I'm aware you can pause it, and I was using that youtube video too, I simply can't distinguish the breaks in each letter. I guess I just don't know what to listen for.

You can see it on the video too - the 'breaks' are when it pauses for about 2-3 times as long as usual. I wouldn't beat yourself up over morse code, it's not worth the frustration imo. In terms of video, if you were to pause spam you could see like - . - fly by (the dots are almost exactly one 'screen' worth of bandwidth, the dashes are like two screens, and the spaces between letters are 2-3 screens of silence)

Played for five hours last night, didn't come close to dying. Been playing since noon today and have died all kinds of times once I got to the area around the scrapyard and skatepark. Yikes!

I am having a great time with this game, though. Just wish I had people to play regularly with.

I was working on The Big Terrible Picture in Egypt...huge shame it's broken, I love this investigation. Sort of tedious in the same way as morse code/math logic ones, but then you've got to use some of your brain afterwards too which I dig, and not nearly AS tedious.

I like Egypt a lot so far.

You can be on any server for everything but world pvp, can join the cabal regardless ;) Though...I think Indigo Cyclops is templar according to the sheet? Maybe I'll make an illuminati cabal if I can figure out how.

I made an Enlightened Gaf for illuminati members. Just fire me a tell to get an invite (name is Area)

I wasn't aware Cabal were faction limited. My bad! That stinks. I'll be on in a bit and invite more and do some organizing like ranking and stuff.

I like the idea of being a Coven ;l

Most useful non-spoiler website I've found. These quest designers LOVE ciphers. This site has worked for everything so far (I'm all for the discovery, but who really wants to manually translate things when they already know the cipher? I don't).

Ask in chat if someone has been able to complete the mission recently, then ask for an invite to their instance. They'll need to invite you to your group, but you should be able to complete it then. That's what I've had to do for every broken mission I've encountered so far. In some instances they're find, in other's they're broken.

how do you know if your a tank, dps or healer in this game? All I know is I have a shotgun.....

I'm not sure if this is right, but I think it comes down to what the weapon is broken down into on the skill point page. My hammer for example has damage and survivability, which would be tanking I'm assuming. I've noticed some hammer skills have +threat on them. I'm assuming support would be healing/buffs or whatever.

Anyone ever got a faction mission? Is there a way to get it back?

I got one all of a sudden, but at the time a GM was asking resume the bugged mission.
I thought of pausing the faction mission, but it was gone when I did.

That's pretty much it. Weapons tend toward certain rolls, although an individual may skew that based on the exact deck and gear they're using at the time. For example, if you ignore all the threat abilities on hammer you may not want to advertise as a tank depending on what the rest of your load out is.

To give an example, I'm going pistols which has some healing and group buff abilities. Since I don't use any of 'em and have just as much elemental in my build I call myself DPS.

Try going to headquarters/main contact of your factions room. I think they hold them there.

Thanks for the offer but can't really play now (Im not at home). I'll see what the situation is tonight and if its still not working Im moving on to savage coast. Game is way too good to let one quest ruin it.

every weapon has a dps route, but each may choose another role as healing/support/tanking. pistols is dps + support
shotgun would be dps + tanking
assault rifle is dps + healing,
etc.

gear doesn't matter that much. i went through the ql8 dungeon with 0 healing gear but with good healing skills and we came out on top. of course i got 3 healing loot along the way, but it seems hard roles aren't really necessary.

Good to see this thread kicking off a bit. I think the all-around positive feedback is really showing.

is there any faq out there, that explains the skill wheel?

i've been lvling up AR & fist weapon, but ended up using AR mostly. :/
i really do not know what i'm doing.

Early on you should definitely at least concentrate on one weapon until you've unlocked the inner circle stuff. First I'll explain how the wheel works, then the philosophy of what to do with it.

The basics of the skill wheel: You have to unlock all inner wheel abilities for a weapon in order to start unlocking outer wheel. Each weapon has a DPS oriented half and a secondary half: Tanking, healing, support.

For example, Assault Rifles have a damage half (hovering over that part of the circle will call it the "Engage" group of skills), and a healing half (Hovering over that half will be labelled "Support"). Each cluster of skills in the wheel has 7 abilities, approximately half active and half passive, within each cluster you need to unlock skills in order from top to bottom. So you can work on either DPS (engage) or Healing (support) with the AR as you desire, one, both, mix and match, whatever. Eventually, you unlock all abilities for the AR on the inner row, this unlocks the 6 outer row clusters. The 6 clusters on the outer row ALSO roughly coincide with the two inner row clusters (clicking on either inner or outer row clusters will show a sort of column of light radiating from the center that highlights this), so there are 3 healing oriented AR outer ring clusters, and 3 DPS ones. The outer ring abilities are WAY more expensive in terms of AP. They are NOT necessarily more powerful, they tend to be more focused.

