The Witcher 3 | Review Thread

Without commenting on the quality of the post, I don't think I'm going out on a limb to state that Leb's post is clearly a joke post. Come on, just look at the last line:

I haven't had a chance to see how the actual numerical scores are shaping up, but assuming that these excerpts accurately represent the prevailing sentiment, well...

Do you all think he is reading the text and compiling quotes all while being oblivious to the scores?

You have to be confident to wear a tunic like that.

There is a bit of gap between the scores and the text for some of the reviews. Especially when it comes about reviewing a RPG. You would think that the quality of the quests would matter more in the final score, but in the end, it's the reviewer's privilege to decide.

All in all sounds like a great game, too bad there are no PC reviews/impressions yet.

Seems like the chose visuals over performance. Hopefully they iron out some of the issues in patches. Otherwise, I am very pleased they are pushing the visuals.

To assist those individuals trying to make the most informed purchasing decision possible, I've helpfully compiled what I feel to be a fair and representative collection of excerpts from the higher profile reviews.

You put a lot of time into that little joke post didnt you...

It's a joke post. He's been making funny and absurd faux-negative posts for a couple of days now. The way he's edited it is so completely horrible; it's kind of a reverse on what DVD cases do when cherrypicking favorable quotes.

Ah, sorry about that. Good to know.

too hard to tell these days, heh

Reviews are looking good, consider me stoked.

I will pick this one up as soon as I clear a bit of my backlog. I still have to beat Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Well if CDP or anyone for that matter cannot deliver smooth performance in 1080p then please add an option to drop the res to 900p. That way everyone is happy. Now if the framedrops are CPU bound then ok.

In a NeoGAF review thread anything is possible. :)

This game is a victory for the traditional games industry. At a time where publishers are hesitant to invest, The Witcher 3 shows that creating the biggest, most ambitious and graphically impressive game possible can still reap massive critical and financial success. Hats off to CDPR, thank you for creating this game, believing in console and PC gamers, and showing the industry that traditional games are still the pinnacle of the hobby.

Gamespot: "[the game] is prone to... bugs and visual glitches... perpetual loading screens... jarring... pop in."

Game Informer: "... long load times. Breakable weapons interrupt the adventure. [Ciri sequences] far from exciting... locations difficult to access, lacking good fast-travel locations. Witcher sense... overused... [ending] rubbed me the wrong way, disappointment lingered long after the credits rolled."

IGN: "main quest... mundane, even perfunctory... technical [caveats], 30fps... too much to ask, transitions between maps... too long... glitches... pop up. ...too much padding in the form of meaningless fetch quests and collectathons."

Kotaku:"...shortcomings in the enemies' artificial intelligence... the developer's technological ambitions... overwhelm the PS4's capabilities and the frame-rate and responsiveness become a real problem... inventory management... a real mess."

PCGames.de: "Spreche Meinen besten Dank aus... Chr. Rex"

Well thank god I didn't have this preordered! Dodged a bullet there!

The IGN review feels slightly contradictory:

And then go on to say this:

So which is it?

if i were to guess, there are quests which have you looking for items, but in doing so would actually give you more perspective of the world instead of it being "another fetch quest", because 1) it extrapolates on the world, surrounds, political climate and 2) tells a personal story of the npc relative to what's happening with the world.

in essence, you "collect" something but the big difference being you don't just go from here to there to do something. you do it because it opens up a viewpoint, a side story, or something that is actually of value story-wise and immersion-wise.

so i don't view it as fetch quests, really. there's only so much you can do with video games, sadly. you either go to a place to kill something or collect something. sadly, those are the interactions prevalent in games.

These scores are not in any way surprising for CD Projekt Red fans or Witcher series vets. I doubt all these great reviews are "paid" for

CD Projekt Red are one of the top developer's in the world IMO

I agree, and that doesn't change a single thing that I said.

The reviews (including a Polish one that wasn't posted here) are EXTREMELY polarising.

http://www.cdaction.pl/artykul-41457/wiedzmin-3-dziki-gon--recenzja-cdactionpl.html

If the argument for that is that different people have different opinions, then you could add up all the variables that could influence their scores (tastes, experience, expectations, deadlines etc) and the review process as a whole would look rather pointless. Yet that still wouldn't stop people gaping at all the big 9's and 10's, blindly praising something they haven't even played yet.

Try being negative to something you equally haven't experience and watch the pitch forks come out.

This is all so ridiculous. Every time.

?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with Ram.

Assassin's Creed, The Elder Scrolls, GTA, etc run just fine on a lot smaller Ram last gen.

The Witcher 3's world is supposedly 2.5 times larger then Skyrim's world.

We are talking about 14 square miles (Skyrim) with 52 square miles (Witcher 3)

I love Skyrim so this is no knock against that game. I just think more memory would allow for the freedoms of having larger scope overall.

the guy mention that there is frame drops like 100% of the games in the world. now i could be a hyperbole or not. and from the videos i have seen it runs better than dark souls (ps3) so im good with.
anyway there is always DF
He specifically says something about wishing that some moments could hold 30 I have to watch it again... Better wait girl DF like you said

Polygon review will also be interesting since recently 'they' said that they want (nintendo) to kill the consoles.
Most gamers are getting PC version including me so I would like to see some PC (with some I mean 4-5 ) reviews but still playstation 4 review makes sense since it is universal device.

You look very sensitive about what was talked about. I'm just giving you tips on how to care less about what other people might think, you might just be a bit more likeable this way and have more fun also. Its a win win situation for everyone.

Give me tips via PMs if you think I need coaching advice for posting on forums.

With review copies out, it shouldn't be too long before DF publish their faceoff, right?

Interesting to see how the 750 ti compares on this one, has been somewhat of a multiplatform king over the past year.

Sounds like Xbox One and PC review copies were not sent out.

What is the highest score that Gametrailers gave to the game? 9.8?

edit - yeah, they never went above 9.8 They gave that score to GTA4, GTA5, Galaxy1, Halo3, A Link Between Worlds, Bayo 2, TLOU and now W3.

I doubt that. Would still be nice to have impressions from all versions.

Why did everyone get PS4 copies to review? seems weird. I mean I will be playing there but I thought Xbox had a marketing deal. Wouldn't they want people to review that copy?

Sounds like he's a realist rather than apart of the rabble that seem to get overly excited over scores rather than the reviews themselves.

The whole thread is full of people repeating the same 9/10 and 10/10 scores while quoting the same excerpts from these reviews. Yet this hype, generated by sites who have it in their best interest to rate it highly (some of which were given paid trips, early builds etc), is what will drive sales. It's pathetic.
I'm not even on board the hype train, I'm highly sceptical of any open world RPG after DA:I, but if positive feedback makes you less interested in a game, then you must be there for a controversy or something, that's what I meant.

To the bolded part:
Gamespot did not get a paid trip, I wish people would stop saying that. It's a serious accusation and a plain lie. I also don't understand how gaming sites have an interest in a game selling well.
