The Official Left 4 Dead Thread

played a versus game today with mismatched teams. on the finale i only just made it onto the helicopter by the skin of my teeth to win and we were all hooting and hollering over the mics and it was totally great. then we switched and the other team made a straight, no nonsense beeline for the finish and destroyed us by 1600 points =(

I had thought that the people on my team kept switching sides. My group didn't survive the finale but the other team did. My score ended up with 400 while the other team had 3000. Apparently the game switched me to the other side during the finale stage. It might be that I load way slow(playing at 1920x1200) and someone jumped over to my winning team. Valve seriously needs to fix this, I hear some people get booty bumped and sometimes they have to play as survivor twice.

I don't know how that works, either. After 3 maps on No Mercy, the team I was on was ahead by 1500 or so, then everybody BUT me got switched to the other team. The team I got put on lost the last two maps, and the final score had my team with about 500 more points, seemed weird.

I haven't been following this game too much. Have they commented on DLC for Xbox Live? I think I'll end up buying it anyways, but this would surely help.

There's been some good retail impressions about its 360 sales so, I wouldn't be surprised this time around.

They're going to try to do simultaneous release for PC and 360, depending how nice Microsoft likes to play. As for pricing, all depends on microsoft and finding a sponsor.

Good to hear. The only worry I have about this game is that I'll get bored of it, although I've been assured I won't. :P

That's because CS is Half Life's defacto multiplayer. And HL sold like a bajillion copies. L4D's sales on the PC are phenomenal. It was the NPD's #2 best selling PC game for the last week of November, only behind Litch King.
 
just had a game ruined by a griefer. The guy basically tried to friendly fire us to death. How do you initiate a vote to kick a person off for future reference?

If you're on the PC version, just hit escape, then go to "Call vote" or whatever, then pick the desired option.

I'm going to test out how many i can toss on screen at once w/out it crashing and take another pic :). I wanted to flood the streets with them but it froze last time i tried :(

It may seem as though it doesn't have that much content...but rest assured, whether it be the campaign or versus mode, the game keeps you coming back :)

- Wait til they're all bunched up
- Drop in front of them when they're waiting for the elevator in No Mercy Hospital
- Always spawn ahead of them and wait for them to run pass you.
- Hide around corners, so you're in point blank range!
 
Great, another play to the finale and then someone steals my damn winning side. When the game is close, I don't get swapped. People are intentionally doing it because they're on the losing team.

I just saw perhaps the cheesiest thing against the tank. Other team standing in a corner waiting for the tank to come and they all dropped him in seconds with shotguns. I just love pulling people down from the forklift place when they start running into the building.
 
cheesiest tank kill is using a propane tank at that narrow door in No Mercy 4 on the top floor. if you shoot the propane the tank will stagger... off the building woot. kill him in one shot.

Ah, abuse of the M key. People on lousy teams and fast computers are hitting the M key before the rest load to switch teams. That's something that needs a patch. I can see that being abused in public matches, cause the last GAF only game I played even had someone do it.

On the finale of Blood Harvest I played a team that all stood in the corner (by the ammo table in the house) with auto-shotties versus the tank. I was wondering if, in hindsight, you wouldn't be best to charge in, and try and pick up a rock and knock them down that way. If they stay grouped, shouldn't all 4 fall? And couldn't you just keep repeating till incap?

Yeah they seriously need to patch it. The group that took my team's tank down we were playing No Mercy 2nd stage. They were in the corner near the weapons with the door after the subway. They waited for him to go thru the door and blasted him.

On Blood Harvest, Francis died because I pulled him down and a hunter pounced on him. I then became the tank and I think Zoey was down as well and it was Louis and Bill left. They both shotgunned me without even running away and my health dropped to yellow. Tank IMO is really weak on Normal and can easily be taken down with shotguns if people are good on health.

There's some inane autobalancing (or bug) apparently going on too as I know for a fact most of the time this happens no one switched on purpose.

I don't wanna go into specifics and make anyone feel bad, but in that particular incident, if it wasn't intentional, the algorithm that does the switching is horribly, horribly broken.
 
Being the tank is so great if the survivors aren't aware the vehicles and be punched around and will insta-cap them.

Got an easy "kill all 4 of them as tank" achievement without breaking a sweat.

...and is it just me, or do you dread everytime you spawn as a hunter? Smokers and Boomers are just so much more interesting characters to me. Hunters are usually much more useful swiping than pouncing. Pouncing only makes sense if everyone on the team is vomited on or if someone has strayed too far away from the rest of the group.

Yeah, if survivors are blindly shooting auto-shotguns everywhere, and staying in a tiny huddle and doing melee constantly, 1-2 special zombies at a time can't really do anything, including hunters. Hunters are good for synchronized attacks if your team is amazing and the other team can't melee-block them midair, or if someone is off by themselves. Otherwise, they are good at distracting with the bouncing and screams, and for running up to melee slash low-health people. I think I killed the remaining two people on a team by slash-and-run melee yesterday, rather than pouncing and getting shot off.

The tank rock can also be really helpful, but I'm still really bad as a tank sometimes so I don't really know what to do.
 
I'm sure this is a stupid question, but if you buy the boxed version of this game it still shows up in Steam like The Orange Box, right? I'm assuming it does since it is a Source game and the developer was bought by Valve, but it annoys me that some games I bought boxed (like Titan Quest) don't synch up with Steam even though you can download the game through it.

Hunters are the most fun infected to play, generally. Pouncing always makes sense if you can get the impact damage up to 15-25 (the cap), which can be done almost anywhere but does require some skill. Works even against highly coordinated teams that are always hugging each other. Just wall jumping around is great fun and can be used to distract them or to quickly recover from a failed long distance pounce.

Played the first three levels of Death Toll in versus earlier, and honestly, I have no idea why they're not available normally. It's perfectly fair for Infected.
 
I got insta-killed by a smoker when I came up the ladder at the No Mercy finale on versus. He pulled me off the roof to the ground and it was instant un-revivable death.

That's an exploit right? Because it is cheap as all get out.

it's a glitch because you should hang. it's not the smoker's fault (though he's probably doing it purposely) but the level's. if a fall can kill you you should hang.

btw as a smoker you should be learning all the "drop spots" where you can make someone drop off a ledge or fall out a window to take significant falling damage and not grab on the ledge. yet you'll still drag them towards you and out of the way of any help, it's pretty cool. if you ever see a survivor on the satellite building or if you're below them when they are on those pipes next to the machine gun building you know what to do.

there's also a tiny gutter pipe or something on the machine gun building that you can pull survivors towards and they'll hang onto it because the actual pipe model goes about 20 foot underground. meaning survivors will fall like 6 feet and die woot. it's the black one on top of the stairs.
 
Has anyone come across the modding that is taking place on the 360 version of Left 4 Dead? Apparently, some guy named III BRAN III found a way to spawn witches, tanks, and weapons at will and this has started a trend that is making the 360 version unplayable. :(
 
@Papercuts,

I think it is very possible but you need 4 people who stick together at all times during the campaign. I think it would be easiest to accomplish on Dead Air as there are a lot of open spaces to run from Tanks and keep the Boomers away.

With all four people right next to each other, you can make sure you have each other covered to quickly melee away a Hunter or a Smoker's tongue.
 
Anyone got any ideas what custom campaigns are coming in the future? I know about the Dawn of the Dead one, which looks special.
