I just beat the game and I wanted to write up some of my observations. Like many of you, Zelda is my favorite franchise. Ocarina of time is my favorite game of all time, etc. I have been looking forward to this release since it was announced. I thought it was a great game and a good addition to the franchise, despite the few issues I feel the game has. I will be heavy with the spoilers, so I don't ruin anything for anyone. Feel free to ask me about everything.

Things that I really liked:
  • The characters were well done. I really enjoyed talking to all of the NPCs. I felt attached to Zelda, Link, Fi, Groose, and Grannie, which was deeper than any of the other games.
  • I liked that elements from the past few games made it in to this one. The WW ocean exploration was recreated in the sky, kind of. The bug catching from TP is back and is much improved. My insect loving girlfriend loved it. There were interesting items and locations, as well as fun side games and quests.
  • Speaking of quests, I liked that SS included some minor "quests" to perform to assist NPCs.
  • The sword controls, which I anticipated I would despise, were actually quite good. I had fun in combat like I did not have playing TP on the Wii.
  • The story was heartfelt. This goes back to the attachment to the characters, but story is what makes these games for me and I really liked this one.
  • Many of the puzzles that needed to be solved required me to think for a little before being able to move on. I love this about Zelda and I am glad that there were some challenging puzzles in this iteration. However, I would have liked to see some more difficulty, but I understand not making the game too difficult for new gamers. SS struck a good balance here.
  • The last boss fight and ending were not disappointing, but I would have changed just one thing at the end.
I thought the parting of Fi and Link was beautiful. I cannot say enough about it. It was wonderful and perfect and so heartfelt. My problem is that after this beautiful close, they cut to Zelda and Impa parting ways. This was an emotional parting as well, but only for Zelda and Impa. I didn't get to see what they went through and so I was not very attached to them. It annoyed me that I felt this emotional high, which was dampened when I got pushed off onto Zelda's story.
  • Upgrading items is a great twist on the game and being able to access the item bag on the fly is great.
  • I also have a few other comments about things I liked that I will spoiler tag. I will try to clarify where in the story they take place. The last boss
looked badass! It was like Akuma and a fiery version of Princess Celestia had a sweet baby.
    Groose
was fantastic! I was annoyed at his character when he first appeared, but he ended up being one of the best parts of the game.
    The last dungeon
was fun, albeit a little frustrating. I was glad that the dungeon made use of all of the items in an interesting way. I appreciate it when developers make me switch between items and figure out what to use.
My girlfriend does not play games, but when she does she plays Zelda /Dos Equis Guy. She plays a few games and played some of this game with me, too. She loved using the beetle item. She did not like the music as much as this game as others in the past, though.

