The Mega-Cave Shooter Post, because they're totally awesome and sweet

Has it been officially confirmed that Cave is releasing games for Vita? They are listed in the new "Adult Famitsu" magazine with TBD title and 2012 date, and it says their castle game social sim game will come too (http://www.cave.co.jp/social/shirotsuku/)

Ever seen getting my Vita my desire to play games on iOS has dropped about 500000%, I can't imagine the awesomeness of smooth as butter Cave games on Vita.

I just posted this over on the shmups board referring to Espgaluda 2 for 360.. Maybe you guys can help too:

I've read the guide and I'm still having a tough time simply surviving. I can't get past Stage 2 on Normal Xbox360 mode. Admittedly I'm not the best player, but I've gotten damn close to 1CCing DeathSmiles, Ikaruga, and Dodonpachi Resurrection so I feel like there is something fundamentally wrong with my understanding of this game.

When I'm playing the Normal Xbox360 mode:

I keep reading that there is an auto-bomb and that it has something to do with your Guard Gauge, but I lose a life every time I get hit regardless of how full my gauge it. Does auto-bomb only activate when you're in Ketsui mode?

And what's up with the mode you enter when you hold down the Ketsui button? I've watched some videos on Youtube where the player activates it and then just sort of hovers over a boss until it dies.

The guard gauge is sort of confusing. Does it recharge on it's own? Should I only use the big charge blasts on bosses?

How often should I activate Ketsui mode? My strategy right now is to save up gems throughout the level and only use it on bosses. Is this wrong?

I just can't figure out why-other than needing to practice-I'm struggling so much to figure this one out. Any quick and basic noob tips are welcome and appreciated. Thanks to anyone that helps out.

I'll try to help, but I'm no expert on Galuda.

When I'm playing the Normal Xbox360 mode:

I keep reading that there is an auto-bomb and that it has something to do with your Guard Gauge, but I lose a life every time I get hit regardless of how full my gauge it. Does auto-bomb only activate when you're in Ketsui mode?
Autobomb only activates when you're hit with a bullet while in kakusei mode (ie. when the bullets slow down). If you get hit in regular kakusei, you lose 50% of your bomb meter, and if you get hit in zesshikai (hold the kakusei button down), you lose 100%.

And what's up with the mode you enter when you hold down the Ketsui button? I've watched some videos on Youtube where the player activates it and then just sort of hovers over a boss until it dies.
I assume you mean the bomb button; the longer you hold your bomb, the more meter it consumes, and the more damage it does. It's good for skipping difficult patterns and/or taking a boss out quickly. If you're talking about holding the kakusei button and sitting on top of a boss to kill him quickly, then you were watching Black Label videos, which is a very different game.

The guard gauge is sort of confusing. Does it recharge on it's own? Should I only use the big charge blasts on bosses?
No, there's an item that recharges 50% of your bomb meter. There's one before the third boss, the fifth boss, and the sixth boss. I think that's all of them. And use them wherever you think you need them to survive; dying with bombs in stock is usually not a good idea in any game.

How often should I activate Ketsui mode? My strategy right now is to save up gems throughout the level and only use it on bosses. Is this wrong?
I assume you're talking about kakusei here; yeah, you don't want to horde gems until you reach the boss. When you kill an enemy in kakusei mode, their bullets are canceled and turned into gold, so it's very useful for surviving difficult sections.

I just can't figure out why-other than needing to practice-I'm struggling so much to figure this one out. Any quick and basic noob tips are welcome and appreciated. Thanks to anyone that helps out.
Espgaluda 2 is a hard, and fairly complex game. It's probably the hardest shooter I've beaten (but I've only played for score and not survival, so ymmv), so it's going to take time and dedication to get through.

