The Nintendo GameCube Appreciation and Collecting Thread.

So what are some of the most expensive games/accessories? I have MGS:TTS, the component cables, a couple of the Hori pads... already sold Ikaruga. Looks like the RE4 CE is still worth a decent amount.

I remember working at Superstore in Canada in 2004, for some reason we had HUNDREDS of copies of Eternal Darkness in our backroom and they were there since the game launched.

Our supervisor decided to throw them in the clearance bin for $1, im sad I never bought a copy.

At that time I bought that game at a Canadian Safeway for $10... that's how far it plummeted in value. It was just one of those weird bargain bins of software that made it into a store that doesn't usually carry stuff like that.

I was unpacking last weekend and discovered that I have a SEALED Skies of Arcadia.

I don't have much interest in it, maybe I should sling it to eBay?

My advice is to wait until you need that money.

The more time you wait, the more money you'll get imo.

Hey guys, does anyone know whether a Game Boy Player attachment from Japan would work on a US Gamecube? The start-up disc would be from the US btw.

^if i recall correctly i wanna say earlier in this thread it was said you need the same region disc as the player? could be wrong here

Accessories are probably the ASCII keyboard controller, Mario character themed controllers, Hori SNES controller, Panasonic Q Game Boy Player... Donkey Konga 3 with bongos maybe?

Ahhhh, I always wanted this back in the day when I wasa collector.

I am 90% sure that the GB Player hardware is region free, but you'll need an appropriate boot disc for your region to use it.
Best do some Googling though.

You are correct. You can import a Japanese GBP to match your console color, but you will need a startup disc from your region to play it.

I almost picked up a GB player about a week ago but it didn't have the disc so I didn't know if it was worth it at the time. I probably should have grabbed it in hindsight.

The disc is worth more than the actual hardware, I don't think they go for much more than $10 or $12 for the hardware alone.

Unless it's an imported color one or something.

No, 3rd party recievers don't work with Wavebirds.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Wavebird-Controller-Receiver-Nintendo-Gamecube-DOL-005-OEM-Grey-No-Controller-/181197042240?pt=US_Video_Game_Controllers&hash=item2a302f7240

This link right here is what you need.
Any Wavebird reciever will work with any controller (they're not paired), so you can pickup a replacement one on Ebay.

Is there any way to tell if a GCN is a DOL-001 or a DOL-101 if it's still in a sealed box (like the serial number or something)? I know someone who wants to sell me theirs for cheap, but I don't want to drop the money down if it's a DOL-101.

Yes:

(outside cardboard sleeve for the Wind Waker Limited Edition GCN)
gcn22auhc.jpg
(regular GCN back of the box)

Just look at the content table on the back of the box.

(obviously that's a PAL box, someone confirm NTSC boxes also have a contents table, please. can't find scans or pics on google)

Advise me GAF! I've been buying games in bundles and ended up with two copies of black label Paper Mario. One of them is in great condition, the other is pretty worn out but works fine.

The case has a few nicks, the coverart has an imprint of those little holes on the top right hand side, the manuals are in pretty good condition and the disk has a few "invisible" scratches. I'm not in need of cash or anything but I've been trying to reclaim shelving space. Do you think it's better that I hold onto the extra copy for a possible future sale or should I just flip it on eBay now? I tried looking at TYD prices and it seems like unless you have a really or sealed copy you're not going to get more than $30-$40. Thoughts?

Alright guys. I hope you can answer this for me. I have a disc only of Luigi's Mansion, and a spare GCN case. I downloaded the cover art for my version of Luigi's Mansion. I'd really like to know what kind of paper to use to give it that nice glossy look when it's in the case, and generally what place (Kinko's, Staples, etc.) is the best place to do it. I know at the least that I'll need 8x14 paper.

TTYD goes for closer to 25 used. I just grabbed an original black label (no "Best Seller" label) earlier this week for $26 including shipping in very good condition.

If you don't need the money I'd say hold on to it. It certainly won't go down in value anytime soon.

Also, someone put up complete copies of Timesplitters Future Perfect + Timesplitters 2 seemingly in pretty good condition on ebay for just $28 with free shipping. Needless to say I leaped at that, Future Perfect usually goes for more than that alone.

You don't need 8x14, just print without borders.

I'm still experimenting with paper. Copy paper sucks obviously, but thick photo paper doesn't work well for game cases either. Also don't get high gloss paper, soft gloss works better in my experience.

If anyone knows of any paper that's close to the originals I'd love to hear about it though.