So how do you utilize this to make a build?
First off, choose a weapon you want to use, if you're desiring to heal or tank, you need to pick one of those weapons (healing = Fist, AR, Blood. Tanking = Hammer, Chaos, Shotgun) to start with probably. Early on, it's best to just build one of these weapons up so you can start functioning in combat. At the very least, you'll see what kinds of states you want to utilize to get the most out of your abilities, for instance something that says "Does 100 damage. Does 150 damage to hindered targets" would mean you'd want to hinder them to make that attack more efficient than other attacks. Many weapons do not play off of their own status effects, at least not in the inner circle, so don't sweat it, just make note of it.

Once you've got a feel for how that weapon works and how combat works, you'll want to choose a second weapon - you can equip 2 weapons at all times in TSW, and it's greatly to your benefit to do so. If for absolutely no other reason, many attacks will build resources for BOTH weapons, and having a second finisher is great efficiency (build to 5 AR resources AND 5 melee resources, then hit 2 finishers in a row, for example). Beyond that, what you want in a build is SYNERGY. This may not even involve two weapon (it may involve tons of weapons when it comes to passive abilities, who knows). An example is from my current build, which is Swords/Assault Rifles, i'm not saying I'm god at this game, but it's what I'm using so I know it at least:

My build focuses on Affliction and Penetration, affliction being a dot, and penetration being sort of like a crit - instead of doubling damage, penetration ignores the armor of the target when it triggers. I have my two most important passives:
Incision - Whenever you Penetrate, you cause the target to be Afflicted for 3 seconds
Fatal Flourish - Whenever you cause affliction, you gain a stack of 30 penetration rating, stacks 5 times
The synergy with these passives, basically cause me to only need to get a few penetrations OR afflictions in order to stack up a huge penetration buff which keeps afflicting targets and sustaining my buff. My other passives all play into these two factors - either causing a penetration or affliction, OR buffing/debuffing based upon getting a proc of them.

Then for active abilities, My basic single target builder, Grass Cutter, is weaker by default than the basic sword attack, however it hits about 30% harder if it's against an afflicted target. I ALMOST always have an affliction on my target, making this a better choice for me. For AE, I have a builder - Blade Torrent, and a passive that makes Blade torrent ALWAYS afflict all targets hit for 8 seconds. I can even use this single target if my affliction luck is against me in order to force my buff to stack from Fatal Flourish. Then I have an AE finisher, Clearing The Path, which is weaker than the default AE finisher on its own, BUT it is 100% penetration against any afflicted targets, which my builder AE automatically causes. For single target finishing, I use Destiny, it consumes all of my blade resources and does (the tooltip is wrong so I'm not entire positive) 227 damage per sword resource, but also does a 200 damage affliction dot if the target is already afflicted, again playing into my synergies. Finally I have an AE assault rifle finisher (my only AR finisher of note, so I stick with it because it's still a single target dps gain to use it when I have 5 resources), and an AE stun, which I use in AE or in single target situations to reduce damage or prevent spell casts etc.

I hope that wasn't too long winded, I was trying to give an example of how you can make a weapon work for you. I should note: I'm building towards a Slayer deck, which is Sword/AR, and yet I'm BARELY using any of the abilities from that deck as it stands: The deck uses the same weapons in COMPLETELY different ways than I am, focusing on Frenzy AE attacks, rather than Afflictions and Penetrating blows. It shows how much depth there is, just within the 'sword' lines you have probably a dozen different viable bases for builds that are totally different!

Don't forget to spend those SP as well, of course. If you want more ideas about how the different abilities can work for you, check out your factions decks (it's a drawer on the left side of the ability wheel). There are descriptions for all of them and ability lists, you can look at those and get a feel for how things work there too since they tell you the intended playstyle. Plus, you might find an outfit you want ;)

thanks for that post yanger, it answered the question I was about to ask before I asked it. I just capped the inner circle of blood magic, and was wondering if I should continue deeper or switch over to fists for the thaumaturge deck. Blood dots ticking while causing massive face punch damages? It's like they built a class just for me.

