Could be worse. My copy seems to have taken a detour through India for some reason and won't be on it's way to me till Monday, meaning I'll most likely have it Thursday or Friday. :(

Fuck yeah!

I wish mine took a detour through India. Worth the wait, I says!

The mechanics changes in the X360 mode are interesting enough to endure the chatter. It took me a while to figure out why my energy bar was going down, hah.

Love the option shop. Markers for all the bees make my obsessive mind happy.

Does anyone know if it's possible to disable the backgrounds? Or lower the background brightness? I've been able to do this in every Cave 360 port but I can't find the option here.

Should I post some pics of the LE? It has some considerable differences from the SLE...namely a different color disc. Book seems the same 77-page, in miniature, though. Packaging is a bit convoluted but I'd expect nothing different from Cave.

Here it is.

I actually prefer the LE printed disc since it is different and not just a reprint of the cover. It is the thickest LE of the Cave releases.

Yeah, they've done backgrounds differently here, apparently you can only switch them out (in the gallery page).

Jewel case for the soundtrack in the LE is pretty cool (at least I'm assuming that's what it is).

oh hey, i prefer the LE disc too. how's the artbook?

It is actually quite good. Mostly character stuff...then a ton japanese text at the back, which I'm sure is informative if you can read it. I flipped through all the pages before playing, picked my character I'll play then boxed it up and put it on the shelf and will probably not ever look at it again.

As for the game, I'm a little underwhelmed by the sound design. I just can't get the ratios to work and it seems so muted (the sound effects). I've got Music at 100, Effects at 100, and Voice at 60. Is this the way the arcade board was? Game looks very, very slick but at the same time is a bit soulless. I'm hoping I'll get into it. Fwiw, I'm not really a Dodonpachi fan.

Oh yeah, another thing. The ISO seems like it is big. I'm rocking a 4GB 360 and cleared 1.7GB and it would not let me install it.

if it's just a smaller version of the SLE artbook, i'm fine with that.

It also does not come with the fancy slipcover/dust jacket.

I'm perfectly fine with the LE. Slots in perfectly with all the other LEs. The one thing from the SLE that is really neat it the Arcade card and huge coffret it all comes in. I definitely want the SLE but not now...maybe next year.

Yesterday SDOJ arrived! Got myself the normal edition, but only had time to play the first 3 stages on novice. Damn, this game is a good deal harder then their last games!
I hope they release it on iOS so i can practice the enemy positions on the go.

Wonder if we can expect any more ports of their shooters to iOS. I hope so.

Just unpacked my SLE and wow, this thing is HUGE. Very nice package, lots of cool stuff for collectors and I love the steelcase instead of the standard dvd case previous LEs had. Installing the game right now, can't wait to try it!

Played SDOJ for a couple of hours and it's pretty damn hard. Don't dare to select the bikini mode unless you want some brutal punishment, it's really the EXPART mode (the engrish in this game is adorable <3 ). It's a lot like DOJ, without bombs even beating the stage 2 boss is an accomplishment. I'm not a big fan of Dodonpachi's chaining, but the bullet patterns are great as usual.

The graphics are not as good as I expected, imho inferior to Daifukkatsu. They used a lot of transparencies and because of this the image is kinda blurry and washed out. The bullets are still clearly visible, it's the backgrounds and sprites that suffer the most.

From a quick look, I can't tell the difference between Arcade and 1.5, seems like the same system with some tweaks.

Hard cover for the hard core. I'd post some sample pics, but it's all basically loli animu ass, and we know how well that goes over round these parts.

just got mine, hell yeah. Only put two brief credits in but I'm smiling. Exciting!

But I feel like the game's display scaling is kinda funky. The game window scaling to the 720p UI I understand, but I feel like the game is scaling the 720p UI to 1080p without smoothing or something (yes smoothing is on in the options, but again, that's game-to-UI level, not UI-to-display).

Not a big deal, but different than the other Cave ports so far.

I'm playing on a 4:3 CRT and there are a lot of little things off.

First, it is a straight rip of the dreadful 3:4 mode from Pink/Pork. So just how they ham-fisted that mode, they've done it here.

Then when I scale the image to the proper ratio (1.33:1) I still get slightly oval-ish bullets. Takes a little tweaking to get it normal...and loosing some to overscan. Gorgeous package but a few little thing make your go "really?"

I'm playing on a tated PVM also, was pretty gutted when I noticed it was using the same mode when rotated as MMP / PS & the awful Guwange port... I'm OK with having to tweak it too get it right once you're in game, but there are always going to be the overblown cropped menus when you aren't. It just feels lazy, especially when the Mushi Futari & DDP DFK were done so well... It really is strange why Cave wouldn't try to be consistent with it...

Oh well, The game looks absolutely beautiful on my (newly acquired :D) 20" PVM. But it is really... really... hard. So far I can only get too stage 3.

Put about an hour into it (mostly 360 mode) - I can see myself playing this for a looooong time. :)

I do notice some aliasing issues - I'm running it VGA at 720p, and all my other Cave games look pixel perfect, but this has some weird horizontal tearing or something going on. Its the whole game to, including the intro.