I'll add more if I think of them, but I really did like this game, despite the problems I will address now.
Things that I did not enjoy:
  • Dowsing sucked. As others have pointed out dowsing is a fun idea in theory, but it fell flat for me. I was irritated by this feature in a few different ways. First, I disliked that if I was in a different zone than I needed to be to dowse, I was still told to dowse. I am inside a building with one room, "C" begins flashing, it tells me to go out the door . . . really?! Second, it doesn't add the item I need to dowse right away.
When I needed to catch those stupid music notes that took me forever to find, the game waited until I was over halfway before it gave me the dowse option for the notes, which I couldn't use underwater. Finally,
my reward for completing a spirit world challenge was more dowsing options?! Why? I don't even use the damn thing as it is.
[*]As stated above, I loved Fi. However, I disliked that she attempted to provide statistics for everything. "There is a 90% chance that you should go through the door you just unlocked." Okay. I know that (spoiler about ending)
her wanting to expres human emotion at the end really made the ending for me
, but listening to it during the course of the game wore on me.
[*]My girlfriend told me that I was really irritated at having to fight
The Imprisoned several times. I was really irritated at that. Seriously, three fights to seal him?
[*]A spoiler about the ending that irritated me,
was after I went back in time to rescue Zelda, Demise claimed to have been "imprisoned for eons," but earlier we were told that the past took place just after he was imprisoned by the Goddess.
I may have misunderstood, but that took me out of the story for a moment.
[*]Many of us have commented that the skyworld is boring, because there is not a lot to do. That is because there is not a lot to do in the skyworld. It feels like it takes forever to fly from place to place and there is a lot of flying back and forth, which brings me to . . .
[*]There is a character that I will hate for the rest of my life,
the Water Dragon. He can go to hell so hard. The demon is knocking on HIS door, the water dragon will be the first one down if the Imprisoned is freed. Link has proven himself twice to the water dragon and when Link needs the water dragon to tell him one part of one song, which the Goddess entrusted to the water dragon, he decides to make me hunt for music notes, because he can. Well, I would let him rot if I could. That is what I think about that.
[*]I already touched on disliking the traveling, but the game did not alleviate this problem. There is a lot of unnecessary running back and forth. I don't expect the game to become completely linear, but it was a bit excessive. Specifically,
running around for the three dragons was annoying.
    [*]Final boss fight spoiler -
Was I the only one irritated that after fighting the Demon Lord I had to run back to the temple to sit in order to refill my hearts? Could they not have provided them any other way?
[*]For whatever reason, I assume by design, usable items do not replenish if you reach a game over? I had to use a fairy during the last boss fight and I still died, so I re-challenged him after the game over screen, assuming I still had my fairy. I took a few risks early on, relying on that fact, died, and went straight to the game over screen. I noticed this a few times throughout the game that my arrows or seeds weren't staying the same after game over, but I thought I just may have been mistaken. This was kind of irritating and I can imagine a younger or new gamer become frustrated over it.
[*]Comment about overall dungeon design -
I was slightly annoyed that so many of the areas were reused so often. Namely the volcano zone. I thought some of the reuse was really enjoyable, but it did kind of wear to be playing and think to myself, "didn't I already do this three times?"
A brief comment on how to fix this problem in the future, this covers some end game spoilers
Since there was a gate of time, why not use it and have us visit these areas in the past? I know it makes it like OoT, but this would have let them reuse the designs, while adding different content.
[*]I am not sure how I feel about this myself, but in the next Zelda, I might enjoy playing as Zelda for a little and seeing her side of the story. Give her some abilities or make her like Shiek in OoT and let us explore her character, too. Like I said, I am not sure how I feel about it. This would need to be done just right. I think I would like it to be optional, maybe as a director's cut version that becomes playable after you beat the game.
Overall, the game was a lot of fun. I really enjoyed it. I hope Zelda on the WiiU maintains this quality, which I am sure it will. I think the ending could lead to an interesting start for another Zelda. My idea would involve
Fi becoming possessed by the spirit of Demise in her slumber and the Master Sword needing to be purged. Link could even be tricked in to doing it, which would be an interesting twist for the game.

The one place these hints make sense is if you've put down the game for a month or so and when you pick it up again you're standing in the middle of the desert and you recall a vague idea about needing to find a magic circle or something....then the hints are actually useful.

And that is what down d-pad/the REQUESTING help option is supposed to be there for. There is a 95% chance Nintendo has forgotten this.

Agreed. BTW it's a her not a him and I hated her.

No kid is that stupid.

This has to be a joke. The only "complex" part of the game is mastering the controls and she does not give you a single piece of advice with that. All she does is drag the game through the mud.

This. I got stuck at least a dozen times during the game, and not once was she able to offer any advice. But even after 30+ hrs she'll still nag you about your hearts, about your low battery (which isn't actually low) about boss keys and boss doors, repeats what others say verbatim, and pretty much anything thats only completely obvious after the 1st dungeon. I can't see 90% of what she says as 'helping novices'. If anything, I can see her turning more casual people off from the game, as she really, really tries your patience.

