The Nintendo Switch has become the system people love to love

I honestly just want as many games on this thing as humanly possible. I'll take the convenience over power any day of the week.

This is the killer part. Nintendo can entirely swerve the 'who's the most powerful' and have people want to play on a clearly lower powered device because of how it lets you play

After using the controllers with people playing MK8 and seeing another friend play through some of BTOW, I think i'm picking up a switch today. I really should play through more Persona 5, but damn BOTW just seems so fun.

The Switch is already one of my favorite consoles ever. Crazy to think I've already played two of the best games ever made on it (and ON THE GO no less) two months into the system's lifespan.

Yup. All the 4K textures in the world isn't going to mean shit if I only have a couple hours week to play the game. Give me a downgraded Switch port any day.

If you think about it, I am also convinced the Switch will be the real 3DS successor, however... Nintendo didn't seem to be that convinced in the first place. Just look at their shipment numbers, they shipped enough systems for a WiiU-Successor but by far not enough for a real 3DS successor, they had to double production within the systems launch week to at least satisfy demand to some part.

It's a bit sad to see it this way, as it shows that Nintendo had lost faith into their fans with the WiiU, it's understandable though, the WiiU bombed big time and cost Nintendo dearly, they produced lots of systems that just wasted away in storage facilities and store shelfs. Sales wise I fully expect the Switch to sell at least the amount the 3DS did, probably much more and perhaps in reach of the Wii or even NDS. Only time will tell and we'll see if Nintendo puts all their effort into this one plattform, if they do, I don't have any reason to not expect the system to do very very well.

Nintendo wasn't convinced of the DS being the Gameboy successor. Third pillar and all that. They were hedging their bets.

I know Mario Kart is fantastic but damn dude.

It's off to a great start especially considering the two biggest games out for it are Wii U ports. Hopefully next month at E3 we'll get to see more games made from the ground up for Switch that are in the pipeline.

It's the first true next generation of console game platform. It's taken the idea of console gaming and expanded on it. It's not just another unit you plug into a tv and play.

Nobody is calling the Switch a 3DS successor, they keep calling it "what the Wii U should have been."

You seem to have missed the announcement earlier in the year where Kimishima decided that mobile games would be a new stream of revenue for Nintendo, so it is no longer just for advertising Nintendo games.

Yes, Pokémon Go drove sales for their other Pokémon games and the hardware it was on, I know that. How does that guarantee a Nintendo Vita would have done better than 3DS?

Plenty are calling it a 3DS successor. Seriously now do you think Pokémon will not come to this system?

There's your answer. It's that simple.

Mobile games were announced as that, it's nothing new. SM Go is not entirely free.

While that's awesome and I agree, I think you're gonna have trouble convincing some of the "hardcore" to give up their shinies for portability.

If all DLC came tied to $13 figurines, I'd consider all DLC to be free
i wouldn't say there is TONS....come on man. no launch system has tons of software within the first two months
The funny thing previous and around PS4/XBO launches whole GAF was wishing for ports/HD remaster etc. non stop. Actually that's how it usually goes when new hardware is released.

For some reason Switch doesn't get the same pass early on and some folks get offended by suggesting that some games could or should end up on they system.

If the next pokemon and fire emblem etc aren't switch games they might as well sell the company.

It's marketed as a console hear handheld in Japan.

If it's not the successor to both the 3ds and the wiiU it destroys the entire purpose of the console.

Power is overrated, especially here because this is an enthusiast site. Netflix is proof that people will choose convenience over power. The bitrate on physical discs is better than on streaming and yet streaming is king. Switch is the sweet spot where graphics are good enough to choose it over anything else on pc/PS4/Xbox because of the convenience factor. This is one of the reasons why I said Switch is the future before it was released.

The next Fire Emblem has already been announced as a Switch title. And hopefully this week we see the rumored Pokemon Stars announcement.

It's only marketed as a console to make sure people know it will get console games, not just handheld games.

Is the Switch worth it if you don't really have anyone to play with?

Been wondering if I should go with a Switch or a new PC this summer.

Edit - Just wandering if I need IRL friends who have a Switch to enjoy it like the above posters seem to do.

Really depends on what kinda games you like. For instance, I haven't really enjoyed BOTW or Mario Kart (the items and the lack of any meaningful unlocks have kinda put me in a drip-feed state with that one). So most of my fun's been from the various indie games on the eShop. Mr. Shifty is loads of fun (but has frame rate issues that should be patched "soon"), TumbleSeed is great for short bursts, I hear Graceful Explosion Machine is good too.