Regardless - I gots to do some research on this game, cause I'm not finding the scoring hook here. Doesn't seem to use the bullet cancel hyper method from DDP Resurection. At least I don't think it does. o_O

I thought I'd hate the happy nonsense gong on on the left and right of my screen in X360 mode, but it actually doesn't bother me.

I tried out bikini mode....yeah, I'm keeping my clothes on for quite some time. :p

Indeed. I can not believe how pretty it is. Up till now Mushi HD was the prettiest at the lower res since they increased the backgrounds as well. And this one is even better. It would be nice for them to go back and revisit some of their older titles...maybe assets don't exist or something.

On my setup (PGM, so 31kHz) I actually keep the smoothing on since it helps with the scaling...otherwise I've got to fiddle with it so I don't get some background syncing aberrations.

Game is seriously no joke in the difficulty department. 360-mode is kinda the new novice but still a good challenge since it has the give and take with the life-bar...and I've still not beaten the fourth boss in that mode.

Novice is just plain hard. Good challenge and the one I'm starting off with. Did not even realize you could change their outfits for difficulty. Bikini is an impossibility for me.

And I still don't really have a handle on how the hypers and stuff work...just activating them when there are a lot of enemies on the screen and alternating rapid and laser to suck everything it. Gonna have to read up on the series.

Region-free means I can just pop it into the US 360 hooked to the HDTV. Gonna see how it looks in 16:9.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Not a Cave game, but I'm really tempted to nab Caladrius, seeing as how it's $40 on Amiami right now. Anyone care to push me over the edge?

Reaction seems to be mixed. Sucks there is not a demo.

A lot of people who bought it like it, though. I love it and $40 seems a no-brainer since there is fresh new art and the breaking thing and all the buttons and combos (not Silvergun hard, though). I certainly place it well above other non-Cave 360 shooters...but not as high as the stuff from Qute. Solid B+. Vertizontal is a nice change too, if you like that format on the old PC-Engine games and Mars Matrix. And there is always DLC for a couple new characters and art and a good across-the-entire game 8-bit Soundtrack if you end up liking it and want to flesh it out.

Ranking the recent non-Cave shooters I'd go: Ginga Force first Caladrius second then Shooting Love 10th third. (the last I still have to sink into, just first blush).

Ah, completely forgot about Ginga Force. I can barely keep up with all the shooters on the system at this point.

Well, I figure I'll give Caladrius a shot. Gameplay footage looks solid, and $40 is probably the best price I'm going to find on the thing. And if nothing else, it seems like a nice change of pace from all the bullet hell.

Be warned that smoothing adds marked input lag, I was amazed when I turned it off and suddenly the whole game felt 10x tighter and I did a lot better. Maybe it is not as big a deal on a CRT, but I am hoping they patch this because it looks a lot better with smoothing ON. Pretty big flaw in the port. For now, I will play with it off because otherwise it feels all wonky with the lag.

Yeah, I hooked it up to HDTV. There are definitely visual issues. With smoothing off the whole background shimmers. And the actual sprites and stuff are weird. Nothing too bad but damn does it have a hard chunky feel...especially so with smoothing off. I did switch the 360 to 720p and the aliasing issues on the movie were gone and menus look a bit better. I'm not talking something like the lower-rez menus an Akai Katana but just some nastiness. Even during gameplay on the background objects.

None of this do I experience on the CRT via VGA/RGB. On that display it looks like the most insanely gorgeous high-end Naomi cab or something. Kinda like, "Holy Shit, I can't believe I'm playing this at home" type of images.

I've got a few other consumer CRTs I'll be putting it through to check it out. Hope a patch comes because this is definitely not up there with some of their better ports (image-wise). Better than Pink and Pork and Guwange, though!

Add: I'm zooming the image out on the HDTV a little to fill the box to the edges of the screen. Tweaking that gets rid of some of the stuff.

Has anybody tested this beyond feeling it out? This might be the first I've heard of such an option causing lag in a port like this.

I could give it a test tomorrow with my 60fps cam maybe.

Got 99 problems and only one of them is a waifu
I pre ordered it from them like 2 weeks before the game came out. Maybe they ship by last names?

It is also the first port that adds a bunch of slowdown if you turn on the side windows (input/score display), so in that context this is not too surprising. I would like to see someone test to see how much lag is added as well, though.

Finally got SDOJ today. I've played way too much retro shooters lately, I'm not used to bullet hell games anymore.
I have to agree that all the chatter in 360 mode is very annoying, I turned down the voice volume and turned up the BGM and SE volume after a short while (a decision I regretted during the final boss fight). But there are still section where you have to wait for them to finish (I didn't try to skip it yet, though).
Now to find out how actually do anything...

Damn it, NCSX have shipped my copy of SDOJ on Frday but the USPS-tracker is still stuck at 'electronic shipment info received.' Getting worried :-/