One tip I have is that zesshikai is actually useful for survival in certain situations. You'll have a ton of suicide bullets heading straight for you, but every enemy you kill will cancel those bullets (and their own bullets), and killing enemies doesn't consume a chunk of gems like regular kakusei (zesshikai drains your gems and gold at a fixed rate IIRC), so you can use it to get through a long section if you're fully prepared.

Other people say that maxing your kakusei level is useful for surviving (and scoring) as well; I have no idea what that actually changes, but it's easy enough to do, so whatever. To do that, you have to enter 'over mode' by letting your gems run out while in kakusei, which will turn the enemy bullets red and make them move faster. You'll see a meter circling your character, and every time it fills, your kakusei gets 1 level stronger. I think you have to fill it 3 or 4 times to max it out - I usually do this right after the giant cannon, before the stage 1 boss.

I have no idea where I got "ketsui" from, but yeah I meant kakusei. Haha...

Thanks so much for your response! It did help to clear up a few things for me.

I had no idea about charging the kakusei level so I'll try that out and I'll also try not being so stingy with actually using the kakusei mode.

So this zesshikai mode (holding down the kakusei button) runs off of gems and golden honeycomb things and can be used to cancel enemy bullets? Sounds like it would be a big help in tough spots. Another thing to experiment with.

Once I get on a more basic understanding level I'll reread the shmups board's guide. I'm kind of shocked by the disparity in difficulty between novice and normal difficulty. I 1ccd novice difficulty on my third try or so and can't even get halfway through the second stage on normal.

Pretty much, but zesshikai is still fairly dangerous. What happens is when you kill an enemy, every bullet they've shot gets canceled, and in its place a suicide bullet spawns that aims directly at you (and the enemy itself also spawns suicide bullets once it's killed). Then every time you kill another enemy, their suicide bullets get added on top, and eventually you'll basically have a cloud of bullets following you. To cancel all of those bullets completely, you have to exit kakusei, re-enter kakusei, and kill another enemy, so you have to be mindful of how many gems you have left. Here's a video example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OxTEku0ONLE&feature=related#t=1m50s

Galuda II I think is one of CAVE's least accessible shooters.
Stage 2 is just way too hard, specifically the last section with all the tanks and ground vehicles. You quickly run out of spirit gems while destroying enemies so you have to dodge at least some of it outside of awakening mode. Since there's so many damn bullets it's very easy to get hit here.

This is difficulty scaled to the arcade unfortunately, where games were (until recently) built to eat 100 yen coins as much as possible while still keeping the player engaged. Galuda II was one of the last of Ikeda's works that had balls-out difficulty, and I think they probably hit a wall with this one, where the hardest of the hardcore loved it and everybody else moved on. That's why we saw the brute force changes to gameplay in Dodonpachi Resurrection where players get tons of bombs and auto-bomb (except in POWER) and in Akai Katana the player is literally invincible while transformed.

For me the game is a fine wine...
I'm nowhere near mastering but I do love going back to every once in awhile (especially Black Label which is probably the best CAVE arrange mode). I do hope to conquer it one day, but for now it's just a nice mountain in the distance.

Fond memories of GII Black Label prompted me to start thinking about all the great Arrange Modes we've had on the 360 releases. Since the release rush on 360 seems to have largely abated, my take on the best in this slice of shooting history:

Top 5 CAVE Arrange Modes

1. Espgaluda II Black Label
-Inverts the arcade rules: flip into Awakening to create bullets, flip back into normal state to destroy them. Invincibility gauge allows you briefly to jump into bullet patterns and "intensify" them, then cancel them for huge point gains. Leading to sheer scoring satisfaction. New character Seseri takes over for the useless Asagi. A truly amazing mode that is playable for years. So much room for maximization.

