I'm glad 50hz is one of those things everyone complains about that I've never noticed and just live in blissful ignorance about.

Seriously I was just playing Little King's Story yesterday and I would never have known if not for this post :lol

I still play some online Goldeneye matches from time to time, Activision games somehow avoided the shutdown. I can't believe I've played it for more than 500 hours, lol.

I was really surprised at how good the Goldeneye remake was. I played it online quite a bit back when it was new.

Yep. Goldeneye 64 is one of my favourite games ever, and the remake is its own thing, which I think it's good. They kept the different objectives depending on the difficulty you're playing, which was the reason why Goldeneye was so great. Fantastic campaign and a surprisingly good online mode for Wii standards.

My newest additions to an ever-growing Wii collection:

Does anyone else feel like a giant dork when they call gamestop seeing if the wii games they're looking for come complete in box? I do, but I also don't want to drive twenty minutes for a generic case and cover art. Defeats the purpose of a collection.

Why would you feel like a dork? You should feel like a responsible customer making sure the product he buys is complete and as advertised since the seller cannot be trusted to either disclose these details on their own or guarantee that the completeness of their offered products is never in question.

edit: off topic observation: I feel we live in a time where caring is not considered "cool" or something which leads us to situations like these.

I'd feel more like a dork if I bought a game in a generic case just because I was too lazy to buy the thing elsewhere.

We kind of do, which is why millenials are, for the most part, a pack of morons. But that's another discussion for another day.

I decided today to hook my Wii back up. It's been a while since I'd last played it.

Is the e-shop shut down? I can't seem to access it to redownload some of my games.

The Wii's wi-fi has always been crazy finnicky for me. But on the flip-side, that also makes it really satisfying when you actually manage to buy and download a game successfully. It feels like you've gotten away with murder, kinda... except you get Castlevania Rebirth.

How can you not notice, especially if you've played modern 60hz games. I mean I knew it back playing Mario Kart 64 and later being pissed that it was impossible for Europeans to get as fast times and Japan and USA because our copies were clocked slower.

This isn't 60fpsvs30fps, the game is literally running slower than it should be. The extra hours added to the Final Fantasys is mindblowing. All that wasted time.

Heres my small but humble set of Wii games.

Had to part ways with my Wii U recently, just didn't play it enough to justify keeping it and I really just have too large of a backlog to really get around to playing it. I did however win a cheap Wii on ebay today for $40, original one with GC compatability so I am probably gonna start hitting up the local gamestops as well as the local game store to try and get a few more of the hidden gems for this console.

Don't be an elitist. Nobody is speedrunning Little King's Story.

The 50Hz thing is really only an issue if you have played (or seen) both versions of a game. If you grew up with 50Hz consoles and are used to the slower pace of the game and the slower music, you will still have enjoyed all those games. There's no kid in the world that thinks "Why is this going so slow?" whilst playing the 50Hz version without any foreknowledge, then goes "Told ya" when playing the 60Hz one. It's not "wasted time" if you enjoyed your time with those Final Fantasys or any other 50Hz games.

Like Benzychenz said, ignorance is bliss in that case.

Obviously, the difference is noticeable, and it's probably hard to get back to 50Hz once you've played the 60Hz version of a game. To me personally mainly the pace of the music makes a big difference. But I also found some games I used to play on 50Hz to be easier on 60Hz, after an initial period of getting used to the different speed. So it does impact the gameplay in some occasions.

So sure, it probably wasn't a good idea of those publishers to release 50Hz versions still of their games in the Wii era when every European has a 60Hz compatible TV.

But with the Wii not being region free, the 50Hz thing is not a good enough reason to push people on here into either importing a foreign console, or modding theirs. Those games are still perfectly playable, they are not broken at 50Hz and you will not notice the difference if you are unaware of it.

There aren't really many more Wii games I intend to pick up. Maybe Punch Out or Kirby Return to Dreamland if I can find them fairly cheap (yeah right, especially Kirby).