I never traded a single GC game (or any other) ever. However, my copy of Mario Kart: Double Dash is beyond damaged. I lent it to a friend in college and he returned it scratched to hell. Which sucks, because it was one of my favorite GC games. ;_;

someone has scratched my simpsons hit and run disc, do repairs work?

I wouldn't mind knowing this either actually!

I got a mad score recently, the equivalent of $30 USD for:
1x white Wii with all the cords and stuff (and some cords I don't think even go with it like universal power supplies, etc lol)
1x Nintendo USB Wifi Connector
1x Gamecube Freeloader
1x Wii Freeloader (sadly doesn't work on the newer firmwares though)
1x Donkey Kong Jungle Beat NTSC Gamecube game
1x Donkey Konga 2 NTSC Gamecube game
4x Bongo controllers

The games are scratched to hell though. They only just play and take a few goes to get going. It's really uniformed scratching though as if they have been inside the Wii and playing while somebody shook the console, or something. I'll try add a photo soon.

Does resurfacing work? I wonder where I could get it done...

I have a method for visually assessing scratched disks. If I notice that a disk has scratches I also check the side of the disk with the art painted on it. If there's any scratches there, I flip it over and hold it up to a light. If light easily and clearly passes through a scratch, that disk is a dud. There's nothing that can be done because light passing through pretty much means that the data layer is damaged. It just so happens that scratching the data layer is easier to do from the side where the art is printed because the data layer is just underneath the art.

If you notice no scratches near the data layer there's no light coming through, the disk is pretty much salvageable through a good resurfacing. Many games have been brought back for me through resurfacing.

Ok, this thread has gotten me excited about buying one. It's the only console I missed in all the years buying consoles since the 2600. I've been surfing Ebay for a couple hours. What should I expect to pay for a console?

Digging thru my closet a few weeks back in preparation for a move. Found 3 Nintendo brand GameCube controller. 2 silver and 1 spice. All unopened. I seem to remember buying them thinking I had friends to play SSBM with.

...

I never got around to playing SSBM. Nor do I have friends. waa waa.

This is usually true, but I have several GC discs which have been resurfaced, and have no more visible damage (and you can't see light through them), but they still don't work. I don't know where the invisible damage is, but it seems to have killed them...

Thanks for the info! Naw they aren't very deep. It's just a lot of shallow scratching. Like it's been scratched by the Wii or something, cos it looks circular. I tried to take a photo but it doesn't show up. I think Jungle Beat is actually okay on closer inspection, it's just Donkey Konga 2 that is scratched up. It looks okay at first glance but then you see the hundreds of shallow scratches. Unless I get it under a good light I can't even see them. It probably would work in my old Gamecube but at the moment I'm using one I bought for a buck and I think the laser or disc motor is getting a little tired.

Disc rot maybe?

Perhaps the resurfacing was not done well? It's possible that people who don't take precautions when resurfacing a disk can actually cause enough excessive heat to burn the disk. I'm not sure if this burning is visible or not as I've had no problems of this sort.

I was kinda shocked to see some Japanese imports at the 2nd and Charles near me the other day in their Gamecube used section. Anyone want Zoids?

Was diggin through the storage unit the other day and I found my copy of Crystal Chronicles.

So happpyyyy. It's one of my favorite games of all time.
I've decided to track down a cheap GC and my rebuild GC collection.
These are the games I have in mind to buy

Killer7
Resident Evil 4
Viewtiful Joe
MGS Twin Snakes
Paper Mario
Alien Hominid
THUG 2
Wind Waker
PN03

PAL and NTSC saves live happily in unison on my MC (although I still have two because they're so starved for space!)

With a hardware mod(switch) a us system cant read a japanese formatted card and a japanese system cant read a us formatted card. It will ask to format it if you put it in the wrong one.

Then I wonder why anyone would do a hardware mod instead of simply using one of the disc-based region changers like the Freeloader.

It's a bit more convenient. You'll still need a separate memory card with a Freeloader if you're playing Japanese games on a North American system or vice-versa.

So that's a Japanese thing then? Since, as I mentioned, there's no issue with PAL and NTSC-U/C saves on a single MC.

Love the game as well, my friends and I managed to get all the equipment to play multiplayer and spent so much time with it. I recently bought a copy of the game for myself as well as a bunch of GBA's + cables, been playing with my little brother and sister.

GC games are gold! lol! I post stuff in the B/S/T thread, haven't sold a thing in months (even mint skies of arcadia gets no attention)... post up some GC games and my inbox blows up. lololol

So I decided to buy a gamecube for the bedroom. It's the only console I've never owned going back to the Atari 2600. I was able to get a Heineken Gamecube for 50 bucks off Ebay with a Wavebird. Just need to get some games. This thread has been great.
