The Wonderful 101 |OT| Diplomacy has failed

This game is so good! Just beat the first operation. The ending boss sequence was awesome, but the Unite Build wasn't working correctly for some reason...

Always use the right stick for the Unite Build. Push it at the direction and keep pushing until all your team members are in place. Sometimes one or two might get left out, just push the right stick again at the same direction WITHOUT cancelling the Unite Build with Y.

The Wonderful 101 is a delightful game, a high-octane romp through volcanos and stomachs that redefines “over the top” with its increasingly-majestic array of setpieces.

The controls make no sense—until you start finding a rhythm. The action is disorienting—until you realize who’s doing what. The camera is a mess—until… well, okay, the camera is always a mess.
Still, once you get the hang of The Wonderful 101’s bizarre rules and choices—like, your controller vibrating when you’re on the receiving end of a big hit instead of when you make one—the game is rewarding, satisfying, and ridiculous. It’s a tough game, and you’ll have to spend a lot of time working on muscle memory if you want to master its mechanics, even at the easiest difficulty levels. It takes commitment.

But if you do pick up The Wonderful 101, and if you do put in the time and energy, you'll be rewarded with an insane adventure that, in many ways, is like nothing I've ever played before.

I can't *believe* these lazy developers keep making file sizes so damn large. Btw, how does technology work?
Just coming in to tell everyone I'm fully supporting niche releases, the WiiU, and new IPs... I'm just waiting until Target's B2G1 next week to do it ;p

I read Kotaku's review of 101. Is the camera as big of an issue as he's made it out to be ? I've read a few other reviews that mention how it can be unreliable due to zooming out too far or zooming in doesn't not always giving you the best view possible. Also, the camera apparently gets blocked by the larger buildings in the environments because they don't turn transparent when your characters are on the opposite side of them. Kotaku seems to understand the game about as well as other reviews did such has Destructoid, but Destructoid didn't really mention the camera issues from what I can remember. Anyway, I was just curious about it.

I loved the
fight between Red and Blue even if we saw it coming.

I just need to figure out how use the Unite gun into the fight as I barely use it, along with the unite attack haven't used it since I got unite tombstone.

Search for a red edge nearby (instead of a green one). Pretty much straight forward from there. you'll be able to figure it out by yourself.

Thanks, it was driving me mad as I could see them but not find a way in.

Camera can be frustrating a few times, but it is nothing that will prevent you from enjoying the game unless you are really really picky. You can press L or R to adjust the zoom. It helps a bit. I can only remember one time where the building didn't go transparent and it was on a corridor and you fight no enemy in there, so not a problem.

Camera could be better, yes. But it works fine most of the time.

I had the same issue at the same part. I wonder if I wasn't pushing my MC into it as well? Is that it?

There are two workarounds to fix camera issues: keep ZL pressed during interior building sequences, and zoom in or out depending on the situation. The default camera is not always ideal and it has to be mentioned, but it's a minor flaw considering... THIS GAME.

Unite Gun is AWESOME to skyrocket your combo multiplier. The Unite Stinger <--- ---> + A will do wonders to your combo score, and it can be used to stun enemies as well, as your team members will automatically start a Climb Attack after you shoot them.

Playing in hard, I don't really have problems with the camera, so it's probably the fact that during the first overwhelming playthrough, it get criticism not really related to it.
And then there's things like the mega tank that drop little flying saucers and I've never seen the camera go that far, really bad. I advise to drop a bomb on them to kill them fast.

The Wonderful 101 brings back discovery of the NES era

Forbes review: 8.5

Platinum Games have put together an action superhero title that is truly unlike any other game I’ve ever played, that feels right at home in Nintendo‘s lineup of exclusives but is similar to none of them.
Here we have a game that takes full advantage of Nintendo’s Wii U console, and feels next-gen beyond its bright, bold graphics.
In this day and age, so many ideas feel regurgitated, so many games ride on the backs of giants and manage only to be dwarfed by comparison, or imitate greatness and achieve only mediocrity.
The Wonderful 101 doesn’t bother to imitate or stand in the shadows. It’s a bright gem, a raucous, unapologetic romp that doesn’t worry about risk-taking. And for that, it’s almost certainly a love-it or hate-it proposition. It’s not a perfect game, but its rough edges are almost always forgivable, thanks largely to the creativity and fun that bubbles up throughout.

The framerate is pathetic in these Vorkken fights

This is for the eyeball part of the first boss fight. Figured you'd just draw a straight line into it but apparently not.

No, it's right. I guess it can be a little bitchy at that part. Try letting go of the right stick for a second and then push forward again in case a couple of heroes are stuck.

Push the right stick on the direction of the missing eye ball and keep pushing it until all of your members are inside. If one or two members are left behind it won't work, so just re-center the right stick and push it to the same direction again.

is my impression correct that the later reviews tend to be much better for this game after the 6s and 7s from the initial batches of reviews?

