Doesn't that mean everyone should have it then? I though there was only 1 feed available that different countries just put their commentators and branding on.

That is correct. FOTA control the broadcasting on a single feed that is sold to all the tv stations worldwide.

Cool. I guess it's just up to the national carriers to put it on a HD channel then. The channel here it's on at the moment is HD, so we should be good to go. Sweet.

Looks like Sky have let this one out a bit early but great news for fans worldwide.
Formula 1 will be broadcast for the first time in true 'native' High Definition this year, after Sky Germany announced on Tuesday its improved coverage plans for 2011.

AUTOSPORT revealed in November that Formula 1 chiefs were close to giving the green-light to full HD coverage of the sport this year - and had even ordered the equipment it would need to do so.

There has not yet been any official confirmation of the HD plans from F1 commercial supremo Bernie Ecclestone, but Sky Germany all but made it official on Tuesday when it revealed its own plans.

After clinching an extension to its F1 broadcast deal late last year, Sky Germany said that its German, Austrian and Swiss viewers would be able to watch the whole of the 2011 season in 'native' HD.

Brian Sullivan, CEO of Sky Germany, said: "The broadcast of Formula 1 in true HD is something that millions of racing fans in Germany, Austria and Switzerland have yearned for."

Sky would not be able to offer true HD coverage of F1 if Formula 1's own official feed was not broadcast in High Definition – so its announcement suggests that Formula One Management has informed them that it is ready with its ambitions.

A number of broadcasters have shown F1 on their own HD channels – but this has previously been simply an upscaled version of the Standard Definition signal for improved picture clarity.

Ecclestone has said several times in the past that HD coverage of the sport would come in when he felt broadcasters were ready to make the investment worthwhile.

He told AUTOSPORT last year: "I said to the broadcasters, are you going to get more viewers, will more people watch F1 because it is HD or will less people watch it because it isn't? They really need to have a check and see who has got the right televisions.

"I don't think the average public realise that it is not the television, they have to have something to receive it as well. It is like producing a colour signal when people only have black-and-white sets."

I feel bad for Legard...but he was a bit rubbish, wasn't he?

Still, surprised Brundle has taken the lead role. We'll see how that works out.

Hispania set to sue Chandhok

Hispania Racing are set to take legal action against former driver Karun Chandhok "for not fulfilling his contract", according to a report.

Chandhok drove for the Spanish outfit in the first 10 races of the 2010 season, but he was replaced by reserve driver Sakon Yamamoto at the German Grand Prix. At the time, everyone thought it was part of the team's rotation policy and Chandhok would return later in the season. However, he failed to race again.

Team principal Colin Kolles told India's Deccan Chronicle that contrary to media reports, Chandhok was "suspended" after the British GP.

"When he signed an agreement with us for the 2010 season, Karun made a lot of promises on paper," Kolles said. "But, he failed to fulfill his obligations. We waited for some time, but we didn't have any other choice than suspending him at the German GP. We, however, did everything diplomatically. We didn't make it public. Since then, Karun was never in the team's radar."

Hispania confirmed last week that Indian Narain Karthikeyan will take one of their seats next year, but they are yet to decide on their number two driver.

"A lot of drivers are showing interest for a vacant seat. We are going to pick the best out of them. Our target for the season is to establish Hispania as the best newcomers. We are confident of doing it," said Kolles.

Sooo... he promised some money, couldn't pay, so they stuck a slower, richer driver in and never looked at him again? Does that seem like what happened?

Its been confirmed for 2011 by FOM this morning.
Formula 1's move to true High Definition television coverage in 2011 has been officially confirmed by the sport's broadcast chiefs, AUTOSPORT can reveal.

Amid intense speculation over the last 24 hours about F1 television plans for this year, after Sky Germany announced that it was going to broadcast in HD, Formula One Management has now affirmed that all channels that have a deal to show the sport will be given an HD feed.

After detailed investigations over the winter into whether it can deliver a proper HD service, plus checks that new equipment that it has brought in will be ready on time, AUTOSPORT has learned that FOM informed broadcasters on Tuesday that it was going ahead with 'native' HD coverage.

FOM has invested in equipment that is good enough to ensure that it can download the data to broadcasters at a high quality rate of 42MB of data per second - and the broadcast will be in 1080i resolution.

All trackside cameras will be full HD, but due to the technical complexity of on-board cameras these will be remain upscaled Standard Definition cameras for now.

Several broadcasters have already confirmed their plans to show true HD coverage in 2011 - including Sky Germany and Globo in Brazil - with other channels set to follow suit immediately.

AUTOSPORT understands the BBC is almost certain to show the High Definition coverage on its HD channel, and then downscale the signal so it is suitable for its terrestrial channels.

The British broadcaster has so far not made public its broadcast plans for this year, however, but says announcements about what it intends to do will be made in the next few weeks.

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone said last year that the move to HD coverage would only come when broadcasters felt the public were really ready to receive it, and that he could guarantee the quality would be good enough.

"We don't want to broadcast unless people want it," Ecclestone told AUTOSPORT at the Canadian Grand Prix. "I asked in England, the BBC, about it - how many people can receive it? They said about 20 per cent of the viewers who watch F1. Then I want to make sure that what we produce is top quality."

Suweeeet

edit: Hahaha just saw this on another forum.

Jonathan Legard – a short tribute.

Down the hill,
And towards turn one,
Jenson BUTT-on,
Pushes on.

Pole for Ferrari,
Is going to be tough,
Here comes Fernando,
IS THIS GOOD ENOUGH?!

Webber is flying,
But so too is Vettel,
As Nico Rosberg,
Is joining the battle.

THERE'S PROBLEMS THERE!
Is that a Ferrari?!
Nope, it’s actually,
Jaime Alguersuari.

SOOT-il has lost it,
And KOO-bica too!
That was the last thing
They needed to do!

I’m sorry there Martin,
You'll just have to wait,
I've just been informed,
That Petrov is eighth.

Hamilton wins!
He'll surely be happy,
But will he be champion,
Come Abby-Dabby?

Jake Humphrey is still gonna be there right?

From the article:

Jake Humphrey will continue to present with Ted Kravitz and Lee McKenzie reporting from the pit lane

I thought Lee McKenzie was leaving as well. I always hate those strained interviews with the retired drivers mid-race.

I watch F1 on TSN in Canada, which uses the BBC feed, so I'm pretty happy about HD finally coming. The only annoying thing is the lack of a pre-race show. Not sure why they couldn't just use the BBC's pre-race.

I think the red endplates are worse, but the Lotus logo right beneath the Renault one does not make a pretty picture. A great idea, but they have stuffed it up.

The yellow lettering on the tyres clashes with the gold too. Just a bad effort.

Yep. Either go for a more yellow gold to match the tires, or get rid of all that red, or both.

Same here, I'd love if they just bit the bullet and used the whole thing. Usually it's at ungodly morning hours anyway, all they'd lose is a few more rerun slots.

edit: And while you're at it TSN, grab the BBC practice broadcasts too!

Not sure how this Lotos livery can be legal. JPS cigarettes still get sold. Remember when last year Ferrari had to remove that Marlboro like symbol from their livery?

AndyD said:
Where is the JPS logo?

It doesn't really matter. Ferrari didn't use the Marlboro logo either. The historic black and gold Lotus livery was due to JPS sponsoring and everyone still remembers that.

From what i know even subliminal cigarette advertisement is illegal nowadays in some countries.
