The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

I've owned every console since the NES, minus the SNES (because of reasons), and I really have to say the Switch is quickly becoming my favorite console between them all. Absolutely love it, and being able to play Mario Kart everywhere is just magical.

Imagine you're Nintendo and you've made this thing that has consumers immediately excited about. Now imagine you're a 3rd party publisher and those same consumers want you to develop for this new thing but you've become accustomed to another thing you knew was safe.

3rd parties must be scared shitless at the thought of this things success. They might actually have to put effort against Nintendo's 1st party offerings.

Right now Epic is in a great place. There engine produces great looking Games on PC and PS4, but allows developers to easily scale down a solid port to Switch.

I mean ignoring the actual computing hardware, home consoles need less 'good designs' since all they really need to be is a relatively convenient box with TV out.

But PS2 is such a horrible console design. Two controller ports well after four player local multi had become standard elsewhere. Stupidly over engineered irregular design with those terrible little ridges all over it to collect dust and be hard to clean. A disc drive that is not only legendary for failing, but which sounded like a plane taking off when playing a game on CD format.

And PS3 was literally a laughing stock for its design for the first few years. George Forman Grill PS3, Fridge etc. It's actually pretty hard to have a really bad console design, but those two ticked quite a few boxes.

Your listed Switch issues like joycon desyncing and dock scratches are not design issues but launch hardware issues, and sillyness of non-core issues like joycon charging grip? And what you actually mean is UN-limited storage via cheap micro SD. Come on man.

Fun times. I even named my fat PS3, mini fridge.

Still holding on from buying it....

But once stuff like Fire Emblem, or so HELP ME GOD Shin Megami Tensei (and possibly, dare I dream, PERSONA??) are released, I don't think I wouldn't be able to resist any more.

What's to be scared shitless about? They've been getting by with Nintendo being completely out of the picture. If anything they've got a new platform to make some money on, so they'd be happy.

I hope they see it that way and bother to put resources towards it. And sooner rather than later...

Just a personal anecdote that my extended family on my wife's side who have never really been into gaming are talking about the switch and saving up for one we played Mario Kart at the house the other day and the whole family was gathered around the table and every singe family unit wanted a Switch. I was shocked actually. Thing is gonna be huge.

It truly feels a bit like the Wii Age all over again, where people you never hear talking about games talk about Nintendos newest system. It's a bit frightening how well known the Switch already is and I am not really sure why. Sure Zelda is amazing, Mario Kart is huge and the Switch is a good system but if that was all it takes, then why didn't the N64 or GameCube succeed? Both had an amazing exclusive games library at their time...

So it has to be something different than games, I guess it's the hardware in the end, the ingenuity of the system, being able to take it with you, plug it in the dock, play however you want. That seems to appeal to a very broad audience and even triggers people that usually don't care for videogames. -If that really turns out to be true, and if those fellows buy the Switch in the long run, then the system might be highly interesting for third parties as well and we'll see them port a lot of games over in the future.

(I couldn't care less about them though, as I will always play the superior version of their games on my PC instead, however I am really anxious for all the great Japanese third party titles that will soon hit the Switch)

My favorite console of all time is still the n64, it was also the first console I bought with my own money. It will be very hard for Nintendo to match its impressive exclusive title library but after playing the best game of all time on the Switch I have high hopes. The Switch is my second most favorite console of all time, very close behind it sits the PS2, GCN and PS3.

It's also probably the first Nintendo console to have entries in those franchises out within its first two months. People seem to forget that timing of those things is absolutely crucial. The Wii U got MK8 18 months after it launched, once it was cemented as a dead console. The Switch got two of the best rated games of the past decade within its first two months, while it's still known as the hot new sold out console.

What would you rather buy?

True, but if you look at the N64, Mario Kart 64 was almost a launch title(much like with the Switch) and the system also had Mario 64 at launch which was unbelievable huge. Zelda OoT took another year and a half to be released, yes, in between were Goldeneye and other gems though. The N64 was completely insane back then, yet it didn't even sell 40m in the long run.

The Situation with the Switch is almost reversed, instead of M64 we got Zelda and instead of Zelda later on we get Mario Odyssey at a later time(though its impact will be huge as it still happens in the first year of the system).

I guess the N64 would have been more successful if it weren't for the overwhelming support the PS1 got. The Switch is now fighting for customers in a class of its own without much competition, the PS4 isn't really something that competes with it, neither is the Xbox One or the PC, or even other handhelds.

I get that same feeling from the Switch. As with anything it could all still crash and burn but I wonder if the Switch continues to be a big success if Sony is going to come up with their own take on it and if that might just be a new market going forward.

I wonder what sort of size you could get a PS3 down to these days, actually.

I think one oddball problem with the notion of a Sony Switch is the Dualshock, oddly - in that the Dualshock form factor is so inherently tied to the Sony ecosystem, but I'm not sure I can see a way you can make a joycon-like device that retains that aesthetic.

I think the biggest problem for Sony with a Sony Switch is that they either stop competing in the console high-end where they currently dominate and have no reason to jeopardise it, or they fragment resources and development and might as well call it the Vita 2 because it will be dead in the water.

Can't have it all, I guess.

Ironically enough, Nintendo paved their own way by going on a underpowered console route since 10 years ago. It paid off.

That's a good point, I had forgotten that MK64 launched so soon after the N64 launch. There are a bunch of interesting parallels there, good catch. Very small amount of launch day titles with one super incredible launch game is probably the most interesting comparison, in that it worked wonderfully for the Switch. That would be a neat comparison to make a year or so down the line.

The Switch is 3-4x stronger than a PS3, so you can definitely make a PS3 which is Switch or smaller sized. The Vita was basically a Sony Switch and they had no need for any Dualshock with it, so I don't see why they wouldn't go with a similar form factor.