I ESTIMATE A 95% CHANCE THAT YOU'RE ABSOLUTELY FUCKING USELESS FI

So, out of curiosity, just how open is this world? I'm not sure if I can finish TP, I have Skyward Sword unopened whispering my name.
While what everybody else said is true, don't be scared into thinking that there's just like.... one single corridor that you follow. The surface areas ARE expansive and rather large, and you can explore them (apart from areas restricted until later). I have really, really liked the surface tbh, it's much better than gaf had me believe.

Anyway, just did my first Silent Realm segments... Wow, that was infinitely better than the tear quests in TP. I was on the edge of my seat, and the music that plays when detected is insane! XD
Finally got some dust relics too which allowed me to upgrade some of my items like the Slingshot, Shields and Beetle. About time I can start properly upgrading, I'm starting to get efficient treasure supplies at this point.

Honestly I can't fathom how some people consider this the worst 3D Zelda yet. Sure, everybody has their own perception of what Zelda should be, and this one can be lacking in some areas (not to my personal detriment), but I feel this game does so much right. I love it.

I honestly don't get this.
The fights were different each time. There were multiple ways to take him down each time. The fights were fun and intense. Was it because you were fighting him the "wrong" way? You know you don't have to slash his toes, right?

Why would anyone 'know' that? It's what Fi suggests that you do, and since you CAN do it, there's no reason for anyone to think thats not the only way to kill him.

They were not different enough to warrant 3 fights. Maybe 2.

It's explained, it's just not a good reason.

Scrapper sees where Link is diving to and tries to beat him to the punch because he's a dick. Then he doesn't want to ascend anymore.

I didn't have a problem with that part, but I had a fully upgraded bow and a fully upgraded quiver so I was shooting everything in the face.

But why would link be diving at the bottom? :p

I guess it's weird the way you dive and then pick a spot, but even if he was beating you, that shouldn't be where link was headed.

I didn't really like going back to the first dungeon, but it atleast had that Stalfos fight and the key didn't take long, but this part legitimatly annoyed me. At one point you have to fight a moblin on that narrow platform, and scapper likes to be RIGHT behind you, and I got knocked backwards off of it. Then I was being blocked by him, and the moblin destroyed him. It was also annoying fighting the 2 x Lizalfos, because my sword goes right through them unless they're about to breathe fire, attack, or taunting. Doing that while they would split and attack Scrapper was not very fun.

Because
there are air vents all over the place and he is perfectly tall for the ledges you can jump from. Plus the first trailer he was in showed Link jumping on his back.

They were not different enough to warrant 3 fights. Maybe 2.

Yes they were. First fight was vanilla to get you used to the concept. Fight 2 introduces his ability to climb and the cannon, making the fight a lot more tense if you miss a shot with the cannon. Fight 3 he gains the ability to fly, and you have to race him to the top as he flies to the temple and almost makes it. Each time it gets a lot more tense and introduces new tactics.

I may have misunderstood, but that took me out of the story for a moment.

That part confused me until I read what Fi had to say about (ending spoilers)
Demise. She claims that Demise is "an eternal being" that's "conquered time itself," which makes me wonder if Demise is some kind of Gigyas-esque being that can physically manifest itself when it chooses and requires utter destruction to be stopped.

I have a quick sidequest question maybe someone can answer:

I've noticed in Skyloft a
clawshot target near the Goddess Statue in the north part of town, in the daytime there are five cats, and at nighttime there is nothing there. Is this part of a sidequest maybe connected with Instructor Horwell, the guy with Mia's cat in the Knight's Dormitory? If so, I have no idea how to trigger it.

If someone could just answer that yes or no, so I'll know if I'm on the right track there.

Finally got this today and... wow. I feel like a kid again with new Zeldas. I played all day up until the start of the 2nd dungeon and I didn't rush either - a good 6 hours or so playtime up until that point. Looks great and plays great. Sometimes I have problems taking down enemies that block a lot since they seem to read my moves and KNOW that I'm gonna attack their weak point so they then change to blocking that... Am I doing something wrong?

