The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Best pick-up would be Mushi Futari. Best presentation. Best presentation on region-locked would be Mushi HD.

Best pick-up (going on region-free) that might get more difficult to get down the line? I'm guessing Pink/Pork set. But be aware it has the poorest presentation. Still worth it, though.

Espgaluda II BL disc is quite a bit different than the iOS...as in much much harder. Awesome title though. Might even be my favorite disc of theirs, for art, characters, music, colors, carnival feedback on scoring, etc.

It won't have the smartphone mode obviously, but what's different about Espgaluda other than the movement (and thus harder difficulty)? I don't really understand the whole "Black Label" aspect to be honest.

If I had the money back when it came out, I would've just got that big collection.

Yeah, basically movement and increased difficulty. Just a different beast on disc. Gotta pay a lot more attention to scoring and your buttons. I'm no expert, though, just an observation. Never tried Black Label so don't know much about that.

Espgaluda II iOS is my favorite iOS port by a wide margin.

futari could potentially be last region-free title depending on sales (1), but I guess it sold just enough to warrant espgaluda 2.

They never said that, as your own links attest. Futari was treated as a test case.

espgaluda 2 was to be cave's last region-free title for awhile (2), but they released one less than a year later.

Again, as your own links attest, DFK was not region free. It was licensed for release in Europe by RSG, which would not have happened were the game released region free.

then mmp/ps was to be the last region-free title again (3).

And it was, for a very long time - for two and a half years. By then, the licensing reality of Cave games had changed drastically in that time with RSG pulling out.

mushi HD was to be the last console port (4).

Then they released saidaioujou which was both a console port and region-free.

Which, again, was heavily "motivated" (read: moneyhatted) by Microsoft. And with RSG gone, there was no one left willing to take a chance with it, thus making it region free was a no-brainer if MS is footing the bill anyway.

I don't feel like it, but I should take the time to pull the threads and responses with people freaking out over these articles. If cave-stg was still around, it probably would've made it 5 times easier. I'm sure I saw something regarding akai katana too.

If Cave-STG were still around everyone would be banned from it because EOJ would have completed his transformation into icycalm the 2nd had he not cut himself off when he did. Good riddance.

*clears throat* I'd like to read out the following statement courtesy of Jockel. *unfolds note*
"Fuck Ketsui's fifth stage. Fuck it."
Thank you for your time
I'm mad, Ketsui 1-ALL is on hold now, I'm gonna go for the DOJBL 1-ALL instead >=(

Anyone who frequented the site in its last year would know your first sentence makes no sense whatsoever (quite the opposite was true, actually), but I do agree with the "good riddance" part.

PS/MMP set is worth it for Pink Sweets Arranged alone.

A few days ago I got the farthest I ever have in Dodonpachi (mid-way through stage 6).
Not bad considering I haven't played the game in several years.
Could probably get through the first loop if I practiced at all.
But that just wouldn't be my style.

I'd love to say I could frequent the site but I was banned.

Twice.

The first time EOJ used a rule that he made up on the spot just so he could ban me for quoting him (with full credit, even) on another forum.

The second time, I dared to disagree with something he said and he deleted my account over it. Of course, this was during the period the site was invite only with a secret URL and at the same time he was threatening system11 not to share stuff he had originally written on this forum or face consequences, or something.

The guy is a fucking maniac.

You weren't banned in the last year or two of the site because I remember you were a frequent poster there in 2012 until the site closed down that September (and the wayback machine can prove it). Funny how you left that part out.
I get that you don't like the guy, but you don't have to lie about or exaggerate stuff in a feeble attempt to make him look bad. It just makes you look bad.

Anyway, I remember the wacky stuff from a few years back, the forum was sort of a clusterfuck (it shut down and started up again at least once). But the last year things were going in the opposite direction, he no longer did the weird-ass "citation policing of the net" and only seemed to ban a few trolls now and then that no one minded being banned. There was also a group of a handful of mods so he didn't run the show by himself. The site just sort of fizzled out, as by his own words he lost interest in shooters and moved on to other things in life. He put up all his strategy guides on shmups forum some time before the end as well.