2. Pink Sweets Arrange Mode
-A combination of systems from Ibara Black Label and Battle Bakraid. Build the multiplier up to x16 by chaining enemies and figure out how to preserve it as you plow forward. There are several options for doing so: launching a Hadou gun into enemies or enemy fire and grabbing the ensuing medals or suiciding (which preserves your multiplier). Optimal play is chaotic and suicidal. The best realization of the Yagawa aesthetic, despite not being programmed by him. I love grinding enemies with destructable bullets in this mode with a x16 multiplier. There is a certain amount of grind, but the pace is perfect since enemies will time out in generally reasonable time frames.

3. Deathsmiles II X Mode
-Just outright fun: destroyed enemies will spawn suicide bullets that slowly veer towards you character and turn red if you wait. Cancel them when they're red and you earn red rings which fill up your Power Up gauge, allowing quick resets back into Power Up Mode. No waiting around or tricky resets like the original Deathsmiles. I really wish this mode had a tougher score achievement (something like 100 mil) so the achievement whore in me didn't move on after I hit 60 mil.

4. Akai Katana Shin
-Suprisingly low in my rankings, but this is definitely an amazing mode that hopefully will see more love with the EU release. Takes out the invincibility mechanic from Akai Katana in favor of a screen-crossing katana attack that "catches" on mid-sized and large enemies causing them to shed masses of score items. Includes an extra stage and boss.

5. Deathsmiles Ver 1.1
-The first mode to really tweak the Deathsmiles formula, it's also somewhat hard. Suicide bullets spawn everywhere, but since you can power up at "200" on your item counter, you can use this as a survival mechanic. Scoring is sheer joy as waves of golden crowns crash onto the ground and break into skulls. One of the reasons this makes my list is the Deathsmiles Virtuoso achievement which requires you to beat 1.1 choosing Level 3 and go through the optional Canyon stage, a great challenge.

I'm also a huge fan of Akai Katana's Zetsu Mode which is what the original arcade release should have been, but since it doesn't have any achievements tied to it, it's a pure score attack. For that it's not quite compelling enough for top 5.

I have the same games in my top 5, but I'd change the ordering a bit: Akai Katana Shin is by far my favorite, which probably isn't a big surprise, but still, it's so satisfying to unleash a wave of katanas and fill the screen with gold. Bonus points if you can slow the game to a crawl and make your character sprite + OSD disappear because there are so many items & bullets flooding the screen. (I'll also lump Zetsu in with Shin as being a favorite of mine)

Espgaluda 2 BL would be my second favorite; the bullet splitting, invincibility, and chaining meter all work really well with the game, and Seseri is a nice addition (plus she's very powerful). I also like that it's quite a bit easier than the vanilla game... unless you enter the final boss's third phase without any gems. Then you're in trouble.

Then I'd probably go with the Pink Sweets Arrange. I haven't played it much at all (I've only beaten it a single time), but I like the hadou gun and how it has a more Cave-style scoring system. (And I'll lump 1.01 in with this, which seems to have much better balance than the original arcade game to me)

I like DS2X as well, but to be honest, I think it's a little slow. You're constantly inching back until the suicide bullet trails turn red, then launching them off for rings and repeating. It's fun, and I like the constant stream of items you're getting, but it would be nice if it were more dynamic and frantic. But I dunno, I'm not that great at it (HS is 8.4b w/ Follett), so I would like to get a better score before really judging it.

Death Smiles 1.1 is a fun survival challenge, but I never really tried playing it for score. The endless stream of points from the suicide bullets and skulls/crowns is fun, but it makes the game move really slowly because of all the slowdown. I get tired of it after a while, but it's fun to play every now and then.

Ketsui's X-Mode seems really good as well, but I haven't put much time into it yet. I'm looking forward to getting my new J360 so I can give it a real go.

These Cave games are endless. I only own and play three of them, but I feel like all these arrange modes and 1.1s and black labels and stuff take games that are already tons of fun to play and add a seemless endless replayability to them. I haven't even really messed with any of the arranged modes of the games yet.

I've been playing Deathsmiles 2 again given the season.