Brilliant anyway, I wanna go play more.

*sigh*

So I'm already having Zelda withdrawal syndrome. Beat the game, did all sidequests, all gratitude crystals, all goddess cubes.. now I just turn it on randomly and run around like an idiot hoping something new will happen. Didn't imagine it would hit me this time, but it has. I never get that with any other game, even AAA ones.

NO, I'm pretty sure there isn't a single sidequest with cats, except the first 5 min of the game where you have to fetch one.

It strikes me that the repeated messages from Fi and treasures etc, is there for people who only play for a few hours at the weekend.

When they come back to the game, it tells you your current objective, and reminds you on rupee values etc.

Its a shame the game does not detect how long its been since you last played, and then reacts differently the shorter the gap between play sessions.

Opinions are like.. you know the saying. Don't let anyone's criticisms detract from your enjoyment of the game. Everyone experiences and expects different things. And yeah, the 'run like hell' music in the silent realms is scary as fuck.

So, what the hell would be the problem with text being overlayed on the screen, ie. '+20' for a few seconds, instead of a damn message that stops everything in its tracks, even in the middle of a battle, and takes several seconds to dismiss? Every other game does it. There's so many ways to accomplish the same thing without such jarring and frequent pauses and interruptions. Same goes with treasure and bugs. Just show a damn image of them + descriptive text overlay WITHOUT stopping everything.

Just finished up the 6th dungeon (including the pre-dungeon parts) and
did all the stuff involving the Gate of Time
.

I'm glad the pre-6th dungeon part wasn't that long. The
Silent Realm
was the best and most difficult one yet.
Scrapper
is a total asshole, but I didn't mind his part since it was so true to his character. I love him so much.

The 6th dungeon itsef
(Fire Sanctuary)
was pretty neat. It wasn't mindblowing, but it felt pretty unique.
Actually going inside and outside felt great. I did a double take when I got to the bird statue that would actually take me to the sky. The Mogma Mitts were a good idea, albeit a bit underused. And I totally got stuck in the room with the hidden wall. I felt like an idiot once I tried bombing the wall only to have it work.
The boss fight was both good and a bit of a letdown at the same time.
Fighting Ghirahim is always good, but it didn't feel different enough from the first fight. The pre-fight sequence was the best part. He is one twisted mofo, and I absolutely love him.

Next I headed back to
Faron Woods so I could go through the Gate of Time
. I ended up having to fight
The Imprisoned a second time
, but I was expecting to have to do that soon anyway.

What came next can only be described in three words.

FvTv9.jpg

From the moment I struck the Gate of Time until the moment I returned to the present, my jaw rested on the floor. The Gate of Time transforming was incredible, as was watching the gears turn through time. I walked through the gate to see what awaited. Then came what has to be one of the greatest cutscenes Nintendo has ever crafted, both in information given and visually.

Zelda's Lullaby was playing in the background. Zelda's the reincarnation of the goddess Hylia. She had a complex plan to keep the Demon King from destroying the world. Link is the only one who can use the Triforce. GETTING THE GODDAMN MASTER SWORD! And then Zelda was going to put herself in a deep sleep until when she is needed. To anyone who says Link is emotionless, pay attention to him during the entire cutscene. I almost shed a tear seeing him sad when Zelda sealed herself away. Now I'm back in the present searching for the Triforce. Not shards, not one piece of it. THE WHOLE FUCKING TRIFORCE.

Bravo Nintendo. I was already leaning towards calling Skyward Sword my favorite Zelda game, but I believe that single scene has sealed the deal. It may just be me being excited about what just happened, but I can't remember being in such awe at any single part in a Zelda game. I can't wait to get to the end now.

Also, I bet I know the identity of the old woman in the Sealed Temple.
My guess is that she's Impa.
Don't tell me if I'm right or wrong.

