The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

threw a few credits into SDOJ Novice mode since I didn't have a whole lot of time to play it, and the game is incredible. Unfortunately, in 3 attempts I never made it to the S5 boss (only the 3 or 4 minibosses each run). Stupid stray bullets. Can't wait to actually sink some time in and attempt to 1CC the regular modes.

Not a Cave game, but I'm really tempted to nab Caladrius, seeing as how it's $40 on Amiami right now. Anyone care to push me over the edge?
watched drunkninja played caladrius at the shmupsmeet, and was actually surprised at how awesome it looks. definitely convinced me to snag a copy.
edit: also, I'm assuming you own a J360, because caladrius is region-locked.

i got my SLE shipped only yesterday, even if i preordered the game 2 months in advance. i'll never pre-order anything again from nippon yasan…

They have good prices and the packaging is great so it's a sacrifice I'm willing to make. I like them but yea, the preparation time can be a pain.

Yeah this is really their only downside. I tend to not mind waiting so they're one of my favourite stores. If you know, you can take it into account anyway.

My LE is also still preparing, but I was late to the party anyway.

Damn it, NCSX have shipped my copy of SDOJ on Frday but the USPS-tracker is still stuck at 'electronic shipment info received.' Getting worried :-/

Mine shipped on Monday, but apparently went to Springfield, MA.instead of straight to CT. like shipments from them usually do. It's probably now waiting at my front doorstep while I'm at work.

When did you pre-order? They had a few blurbs on their update pages on receiving the game late and from multiple suppliers.

I paid good money for this Dynex!

Yep, got a J360, so I'm fine.

Resisting SDOJ for the time being is becoming more and more difficult. That money could either buy SDOJ or a Super Famicom game or two... not sure what to do.

SDOJ is awesome man. I'm a huge fan and I've been sticking to the novice modes (about to boot it up). I'm a big cave/raizing fanboy though.. as far as cave ports go I'd probably throw it in my top 5.

Okay, I looked into the lag claim.

I tested in arcade mode, using my 60fps camera, recording repeated button taps and averaging the amount of frames it took for the bullet sprites to appear.

I've found that there's no difference between 1080p smoothing off, 1080p smoothing on, 720p smoothing off, or 720p smoothing on.

That's a relief!

Did you adjust the screen size? I had it at 108/108 with smoothing on when I noticed lag. I set it at the default 100/100 with smoothing off and the lag went away.

Loving Saidaioujou, though I've been burnt out on Cave games for a while. All the modes on this one feel like they have something to offer, and the scoring is nice and clean and simple. I'd really like for Cave to go back to simpler three-button setups tbh, their four-button mode-switching setups are just too much to deal with in the heat of things.

Glad they went back to basics. Daifukkatsu was their absolute worst game imo, hands down.

You can post what you think their worst games are, if you want. But Daifukkatsu (not Black Label, which is pretty good) is the only Cave game I can point to and say "yeah, I really don't like that." I have every game they've released for 360, and I've played a couple others besides, but DFK just sucks imo.

- The scoring system is terribly overinvolved and makes Power style the only one worth playing for score; the worst part about it is that you spend a lot of time *preparing* to start scoring, so if you mess up it feels like you've just wasted all your time. In other Cave games you at least feel like you're making progression, even if that death is a huge deal
- Autobomb makes 1cc's feel really cheap, I'm okay with Cave's "last bomb counts for autobomb" system, but every bomb being a life makes every life feel like garbage. Together with my first point means that (imo) this game is terrible for both scoring and survival
- Hyper-cancelling bullets is an incredibly dull mechanic. It could be argued that hypering in Black Label is much more important for scoring, but I think that game gave it some extra nuance that makes it more exciting, for instance how you want to position yourself so that there's a ton of popcorn enemies streaming bullets at you to cancel via bees, and the fact that you're getting a ton of scoring items while doing it
- The graphics are incredibly bland
- The music is incredibly bland

There are a few other Cave games that don't feel as solid as the rest, but DFK is the only one I don't care to play again at all. If it weren't for Arrange A, the only reason I'd put in the disc is to make sure I still don't like it.

Yeah, I'm not a huge fan of autobomb. Makes 1CCing way too easy. I know that if you play for score, it's not as big of a deal, but I don't. So...

Although, even with that issue, I still really like Daifukkatsu. Just... not as much as some of Cave's other games.

I think their worst games are nin2 jump and instant brain. In terms of shooters.. donpachi.

Sacrilege!

Worst for me is probably the Ketsuipachi mash-up. I just can not figure out what the hell is going on, ever. Two great games seem to just cancel themselves out. Like the cover, though.