I think I like it more than the 1st. The bullet patterns (esp. bosses) are more satisfying. One thing I didn't like about the 1st game was how you either had no suicide bullets at all, or everyone spawned them (which it made it way too difficult for me). In DS2, even on level2 diff, there are some enemies (or attacks, they're not all suicide) that will launch them. This makes for an additional layer of bullets to evade, or blocking them with your familiar (so it makes switching shot and laser more 'tactical', since one will fix your familiar in place and the other will move it around). I know you can do this in DS1, but I just got overwhelmed by the amount of suicide bullets. Or maybe it's because I slightly changed the controls and they're much more manageable now - I guess I should try out DS1 and test it out again at some point.

------

DDP Resurrection is great. I liked the iOS version, but of course playing it with a stick is so much more satisfying. I can actually feel the movement speed difference btw shot/laser/power, heh. I usually only play power mode, since I really dislike auto-bombs (which isn't this an option???)

This was a nice way to start off the new year:

mushiallorig.jpg

Now to reduce the number of stupid deaths I make so I can bring my score up, and then work on Maniac some more. ;)

Got a capture card for Christmas, so I uploaded a few of my replays to youtube (in 720p) if anyone wants to check them out:

Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5 Maniac - 694.993.138 - Reco (Normal)
Mushihime-sama Futari 1.5 Original - 358.485.392 - Palm (Abnormal)
Mushihime-sama Futari Black Label Maniac - 860.720.964 - Palm
Mushihime-sama Futari Black Label God Mode 1cc - 2.858.427.405 - Reco
Akai Katana Shin - 3.117.198.720 - Type B

Spent a while messing with various encoding settings between AVIDemux and Sony Vegas too. I think my 1.5 Maniac video should look better than everything else I've uploaded, but to be honest I can barely tell the difference between them. They're all a little blurrier than I would like, but I don't know what to do to improve the quality any more, aside from maybe encoding at an insane bitrate (and my connection is too slow to upload massive files). I am not good with computer.

Checked out the Futari Maniac Black Palm replay because it is most relevant to my interests. Great replay man. I think the most I ever scored with the 360 port was somewhere in the 600 mils, so you've got a lot more optimization going on here. The only thing really separating you from the world record holders here is boss scoring it looks like, which means you're pushing the stages to the limit.

Something I noticed real quick on Stage 1, it's better to hold laser after the initial use of your multiplier on the mid-boss so that the gems that pop out during their death explosion have around x4000, x5000 value.

I liked the squid chaining you did in Stage 2. Haha, smart bomb on the first pattern of the second boss, that thing is a mess! No squid looping on this boss but I understand why, so hard to time correctly and the reward just isn't that good.

You've got all the scoring tricks on stage 3 down pat, this is an excellent example of how to get through that stage. Waiting until the last second before destroying the hives makes this one of my favorite game stages ever.

This video also reminds me of how lame Maniac Black's Stage 4 is. The caterpillars just do not spit out enough bullets to make the scoring interesting. It's an oddly low-scoring stage whereas 2, 3 and 5 all up the bullet counts.

Man you took no risks on Larsa at the end there, don't blame you either. Great run!

Will check out God mode and the Akai Katana Shin run when I have some more time.

Btw, you gonna do your top 10 list this year? I'm waiting til the last second.

Never knew that about the stage 1 mid-boss, nice tip. And yeah, a lot of the boss patterns in Black Label Maniac seem to clump together, they can get pretty messy when compared to 1.5. And I'm pretty awful against Larsa in just about every mode, so I tend to play it safe against her and bomb through difficult parts.

I'm going to post my top 10, but I'm still playing through a couple games so I'll probably wind up waiting until the last minute as well. Would be nice if the deadline were a little further away though.

edit:
Waiting until the last second before destroying the hives makes this one of my favorite game stages ever.

Oh, and this is what I really love about 1.5/BL Maniac and God Mode. Flooding the screen with bullets and then cancelling them all for massive score is like the most satisfying thing ever. I live for that screen flicker!

