Made it into the last level of Mushihimesama (normal original). I died right before the midboss though, and really I limped my way into the stage anyway. Too many segments that I feel like I have down easily in practice (like the stage 3 boss and the stage 4 dragon party) but end up consistently fucking up / bombing through during real runs; I'll have to get more consistent before I can get serious about stage 5 / clearing the game. Definitely not comfortable with getting the stage 3 1up without using bombs, lol - I wish training mode let you start in the middle of stage 3 or something.
I think this is probably my second-favorite Cave game so far, after Ketsui (which is probably too hard for me but is still fuck-awesome). I think I like Mushi more than Espgaluda (my only Cave 1CC and probably my most played of their games) so far, really - Espgaluda's unique mechanics are really fun to play around with, and I absolutely love its aesthetics, but even for a STG novice like me, its difficulty curve is a little too gentle - the game doesn't ever really start putting the screw to you until stage 4. Mushi probably has the nicest-feeling difficulty curve out of all the Cave shooters I've played (I imagine this will change if I get better though); it never feels too easy but also doesn't feel like a brick wall at any point. The fast bullet speed makes it always feel pretty intense, too (I actually kind of like normal more than 1.5, the latter feels sort of lacking in comparison). The lack of any real scoring system (in original at least) is a little unfortunate though. I'm not at the level where I really consider my score, but I do think the scoring systems in Ketsui and Espgaluda are fun to poke at - I guess this is the main reason a lot of hardcore Cave fans don't rank Mushihimesama too highly?
Also been messing a little with Dodonpachi - I was trying to 1CC it back before Mushihimesama came out, and only now have been putting in a few credits here and there. Definitely a lot tougher for me than Mushihimesama, even if DDP's huge stack of bombs act as a pretty powerful crutch. I feel like I should learn Mushi better before I try to learn the last levels of DDP (my best in DDP is mid-stage 5, and I seriously can't get anywhere in that level without just bombing the hell out of it - my STG fundamentals are pretty weak since I kind of got weaned on Espgaluda's constant "free" bullet cancelling).
All awesome games though. I'm kind of interested in playing Deathsmiles sometime, it'd be cool to try out one of their horizontal shooters.
