People who bitch about iTunes don't seem to get that it's database software. Once you've built a smart playlist with queries, it tends to make more sense to IT guys.

I have a smart playlist that pulls a top 100 out of a larger playlist of 400 songs based on rating and if I've heard that song in the past 3 weeks. Try doing that with drag and drop.

I'm baffled how I didn't know about Smart Playlists. When did this come out? Also, with iPhone/iTouch (iPhone 3G in my case) does iTunes keep track of what you have listened to on your iPhone? So if I say pick something I haven't heard in 3+ weeks, will that be only if I haven't heard it on my PC or will that include my iPhone?

If Wikipedia is to be believe, iTunes 3.0. July 17th, 2002.

Also, with iPhone/iTouch (iPhone 3G in my case) does iTunes keep track of what you have listened to on your iPhone? So if I say pick something I haven't heard in 3+ weeks, will that be only if I haven't heard it on my PC or will that include my iPhone?

Yes. All song play information is reflected when you sync. It will increment play counts, modify last played and last skipped dates (if applicable), etc.

Easiest way to see this: Make a new smart playlist with the only rule being "Podcast is false". Limit to 100 items selected by most recently played. There's your 100 most recently played songs. Now sync your iPod/iPhone, play some stuff on the device (remember that the song has to finish playing to count as a "play" in iTunes), sync again, and then check the playlist once more.

smart playlist have been around for at least 4 years... probably longer

And, yes, iTunes keeps tracks of songs played on an iPod or iPhone and repopulates the smart playlists with this new info when you sync the device back to your computer.

edit. beaten.

to try to make this post useful after the fact: Buy Enigmo on the app store. I haven't plugged it enough. it's frigging amazing.

I must be missing something with Graal Zone, the single player training bit worked, but the only line portion is just one area with nothing to kill and nothing but people running around trying to stab one another (you can't).

Anyone have a different experience? I noticed that they said the launch party is this weekend, but their has to be something else to this game till then....doesn't their?

Actually if you have a paused game of MotionX then you can go into the iPod and start a song, then resume the game and your iPod music will play.

I can't seem to get it to work. I play a song, start motionx, double click the home button to resume the song, then restart motionx and the music keeps fading out.

Am I missing something?

:lol apple is fucked, apps have been cracked already.

Not really, apps been cracked for a while, the majority of the buying populace will still buy games. Just like every other form of digital entertainment, the "industry" will just move the fuck on

not the best thing to admit on the forum.

I just bought de Blob. I loved the freeware PC game, so there's no doubt I'll love this one.

I'll give impressions tomorrow, as I'm gonna wait to play it 'til later.

Edit: Oh, wow, Apps Store got hacked already? That sucks. Oh well. Shouldn't hurt too terribly much.

Pet peeve #238:

Is there a way to load images onto my iPhone without iTunes wanting to "optimize" those images when sync'ing?

Perfectly fine images are turned into utter shit when they're transferred to the iPhone. WHY?

Let me read my Shin Angyo Onshi, damn you Apple.
Sadly, after some googling I've seen reports of people loading full resolution pics onto their iPhone using some Jailbreak methods. It seems that iPhone will still rescale the photo and it'll still be unreadable.

There's an app in the AppStore called FileMagnet that will allow you to upload photos to your iPhone w/o using iTunes, but the companion program you need [in order to upload stuff] is Mac-only I think.

It is. Tiger + Leopard.

Stanza got an update!

-Added ability to edit title and author of a book
-Changed behavior so that when Stanza is launched, last open book is automatically opened
-Fixed bug that might make Stanza crash if books had no title set

SportsTap got an update too.
I recommend this app for a fast and easy way to view daily scores.

Using both and both had great updates.

how come nobody told me how awesome moiton x poker is... best value on the app store.

Is my sarcasm meter broken? Everyone's been pimping Motion X poker in this thread.

As I said before, it combines the gimmicks of waggle and achievement whoring into a single, awesome package.

I love Stanza. Seriously, Stanza and a Puzzle Quest iPhone port, and I wouldn't need anything else.

Just got around to playing de Blob for the first time. Short impressions:

At first, I was worried about the controls. The tilt seemed kinda sketchy to me. However, I was impressed by the amount of customization that you can do o the controls. You can set the dead zone to whatever you want, so no mater what position you're in, it won't screw the tilt controls up. The gameplay is the classic de Blob from the freeware version, but top-down and more structured. You have to get a certain number of points before a pre-determined amount of time by completing challenges and painting the city. There's the "Revolution" mode, which is the "story" mode, which puts you up against the Inkt Corporation to take back the city in a colorful fashion. There's also "Free Splash", which is just a single level that you can mess around in.

I'm having a lot of fun with it so far. I'd recommend it. :)

Aurora Feint gave me a very Puzzle Quest-ish feel the first time I played it. I guess that's why I love it so much.

I like Aurora Feint a lot, it will definitely tide me over.

Just a quick update that Cro-Mag Rally has been dropped in price to 6 bucks. I haven't downloaded it so I can't vouch for its quality but most reviews have been positive, saying it's a decent kart racer.