That is why your sentence did not make sense to me, you made it seem like he was increasing in icycalmy-ness toward the end and he cut it off to prevent that from happening, when in actuality I saw nothing of the sort in the last year, the site just sort of died an uneventful death from his apathy for the subject matter.

There's a difference between "region free" and "released in all regions".
They're both attempts to reach outside of Japan and to a bigger demographic.

There's been a lot of doubt regarding their future games/ports over the years and theyve always pulled through. Recently...news of asada leaving, closure of the blog, mobile focus and related responses on the last page are examples. People were skeptical after espgaluda 2 too. I know I was worried that they gave up on the west, so I bought a J360 lol.

I almost picked up Mushihime Futari 1.5 at Bic Camera two nights ago, but then became concerned that it wasn't region free. I see now that it was, but is there any way to tell on the box of a game if it's region locked? I thought checking its region would tell me, but apparently that's just the region of release, it seems.

What's the issue? I apologize if that particular statement offended anyone, I just meant it in the sense that the game is tied to a particular piece of hardware unlike a PC which can be anything. Again, no offense meant - just saying I'd rather be able to play the game on any laptop/desktop/whatever than having to make room for a 360 specifically just for these games.
nothing, don't worry. I guess my previous comment looks a little bit overreacted.
anyway, I just think it's absurd, the idea... just even thinking about something like "hardware DRM", but whatever... it doesn't matter.

There's no way to tell it from the package. Even some games with official European/North American releases are actually region free; all my fighting games are PAL and still work on my Japanese 360, even if the back of the box says "PAL only". You need to ask here or google around.

What part of my post is a lie? Everything I said happened exactly as described.

Yes, I had recreated my account after he deleted it, but it is certainly a lie to say I was as invested in the forum after that second coming. Most of my contribution to the site's users was in the frequent poster only section (which by its nature could not have been preserved by Internet archives) and that is something I never bothered returning to.

I always heard he was a power tripper, so none of what you've said surprises me. I just didn't post frequently nor interact with him much, so I have nothing bad to say. cave-stg was still a great resource.

Man, I need to get a tate solution. A permanent one that also looks nice. :)

I'd love to get a customized Kraylix designed for tate but that's really more money than I want to spend right now. I'm actually considering whether a cocktail setup might be the answer. It would have a nice super retro feel to it. Anyone have any suggestions for cocktail cab kits?

I feel like after a while, playing a Cave shmup would not be too comfortable with that layout but I may be wrong. Would be pretty cool looking though. I really want a candy cab someday but I just have a 13 Sony Trintitron that is super easy to tate because of it's design and my PS2 shmups look fantastic on it with component. I have an LCD I tate somehow with my vibraphone and little stand, it's funny but gets the job done because the monitor is so light.

it's hard to match a good tate setup. I first used some lcds for awhile before snagging a NEC clearflat. grabbed a 27 inch sony trinitron soon after, and then found an NEC XM29 about an hour and a half away...which I snagged and I've been using ever since (thing is so heavy it's insane).

astro city cab ships the week of 03/24/14, so I'll have to snap some pics with some CAVE games for the thread ^_^

Exciting! You must be hyped up like crazy! :)
I'm rocking an Astro City as well. Not quite a Taito Egret 2, but more or less the next best thing.

you have no idea... (well maybe some idea :p) but yeah, it was paid off in full last month and this wait has been killing me.

I was a bit too slow, otherwise it would've been an egret II. the 4 that he had were sold a day before I could get one. to be honest, I like the aesthetics/look of the astro cab more but the tating convenience of the egret II is a clear winner.

Press Start from Mushihimesama Futari 1.5!

