The ramifications of sports license exclusitivity and next gen consoles

We all have stated our thoughts on the EA NFL issue. Now that the issue is here and there is nothing that can be done about it, lets take a look at how it could impact the next generation consoles. Sports games drive a VERY large percentage of north america game sales. It makes up the largest portion. Forget about Halo. Forget about GTA. If you want the number one console, you need the best sports games on it with all the bells in whistles. Because these games sell in big numers on a yearly basis. More importantly, football games take up the lions share of sports games sales. Meaning sports football games are one of the main driving forces in the NA market. Now, how does this all relate? Remember how EA shunned the Dreamcast in the past? Well, they could do it again. With EA the sole holder of the NFL license, if they decide to align themselves with one console manufacturer next gen in the sports football arena it is already game, set match. There are now no other competing football game alternatives for gamers to choose. So if EA decides to back PS3 by giving them Madden exclusive for a couple years it is already game, set, and match in NA for the next generation of consoles. Imagine a NFL game available on only one console. No other console would be able to compete. If you want to win next gen, get Madden as an exclusive! All other developers will follow into place! It is as simple as that!

That would only apply to North America though

Agreed. The rest of the world won't care at all what the NFL decides to do with it's franchise. If FIFA did something like this, then maybe there might be a problem....

EA = FIFA license = everything.

Konami = LFP, SERIA A, Dutch Eredivisie, FIFpro = Dutch, italian, Spainsh leagues all team names and players right//real names for English players and the rest of the worlds's players but the team names are not licensed.

Konami got around it but this will not work with any american sports.

Lets start rumours about microsoft signing an exclusive deal with ea for madden on xbox only. Maybe they will reach wallstreet :lol

I think that's the case now, but even then, Japan wouldn't exactly mind. They know football quality where they see it.

I mean football as in soccer. </edit>

Madden 2006 will probably also be the deciding factor as to how well Xbox 2 will do out of the gates. If Madden 2006 for XB2 is worlds better than the xbox and PS2 counterparts and makes people HAVE to go out and pick up both (like what happened for 2001) then that will give Xbox 2 a VERY very big headstart in NA. Of course if EA decides to postpone their big next-gen upgrade for PS3 launch then things are going to be very tough for MS. Forget about backwards compatibility, playing HD movies and all of that, next gen Madded is probably the single biggest deciding factor.

I hope to god this doesn't happen. It just isn't fair if Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft gets Madden exclusive on their console. There would be absolute way to counter it if it were to happen. Everyone sport fan will flock to whoever has Madden and they win the console war. The best choice would be Sony.

PS2 MADDEN NFL 2002 $97,356,056 2,000,625
XBX MADDEN NFL 2002 $19,706,557 420,246
GCN MADDEN NFL 2002 $15,149,644 388,643

PS2 MADDEN NFL 2003 $132,397,078 2,723,850
XBX MADDEN NFL 2003 $23,304,288 525,015
GCN MADDEN NFL 2003 $9,859,684 273,550

PS2 MADDEN NFL 2004 $167,039,125 3,419,157
XBX MADDEN NFL 2004 $38,846,287 794,653
GCN MADDEN NFL 2004 $14,884,257 310,807

PS2 MADDEN NFL 2005 $86,553,656 1,914,346
PS2 MADDEN NFL 2005 COLL $24,895,630 421,646
XBX MADDEN NFL 2005 $36,068,000 773,981
GCN MADDEN NFL 2005 $8,909,818 203,527

If EA were to back the PS3, it could still huge revenue. EA gets about 60% - 70% of their sales from the PS2. Sony would be the best partner to align with.

i doubt that there will be both an Xbox and X2 release next year. MS seems to want to stop losing mony on the Xbox ASAP, and will probably drop the Xbox cold shortly before the X2 release.
