The Official Sonic Rush Thread

Almost here.

Soon it will be mine.

The anticipation for a new ST Sonic game I'm feeling cannot be expressed in words except for perhaps this sentence.
You mean Dimps. :(

I thought it's been established that IGN messed up.
I did not realize that. Well, if you are indeed correct, thank goodness. I've been very excited about this one (one more week!) and didn't want another Dimps game...

is it really dimps? do we have a source besides the ign review? that would explain the graphics style. i kind of want rush for the naganuma soundtrack, but i have a hard time believing that a dimps game will be SONIC'S LONG-AWAITED RETURN TO FORM.

edit: i see. FU IGN.

I'm listening to samples from the soundtrack right now. God I feel like I'm in an early 90's arcade, with all those hip-hop samples.

Damn, if they make a soundtrack, it is so mine.

One of 'our' reviewers has played and completed it (and given it 9/10 in our magazine). He claims the end titles list both Sonic Team and Dimps as the developers. It's possible that ST is only listed because they created the characters and concept -- this, unfortunately, is not made clear. What is certain is that Dimps had a hand in Sonic Rush. Nevertheless, our reviewer claims it is Sonic's return to form, and he didn't much care for the Advance versions.

What does it say when the game starts up? They usually have the developers mentioned. Not to mention it should also have it on the box.

I know, it sounds fantastic.

My only complaint is the actual sound quality. If those samples represent the quality of the music in game, I'll be very disappointed. I was hoping for the crisp, clean sound of JSRF or Ollie King...

I don't believe any Advance title actually had a "Dimps" logo during startup (just Sega then Sonic Team).

Does the manual have a credits list? Can your friend list them? It could be that Dimps is acknowledged due to some contribution [using art assets from a Sonic Advance 4 maybe?]

if it IS dimps, hey, it only took them 4 tries to get it right :P

Honestly, after some of their recent output, do you think Sonic Team would really make that much of a better 2D Sonic game than DIMPS? Heck, I don't know how much of the original Sonic Team from the Sonic 3 and Knuckles days is actually left, but I'm sure it's not much.

I'll have this game in my hands at 12:00 tomorrow. Watching videos of this game, how could it possibly go wrong? It looks so frantic and crazy, just like the old Sonics.

This was an advance, 99% complete review copy (we got it about a month ago)... so there was no box. On boot-up, only Sonic Team is listed. Naka is also listed as the game's director in the end credits.

So the plot thickens, I guess. :) Perhaps Sonic Team used some of the Sonic Advance code, but is otherwise largely responsible for this, by all accounts, fine game? A genuinely combined effort, a la the Zelda Oracles/Minish Cap (augmented by EAD, crafted by Flagship) is also a distinct possibility.

Considering Sonic Teams HUGE output on the DS [Feel the Magic, Rub Rabbits!, Puyo Pop Fever, Puyo Pop Fever 2], it'd be surprising if they DIDN'T bother to make the game themselves this time, really. I don't think any other SEGA Subdirectory is bothering with the DS yet, are they?

How long does this game take to beat?

Rental, or purchase?

Looks like I might pick up both MKDS and Sonic Rush tommorrow.

thanks for the clarification, farmboy.

hm. i only hear good things about sonic rush, but lately too many ds games are fawned over just for being ds games. i won't take a blind chance on another dimps sonic; i don't like their style.

Quoting myself from this very thread

The Sonic Advance trilogy was not a Dimps solo project but a collaboration between Sonic Team and Dimps with Sonic Team staffers holding key positions like art direction and lead designer. In fact Sonic Rush has the same director as the three advance games so it wouldn't suprise me if the entire Sonic Team portion of the advance team also worked on Rush. But hey, maybe this time they got it right?

The Advance Team consisted of about 40% Sonic Team and 60% Dimps. This means that Sonic Team always was heavily involved in the advance games so in the end I don't think there would have been much difference even if Dimps hadn't worked on Rush. But hey they must get it right sometimes, right?