I might pick it up next month (I've spent too much on apps already... ugh)

Had 4 updates in the app store just now so I went and decided to update all.

Since I was on 3G and not wi-fi, and since I was inside my office building (where I only have like 1 or 2 bars of service) AND had low batteries, I knew I was taking a risk, but hey, what the hell.

So it's loading, then installing Sportstap and Stanza and MyLite and another app and suddenly it resets itself. Then it sits at the silver Apple boot screen forever, even when I do a hard reset (home + power).

I do a couple more hard resets, and then leave it running for about 15 mins and lo and behold it gives me the keypad for my passcode. Phew!

Fucking iPhone... unstable as shit.

Also, anyone try Dynolicious? I'm really tempted.

wow, you tried to dl 4 apps on a flakey 3G connection, knowing the iPhone 2.0 fw is already unstable as shit?

ballsy!

About dynolicious, no i haven't tried it but here's a few thoughts:

first, I doubt it will be all that accurate as I have the (hilariously named) G-Spot app and that can give you velocity data from the GPS and it fluctuates a ton even when driving on smooth highway. I doubt you'll get decent accel and lateral g data with any app on the iPhone's GPS antenna.

second, there's a $5 app, called g-tac, which apparently does a similar thing as dynolicious. might be a cheaper experiment.

I want an iTouch but I already have one of the 80gb iPods =\ I just wanted it for the apps/web browsing. I don't know if it's worth it.

You can get a refurbished 8GB iPod Touch from apple for around 200 bucks online...

Then you'll end up blowing the 100 bucks you saved on apps. So, really, you're still out the same amount :)

btw, it's pretty awesome and totally worth it :P

Bah I know but it feels silly to spend all this money on an mp3 player when i have one of their latest models.

heads up baby, the updated boxoffice app absolutely DESTROYS any other movie app with what it added:

-you can read all the rotten tomatoes capsule reviews
-trailers
-completely stable now
-change distances to much smaller areas

it's officially the best now, i'd say.

Hm, I must be one of the few that isn't feeling MotionX. It's basically just luck based isn't it? There's some strategy to holding dice in relation to what the computer has but other than that there doesn't seem to be much depth.

So far I bought four games and here's how I would rank 'em:

1) Monkey Ball
2) Critter Crunch
3) Dizzy Bee / MotionX tied

Sounds like the old Graal. Supposed to be a Zelda like MMORPG but it was just assholes killing people.

btw, in case somebody missed that (or i missed an early post on the subject), aurora feint got an update recently. it fixes quite a few issues, yet still some remain (mainly stability).

Boxoffice app is good but I don't see any option to goto next days screen times like Onetap Movies, is there an option in Boxoffice to see future screen times?

i found an easy way to permanently skip the long backup during each sync:

1. - Quit iTunes.
2. - Open Terminal.app
3. - Copy and paste this in, then hit return:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes DeviceBackupsDisabled -bool true

4. - Open iTunes
5. - Plug in your iPhone (2.0 or 3G) and sync.

It will take a few seconds, assuming you don’t have a ton of music or podcasts.

Changing the ‘true’ in step 3 to ‘false’ will re-enable the backup feature.

Has it been changed to support Canada?

yes. postal codes are accepted.

but there's a weird bug where it completely misses the closest, largest cinema in my area. :\ other than that, it works great.

I deleted this app because you could only see movie times for the current day. Is this still the case? I usually have to plan my movie outings in advance (babysitter, wife, etc.) so without the option to see a couple days in advance, it's not much good to me, sadly.

Also, can you watch trailers for upcoming movies, or only those now in theaters?

Looks like you can change the search date now. Yay!
Also, it said 1.3 is coming with more features.

Yup, just checked it out and redownloaded! Now if I could only buy tickets for my local theater through the app. But I guess their website is only a few clicks away.

Problem is, none of your app data will be backed up now. What needs to happen is a patch that changes the back-up process from packing up the entire application and all of it's user data to JUST the user data.

They need to figure out a way to tie into both Fandango and MovieTickets.com, that will cover almost all theatres with online ticketing. As it stands you need to use Movies.App to access MovieTickets.com theatres, and BoxOffice for Fandago theatres. It's retarded.

I'm completely impressed with the App Store. It's so cool how it alerts you when there are new updates for the Apps you have installed, and then quickly and easily updates them for you when you tell it to. Sure there are a few bumps in the process, which will be worked ou in the future, but seriously, this is how digital distribution should work.

The new version of Aurora Feint is much better and fixed a lot of issues, but it's still unstable at times. Hope they fix it. I also have issues with it eating my battery like mad, and it seems that even after I finish playing, my battery life drops dramatically. Not sure if it's just my phone or if that's happening for others. There doesn't seem to be a proper way to "quit" the App, other than hitting the home button.

So I downloaded Labyrinth Lite Edition, and it's fantastic. Not sure if I want to spend $7 on the full app (I've spent too much money recently is the only thing holding me back, not the app itself) but it comes with 10 levels to give you an idea of the full app. Full app has 500+ levels with DLable level packs.

How is there not a STACKS type utility for sale yet!?

It was on the Jailbroken firmware, it should be easily done, and I have about 10 apps I never use like Stocks or You Tube.
