ring doesn't and focus and enhance those features. It seems like there will be sky islands and a lot of verticality in level design and traversal, so they might be doubling down on that content and making more of it. I think they will also have a robust underground like Elden Ring, but Elden Ring did the underground map design and interconnectivity in such a masterful way I would be shocked if the Zelda team rivals it at all.

I guess we can look forward to a half-assed Zelda Superstars collection this year then (artificially available for a limited time only, naturally).