Oh yeah Reviews in General have been far more positive after that initial batch of zomg the controls reviews. Its ending up around a solid 80% game all said and done which considering the nature of the game and its appeal or lack of appeal that's pretty good.

Failure? I'm enjoying making games, getting cute babes, what more? RT @Wutmang Wonderful 101 is a goddamn failure. How do you feel?

Everybody play on Normal.

Prove yourselves.

I play everything on the hardest setting even on my first play through. Games today are way too easy.

Anyone playing games on easy today are just cheating themselves. I wish I wasnt working today, I would of picked it up today. Its cool though, tomorrow Ill get it. I pre-ordered it.

I don't know where "gamers" get off pointing out that this game is going to flop, or that it's a failure, sold poorly in japan, etc.

it's this mentality that leaves us with nothing but COD and BF rehashes every year- people hate anything unusual.

It really is disgusting and if it weren't for places like GAF, I would be pretty ashamed to call myself a "gamer".

Thank god there are folks out there who appreciate different types of gaming experiences.

It's even worse when people are "glad" that it doesn't sell well to prove their point that all good games should come to all platforms other than Nintendo's for some reason.

Heh, I don't think that's a fair assumption. Aside from the generalization, it is obvious that this game, despite how good it is, has a steep learning curve, some people might be put off by that.

A unique game doesn't necessarily mean it should automatically appeal to everybody.

I think the english description helped me understand the 10 morph combo.
It says "Land 10 different morphs" I think, so it wouldn't be juggling an enemy in the air but dropping on him 10 unique morphs so only possible near the end of the game when you get additionnal morphs.

Sega-addicts Review: A

you will be lost in the first 30 minutes, but once you learn how everything works, it becomes one of the most fun, creative and elegant battle systems out there.
The Wonderful 101 reminded me of the happier days when I was a kid. When imagination reigned supreme. It also reminded me why I love video games. Platinum Games’ latest title is simply one of the most unique, imaginative and insanely fun games on the market, even with its occasional control issues. If you were waiting for a game that will sell you a Wii U, this might be it. Because nobody in their right mind should miss this wonderful gem.

Sales-age.

Good games that don't sell enough copies are ridiculed. It's how things are done in these parts.

Yep, just kinda fiddly in that part, gotta slow down a bit to get it to build.

For things like that, I find it easier to just press in on the touchscreen and hold that point, since minute variances in the analog stick can get someone stuck.

I've beaten the game several times now and I've gotten hit by an obscured enemy I couldn't see or account for maybe like 3 or 4 times, and they were all the tiny little guys.

Almost all foreground objects become transparent if the action is taking place behind them. You can control the level of zoom at almost any playable point in the game.

The camera really is not an issue at all. if you get hit, it's because you haven't read an enemy's attack telegraph or were looking at the wrong part of the screen.

Just came home from Nintendo World from the W101 event. I was 20th or so in line with a friend. Waited 3 hours and they handed fliers to everyone in line and it was pretty long. If the flier had a Nintendo stamp in it, you get a signed copy by Kamiya. There were only 20 autographed copies so 20 stamps. I was the first one to get the stamp. I was like HOLY SHIT! They took my picture and all that. Pretty lucky/crazy. Anyway here is my copy.

Nice to see I wasn't the only one here that got the stamp

Finished the first Operation, but now I need a nap. Hype kept me up last night or something.

I noticed that while I could get a pure platinum run through of the demo, the actual game feels less forgiving. Or maybe it's the fact that I didn't touch the demo in the week running up to today.

Also, I know it's impossible to find a lot of things without a guide, but I did find all five platinum coins my first play of Operation 1-B. so I'm going to scrounge through every level for now.

Most annoying thing: I was on my way to a no damage run through of the 1-C fight, but then when I went to block a stomp I took damage anyway because I had under 50 members. Pure Platinum playthrough after I finish Normal confirmed.

Always use the right stick for the Unite Build. Push it at the direction and keep pushing until all your team members are in place. Sometimes one or two might get left out, just push the right stick again at the same direction WITHOUT cancelling the Unite Build with Y.
So many times this. If someone gets stuck while you're doing a build, just let go of the right stick and push again.

I thought it was the norm for the controller to rumble when you took damage, not the other way around. When did this change?

For things like that, I find it easier to just press in on the touchscreen and hold that point, since minute variances in the analog stick can get someone stuck.
This is so true. Sometimes I'm going to for a Sword, but I don't let go of the stick properly and end up with a twist at the end, which means I get nothing. So frustrating.

Just picked up a copy of the game. My local gamestop only had 2 copies of the game shipped to them and both were pre-ordered. Luckily the associate at the store felt bad that everytime i go there they never have what i'm looking to buy, so she gave me someone's preordered copy.

Sounds like you should start pre-ordering; someone's day just got a lot less wonderful, and they'll blame it on Gamestop.