I'm in the fourth dungeon and I entered a large multi-storied room. The camera panned over to a lock at the top floor (which looks like the boss door locks) for about three seconds, and then Fi appeared and told me that she "has confirmed the existence of an unfamiliar lock in this room." Then I make my way up to the lock and there's a little tablet there that hints at the location of a key. Then Fi appears again and says that "there is a 95% chance that the key referred here opens the lock in front of us."

Thanks. Thanks a lot Fi. I can't wait to be told for the fourth time that there is a high probability that something big is behind the boss door.

Are people really defending this nonsense?

I don't people are really defending it. For me, I think that they're annoying, but its only a very small part of a 40+ hour game, so it doesn't offend me that much. As was stated earlier, it could've been alot worse by being incredibly dumbed down. Imagine if there was a smaller set of items to use, or if dungeons were mostly action and setpiece based.

I did. I was close to massacre my whole family in frustration in what was at least 15 attempts. I tried everything. Then suddenly I got it right. Don't know why really.

Some member on here (sorry bro forgot who you were) told me to do small strokes instead of full strokes and that worked perfectly. Messing up 19 times got the song stuck in my head :p

Plus more than "defending", is like an "acquired taste". :p
I liked Fi and see it as Fi reminding people on what was said, since many has the tendency on spamming the A button and not read texts, in case they missed the bit of info.

Then again, lets be fair. People around the net has complained about Fi "been too obvious sometimes", to then go around and complain of them not understanding something or not knowing what to do even when there are tablets saying it; on top of Fi saying it too. Heck, from what I remember Fi even gives you advice on how to strike/attack with the sword "the first boss" and people has complained about they not knowing how to or the game failing to tell you about it.

Not defending it, it is ridiculous, but some are just more tolerant and can look at the bigger picture.
I love the game, but it seems pretty clear to me that 90% of the time Fi appears it's just to restate something you learned less than two minutes ago. I don't see any reason for it even if an eight year old is playing.

I know people who hated it when Navi explained how to open a door that one time in the Deku Tree. Wonder how fast their controllers would fly out the window when they play this. :p

I really don't find it necessary that your objective has to be stated twice in the span of 30 seconds just in case you weren't paying attention (you can't skip any dialogue and it moves too slow for you to not read it). That's when you're supposed to press D-pad down.

I did it on my second try.. with my first try being successful but they didn't "love" my performance lol.

The harp hasn't been a problem for me it seems. The trick for me is to position the remote like how Link strums the strings... and kind of gently "wave" it back and forth, don't do stiff movements. Let your wrist move.

Yeah, not sure what Nintendo were thinking with that. It's annoying but easy to brush off and get back into the game. I'm replaying Paper Mario:TTYD at the moment also and there is such minimal hand holding... in fact it doesn't hold your hand at all lol. And when they do need to explain something they make it really entertaining and whimsical, like the black treasure box guy who gives you upgrades in the form of "curses". Would be awesome if Fii was half as entertaining.

"MASTER! You know that robotic guy with the hook for a hand and big tricorn hat and peg leg and eye patch swinging a sabre around who you just had an intense battle with? There is a fairly high probability that he was the robot pirate captain!"

I hate that I'm started to get an instinctive sense of exactly when she's about to pop out and tell me something obvious whenever I make the littlest accomplishment. I thought Nintendo was getting really good lately about helping out sucky players without getting in the way of skilled players, what with the standardized helper systems in their recent games that only appear after a certain amount of failure.

And I never even had a problem with Navi back in the day. I always found her little voice quite cute actually.

Edit: duh adressed in the post above :p
Just like back in the days with Navi in OoT, some people would absolutely hate her, and others would hardly notice her at all. I didn't see her as a problem, but as a pretty cool companion in the game.

But no matter how big or small a problem Fi is, I really hope Nintendo creates some solution to their companion system next game.

Fi continuously hits the stupidest things into your head again and again, like the boss door...being a boss door, even 4 dungeons in. People getting stuck on other parts are because she's then completely vague about things that could actually warrant explanation.

