The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

With Eurotaku always ask if they have the item in stock first because I have found they haven't on a lot of occasions .
Solaris is a great shop and Jacob a really nice guy !

It's only a small victory, but DoDonPachi Saidaioujou won NeoGAF's XBox 360 Exclusive Game of the Year (with a staggering 13 points)!

I forgot to vote (busy). But my two top shmup releases for the year were Mii Force and Ketsui PS3. Was hoping Don Paccin would have released.

took a month longer than it should have, but finally got the 1-ALL in Progear. I probably just missed the loop requirements, so looping it will be my next goal.

I played for close to 4 weeks without knowing there was an extra 1UP too, but oddly... after I even figured that out, I still 1-ALLd without triggering it.

Nice dude! Man, Capcom can you please just put Progear out on XBL? I'm sick of playing it off my comp with no score saving.

thanks :) and Progear on XBLA would be the best. I'm still hoping some sort of collection comes out per that winter Capcom arcade poll so that more people get to experience it.

I still haven't watched the STGWeekly which just covered Progear two nights ago. I reckon it's time to check it out

so no Donpachin for NA I guess

Yeah, pure shit no news and almost february

There is some easy way to get it on your phone in the shmups thread but I want a localised version. Not a big fan of "going around the system."

Hopefully sometime this year. Also want their Hello Kitty game (but that is less important, obviously).

Noooo! Release your games on Steam and you'll have enough support to keep that twitter account (and your STG business in the west) alive!

Fucking this. Haven't the Ys releases on Steam done pretty well for XSeed? I was trying to find figures because I could've sworn they were posted somewhere, but no luck. Niche genres like this seem like a perfect fit for Steam.

It's not just the English Twitter account, @cave_world (the Japanese account run by Masa-KING) is also being closed. It seems they're consolidating to just the @cavegames account, which has been around for a few years but everyone seems to forget about.

I quit after day 2 of Donpaccin cause it is not a non-IAP friendly game. Also there is nothing big being circumvented when you put it on your phone; it's like taking a screwdriver to the nubs on an SNES cartridge to play out-of-region games.

Has CAVE even hinted anything big other than smartphone freemium garbage for the foreseeable future? rip in peace CAVE.

Yeah, but I'd still just prefer to get it on the NA store...considering it seems to have daily and timed challenges or something. I'm downloading it now

Also, I'm the kind of person who would probably not take a screwdriver to do as you said to play SNES games...I'd rather prefer to get a japanese Touch (or americsn touch and set it up with japanese gift cards for purchase) to play that region's games if I ever wanted to go that route (which I've not yet felt the need for yet).

That said, I'll download it to check out and hope for a NA release.

Answer to this is, unfortunately, not yet.

And actually this Juggler x Monster game they just put out was apparently so popular on iOS they had to shut down registrations server-side off and on for a week or so. Because of that their stock has been lifted in the past couple weeks despite them being in the red again last quarter.

Donpaccin also hit above 300k users at least in its initial release, so that's probably looked at as enough of a success to continue down that road, even without a localization.

Any word on Don Paccin getting localised?

Wish it would come over as I love the iOS games. Checked out the japanese version of it but I've no idea what is going on. Doesn't help that my cell service where I am currently is very spotty so it is hanging on connecting and loading screens. I'll try it once I get home and to my wifi.

At least the icon is on my Cave shmup page on my phone!

I would think the closure of the CAVE World English twitter is probably the final word.

The game itself has a lot of text baked into graphical assets, so the localization work would probably cost more and be more involved. Plus you have to update it all the time, and keep the localized version updated. These are probably the biggest reasons holding them back.

If you want to play Donpaccin overseas, I imagine that the only way will be to use some of the workarounds.

I started playing it a bit last night. A few stages in. A shame it likely won 't make it as it seems totally fun and happy and cute. A liitle thick for non-japanese speakers but should be doable (not instant brain hard, though). I did not realize it was like space Invaders and galaga, only moving back and forth.

Just out of curiosity, has anyone tried the Android ports by G-Gee? Same as Cave iOS?

I only have iPad as an iOS device, and would rather play on a larger screen, but it might be nice to have a shmup on my Galaxy S4...

Yeah, the games are the same. They're supported by G-Gee though who are slow to update things if shit breaks after let's say and OS update.

Surprised you liked it. The shooting aspect wasn't fun enough to keep me playing, just felt like a grind/collectathon.

I've barely played it. I'm only rocking cell service now (and in the mountains) and it is basically unplayable given all the call-aways for data.

But, I can tell I'm going to totally enjoy it. The feedback of sounds and items is awesome. Plus, it is just cute...the little plane animates all happy-like. I'm gonna sink time into it during the coming month, along with the Karous game that just came out.

So NESiCA's JP wikipedia entry has Dodonpachi Saidaioujou listed as a forthcoming title. No source is listed at all. Someone asked the CAVE World twitter about it, and they said the company hasn't announced anything official.

That said, the JAEPO arcade show is coming up in February, so maybe we'll see an announcement there? Or it could just be a random blip of bad info on the net. Hard to say as CAVE's first NESiCA title Akai Katana tanked due mainly to serious input delay, so I was pretty sure they'd given up on the platform.