Can the game be played as a single player game? I know even WoW kinda can, but you know what I mean. I'm playing Old Republic by myself and it works decently as a SP game.

I'm not far into the game atm, but yes : it can be played as a SP game pretty much.

Dammit man, thats a really informative post! Wish I had read something like that week ago, then again it was fun to figure it out by myself.

Attention Secret World newbies, read Yangers post!

Thanks! Glad it made sense. I found the skill wheel incredibly daunting at first - even once you understand it THERE IS A LOT OF SHIT to read before you can truly grasp it. There are all sorts of charts and shit, which are sort of useful, showing the synergies between weapons, but holy shit they're cryptic imo if you don't already understand how the system works. I think it's a lot easier to grasp with just basics like that instead of trying to figure out what kinds of synergies exist before you've even truly played the game. (Which is why I went for a deck at all - cause I figured I'd finish the deck and at least be 'stable' to level other weapons. This was stupid of course because I didn't realize how long building your first deck takes. Protip: It's forever and a day).

I am never, ever using GamersGate again. What a joke.

Bought The Secret World for myself and a friend 2 days ago to get the 15% discount from my IGN Prime account. I gift him a copy, and realize that the only copy I have left says "giftable only"...okay so I must have somehow gifted him the copy I bought for myself. The only thing left to do is gift myself the last copy, so I do. I never receive an e-mail with the gift. My gift page only says "Gift sent to pending" with no option to cancel or resend the gift. The game has essentially been lost in limbo for 2 days. I sent in a help ticket right away and they STILL haven't gotten back to me.

I thought Steam customer service was bad...GamersGate customer service is abhorrent.

It took a couple of hours for the game to click, but after that i just couldn't stop playing.

It feels like a breath of fresh air after so many MMOs with levels and little to no choices in how to build your character.

I love the amount of details put into the quests and how varied they are. The experience so far feels way deeper than most of the recent MMORPG ive played.

The combat could use some work, but i enjoy it anyway.

So tempted to buy this as I love the concept and the setting, but fear I can't play it :(

I missed the open Beta weekend a few weeks back, so I couldn't download it and find out.

I have an i7 Laptop, 1.8gig Quad Core, 4gig DDR3 RAM and a ATI 5670 1gig Vid Card..I think. My laptop isn't on me atm so I cannot confirm, but I am pretty sure that sounds right :p

I like almost all of this game. Except the store. That is a ripoff. Paying a monthly subscription and have items i have to buy is lame. I haven't found any decent clothes in game as well. Only the store in London.

I think the point he is making is that if it's a premium MMO, why is there a cash shop for items and clothes? It's the only thing about the game I don't like as well. You've already got my $50 and $15/mo, why should I have to buy Funcom points to buy clothes? All of those items should at least be available at the in-game vendors as well, so you can choose to buy them with Pax Romana or real money. It's kind of shitty.

Has anything changed since the weekend beta a few weeks back? Everything felt pretty clunky there, sadly. The setting and story looks great, but everything about the gameplay felt unfinished.

Depends which weekend. The final one was a polish pass which helped a lot.

I'm really loving the game. The setting is a horror lit geek's dream and the quests are probably the most impressive (and hardcore) ones I've ever seen in a MMO (or adventure gaming)

Mid may, I think. The first weekend.

By broken you mean difficult to solve. The actual broken quests can be found here:

http://forums.thesecretworld.com/showthread.php?t=37724

Don't give up just because you haven't figured it out yet.

That isn't exactly accurate. I know of two Kingsmouth quests that are broken per instance other than those. One was the circuit breaker golem (There's Something About Ellis Hill), the other was the dog escort (It Takes Two To Tango). Both the golem and the dog wouldn't spawn in the instance I was in and I wasn't able to complete them until I switched instances. The golem was perma dead and the dog simply didn't exist anywhere in the game.

"There's Something About Ellis Hill" has nothing to do with the Circuit golem, though.

By the way... explore Kingsmouth when you are dead guys, maaan it can get creepy. Visit spots that were part of investigation missions, I say that much :)

Well, the one you do in order to pick that one up then. It doesn't change the fact that it was bugged for me.

EDIT: Google tells me Runaway Lights.

Pretty much this for any area :)

I purposely died in Blue Mountain (for ideas on a quest) and ran into the mansion there and found extra stuff. Really adds to the atmosphere these little touches.
