I was just thinking last night about replaying Monkey Island. Now I can do it on my phone.

I tried the initial version of ScummVM but it was a bit clunky, hoping this newer version is better.

That's pretty much exactly it. It took me a while to get to grips with the way iTunes does things. The fact that it doesn't look at the files and their locations, but builds a database from those files and makes a sort of snapshot. For me working in IT and being a logical thinker, just threw me for a loop.

Once I got the idea of how it worked though, and had the file structure the way I wanted it. It has been awesome ever since. I love throwing an album in and it rips it straight to the file structure, artist then album name, with album art etc. It's a beautiful thing. I'm really looking forward to not having to do it in Windows though. The Macbook my wife buys can't come soon enough.

Or Apple could release a Linux client... But I can probably keep dreaming on that one.

sorry, i phrased that very poorly. Can you use Windows to add new books? It'd be great if I could read my .pdf case studies on the phone!
 
A few questions before I run out and buy an ipod touch.

Can it play Broken Sword 2 as well?

Do I have to install and use iTunes to put my music on it?

Does it get annoying having to take the device out of your pocket everytime you want to change tracks or volume, i'm used to buttons and always felt the touch screen was a gimmick that would get annoying over time.

Also, how is the battery life and internet browsing?

ScummVM will play anything the bigger versions can, I think.

Yes.

No, not really.

Battery is fine, but drains a lot quicker with wifi on.

Appears Stanza only supports Macs at this stage, Windows version is "coming".
 
Has anyone made a game similar to Dead Rising's photo mode? iPhone program lords, is it possible?

People who bitch about iTunes don't seem to get that it's database software. Once you've built a smart playlist with queries, it tends to make more sense to IT guys.

I have a smart playlist that pulls a top 100 out of a larger playlist of 400 songs based on rating and if I've heard that song in the past 3 weeks. Try doing that with drag and drop.

I just pick and choose the album I want to listen to.

Oh, I'd like to pimp a crossword puzzle game on the app store. it's called 2 Across and it's 6 bucks. I bought it last night and it's super easy to download crossword puzzle from a bunch of sources like the Onion, the Philly Inquirer, Village Voice, etc...

The interface for entering text is really simple and the views for seeing hints and the grid are nice and clean. I don't know if anyone checking this thread is a crossword junky, or even has a passing interest in them, but it's really slick. check it out.

just think of it as like editing software. all your media files remain in the background untouched and you just manipulate all your playlists upfront with a ton more flexibility. also, every album can just be played if you just want to listen to it without using a playlist. win-win.

yeah, and you can still just pick an album or artist and play it whenever you want.

Already have a PC (3 of them actually).

Requiring a Mac for SDK development is short sited of Apple in my opinion, they are severly cutting down the number of possible hobby developers in hopes that some of them might buy Macs.

With all due respect, fewer "hobby developers" clogging up the App Store with crap sounds like a good thing to me.
 
I think requiring the Mac for the iphone SDK at the moment has less to do with shortsightedness and much more to do with limited resources. They've got their hands full just getting the SDK running stable on one platform, as apparent by the number of bugs reported in the various SDK builds. Plus, the number of developers who have been willing to develop on a Mac already reaches into the hundreds of thousands, based on the number of iphone SDK downloads thus far.

A shortage of developers isn't their problem right now.

Considering Aurora Feint is the App/Game I've played the most, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree.

Exactly. One of the few decent apps. The rest are well... pointless or poorly executed. Just be happy iPhone/Touch works with PC. I remember when the first iPod came out in 2001. All my friends loved it, but it was Mac only. They were like wtf Apple this will never do well. Rest assured Apple knows what decisions to make :lol

I'm not sure I'd call them hobby developers at this point. It's clear they have a business model in mind for Aurora Feint.

As for the SDK being Mac only, you can buy a Mac Mini for $599. Add in the $100 for the software license, and you still have a cheap gaming dev kit.

If your game is good you'll make the money back and then some.

Lock and then unlock your phone, or just reset it entirely. It should then start working.
 
question about stanza:

i imported a bunch of txt and rtf ebooks from my computer, and they show up as 'null' for the title on the ipod. can i change the titles of these books from the phone at all? the documentation says i can but it's missing.

Edit: Graal uses the acceleromater to move your character. A little buggy and the framerate drops drastically.

iwallpaper is just a hub for downloading wallpaper.
 
I can't believe you have to pay for a firmware update. When is the ipod touch going to come shipped with 2.0?

:lol yeah, i think we were all a little surprised and dissapointed by how much junk and duplication of apps made it to the app store.

Before it opened, people were initially worried about Apple being too strict a gatekeeper, but now it's obvious that they're being really lax when it comes to letting in new apps.

reeeeaaaaaalllly lax.

In a way, I wouldn't have minded if Apple said the SDK was 500 bucks and required Steve Jobs to personally use your app for a week before allowing it on the app store :\

So I took it upon myself to jerry-rig up a solution. I’ve created a small bookmarklet that grabs all links in a page, and forces them to… um, open in a new window. Wait! Don’t throw that tomato at me yet! Normally this would be absolute madness to unleash this upon the web, but iPhone in its infinite simplicity treats target=”blank” as a trigger to open a new tab. Tiny annoyance solved!
