Maybe they don't think that it is wise to push it too hard before a more solid library of games?
Now that would be a smart move.

PS3 and 360 are Wii U's biggest problem at the moment, not the PS4 or Microsoft's new system.
More expensive than the other current gen consoles without to offer a real technical leap or an unique software lineup.
So I fired up my Wii U again yesterday (after a while) to get F-Zero and the Monster Hunter 3 demo. And in the light of recent announcements of the PS4 the Wii U just looks and feels one huge step behind.
Of course the Wii U hasn't become any worse since it's launch but when you see the PS4 and its advanced technology and the new concepts Sony is planning it really made my head ache yesterday about some of the decisions made for the WiiU OS, especially regarding User Experience (I could start an entire thread about this). Of course I haven't seen much, not to say didn't touch anything PS4 yet, but the sluggish Wii U OS seems sooo far behind now.
This is not supposed to be a Wii U bash or anything. Just my personal astonishment about why Nintendo put the Wii U together so carelessly, partially ignoring technological advancements completely.

And the sluggish Wii U OS doesn't bother me at all. The long load times aren't preferable, but once you get into the apps, they are fast and responsive, which is more important to me. One of my biggest problems with the Wii/PS3/360 were that once you'd get into an app, they'd be some of the most unresponsive shit ever. Especially the goddamn shit stores.
Yup and I think 360 / ps3 will be ps4 / xb3's biggest problems too.
It's not only that it takes long to load, but the whole way the User Experience is designed.
One example:
I think Miiverse is a great addition. But the way you for example you have to administer your friend list is a pain for nowaday standards. There are things like that you have to confirm your profile first to accept or even receive friend requests, while you have no problems posting in the miiverse. Why is this not part of the setup process?
Messages and posts are not updated in real time because the Miiverse basically works on request just like a web page.
Then you have this 100 characters limitation. I mean 100 is just as arbitray as 140 but even on Twitter you can post longer messages.
If you want to see if a friend is online you have to open the HOME menu, where it displays how many friends are online without telling you the names before entering the Friend list. But the friend list is entirely different application so you are basically Miiverse because when you leave the friend list you are in the Wii U menu again and have to reenter Miiverse. But nowhere in Miiverse you can see information about your friends or who is online. Even though the profiles are tied to Miiverse and not to the friend list. And every time you change between friend list, Miiverse and Wii U menu you have those small loading times which are just becoming painful after a while.
Another example:
Downloads can also only be accessed via HOME menu. And you don't get much information if downloads are finished apart from the light around the HOME button menu blinking subtly. And you have to enter the download menu to install the software because it does not turn up in the Wii U menu as one of those nice gift packages you are used to from the 3DS. And that is even more puzzling.
Download times have always been a pain with Nintendo but I am just astonished that they cannot put up better server or better downloads or AT THE LEAST add a more charming download screen like the ones from the 3DS.
And I could name more stuff that should be self understanding nowadays but Nintendo simply ignores.
Check E3 2011 and the months afterwards
Nintendo will be fine. Among the 3 console competitors, they have the strongest IPs by far.
On the PS3, you press the PS button, scroll to the right and see all your friends in less then 5 seconds. No need to open up another app like on the Wii U. Same for downloads. On the 360 and PS3 you have to go to other parts in their Home Menus to check Friends online (starting with a number til you open the Friends tab) and check downloads. Why is it an issue when Nintendo does it
my main concern is that we pretty much know what their big games are. Nothing out of the ordinary will be announced. They might be awesome games but nothing truly shocking. They need new ips.
Remember the first time Wii U revealed...and people were confused if its a Wii add on or not. That didn't happen with the PS4, and will not happen with the Nextbox.
You'd think Wii U was Nintendo's first product, so many missteps.
The slow OS, slightly more powerful than 7 year old consoles, lazy launch games...you can draw blocks on the screen in the same/new Mario game, very exciting. I can't help imagine in an alternate universe if NSMBU was on a Sony or MS console...they at least would've added coop online play.
The whole Wii U project seems like Nintendo has no interest in it.

People say the Wii U's OS is slow. I timed it and the 360 takes longer to boot up and even longer to get to your actual games. Surprising but true
The download speeds have to be fixed. Its criminal how long it takes to download a demo/game!!
Not surprising to me. Whenever I boot up my 360 it sits on an empty spinning icon screen for at least 30 seconds. It's infuriating actually. If I am using bandwidth for something else it takes even longer.
I downloaded the MonHun demo in like 6 minutes. Maybe you have a bad wireless connection?

