Like the biathlon the 50km was a duel for the medal count win Russia vs Norway and Russia swept to take a comfortable overall win

Russia have clinched first place in the medal table, ranked by either golds or total medals.

And it's crazy, because they really haven't even restored their national programs like they did during the Soviet days, or what China currently has. Guys like the Russian 2 man bobsled winner were even fed up with the way the sports authorities were developing their programs, and CBC just said the guys who won the Sprint aren't really liked by the Russian committees because they don't really take part with them.

Going to be interesting seeing how 2018 shapes up. Russia has also already started to regain a lot of its dominance in the Summer games as well.

I'm not holding my breath for that...
At least our football team is in good hands

The way for improvement in the summer Olympics is crystal clear. So many medals available in swimming and Russia is mediocre at best at it.

Can't help but feel happy for the Russians about this final sweep after their overall disappointing cross-country ski performances at their home Olympics.

I notice that Petter Northug leaves Sochi without a single medal, despite the rest of the Norwegian team doing better and better as time went on. Will this lead to him spending less time talking about Sweden and more on improving his own performance?
Almost certainly not, but it's nice to dream.

Bobsled is the most overrated and worst Olympic sport there is. It's so predictable after the first run it's worthless to even continue afterwards.

Only Austrian ski team is happy with yesterday's second slalom course (that really made selection between the best), other teams are fuming - Sweden skier Myhrer said that A.Kostelić is "fuc**ng idiot and it is time to go out of the ski caravan", French team leader said that course setter is "old, senile, incompetent person"

Ivica Kostelič said that first slalom run should be placed in junior categories and that slalom is technical discipline and course should be tough in the Olympic

In the end we should be happy even though 2 out of 4 racers from Austria disqualified. I don't think the course did any more harm than the snow quality. If I remember correctly a olympic course should be demanding and difficult compared to standard world cup races.

Russia absolutely crushed these last few days. Big finish.

Don't underestimate the power of hosting. There's an extra passion to fund, train, and perform to have a good showing on home turf.

I'm not a huge fan of Russia, but I like it when the host does well. Hosting isn't cheap, so to put on a good show for their fans and their country is the reward they deserve. Good on Russia.

There have been a lot of sweeps this olympics. This must be some sort of record. I don't recall another olympics where so many events had all 3 medals go to one country.

Same ol' shit. Bobsledding sucks.

Not really. They've only done the 4 run system to promote fairness, set up seeds/runs and to also give teams a chance to perhaps make up for a slightly off previous run. This is another sport that is won in the hundredths of seconds at times.

Yeah Team GB had a terrible first run but made it up to 5th place on the 4th run which was a fantastic achievement.

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. From what I can remember, Netherlands had four sweeps in speed skating, the USA had one in ski slopestyle, France had one in ski cross, and Russia had one just now in cross-country. I might be missing another one or two, someone help me out here.

The final competitive event of the 2014 olympic games is finished. Closing ceremony to come.

Final medal count in a few.

Canada was close to Vancouver 2010 and it doesn't even matter because of the fact we got both Hockey gold and won the curling gold medals as well. Was a great Olympics. Can't believe that Russian surge though. Reminds me of Soviet times. Can't wait for 2018 though. Will also be interesting to see if Russia takes this Olympics rejuvenation into the Summer Olympics as well. Table is pretty much what I thought it would be, save for Germany which is slightly lower than I thought and the fact I didn't predict Netherlands to dominate almost all of speed skating.

In thinking back about the Sochi games, it happened on Day 1, but this is still the defining moment of these games for me as a Canadian:

Definitely. Best celebration, best flower ceremony moment, and best medal ceremony moment.

It's always nice to see nations rising to new olympic peaks, hopefully spurs more interest, funding and success in the future.

And if we see how many near misses our competitors had, we could go over 10 easily. But we must be happy with this, because we won't see such medal count for some time...