From the videos that I have seen, and this is only a small sample, it does PLAY like the Sonic Advance games. That is, it's constant running and memorizing enemy obstacles. This is a contrast to the style of gameplay in Sonic 1 and Sonic CD that consisted of a lot of jumping and general platforming. For anybody hoping for a return to THAT style of gameplay, you are going to be disappointed. But it does have some platforming, probably about as much as the Advance series. Of course, I'm judging all of this on about 5 minutes of gameplay footage, having never actually played the game myself.

Either way, the gameplay looks 10X faster than the Advance games, and that's the main thing that gets my hopes up.

I'm lovin' it so far!

Getting used to the dual-screen takes a minute to get used to, but it becomes second nature after that.

I also really like the new 'boost' move that Sonic has that helps keep the action going.

The one thing about this game is that there are so many secrets that I'm just gliding past. I don't wanna slow down to investigate any secrets, when it's so fun to just keep on moving!!!

Oh well, maybe after I beat the game.

BTW, this game has that Genesis feeling, and I love it. It feels almost like Sonic 3 & Knuckles, only with grinding...and faster...and with better music. More impressions to come.

Another note about this game.

It's difficult.

Anybody hoping to just hold right and zoom through loops all day is in for a big disappointment.

I did end up asking Craig, and he told me this:
I've known since just after E3 that Dimps was responsible for Sonic Rush. This info is direct from Sega, by the way...not something fabricated. I think it's being downplayed because Sonic Team doesn't want all the publicity towards that team because, well, this might be the best Sonic ever. It's an ego thing.
http://boards.ign.com/Message.aspx?topic=102942520&brd=7585

I dunno if it's just something he heard from a Sega of America employee that was also mistaken, but it seems he did not make this up on his own.

I do know that every rep at Sega's E3 booth this year was claiming Sonic Rush was developed by Sonic Team. I assumed it was Dimps at first but was corrected by them... For what that's worth.

Dear Sega,

I have always been loyal to you, I have owned all of your consoles since the Sega Master System. There was one thing that I always had plenty of, that was Sonic the Hedgehog games. Then came the Sega Saturn......and the Dreamcast......and you decided to fuck a stranger in the ass with Sonic 3D Blast and all of these shitty Sonic games with guess what...AS LITTLE SONIC AS POSSIBLE! I mean COME ON A FUCKING FAT CAT WHO FISHES!? A ROBOT WITH THE ABILITY TO LOCk ON TO EVERY ENEMY IN SIGHT#!?@> A BITCH WITH A MALLET!#? Then you decided to go third party....Sonic Heroes......sigh. Then you gave me some hope with your Sonic Advance titles.....BUT YOU GAVE ME THESE DAMN STUPID EXPLORATION LEVELS...AND THAT BITCH WITH THE HAMMER IS STILL HERE!? CHAO!#@??

Then yesterday I took a break from my Mario Kart DS and purchased Sonic Rush....thank you Sega.

A tear in my eye ;)

SONIC RUSH fucking rules!

Has anybody else tried out Blaze? She is a bit different than Sonic after all. Instead of a 'boost' attack she hovers in the air. And her spin dash is different(it's almost like a tornado of fire). I also noticed the game is even HARDER with Blaze(and it's no cake-walk with Sonic either).

But the problem with reviews is she plays too much like Sonic....which is good to me because I dislike playing as anyone BUT Sonic now. Even Tails is starting to piss me off...and don't get me started on Knuckles the treasure hunter.

When I first turned on the game and blasted through the first level and boss, I wasn't sure if I was dissapointed or just sick of Sonic afterall.

Reading the manual and returning to start Stage 2 to implement some of the control tricks and jump abilities I read about, my delight for the game skyrocketed. I really began to take notice of the secrets/bonuses embedded in each stage for those that can hack and react quickly enough to using Sonic's special maneuvers to reach them. The actual progression still seems broken up into classic 'tiers' with the high road feeling a bit more rewarding than the lower for those that can stay afloat; though ultimately the levels are tightly focused and don't stress exploration or collection such as in Sonic CD or the Advance games.