If all you have is a Wii and you're European, the DKC trilogy is coming back to original Wii VC this week! (And this week also marks the release of DKC3 on Wii U VC, 60Hz US version, btw [after DKC1 being 60Hz US too and DKC2 randomly being 50Hz PAL last week])

Two great collections for the Wii:

Metal Slug Anthology - Metal Slug 1-6 and Metal Slug X all arcade emulated in a nice package. No GameCube controller support though.

King of Fighters Orochi Collection - KOF 94, 95, 96, 97 and 98 all arcade emulated. With GameCube controller support and added practice modes for the earlier games.

I would buy both of those sooner rather than later.

Kirby isn't worth the $60+ it goes for to me. It wasn't worth the $50 it released at. If I never get a chance to buy it, oh well.

Same-ish for Punch Out. I'm more interested in it but not enough to put much effort into actually seeking out a deal. I waffled on a $15 new copy and it was gone before I made a decision.

Are either of these 240p like the Neo Geo originals? I heard the SamSho Anthology is, which is encouraging.

*Looks at title*
But...I liked the Wiimotes motion controls.
I hope the big N is smart enough to bring that control scheme back to the forefront next gen.

Anyways, I had a lot of fun with the Wii. It was a great little console and I don't have many bad memories of it. I also loved the marketing/branding/design philosophies behind it, and I really enjoyed it's software ecosystem (I know I'm an outlier when it comes to most games enthusiast/young men, but I really enjoy quality family/kid/casual-aimed software more than I like the Uncharteds/Last of Us's of the industry.); it was such a breath of fresh air.
Tbqh, I'd say the Wii was my favorite Nintendo system. IMHO, it was certainly better than the NGC era. Nintendo's 6th gen was basically like Disney Animation Studio's 70s and early-mid 80s; it was kind of a mess barring a few gems here and there.

Isn't Punch Out a Nintendo Selects title? It should be reasonably affordable...
I'm still salty that Wario Ware Smooth moves wasn't re-released in North America.

Edit: Geez, I just checked Amazon and used copies are going for around $20 + shipping while new copies are hanging around the $40 mark.

SNK Arcade Classics Vol 1 is another compilation I recommend. It does include Metal Slug 1 but unlike the Metal Slug Anthology it has the flashes when you hit an enemy, so I'd say it's the best way to play the original Metal Slug for relatively cheap.

Punch Out is the best game on the system IMO (with maybe one exception.) Easily worth $40+, I seriously cannot recommend the game enough.

Cool OP. As someone who has started on the NES and has owned every Nintendo console/handheld, the Wii will always go down as my absolute favorite piece of gaming hardware of all time. When people say this is where Nintendo "lost them", that's when they "lose me".

This is the console that reaffirmed everything I love about games and reinvigorated my passion for our hobby when it was at it's weakest. The focus was on fun and not on graphics technology. Everything from the simple/fun tasks of designing Mii's with friends to the awe/spectacle of playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time was a pure delight on this system.

Nintendo got more in touch with their own philosophies than ever before and their humor/charm really came through with everything about the system.

Not sure about the native resolution, but I'd stay away from Metal Slug Anthology on Wii. There are no hitflashes on the bosses which basically ruins the games (imo).

There is splash damage when throwing grenades in Metal Slug and without the hitflashes it's impossible to know if you're damaging the bosses when throwing grenades/shooting cannons close to them or beneath them.

It makes the anthology pretty much unplayable in my opinion.

EDIT: Sixteen-Bit, FYI, I just tested Metal Slug Anthology on PS2 with RGB cables on my new CRT... it's 480i :-(

Apparently, Neo Geo games are 240p on the Wii VC but not in the SNK compilation packages like Metal Slug Anthology. Unfortunately, Metal Slug games also lack the hitflashes on the Wii VC versions (which prompted me to get the PS2 Anthology in the first place).

So there really are no ideal console ports of these games if you want 240p plus proper boss fights outside of real Neo Geo hardware. Just a heads up.

Excuse me while I contemplate getting a consolized MVS:

Hit up the local game store and left with some goodies. Spent more then I wanted to but figured now's the time to pick-up some of these on the cheap.