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
Finally got me a copy of the Rising Star version of DDP Dai Fukkatsu. I've been playing the game on my iphone for a while, and it's just not the same. I need to play DDP on a console.

Sadly, I just realized that since it's the 360 version, I can't use my stick (since I have a PS3 Hori stick). SAD FACE

Oh well. It'll be nice all the same to just play DDP Resurrection on a TV with a controller.

Picked up Akai Katana again, and after hitting the stage 5 boss, it kinda hit me in the face that the game seems to damn near force you to use the transformation mode (what's it called again? lol). Unlike Espgaluda's kakusei mode. I don't know why this surprised me, as the game overall seems awfully rough if you aren't using your meter.

I'm thinking about shelling out big bucks for Muchi Muchi Pork/ Pink Sweets bundle as I don't see it getting any cheaper, but it seems that the "Matsuri" dlc was only in a limited number of copies? So it is now impossible to get it?

edit: Found one on fleabay for 160 bucks that supposedly includes the code. So $30-$40 bucks pricier than usual. Worth it?

edit 2: oh found it for $140...now that's tempting.

I was about to suggests some eBay auctions, but I see you probably saw the same auctions. ;)
Forgot how much I paid for my LE, but some of those auctions even have Free shipping! Get it, you'll love it. Although I don't think I've used my DLC card yet personally. I need to get on that! O_O;

Oh my...
I totally forgot about the download card for Muchi Muchi Pork!
Checked my box and the card was there. But when I tried entering it it said I couldn't use it.
Looked it up and it turns out you need to enter it with a Japanese XBLA account.
Just made one and entered the code. :D

It's kinda weird. Got my 360 only 2 months ago and bought it mainly for Cave games.
Got all the ones that would work on my European system and put Mushi Muchi Pork & Pink Sweets aside as the games just didn't click with me.
So I played all the others instead.
Just been getting into Mushihimesama Futari which I just love, perhaps as much as Dodonpachi.

But now that this got me putting in Mushi again, I gave them a second try.
And even though I'm not very fond of the arcade versions at this point, I really enjoy the arranged versions of both games as well as the Matsuri version of Muchi. :)

$160 is quite a lot though. Not that I wouldn't pay it myself.
But it looks like I got a good deal for once when I bought both mushihimesama and MMP/PS together for about €160.

Creating a Japanese account also made me wonder about what kind of demos I might find on the store so I wandered around for a bit.
Noticed they have an indie section with several games I'd really like to get.
We don't seem to get any indie games over here for some stupid reason. (Belgium) :(

But to my surprise, I also came across the Raiden games and Otomedius Gorgeous among a couple other shooters that are available on the Japanese Store!
Since Raiden Fighters Aces EU is pretty much dead, I instantly ordered quite a bit of Japanese points and I'm awaiting their arrival.
Not sure what other game to buy as well.
Thinking about either Otomedius or Raiden IV, but I'm not sure if Raiden IV is all that good since Raiden III wasn't really to my liking.

If only Cave had some on demand games on there..... Would love to get Ketsui. :'(

I love Cave shooters, but I'm having a hard time understanding how to play/enjoy Guwange. Guwange I have no effin' clue what's happening, especially with the 360 arrange mode which seems to remove the shikigami aspect and turn autofire on?

Radiant Silvergun is Treasure, not Cave.

Have you tried Pink Sweets arrange mode? Apparently that is the one to play.

Yes I have. Only just today actually and I have to say it makes a huge difference in my enjoyment of the game.
Same as with Mushi Mushi Pork actually. Both arrange modes turn a, dare I say it, mediocre game (by Cave standards) into something very enjoyable.