Okay it's cute that my bugged A-S arcade mode score is still top 20 on the leader boards but I would really like to have my own score up there now. ;_;

I strongly agree with these two points.
At top levels, of course, 1.5 devolves into some ugly boss milking as well, which is another big point deduction. Why Ikeda didn't learn to put boss time-outs in every game after ESPrade is beyond me...

Don't agree with these.
True, Power is the only mode that's really fun to play for score, and your analysis of the score system is spot-on, but that's why I like it. It's all or nothing. And when you hit a stage-long full-chain, or get close to it, it's just that much more satisfying. The stakes are that high.

Re: bullet cancelling, 1.5 gets this complaint a lot, but again I probably bullet cancel at max twice a stage.
In BL you do it for most of the second half of all stages. Besides the bees (which are a cool addition), I don't see much nuance in that at all, and the point you mention about positioning yourself to cancel the most bullets as possible is just as true in 1.5.

I also don't agree that the graphics are bland. Stages that scroll in multiple directions, heavy use of transparencies, neon hyper effects, crazy bosses like stage 3 Ura, suicide bullets in the second loop etc. I think it's one of their better-looking ones personally.

My personal list of worst CAVE games (all arcade only):

1. Pink Sweets
Multiple board revisions couldn't fix a bad, boring game.
2. Ibara
Grueling boss grinds ruin the great stage medal-chasing BOMBA gameplay. Zannen.
3. Akai Katana
This is only for the PCB version. Insane slowdown when you have a lot of items around your craft makes the game play like you're running underwater, especially for the third ship. Thankfully the 360 version fixed this.

Thanks. I tried with smoothing off but it just makes the game a little more pixelated. I'll try changing the Xbox resolution (currently it's set to 1080p), maybe the rescaling is creating problems in this port.

I had mine Xbox set to 1366x768 (because that's my old Sony LCD max res) thru VGA and the shimmering was terrible. First time I've ever had this problem.

Changed the Xbox res down to 720 and it looks great - except I now have half inch black borders around the screen...but I can live with that for now.

Hope we get a patch soon - I don't understand how they messed this up when every other Cave game was fine.

Probably been covered already - but does anyone notice you can't put your initials in after a run in DDP Sai? All my top scores say CAV.

Same here. 720p fixed everything, now it's much better. And yes, you can't enter initials. Not a big deal, but still annoying. The initials screen is part of the arcade experience, why take it out?

I actually really like Nin2 Jump, except for the fact that it crashes when I overload it. Slowing down a ton is cool, crashing is not. I think Donpachi may be the only Cave shooter I haven't played, everybody seems to think Dodonpachi just did it better. I'll try it someday.

As for Pink Sweets, I really enjoy the 360 version though I don't really go for boss milking. I think the time-outs are reasonable enough, though. And it's one of Cave's few games where the shooting is fun in itself. The arrange mode is great too.

Ibara is the same story - cool if you ignore boss milking. Though I've only played the PS2 version.

Ketsuipachi is not ideal, no. It's just too much I guess. I would be happy with just Ketsui mechanics with a ton of extra chips, but Ketsuipachi layers too many scoring systems together. Instead of something clear and clean you have this hot mess.

Plus one for Nin 2 Jump.

There is a lot to like about the game for score attack and time-attack junkies. Resolution is a bit crummy but it is cheap and fast and creative with the shadow puppet graphics.

Anybody here in Japan that can do some YAJ stuff for me? My go-to guy is unable to do things of this nature for a week or so.

Don't really want proxy services, prefer person to person stuff where working things out isn't impossible.

SDOJ came in and I played a few quick games on a big screen with the 360 controller...so that kind of sucked, but the game itself seems pretty cool.

I ran into one issue I saw mentioned on Shmups I think, I'm misjudging where my ship is pretty often. I think it's cause the laser turrets above the ship stand out so I'm kind of seeing that as the center rather than the ship sometimes. Course I'm playing a few feet away from the TV, hopefully playing on the cab helps (still waiting on the adapter though).

Otherwise I see what people are saying about starting with the clothes on. I am not ready for the bikinis just yet.

I found this to be a problem as well, but after a week, I've gotten used to it and it's no longer a problem. Just takes some time to adjust to it.

A bit late, but just got SDOJ in last night and it is fun. Even though I'm not much for bikini clad moe, the game made me see passed it right away. Funny enough, Cave's been doing that a lot to me this gen; I know I wouldn't have given Deathsmiles a second look had I not known how fun it was. Now I have this giant purple SLE box, and I'm liking it a lot!