This is true, now does seem to be the time. My EB's seem to have moved their Wii games to an area that they normally put games they'll be clearing out. Hoping for some good deals this boxing day like buy 2 get 1 free.

In the last week I've picked up:

- Excite Truck
- NBA Jam
- Spectrobes Origins
- Tenchu Shadow Assassins

That's rough. Thanks for sharing. I wonder if you can force 240p with homebrew. I used Swiss on Gamecube to get my Game Boy Player to output 240p.

Can you help me to get my PAL Wii region-free?

I installed the Homebrew channel a long time ago, I unlocked the things that could be unlocked at the time, but I always had a problem with American games: my TV would only display the red channel when using Scart RGB, only when using Composite could I get all colours. But composite is shit. Also I can't start it from the main menu, I need to use Gecko for some reason.

How can I play No more heroes in proper RGB goodness?

I feel the same way. I was actually losing interest in games until SMG which reminded me why I loved video games in the first place. Easily my favorite selection of 1st party titles from Nintendo.

Buy a component cable.

Why would you want RGB Scart for Wii games when 480p component is going to be better in almost every way except 240p games where the difference will likely be negligible anyway.

Because I don't have a component TV?

[edit] Component CRT were aimed at the American market, to correct the trash that was Composite. Because Europe already had Scart, and because Component was introduced shortly before LCD and Plasma flat-screens, almost no Component CRT or HD CRT were sold in Europe.

My recent pick ups arrived :D

Is it normal for UK games to have that purple triangle on the spine? It has ugly multi language blurbs on the back which I don't like, but if it's the only PAL version of the game printed then I don't really care.

The triangles indicate which market that SKU is sold in. All European releases have them (probably AU, too but I rarely see pics of those so I don't recall).

Damn, can't say I ever noticed 50Hz with my PAL copy of Mad World. I wish Amazon would bring back free shipping to NZ for orders over $125. But then again if it's marketplace only that wouldn't matter.

Picked up several Wii games yesterday though, damn this thread already lol.

PAL
Cooking Mama World Babysitting Mama (it was $10 and came with a doll, lol!)
Ju-On: The Grudge (this is crazy rare or something, looked interesting anyway)
Minon Everyday Hero (saw it recommended in this thread)

NTSC
Dewy's Adventure
Bust-A-Move Bash
Dragon Quest Swords The Masked Queen and the Tower of Mirrors

Don't care about regions really, I just go for what's cheapest. Got my eye on the RE shooter games next.

Is it? I bought a copy for five bucks once a) for some C-tier horror game entertainment with some friends, only to b) harvest a clean Wii case afterwards to use for some other game.

..I threw away Ju-On, lol. Atrocious game.

Ju-On is pretty much the worst Wii game I've ever played. And I've reviewed a few of the shovelware games out there. Absolutely horrible piece of trash.

I remember they artificially made the game last longer by slowing down the walk speed to atrocious levels.

Yeah I know, I just mean how one is purple and the rest are green when they were all bought from the same UK based website. I don't know if some games would get a more limited print where they are all the same SKU (like how here in Aus some games are just UK copies with an AU rating sticker).

Just me being fussy about the collection being tidy and being AU/UK only :)

And yeah Australia has them too, we get a brown triangle. Though it's on the back of the box because we have a rating logo at the bottom of the spine.

Like I said, it indicates the markets it's sold it. They're not strictly "country" codes. Just look at this:

http://www.nanaky.eu/NintendoTriangles.html
http://segaretro.org/Nintendo_of_Europe_Colored_Triangles
http://www.ebay.com/gds/Nintendo-The-Coloured-Triangles-on-Game-Boxes-/10000000004579616/g.html

Ah I getcha. It just means it's multi language, so an English only copy with a green triangle probably doesn't exist. Thanks.

Also, has anyone played the Another Code games? I sort of want to add the Wii one to my collection but feel like I should play the DS one first.

Yeah, it's hot garbage. Couldn't let it taint my collection.

You should. I really have a soft spot for that game.