Pre 5 and dungeon 5 spoilers:
When I was going to board the ship, I was following the douse symbol and it kept disappearing. I ended up going in a big circle 2-3 times. I thought I was looking for a ship that was abandoned long ago given the time shifting stuff, but I had to actually man the cannon and shoot a bomb at an invisible ship that was actively moving, Fi said nothing when I made no progress figuring that out. But then once I do get on that ship, she redundantly says that the pirate robot I just killed was the pirate captain, I go under a beam of light and she immediately tells me I can shoot the timeshift stone from here, etc. Things I didn't need to know, and/or didn't WANT to know.

I didn't get stuck here, but there's a lot of people who didn't like the part where you return to the first temple for the water. The mogma says he lost a key, and Fi says nothing if you take forever finding it. If you go to her, she'll repeat that you need healing water, follow the douse. Well, the douse is behind the locked door, which you need the key for.

She's actually BAD at helping, and instead is literally just constantly redundant. The post earlier saying she would make a good log if you drop the game for awhile is somewhat right, she'll remind you of what the actual objective is. The problem is that that's all the optional stuff; when she actually pops up it's typically immediately after reading it off of a stone or hearing an NPC talk about something, and she just repeats the same thing. That won't help anyone who put the game down for awhile, because it happens without you even regaining control or being a separate mention spaced out whatsoever.

If you're fine with the humor I can see being okay with her interruptions, but if you aren't there's nothing you can do and it never lets up. I'm 30 hours in, past the 6th dungeon and she is still just repeating what NPCs say in the town about where to go, when it is already clearly stated.

was pretty neat.

This is pretty much exactly my thoughts. I've gotten further than you though, and have an endgame question.
I'm currently in the dungeon in Skyloft searching for the triforce, but I have some sidequests I want to finish up before I finish the game. Will I have time after I've finished the dungeon, or will it be a point of no return?

Your fine to do any side quest you want, Fi will make it obvious to you before you hit the point of no return, at which point you can choose to proceed or not, and still do any side quests.

Finished the second silent realm last night,
the water underneath the broken rail that you have to push was particularly cruel.

Who in their right mind holds an archery contest facing the front door of a building in the middle of the day? Third degree manslaughter will look great along side the petty theft and breaking and entering charges on Link's rap sheet.

Done with the fourth dungeon, overall I liked it a lot. The boss was pretty cool if a bit easy.

I have absolutely no problem with the swimming control, they're pretty easy and they work as well if not better as analog swimming controls.

At least he has a guilty conscience about rummaging through people's shit in their cupboards and wardrobes. Except when it's his sorta-girlfriend who's actually Jesus and has a heart piece to ransack. Then it's totally cool.

Just completed the second dungeon (took me 11 hours), from what I understand the game gets better from this point. Loving it so far, so can't wait to see how much better it gets.

The pre-dungeon locations have been really good so far and the puzzles have been enjoyable, though pretty straight forward. The actual game is a lot harder than TP and OoT. A lot harder.

All motion controls work perfectly, from the combat to the flying. Only thing which I dislike is rolling a bomb when seated on a couch, since it's feels awkward getting the wrist positioned correctly. When seated on a chair, it's a lot simpler. Still early, but hopefully motion controls in Zelda are here to stay.

Ignoring Fi and not using the dowsing is probably making me enjoy this game a lot more than if I had taken the assistance. No better feeling than to discover an item or solve a puzzle with the provided aid. I still believe this is Nintendo's Zelda equivalent of 'Super Guide'.

It won't be my game of the year (that belongs to Xenoblade), but I feel it'll be one of the best I've played so far this generation.

Funnily enough, you could hit B to speed up her text. Which, unless I'm mistaken, is the ONLY speech in the game that you could speed up. I've mashed B with every other character and the text remains slow as molasses at times.

Holding (not mashing) down 'a' speeds up text for most dialogue.

i just got to the pre-dungeon 5 area and holy mother of God