I'm playing this on a 4:3 CRT, and it's a shame that the menu can't be adjusted separately to fit the screen. It's like in MMP/PS where you'll have black bars in TATE unless you turn off wide mode, which then zooms in way too far. I can fix this for the games just fine, but it leaves much of the main menu cut off; I wish "General Screen" had a zoom option too. I toggle wide mode whenever I want to use the store, thankfully it preserves the other settings.

Sound was also iffy, this was the first game I ever had to adjust the audio for. Turning BGM/effect/voice volumes to 100/80/50 respectfully fixed it, but I wonder what the PCB settings were.

Fixing the wide mode issue with SDOJ reminds that I need to do the same thing for Akai Katana and MMP/PS. Spent so much time calibrating those thinking they were stuck in 16:9. This guide would've been useful, but looking at his adjustments, mine are actually quite different, though I'm using a native RGB monitor.

I need help. I need a TV or monitor that's 23-24" which is good for shmups. I'm gonna make it a dedicated shmups thing so it'll be in primarily Portrait mode. Gonna connect my 360 to it with HDMI. If anyone knows of a good brand or model, please let me know. Been doing research and it's not helping much.

Also, finally had to email Nippon-Yasan about my DDP SDOJ LE preorder. It's been preparing since last Thursday. Unacceptable. Anyone else had theirs shipped out from them yet?

I ordered the SLE from them and it was shipped on release day and in my hands on Monday morning. Also preordered the LE separately in case they fell through on the Super but since they delivered on that I just didn't pay for the LE. They're showing all versions of the game as In Stock so yours should have gone out on release day too. Just checking, you only had the LE in your order and nothing else, correct?

Yup, nothing else was in there. Not the first time they took this long for other orders but this is well past a week so I'm extra miffed about it.

I would say... don't connect it with HDMI and find a cheapo tube TV or CRT monitor and connect it with composite cables or 360 to vga adapter. minimize your input lag.

then again, if that isn't important, someone else can probably make a better suggestion. I currently use a 27 inch sony trinitron tated and a 19 inch NEC FE990 ClearFlat.

If you want to ensure the lowest lag, you want the ASUS EVO 23". I think the model is the V236H but you can probably find it by searching ASUS EVO or asking in the FGC thread. I believe it's 2ms lag, which is 1/8 of a frame or so.

that's what I used to use (it's still my main computer monitor) back when I didn't have a crt monitor. still prefer my trinitron and nec by far.

hardest pattern on s4 boss is when he flys up right in your face and spams a tight knit pattern after a no-bullet delay (I typically use a hyper right when the bullets spawn to avoid instant death). much like ketsui, in stage 5 you just have to take out the big enemies first and know when they're going to spawn. when you get near the end of stage 5, there's a TON of bullet cancelling large enemies. make sure you don't use a bomb or hyper (I think that's the requirements.. at least that's what I've been trying to do after I accidentally did it the first time) when no deathing the stage 4 midboss to get the 1UP. helps out a crapload.

hibachi was surprisingly easy (no life and no bomb until final phase) until his last phase, and the attempt before my 1CC I was on my final life with 3 bombs and I got instant wrecked.

Yeah I'm using a 4:3 CRT tated and the menus going off the screen is pretty annoying. Guess there's no way to fix it since MMP was the same way.

Only got to play SDOJ a few hours but it is damn improved over DFK. So far I'm liking A-L best for the ships. I usually prefer type B but it seems overly slow in this one.

Anyone know what all the store unlocks are?

It all lines up with the option menu options if you go left to right, row by row. From Shmups:

uKY6DA5.jpg

I tried reduce enemy fighter in hopes it'd just reduce the sprite (to help me get around not seeing the hit point well), but it seems to reduce the hit box too, like that also shrinks instead of staying the same so it's basically a cheat option (either that or I was getting really lucky while trying to get hit when testing it out).

Interestingly enough, the invisible hit box one has helped me a bit. I guess I'm just used to not having it or something.

The last one (not listed in the menu) is
Saya selectable in the other modes
...one big issue is that you need to click the right stick for it, that tends to screw most players cause most sticks don't have stick click buttons. Supposedly that and other stick click things are being addressed in the patch* too, mapping it to the back button I think.

*Was that posted here? I saw it on Shmups but forget if it was here too, posting just in case:
http://shmups.system11.org/viewtopic.php?p=918989#p918989
Updates regarding the patch:

- The leaderboard bug has been fixed
- Some small bugs involving the training mode and restarts were fixed
- The bug that made the game stop when collecting items was fixed
- Some bug with the music was fixed
- The bug where extra windows slowed the game down was fixed (there you go, Roo)

But best of all, they also made some changes to the interface, including a goddamn retry option when failing a Challenge, louder fargin' sound effects, and the ability to make the ding-dang screen wider.