Would be nice if this was true. I know I'd play the shit out of it (as long as they fix the overflow bug...)

Damn that doesn't sound good, such a shame seeing CAVE reduced to work like that and Don Paccin.

Hopefully they've just gone into hibernation and will return once next gen has established itself. Atm the 360 still remains as the only option for a big budget STG which is just what CAVE want to get away from.

It'll be interesting to see which next gen machine becomes the system for STG that's if devs are willing to move away from the 360/ iphone / 3DS and next gen becomes re-release and indie only

Yeah, the reason I say that is because NESiCA uses Taito X2, which is PC-based, meaning that porting over from the XBox 360 should be relatively simple. Despite that, after Akai Katana in July 2012, there haven't been any CAVE NESiCA ports (nor have there been any more Grev ports). The problem is that shooters have to share these cabs with fighters, and the fighters get the vast majority of play time which in NESiCA's case = income.

There might actually be some Xbox One titles in the works for the JP launch, we'll have to see. All the 360 shmup devs would have been familiar with Microsoft's framework, so the Xbox One should be relatively painless for them.

The 3DS has Karous and Kokuga now, but neither are making waves.

I think the fact that shooter devs have not been able to make this jump due to an awkward generation transition is very worrying indeed.

As a One owner I'd not mind if they released again on the MS box. I had tons of fun (and will continue to have fun) on J-360. But, deep down I'd prefer to see shmups go to the PS4.

I played a DoDonPachi game for the first time today (Dai-Ou-Jou, specifically). It's been a long time coming, so I'm glad I played it to escape my essay writing temporarily. I've been getting back into shooters lately (yesterday, I played Area 88 for the SNES for the first time. Really awesome.) because I don't remember the last one I beat. Maybe Jamestown.. Anyway, Very Hard was too tough for me, but it wasn't insanely confidence crushing. I tried Black Label for a minute, though... that was a frightening experience.

I'm looking forward to picking up Saidaioujou in the near future (cheaper on Amazon than in-store, I'm guessing?). Also, I don't know why I never picked up Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5... I should totally do that.

Just found this and the Shoot em up thread tonight, so I'll see where these take me!

The best thing you can do is pick up Mushihimesama Futari Ver 1.5. A must have shmup in my opinion.

That's what I noticed when I checked out the shoot 'em up threads here on GAF. I'll look for it next time I go downtown.

Edit: Looks like new copies are expensive on Amazon, so I'm guessing I should look for used copies?

I have Deathsmiles.
Game always freezes on the last stage.
Wish I could get my money back. =/

Dunno why I bought it in the first place. I have the 360 version.
Maybe I'm just partial to the whole "grinding" aspect in an arcade game.
IMO it's a neat model. Play the hell out of a game to unlock everything, then realize you can sail through it without any trouble even without the unlocks.
(Works really well with Hard Corps Uprising)

If you don't care about owning an original print copy, you can always get a Platinum Collection version, same game and still region free.

http://www.amazon.com/Mushihimesama-Futari-Ver-1-5-Platinum-Collection/dp/B004BH5R9W

I'm one of those people who dislikes seeing their game cases not matching. I'd rather buy it used, but thank you! Wow. It's way too expensive in the US. If I do decide to pick up platinum here, it's only ¥2100 right now.

Heh, wonder if you just tricked yourself or something. DOJ Black Label tweaks things but afaik isn't necessarily harder...I think it might be considered easier than regular DOJ actually.

Wow, really? Maybe it was because I was immediately fighting a boss that I was so terrified.

Immediately? Which version did you play? The PS2 version has a mode called Death Label that's nothing but bosses and is hard as hell, probably one of the hardest games ever made. I don't know if the 360 port has it. Otherwise, Black Label is a bit easier than vanilla DOJ, but you need to know the game quite well to appreciate the difference. Both versions are damn hard, though, compared to other Cave games.

Better to have a mismatched copy of MushiFutari than no copy.

I'm getting the feeling that now is the time to get any CAVE 360 games you missed.

DOJBLEX on 360 doesn't have the death label mode.

Haha yeah I'm a little OCD when it comes to that too but if I can get a game for half the price I'll probably do it just because. As much as I love Cave shmups, paying over $100 for one never leaves me feeling good. I'm having that dilemma right now with buying Ibara for the PS2. I have it burned already and I'd still have to use Swap Magic to play it but having the case would be nice. It's hard to drop over $100 on a plastic case with artwork.

Ibara's PS2 port is so ass. I would put that money toward the arcade PCB and start saving up.

yep. Not worth the $150 (the price I paid for it) price tag. Hell... I've been considering just selling my copy since I own the arcade board which is basically only double the price of the PS2 version (really not that much for a CAVE board).

Coda

Member
As much as I'd love the board for me it would just be a spiraling down of money I don't have. I don't have a supergun or anything like that, I just play my shmups on my PS2 Sega Saturn pad because it's more relaxing to me than having my stick on my lap (which I usually just use for newer fighters). So I'd probably spend so much money by the end of it. I can tell the PS2 Ibara port is kinda ass though. It's too bad it is.