Figured I'd share this with you guys. I recorded it off my Xbox 360. If anyone also has some great text tones from Cave games I'd greatly appreciate them! I have some from Dangun Feveron too if people are interested!

Same here about the aesthetics, at least the original one. Not a fan of the big speaker boxes on the later models. Note if you want better sound there's a few ways to go about that. I never thought about it myself until playing Ketsui at a shmupmeet on a Net City and noticing how much more bass it had.

And while I'd like an easily rotatable screen, it hasn't really come up as an issue that often...although that could just as well be cause I don't look for horizontal games cause I can't rotate. I'd like to get a Blast City or (through some miracle) an Aero Table but even then I might just use it as another vert cab.

less bass is better right now since I'm on the top level of an apartment :p but I'll have to look into it when I move (potentially in October).

one of the downsides is that Progear is one of my absolute favorite games and all my other games are vertical ._. it's still not supposed to be that difficult to rotate.

I should have something written up on mine eventually. I set it up so it's adjustable and (probably) wouldn't be an issue noise wise regardless. But it can do enough shake the cab which is kinda cool, and I have it wired up to take in other input so I can basically use the cab as a regular music speaker. The simple mod is to just swap the speakers but it wasn't enough of an upgrade for me so I loosely went along the lines of this route.

As far as rotating, I met a guy at a meet that I think said he puts the Astro on its back, at which point you just lift up and rotate the screen, vs pulling it out semi horizontally which I imagine is a massive pain in the ass.

Finally got a chance to play a modern STG on an arcade machine yesterday, DoDonPachi Daioujou on a New Net City machine. I'm not sure I can ever play STGs at home on my standard HDTV anymore...

I found an old DoDonPachi arcade machine today. I didn't like the sensitivity the arcade stick had, but that's no excuse for my shameful failure. ;_;
(I died as I took a picture while trying to play simultaneously. I meant to use a bomb..)

This is seriously my biggest concern with getting a cab because I also love Progear and I love fighters too so ideally I'd need to have two cabs. Right now I'll just keep living the ghetto life with my 13 inch CRT.

I've recently tried taking a break from Dai Ou Jou and tried playing Ketsui again.

The game has a surprisingly easy beginning. If I'm not mistaken, the second stage of Ketsui is easier than Dai Ou Jou.

That's why you get a cab with a rotate mechanism like an Egret 2.

That's awesome. Never knew that. Shmups aside I always thought the Namco Cyberlead was so cool looking. I almost was gonna buy just the arcade stick portion from a guy on ebay and mod it but I quickly realized how ridiculous that was. I'd like to own any cab one day.

Had to post this below when I searched for the cyberlead lol...

Any good resources out there for where to buy cabs (if you don't live in CA)?
Some people here probably have some leads, otherwise I'd ask over on Shmups, Shoryuken, Neo-Geo, Arcade Otaku, etc., basically arcade game specific forums. There should be a buy/sell/trade forum on each, and I think I've seen sticky posts about buying cabs here and there.

No worries, man :)

In a slight act of hypocrisy, I actually ended up ordering Ketsui for the PS3 (which I do have lying around since before), which is apparently region-free. I had no idea it even existed until I watched STG-Weekly on Youtube and they randomly mentioned it. Does anyone else have the game? I guess the 360 version is identical? Is it a good port?

Edit: vvv--- Sorry, I expressed my question badly. I was wondering how good the ports are in relation to the arcade version, as well as whether they have extra features (stage select, etc) and arrange modes? Good to know that the PS3 version doesn't have specific issues though, thanks.

Other way around - the PS3 port is a port of the 360 port, done quite some time after the 360 port was done. We've run the ports side by side and weren't able to tell a difference.

Both versions are considered very accurate.

The Ketsui ports are excellent, they're just light on quantity. There's only one arrange mode (a very good one, though) and no HD graphics, but the port is arcade perfect, the training mode is good and the game is FUCKING AWESOME so it's well worth a purchase.