The JSR-inspired grind and air-tricks mixed with the boost meter and the Sonic Adventure homing dash, really add to the playability, the quirky breakdance animations Sonic goes through are exhilerating to watch and pull off.

I'm shocked that in the couple hours I played, I've amassed 4 of the 7 chaos emeralds. The bonus rounds are ribbed from Sonic 2's half-pipe, albeit require full on stylus control(whcih works suprisingly well). Not too frustrating either unlike the past Chaos emerald bonus games.

Oh and the music is quite awesome, aside from the dissapointly bland first level theme.

It does play like a DIMPS game in that it's almost constant running, but the physics feel much more Genesis Sonic.

You'd have to play it to see what I mean.

You know what, I think they did that on purpose.

See, in Sonic 3, Tails and Knuckles had a clear advantage over Sonic in that they played exactly the same, except that they had additional abilities(unless you count the insta-shield). That kinda made Sonic seem a bit useless.

So, I guess Sonic Team went back and tried to make Sonic the best overall character again by making him a bit better and by making his sidekicks a bit worse.

Has there been a game to top the 1st one on Genesis? For me, it was Sonic 1 and SMWorld all day. All post-Sonic 1 games just didn't measure up to the first one.

Sonic 1 is definitely up there for me. See, each Sonic is different. I group Sonic 1 and Sonic CD together, cuz they play very much alike. Same physics, same gameplay style, etc.

Sonic 2 is more of a 'hold right and jump when you have to until you beat the game' type of thing. This is where Sonic Advance 1-3 gets its style from.

Sonic 3 and Knuckles is a mixture of the two. It brought back more of the platforming elements, made the game a bit tougher, and added a bunch of new elements as well.

I can't choose a favorite. It's like choosing between children. :D

Well, Sonic 1 is my deceased son...revive him, Sega!

Still waiting for the untapped potential of a Mario & Sonic collabo game...screw the Mario & Luigi stuff, Nintendo. Get with the program, now.

I was playing Mario Kart yesterday, retro tracks and it was bringing back old memories from the snes days. One thing that came to mind was that, the only commercial I remember for SMK was actually done by sega. "Sega has blast processing, nintendo doesn't" and they showed Sonic versus Mario Kart. The irony, all these years later, a new sonic game comes out at the same time as mario kart and they're both on a nintendo handheld.

I'm too busy with mario kart, metroid prime and meteos to get sonic though after these three, I will pick it up (I actually was unaware that the game was out already). It looked fantastic at E3.

Very cool observation! The DS really is reviving classic 2D franchises... In more ways than one.

The Japanese mario Kart ad rocked!

I recall there being a North American one too, but I don't remember it too well, so it must not have been too spectacular.

Man the 1st boss is absolutely terrible. Sonic bosses are supposed to die in 3 hits or something, not this long drawn out hit once and wait 10 secs to have a chance to hit again x 8.

I liked the first stage but man the bosses better get good because this guy sucked.

Have... Have you even PLAYED the Genesis Sonics?

Actually, knowing that bosses take 8 hits to kill again fills me with UNBRIDLED JOY.

Well, a lot of the advance bosses took quite a bit of time if you didn't know what you were doing. Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 had short bosses for the most part, though all took 8 hits (not the 3 hits or so you said :P )

Sonic 3 & Knuckles, on the other hand, tested your patience quite a bit.

I forgot to mention the bosses above, but I'm also not too fond of them either. The patterns are sound, but they do drag on far too long, usually forcing you to endure spans of invincibility before the weakpoint is exposed. They look impressive for the DS and are mostly varied(except for the semi-repeat bosses) at least.

Ultimately though, I just don't feel they really build on what Sonic does best. The methodical bopping-on-enemy-head thing has never been a memorable trait in Sonic games, and pidgeon-holing an entire set of bosses around this one mechanic is poor form, especially since all the great and fun NEW abilities are stripped from these snoozer duels.

I read that some of the Advance titles feature Boss fights that break away the arena walls and have you racing for survival and chances to strike, that sounds a lot more interesting.
