Always innocent until proven guilty. Always. Whoever's jumping off the boat prematurely are being immature and we're better off without.
All I will say is that I believe in innocent until proven guilty and that intentions matter. Perhaps all the people running account suicide should think about that. But they won't. Luckily, I expect this site will survive. The community is better than this.
*sigh* I feel too many of you do not understand what brings about the belief in an accuser's story and why people do so. It is not the belief that one is guilty automatically, it is the knowledge that in the vast majority of accusations of this nature most are not false, by lie or mistake.
The accuser is the one that is at a disadvantage almost all the time (except in racist, sexist, etc cases.) and everyone knows this, so it is difficult for them to come out about it. Not only that, but people like you guys tout "innocent until proven guilty" and take the side of the accused, leaving the accuser with very little support to carry on.
This is why many rapes and other sexual crimes (indeed it is speculated that majority of rapes) are not reported. Sure, the left's way of dealing with it is not the best, but that "innocent until proven guilty" approach also have consequences for the accuser.
Besides this, majority of GAF were and are not "hive-minded" in that they call for the accused's head either. You have some posts saying it and people calling out some of those posts as if it is majority opinion because people say they will back the accuser more.
The idea that OT was a place where you had to tread thin-ice or avoid it like the plague is simply not true. I have voiced minority opinion (including support of death penalty) and yet I have not been banned, though I have been called out by some.
The issue is with the current climate and even somewhat before, a certain party in the U.S sticks with backwards belief which harms minority groups. In order to come out as a Republican or right-wing, you must defend the fact that you are fully willing to sacrifice these groups of people (which are dying. being killed, and being persecuted) for whatever you are voting right-wing people in for. It is not easy to do that, without seeming like a terrible person and yet many have done this as some vote Republicans in for tax reasons and yet they were not banned.
It was a simple common-sense rule and usually there are many signs that you are treading thin-ice before you actually get banned and can "correct" your behavior or apologize and leave the tread. Many simply didn't, dug deeper and were banned. I can't say I am sure banning such people is the right approach, but I sure as hell do not like having to argue with a person who is being obtuse, arguing semantics, or strawmen as they dance around my words. How else can such people be dealt with if not a ban?