Of course the obvious reason why Sony would never do a Sony Switch is because it would still be their secondary device, when Nintendo's Switch is only going to be successful because it's their primary device. So no one should be expecting Sony to be copying Nintendo there.

The only thing I could see them doing is rebranding a Vita with better remote play and emphasizing remote play over anything else.

The problems or concerns were never the console/hardware itself.

It was the price, price of accessories and if there were enough games.

As it stands right now there are more than enough games
assuming people aren't elitists and scoff at indie titles.

Agree. Didn't expect this from Polygon.
This article describes exactly what owning a Switch is like, as long as you take advantage of its various use cases. Do you have a hard time believing people don't play Mario Kart on the go, sharing joy-cons, and that it can be a satisfying experience? What part of the article feels like a lie to you?

Same problems still exist from a technical perspective. It's still far behind current gen consoles, which sure, I'm sure downgrading will work on some games, but we're only a few years from PS5, Scorpio might become the defacto Xbox console after some price drops, and we're seeing alot of advancements in GPUs for PC. I feel like it's still very much going to be a console for mostly Nintendo made games and indies sprinkled in.

Switch got me back into gaming just when I was about to quit it. Haven't turned on my ps4 since I got the Switch. I prefer convenience over graphics. So any games moving forward, Switch will be my main. I just don't want to play on a ps4 anymore.

I still return to my PS4 for FF14 but that's pretty much it. I still buy certain releases but I used to also ignore PS4 and XB1 a lot for my 3DS so I guess Switch is no different in that department.

What's the deal with this? It's the exact same for me (except I skipped the ps4/Xbox but have a PC).

I find it kind of crazy I'm not the only one. I thought I was done with games. Nothing could hold my interest anymore. But here I am now. With a switch and many dozens of hours into Zelda, with 5 other games in shrink wrap waiting to be excitedly played and about 5 more games pre ordered.

There were 3 switches in the theater when I went to see Guardians. Some kids were playing 2 player Mario kart in the row in front of me while we were waiting for the previews to start. Shit warmed my heart.

This resonates with me on many many levels. I'm glad I traded both my PS4 consoles and Wii U for this system as I really don't foresee me or my family needing any other gaming device for the foreseeable future. We just need a good stream of good software now which I'm sure will come!

Same with me.

I love my PS4, but I'm having a really hard time being tied down to a TV. I love the fact that I can take my Switch out at work on my lunch, play Zelda for 30-40 minutes and then continue at a later time.

This part honestly. I finally had a go at MK8D this weekend with a few freinds and while it was nice to see a Nintendo game with such clean IQ, the shared Joycon was simply uncomfortable - even with the plastic sliders on.

I think the concept is far more compelling than the actual reality: a gimmick, in a word, that's nice once, but doesn't bare repeated play - a Nintendo hallmark.

Well, people love to be stupid.
For me it's still an overexpensive hardware with no games.

Sigh, these drive by posts are getting old.

Call it over expensive or whatever you want but stop saying it has no games. It has plenty of games and two out of three highest rated of this generation so far.

Imo $300 is perfectly fine for the system but yes, the accessories are way over priced.

15+ hours of single joycon Mario Kart played in my office, zero complaints, personally zero cramps from me. Fantastic to have 4 player gaming with having only bought 'one' additional controller.

I found it cramped without the straps, but no issues with the straps added.

Thats a sign that Nintendo is winning when you have those insecure posts 😄

Not gonna lie

I pretty pumped for E3 this year thanks to Nintendo

Ill be keeping a close eye on Sony though. From Software gonna light shit up im thinking

It changes the marketplace. At this point it would be shocking if Xbox One doesn't fall to third in the console market this generation. Very different than the last 5 years.

I will see if I agree tonight. My boy picked one up for me in PA as I was not finding it in Jersey. He works with my wife so she will have it when she gets home tonight. Zelda should be here by then thanks to Prime 1 Day. MK8 arrives Thursday.

I have to say I see some comments in the thread about finding it hard to sit on the couch to play. I have been facing that a lot myself the past few months. I think it is a combination of I am 42 and trying to focus on doing productive things (I do illustrations and write) but also I am married and it does seem pretty damn selfish to force my wife upstairs on her own while I takeover the TV to play.

As weird is this may sound even if I have the Switch in my hands, we can still be in the same room enjoying eachothers company. I am curious to see how much of a difference, if any, that makes with things and if I do play more as a result.

This is exactly what I love about the Switch, as well as the Wii U to a lesser extent. It just makes it easier on you and those around you to insert gaming time into your life. I sit on the couch with my wife watching TV while I play on the Switch, and then when we go up to bed I bring it to play a bit after she falls asleep. I think it'll be a huge gamechanger for married folks and parents especially.

And I'd say the
Vita
is the best of the bunch.

Vita? Really? The placement of the right joystick so close to the x button instantly invalidates its place on that list. Add that to the horrific idea of the rear touchpad, and it's not even close to being the best designed.

The Vita with it's dinky non-clickable analogue sticks, tiny face buttons, terrible back touchpad, lack of L2/R2 buttons, propriatory memory cards and poor OLED screen is supposed to be the best ?

Well, I don't agree at all.

Looking at the games released so far I am noticing a pattern of "sandbox" type games. Games which can essentially be played forever. The per-game level of depth in the releases slated for this year is absolutely incredible.

These aren't games like prey that you play and beat and move on. These are games you will play for years and years and years.

Breath of the wild
Mario kart 8 deluxe
The binding of Isaac
Puyo puyo tetris
Minecraft
Skyrim
Arms
Splatoon 2
Disgaea 5 complete
Ultra street fighter II

The switch will have the greatest library of evergreen titles I think we will ever see on a console or handheld when it is done.