The only problem I have is that a lot of the indie games I've played thus far are only good for short bursts and not long play sessions like Mario Kart or Zelda. There are some exceptions to that "rule" though. Wonderboy is fantastic for longer sessions and can easily take you a few hours to beat. FAST RMX is another racing title that can be fun, especially since there are some unlockables there.

Im a big nintendo nerd but switch is what im trully hoping Sony will do.

Vita was amazing and the fact that they couldnt deliver the same software output as ps4 was such a bummer.

Really hope tha videogames become portable devices.

Zelda in the living room - while kids play and watch tv .. something snapped. I realized I could play games.. real. games. without having to sneak away to my gaming den.

My mind went ablaze with the options if Ninty and 3rd parties get their shit together.

I would have no problem choosing multi plats on this. time and time again
Agreed 100%!

That was the case with WiiU too though, the Off-TV Play streaming had some range issues but it worked great if you didn't leave the room and just kept playing on the gamepad when the TV was occupied.

Switch takes the concept further though and I think that's why it's so popular. Handheld, stationary, same games, carts, local multiplayer on the go with no added accessories.

Not going to happen with the chase to 4k

Damn what? BotW and MK8D are easily two of the best games ever made. Can't remember a system that had two games of that caliber two months in.

And the system's library is only going to get better from here.

I love it. As much as it's been thrown around, it's definitely the portability I appreciate it the most for. Can't wait to play a fully fledged made-for-the-hardware RPG on it.

Shovel Knight is also a great 1P package.

Tabletop mode has been a great way to play MK8D and Snipperclips with my family. It works well enough for short play sessions so I don't even bring the dock anymore.

If you want an indie with huge play sessions then I'd suggest Binding of Isaac, unless you've already put in 600 hours on other systems. I played about 120 hours of Zelda and then basically nothing but Binding of Isaac for another 120 hours, with a few sessions of MK8D online with GAF. It's the first time I've actually played BoI and I'm hopelessly addicted.

Hard to pay $40 for something you've seen on steam sales for 5$.

And some people like me call it as a successor to both Wii U and 3DS as we knew that ever since the NX was leaked as a hybrid.

Kimishima said this about the Switch when it was just the NX:
Respected Japanese paper Nikkei asked Nintendo president Tatsumi Kimishima what kind of game machine the NX was. “At this current stage, I’m not able to say,” Kimishima replied. “However, it’s not merely the successor to the handheld 3DS or stationary console Wii U. This will be hardware that’s been made with a new way of thinking. I’d like to announce more particulars regarding its specs and how it works another time this year.”

As for the mobile games, they weren't initially announced as a new revenue stream for Nintendo. It's as you said, Iwata did it to try to bring exposure of Nintendo IP to mobile so that they could try to get new consumers to buy Nintendo's dedicated gaming systems.

It was recently Kimishima said this:
iLKcyRw.jpg

That's a lot different now to their initial intentions because they can't ignore how much money they can make from mobile now.

Was planning to buy one at launch and couldn't find it anywhere, now I've decided to wait until August I am totally sold on the portability since I rarely play games on tvs anymore

That doesn't prevent it from being a successor to he 3DS. You realise that right?

That's not recent at all Kimirishma reconfirmed iwata's goal in regards to mobile around that time also. Did you miss that?

I get the feeling people want to try to sell the Switch as the new Wii where everybody is wanting one.

I believe the truth is the opposite. I personly love to play games, even collect them but Im just emberassed to play them in public places (train, metro etc).
This is how I feel. I love my Switch but I can't bring myself to play games in a public place. It's too weird and embarrassing for me.

It reminds me of the large switch people went through from desktops to laptops.

A laptop could never really replicate the power nor the price of a desktop, but for most people it was good enough and they were willing to sacrifice those things for the convenience of portability.

I get that same feeling from the Switch. As with anything it could all still crash and burn but I wonder if the Switch continues to be a big success if Sony is going to come up with their own take on it and if that might just be a new market going forward.

That's exactly what it feels like to me.

Starting to take mine into bed with me for MK8 and Zelda sessions. Relatively short bursts of gaming, getting a little bit more of Zelda explored.. it's great for that. Spending more time with the girlfriend as a result (she always watches stuff in the bedroom at night while I usually play Rocket League or whatever).

Great system, graphically very capable, I would buy many third party games here even with less amazing graphics (just not dodgy ass framerates) if they came out for the system. Indies feel like an absolute must..