As for Radiant Silvergun, it's weird.
I got it the week it was released on the Sega Saturn and loved it from the first minute.
Got quite good at it as well. But after buying it again on XBLA, I quickly found out that now I'm completely crap at the game.
Then again it's not your average shooter, so it will probably take some time to adjust to it again.
This might be the same for Guwange. Only played it a handful of times as I had too many games to play, but it's one that I'll have to put some time into for it to click with me.
I'm not worried though. Some of the best games I've ever played were like that at first. ;)

Oh, I just downloaded the demo for a game called Bullet Soul.
Seems to be quite a fun shooter so I'll pick it up one day.
But I just read the disc release of this game is region free, so I probably won't buy the digital version.

Are you sure they aren't just the demos? How many points they cost? Gotta order jpn cards, stat!

any tips on how to get to those alternative routes in DoDonPachi Resurrection on iOS? is there a handy guide anywhere? :D

and what the hell, this was released in europe for the 360 as well! gotta get me a copy as it is still cheap! :D

Sorry, my bad. Ok, so my original request stands then -- help me understand how the hell Guwange works, please? :)

It's quite easy, actually. Just use your shikigami most of the time, because

- he's invulnerable
- he's much faster than you and deals a ton of damage
- he can slow down bullets by touching them, and when you kill an enemy all the bullets he touched becomes gold - useful for both scoring and survival
- he can pick up gold and bonuses

The only drawback is, when the shikigami is out you have limited control over you character, you can only move left and right and you are much slower, so if you find yourself surrounded with bullets and can't block/cancel everything with the shikigami, switch to normal shooting and do some serious dodging :)

If you want to know more about scoring, just ask!

Just under 3000 Yen or 2000 points each. Edit: Should Bullet is 3,990 Yen or 2720 points...
There are a couple of others on there as well such as Radirgy.
I had no idea either. Imagine my surprise! :D

Muchi Muchi Pork, mediocre?

You just gave me a heart attack.

I'm typing this from an ambulance.

Sorry about that, first impressions and all. ;)
I'm not usually into cute em ups, so that might have played a big part as well.

you wont be able to download J only games(Raidens, Otomedius etc) from the jp marketplace if you have an european system.

on top of that to my knowledge, when it comes to Game On Demand, xbl marketplaces are ip locked, meaning you won't be able to download GoDs in Belgium from the jp marketplace...

I heard you can download get BulletSoul (which is region free to begin with) though, not sure why it works but seems like it does nonetheless.

Edit or maybe I missread, and you have a jp system, but still, I have a jp system myself and can't dl games on the jp marketplace because of my french IP...

That's strange because I could download the demos for the Raiden Compilation as well as Bullet Soul without any problem.

Just added 1400 points as well without any trouble, after having to put in some more details...

Now I'm awaiting for my second card to be delivered so I have enough points to try and see if I can actually buy them. :-/

well that's because IP and disc Region locking are only relevant to FULL Games (on demand)

Demos and dlcs always worked fine.

you don't even need to have points to try to dl a GoD and see if the disc iso region coding isn't matching you 360 or your IP is geo-blocked or you just don't have enough points and should be able to get the game otherwise... (3 different error messages)

Seems like you'll be able to get bulletSoul though...

I think in some rare cases the region locks seem to differ between retail and Games on Demand, it would be smart of both MS and publisher to release niche Japanese games as region free but I guess there must be complications about doing it that way. For one thing I think it screws Cave over in terms of trying to get game published in the US, I really have been hoping they can get some sort of deal instead of just in Europe but it must be a harder bar to cross.

Totally off topic but the shooter Revolver360 on XBLIG is only 80 pts now (dropped from 240 after the rules changed...it is 65MB so it was over the 80pt size limit before), the game has some seriously deep scoring mechanics...you literally rotate an axis of enemies with RT and LT and keeping them together gets higher multiplier. I have a leaderboard of about 600 mostly Japanese hardcore shooter fans, if you want it someone has to be online at the time you are playing it. there are a lot of shooting games on XBLIG but this might be my favorite.
