The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword announced for Wii [N-CONF]

That HUD! My eyes!

Whomever it is at Nintendo that thinks it's a good idea to put the entire controller on the screen like that needs to take a look at every single other Action Adventure game on the market. People are still be able to figure out how to play games without giant eyesores constantly reminding them what to press or do.

I just get a notice to check back "later during the presentation" on e3.nintendo.com, no video links. I guess their connections are maxed out right now?

There were clearly some kind of technical issues. Miyamoto clearly seemed confused and Bill Trinen kept apologizing, if that was supposed to happen then they would have just tried to pretend that nothing was wrong.

Otherwise, they wouldn't have gone out on stage if the game was in that condition.

Exactly. As I mentioned earlier, the pointer in the Epic Mickey demo was also way out of whack and laggy, so I'm convinced there was serious interference.
It's going to need very positive hands-on impressions across the board to drown out the naysayers who just go by how the conference went though.

People are going to hate me for saying this... but the graphics look awful IMO. I'd prefer straight up Twilight Princess style over this. The game looked very lifeless and bland, like Wind Waker minus the charm.

Edit: Not worried about controls. I trust Nintendo fully when it comes to gameplay.

I'm going to be optimistic and say the extra year will iron out the kinks.
I'm going to be optimistic and say the kinks are not present on the show floor.

Well that was pretty.....anticlimatic, I say.
After five and more years of waiting, Iwas expecting to see something a little less banal in terms of graphical style and level design than a mushroomy forest with pretty uninteresting landmarks, a horribily laggy tech demo and a quickly assembled trailer with Twilight Princess music.

I just should keep remembering that both Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 looked drab and uninspired on their first showing, though.

Control stuff was unfortunate, I expect impressions to say it controls better. Like most others love the look. Link also looked more agile to me, which is cool.

they are showing interviews and footage of it @ e3.nintendo.com right now. in the videos shown it works flawlessly!

Not if you're left handed, it won't be flawless.

Between this and the 3DS having only one analogue stick (thus making left hand stylus + right hand analogue impossible), Nintendo has become exceptionally anti-left handed...

@ the ppl who are DISAPPOINT, what the eff were you expecting?

It's hard to answer that question on the spot, but more of a departure from the typical looking Hyrule, and green Link would've been a start. I'm fine with classic Zelda mechanics and gameplay, but the setting and general look of the game feels like it's treading old ground...again.

you could tell there was a ton of inference, I'm sure it'll work great. WSR works great with all that stuff.

I like the artstyle, but kind of underwhelmed that we didn't learn more about the game besides the controls, but I'm sure that'll come later.

the controls were at minimum controversial, judging by the number of people who strongly prefer the gamecube version.

what's easier, wagging your hand around or just hitting a fucking button? seriously, you have to ask yourself, what the fuck is the point?
You didn't have to waggle your hand around in TP, you just needed a quick flick of the wrist. If you find that difficult then there's something wrong with you.

Man...I don't know. I don't mind cel-shading at all, but this style looks pretty god damned bland to me. I want to love it, but I don't.

Rather disappointed. The controls will be great, no doubt, but it just seems so early in development. The one area we saw (and the glimpse of the lava area) were so generic and barren. Wasn't bowled over by the enemy designs either.

Expect it no earlier than summer next year.

And the graphics looked like a dreamworks movie tie-in. Sitting on the fence isn't good Nintendo (hopefully it becomes more like PoP 2008 and painterly as dev continues). But atm, compared to the gorgeous Epic Mickey, it's like night and day.

What I wanted to see was gameplay and story/setting changes, and there was nothing of that (except the flying bug from Perfect Dark).

Still, it was a brilliant conference.

Damn it, why aren't these videos individually indexed? I want to see this stuff.

THERE WILL BE A LEFT HANDED MODE!!!!!

i hope

They presented Zelda so poorly. Really killed the opener.

Even if it did control better, it's still the same old game design.

Yeah, with a theater that big, there was bound to be extra IR light floating around tricking the Wii Remote into thinking it was pointing at a sensor bar. Isn't there a thing where the Wii MotionPlus recalibrates whenever it's pointing at the sensor bar? If it keeps thinking it's pointing at the sensor bar when it's really not, that's probably what was messing it up.

My god, people really are going to use a borked stage demonstration to scream "NEW ZELDA WILL SHIP WILL BROKEN CONTROL YOU CAN'T PLAY TEH GAME LOL NINTENDO WII AM SUCK!".

But then, that's gamers for you :lol I can't wait to see the floor impressions and then see people say "What?! The controls WORK? On a Wii game? How can this be! I don't trust these reports! No Wii game has ever worked! Ever!!"

Don't ask them.. :p
They know there was interference, there was in previous years; there was in other games shown today..

Some might answer with actual concerns, but as seen in the previous replies..

The interference; somehow.. equates into "lol motion controls suck this if proof it doesn't work"..

Well, there are left handed gamers that thad no problems with Twilight Princess, so is more like a 50-50 situation..the option should be there; for a company that is focusing so much in accessibility..

Because they didn't explicitly announce a left-handed mode in Zelda you assume there isn't one? Or have I been trolled?

As usual, Nintendo has the best E3 conference, and Zelda is why (along with the new DKC!).

I don't know why people are complaining about the art-style. Would it be preferable to have slightly upgraded graphics from the TP engine? :lol

It was hard to watch the presentation, but I'm a bit surprised at how many people are convinced this means the game has bad controls. I mean, the controller practically didn't work at all. It will control fine on launch.

Eh?
You're going to judge the game based on the demo area?

Eh, not feeling it yet, and not only because of technical problems during the demonstration.

Also, it should have been more aggressively cel-shaded. The way it looks is really strange, neither here nor there.

I've never had any complaints about 3D Zelda controls, so the Wii-refined scheme isn't going to make or break Skyward Sword for me. Nor will the graphics, I suppose, although I agree with all those saying that the style is in a very awkward middle ground between Twilight Princess and Wind Waker. I'd rather have full-on Wind Waker graphics. But the colors are nice!

Haven't you heard?

Zelda fans hate Zelda.

Uhm... the controls didn't work at all at the conference. Sure, that probaby was due to techincal problems, but it's hard to get a great impression when the presentation completely fails.

The worst thing is that the trailer isn't spectacular at all either, it doesn't show anything special at all. Zelda as usual – and I really hoped for more than that.

But it seems like Nintendo doesn't want to show too much so far, so ... let's see.

All of the assets showed Link right handed.

Miyamoto played left handed.

Miyamoto even held the "real" sword in his right hand.

I'm fucked.

I like the graphics style. Its Mark of Kri Disney style to the next level.

Some of you guys and girls are really blowing the control issues out of proportion.

Control interference was clear with both Epic Mickey and Zelda, and no one knows anything about the story or set up...so how is it "same old same old"?

I know since Twilight Princess this has been a recurring complaint of yours, but I honestly don't see it as an issue of any significance. It's not any different from how controllers have been designed since the NES, and probably only takes ten minutes to get used to it if you are left handed. I have never seen anyone else complain about this "problem" outside of this board.

the visuals were basically exactly what I wanted.

when the beetle flew into the air and gave the wide-shot my jaw dropped. beautiful.

Controls were bad during the conference because of the wireless of laptops and so on. Anyway no doubt it will feel great.

True enough. Plus, you're avatar has Conan, which is fucking awesome so you're automatically right. :-P