Though not as technically advanced, Wonderful 101 is arguably visually more appealing than Knack. Same with Zelda Wind Waker, it will likely be one of the top 3 looking games this year, no matter how technically inferior it will be to PS4 productions.
Wii U demo kiosks will turn heads in H2 this year. So price will be the major factor. Just like Sony will lose big money on each PS4 sold, Nintendo must sacrifice profits and slash Wii U's price to gain market shares. And offer an ambassador program![]()
Nintendo makes hardware for themselves. They haven't actually cared about third parties for a long, long time. If they did, they wouldn't have targeted the TDP that they have.
See, that's the thing. I don't give two shits about technological advancements. As long as the system can look nice on current gen TVs, then I am happy.
Wii U games look nice, and Nintendo knows what they are doing.
You know that these two IPs are more popular than any Sony game?
I agree with Wonderful 101. But then, I find Knack very unappealing. Wind Waker depends on what they do with the style. I wasn't impressed with what they showed in the Nintendo Direct, but if they get close enough to the original style it'll be among the most beautiful games ever made.

Exactly.
Nintendo knows this.
I'd be surprised if they aren't doing it for a reason.
It's not like they don't have the cash for a massive advertisement campaign.
The only reason why I think Nintendo is in a better position than they were before is because of E3. Originally I thought Nintendo was going to be a complete non factor at this year's E3, being completely forgotten thanks to the announcement of 2 new consoles. However now that the PS4 was announced, everyone can now more or less expect what to see from Microsoft and Nintendo's E3 presence is now relevant again. They need to take full advantage and just go nuts with game announcements. Like Wii U direct times 10.
Such faith! Where does it come from? I'm willing to watch as this next-generation unfolds, but mistakes will be made. Nintendo does indeed know what they want for themselves, it's a shame third parties don't feel the same way.

Co-op online play isn't really feasible with Mario. If the characters couldn't interact with eachother, then absolutely. However, that's not Nintendo's intent. As such, there would be horrible latency issues just due to the speed of light, let alone any connection ping.

The (supposedly) snappy OS and the sleep function of the PS4 are really appealing to me. If it is as quick as they tout then I know which system I'll be picking for multiplat, regardless of graphics.
Also I'm curious to see how all this social stuff will be integrated into PS4. Cross-game chat, spectating my friend's games, and easily saving videos of my great feats are all far more appealing to me than anything miiverse has shown.
I do like my Wii U, but since I very rarely have friends over to my house to play games, most of my gaming with friends is online. It looks like the PS4 will be a lot more enjoyable in that social aspect.
Personally as long as the games load fine I couldnt care less about the OS. It would be cool if the OS is better but its really not a deal breaker. All of the extra online/OS Sony talked about sounded awesome, but most of the games they showed looked like the same boring games we are getting now so I'm not sold yet.Are you all listening to what your saying though?
WiiU is supposed to be a NEXT GEN console. Yet here they are struggling to put together an operating system that in places can't even match the speed, ease of use and functionality of systems that are 7 years old. From a prior generation.
The fact that there is even a comparison is troubling. Especially when in 12 months
wiiU will be competing with systems that will presumably have near instant access to games and blazing fast OS's. sure they might boot slightly faster then a 7 YEAR OLD system, but isn't that kind of pathetic? They should be running circles around them, not going tit for tat.
WiiU is setting themselves up to look like 56k
versus high speed in the OS department if they don't get their act together. That's what should be really troubling you about this topic.
Blame the hackers. Nintendo is obviously reinitializing much of the OS each time you switch an app as to prevent hackers access to the root of the machine. Are you all listening to what your saying though?

Yeah that is why I don't get why Sony wanted to reveal the PS4 now instead of wait. All E3 will be now is showing how the console looks, maybe a surprise game or two and hands on time. Meanwhile the Nextbox is going to be riding a much fresher hype train.
Console launches are never marked by droughts and uncompelling software.Well, it will help that the most games for PS4 and Microsoft's new console will not run on the current gen consoles.
My Windows 8 machine on an SSD boots from cold in under 7 seconds. WiiU takes about 30 seconds to do anything, let alone launch a game.
... because there is nothing before holiday's that could bring hype for the WiiU? (E3?)The wii u will be in trouble come holiday time I believe . There is just zero hype for it.
